Absolutely delicious food. I think the new owners have been there eight months and make a delicious pizza - plus the salads were fresh and large. Will come back, and look forward to trying their dinners as well. The set up is a little odd in that the staff seems cut off from the dining room and it can be difficult getting the staff's attention due to this, but we certainly weren't neglected. Despite this, they were pleasant and efficient in getting us our food out for a sit down dinner. First off, Danielle of Worcester, if you believe the Red Tomato is the only pizzeria along the shoreline that makes fresh tomato sauce, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you. That statement is absolutely stupid and it's like saying McDonalds is the only restaurant along the shoreline that sells hamburgers. Most pizzerias make their own sauce. It's quite easy and hardly a noteworthy accomplishment. But It's understandable how folks who can't boil water would be impressed. The rest of us naturally assume most pizza joints make their own sauce. Overall the Red T gets a thumbs down. If this place weren't competing with so many other good pizza places, it would probably get a thumbs up. But I can think of lots of other shoreline places that make a better pizza. Anthony's, Naples, Bufalina, Centro and Grand Apizza come to mind. The Red Tomato boasts its pizza as being "New Haven thin style pizza". But it's an insult to mention New Haven in the same sentence as the Red Tomato. It's beyond me why Madison people go ga-ga over it (although it's hardly surprising because this is the same town where Village Pizza has stayed in business for 16 years). The pizza reminds me more of all the mediocre pizza joints in NYC when I used to live in Manhattan. You know the pizza joints I'm talking about. The ones that say Famous Ray and serve mostly slices. I'm really having a disconnect on what I expected and what was delivered, I was imagining pillows of softness and cheese, and I have hardness and tastelessness and chewy cheese. So sad. Wanted to be happy. Also, after I ordered, and had pulled the trigger on "place order" then it showed me that there was a four dollar delivery fee. That was kind of mean. My mother got a regular mozzarella with peppers, we wanted green peppers, they didn't have green peppers, they have a mix of roasted peppers. The first time we ordered with the new owners, they got our order wrong. We ordered a large pepperoni. They gave us a medium and said it was a large in a medium box. They charged us for a large too. This makes no sense, and we went again and we heard them do the same thing to other families. The next time we went, they got it wrong. Again. We ordered again over the phone, and they picked up just saying: yeah? No red tomato pizza, how may i help you? Nothing. Just: yeah? Not even how may i help you. I ordered pizza from here because of the great reviews but I was highly disappointed. The pizza was edible but was far from gourmet or Italian style pizza. The crust was bland and tasted like bread instead of pizza dough, the garlic was not fresh but tasted like it came out of a jar. The sauce was pasty and not fresh. I'm only being detailed about these items because of the high price of the pizza. I don't mind paying a premium price for a pizza as long as it's worth it. Excellent pizza. The crust is spectacular, chewy and tasty. Crisp, not burned (I guess I haven't lived in the area long enough to appreciate burnt pizza). Toppings and overall presentation are good too, though once you get away from the crust they have competition (Nick & Tony's for instance). Nothing here but pizza, so if someone in your party isn't after that, go elsewhere. They do have salads and antipasti (for some reason the owner has a thing against blue cheese dressing, so I try to remember to bring my own). But nothing else. Which, for some, is as it should be. This is a serious pizza place, perhaps not quite the same as Pepe's, and nowhere near as funky ad Sally's (would you really take your little kids in there?) but good. Good for the Shoreline, I have only had takeout here but if you like it thin, this is the only place in the Guilford/Madison area that does thin, (that I am aware of). We generally get a plain and a large with 2 topppings, comes out to $30 or so.....I would not call it a good deal..... Other pizza restaurants are doing thin crust, but this place does get it right.. I work in Branford, so naturally I get the office scuttlebutt about Red Tomato being the place to go for pizza on the shoreline. I live in Branford by the green. For me to get all the way out to the Guilford/Madison line, I could have driven back and forth from Wooster Street in New Haven. That's my gripe with Red Tomato: for the same effort on my part, I could be eating at one of the New Haven Pizza Triumverate. The pizza is respectable. It'd be the best pizza in town in most towns. The wait is minimal. I really enjoyed their white clam. But the unfortunate truth is that when you operate a pizza place in New Haven County, you are going to be judged by your peers. an ok pie. i mean, it is not far from new haven and if i compare it to any of those pizzas, this place isnt even in the running. as a pizzeria, it is ok. i had a small cheese pie - and if you look at the pic i posted on the yelp you can see the crust was docked to hell with a meat hook or something, it was really mutilated and had no bubbles whatsoever. i hate that. the sauce was on the acidic side and i had heard a lot of people talk about the sauce at red tomato and honestly it did nothing for me, it did not elevate this pizza, it was pretty much just an ok sauce. the cheese was ok too. geez i am tired of say OK so i am done with this review. high point: they have foxon park soda and thimble island beer. read more

Living in Madison, pizza options are limited unless you want to drive all over with a carload of kids. We used to stick to places that delivered, and while the pizza was OK, once we finally tried Red Tomato, we don't order delivery. Red Tomato is the best option in town (I do really, really love Bufalina in Guilford, but it's easier to get typical types of toppings for the kids at Red Tomato). We've eaten in the dining room a couple of times and the service has always been very friendly. Ditto ordering takeout. So, if you aren't up to driving into New Haven for pizza or devoting a day to a journey to the Bronx for a slice or two, Red Tomato is perfect. Yes, the dining room is small and ultra casual. Hello Red Tomato it's good to be back. Salmon pie in Germany was interesting but I missed your white clam and bacon. That was until I saw a shrimp pie go by. So, a small half clam and bac, half shrimp and bac-big Yum! M had cheese, as always, but T got a little wild with salami, pepperoni and bacon. I said there's no way, then I took a bite. Yes grease and salt and spice and wonderful. Add some Thimble Island and a glass of Malbec and we were happy. Took a salad home next day's lunch and on our way. I used to be a regular at Slice in North Branford which sadly closed, also a regular at Marco's but the family wanted to try something new so we tried takeout at Red Tomato on a Sunday afternoon. It was probably about 5pm and our wait for 3 pies was only 25 min. Had the Pepperoni, House special and the pesto pizza. The pesto was AWESOME, the pepperoni VERY good, the house special was good but I wouldn't get it again. Very Very good crust and all 3 pies withstood a 20 minute ride home w/o getting soggy.
