Tucked into an average shopping center is a place called Porton, a Mexican restaurant that is a total gem! I honestly hate supporting door dash because I hate what it stands for, taking money from local places that already suffer from increasing prices but I did discover them originally by ordering DoorDash and I was blown away. Since then I have been a dine in or takeout customer. The owner is very friendly and they have a variety of things on their menu. I love their taco salad with the cilantro ranch, the crispy beef tacos (which they use quality beef, and you can taste the difference), street tacos, the tortilla soup, birria dilla (their take on birria tacos), flautas, the changa, etc. Honestly it's one of my favorites in town! They are always busy! They have a small dining area inside and outside and offer beer and margaritas, and they have my favorite beverage Jarritos Mandarin. My friend recommended this place so we went after church today. They had people spread out but they also accommodated larger groups if you were all together which we appreciated. Sometimes it is hard to go out even as a family if you have a lot of people. I got the pick 3 things for myself and my kids. The Chile Relleno was amazing. I got a cheese enchilada for my daughter and a taco for my other daughter and ate the Chile relleno myself. I almost wished I had gotten 3 Chile Rellenos. I had eaten queso (which was good too) and chips and salsa prior so I was okay but man, it was delicious. The servers were very nice and the food was good. Some of the best birria tacos in the area!! The meat was melt in your mouth perfect and the cheese at the bottom of the tortilla was ooey gooey! They also had some of the best Mexican corn we have had since moving from TX. Service was fast and friendly and it was priced well. This is our family's Friday night go to. The service is friendly and prompt. At this point, they know our drink orders. The food is delicious. There is birria on the menu that melts in your mouth and is well seasoned. The shrimp tacos come with a house made dressing that is very tasty (our daughter's favorite). The fajitas are plentiful. Sides: charro beans (seasoned pintos), refried beans, black beans, and Mexican street corn (on or off the cob) are excellent. The ambiance is that of a clean, nicely decorated restaurant. This was definitely a top notch experience. We were created with a smile at the door. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Our server checked on us throughout our meal. We didn't have a chance to ask for extra napkins, more chips, water or e en a to-go box. This is definitely a hidden gem. We wanted to go some where less crowded and this spot was perfect. The decor made me feel like I was in Mexico. The seats are super comfortable and the tables are covered with the same leather material. The Mexican corn was like none other. Great food! Not the usual "cover in sauce and everything tastes the same" kind of place. Good Mexican food. Complimentary chips and fresh salsa! The usual menu choices, including pick 1, 2 or 3. We enjoyed enchiladas, burrito and tamales. Up charge of .50 cents for grilled chicken breast for burrito. Well worth the $. Looks family owned and operated. You order upon entering and they deliver to your table. Quickly. Not sure how they would be if crowded, but we had excellent service. Only beer for now. They have applied for liquor license. I ordered thru door dash. I would not order the mixed vegetables again. They were way overcooked, even soggy. The flautas could have great, but the water from the vegetables soaked the flautas on the bottom. The black beans were seasoned perfectfully. The chicken tortilla soup was so fresh and had a lot of very good vegetables, the broth was excellent and so tasty , not to spicy. I will order again and get the fajitas next time. First, as often said-- I grade tough. 3 stars is supposed to be "OK"....5 stars should be "sublime." This place seems fine; I debated between 3 and 4. I went with 4 because for a lunch and ordering 'the basics,' I thought the food was well-prepared and a bit better than the standard tex-mex food available at most places. They didn't have a separate lunch menu but on their regular, smallish menu they had a "pick one, two or three" choice which worked well and was priced decently. Both the chile relleno and tamale that I got were fine; the chile relleno seemed a bit tastier than many. I also liked that you could order your choice of 2 sides; I had street corn and mixed veggies-- a very different addition compared to the usual rice and beans. The chips and salsa- I thought the salsa was watery and rather plain. Service was fine; they had bar drinks but I was there for lunch. So, summary- just fine; I'd go again if in the area but honestly wouldn't go out of my way for it. Other tex-mex places in the west Knox area are as good or some, better. read more

I don't recommend take out. Girl on the phone ran through the order a second time on the phone to double check accuracy which was good but got home and it was screwed up. Neither order was correct, nothing but high school kids working on a busy Friday night. Yuck. I'm sorry. I hate giving places bad reviews. I always look for the good in a place, but this was the worst Mexican I've had in TN. There was unfortunately no redeeming factor. Expensive for what you get. Cheese dip tasted like thick flour paste, salsa was bad, tacos and chimichanga were bad. I'm very surprised they are rated so highly. So glad to see this open! We live on the west side and we have lots of Mexican food choices but none this close and quick. You order through the line, then pick your own seat or carry out. They accept credit cards and cash. It's fast to get through the line, new and super clean and tidy in appearance. We were excited to see the open for business sign this week!! I don't give 5 stars to walk up counter restaurants easily, but this place was great. The staff, and I assume owner, were very warm and friendly. You place your order at the counter, receive your chips, salsa, and drink, then sit down and wait for your food to be delivered. You can also order queso for your chips. Our group ordered the tacos, pork fajitas, enchilada, and kids chicken nuggets. Sides included Mexican rice, corn, mixed vegetables, and a variety of beans. The food was delicious. I had the soft tacos one with ground beef and the other with chicken. They were both good and I'd order them again, but the beef was wonderfully seasoned and had the edge. Especially since I don't often order beef tacos. I snuck a few pieces of the pork from the pork fajitas. That is what I'm ordering next time. The pork was some of the best I've had. That'll definitely make me stop there again! I was told the enchilada was also equally as good. The chicken nuggets were above standard and the quesadilla was as expected. The cheese dip was very good too, not too spicy but spiced just enough. The rice was what you'd expect. The Mexican street corn was unique. It wasn't bad and you should definitely try it, but it does have a unique taste. It's not spicy but is flavorful. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. There's one ingredient I'm still trying to figure out. Overall it's a great addition to the area and I highly recommend stopping! read more

This is my regular Weekly go to! The staff is amazing and always go above and beyond. Never had a long wait time. Tuesday's is taco Tuesday's and tons of specials. It has a very at home like atmosphere. Suggestions on your order for one my favorite is Chile relleno but loving the ribeye fajita lately too. Make sure to ask for your type of tortilla most places automatically give you flour tortilla and I prefer corn. They also have a punch card with special discounts. Micheladas are amazing if you haven't had one I would definitely try it. You pick the beer usually go with Modelo or corona. I have tried a few of their dishes and I can honestly say that they are hands down the best Mexican food I have had around here. Actually tried this place back in February when they were just opening, but just now getting around to reviewing them. The quesadillas are excellent ! The meat quality is really high, and I can be super picky about that. Its a fast casual concept in that you order at the counter and then they bring you your food. We ordered takeout and had to wait about 15 minutes. Everything was hot and delicious. Taking away one star because they forgot part of our order, but were very polite on the phone when we got home, realized and called. So I just tried this place. The owner? Or main register guy was very nice. Ordered some burritos, guacomole, nachos and chicken nuggets. Lol. Chicken nuggets are about 4 or 5 pieces. And is actual chicken in a simple but nice flavored batter. The nachos are bad. It's literally 5 or 6 chips with some beans, cheese and maybe piece of meat on each. Side of guacomole and sour cream. Seriously? 8 or 9 dollars for that. Bullshit. The burritos are not as pictured in the menu. They are big though. The meat I tried so far is kinda meh. No great seasoning. They don't seem to have some authentic meats either. No pastor. I might leave a tip once I try the other meats. Ground beef and fajita beef. The guacamole is okay. I prefer a different taste from mine. Also tried their corn thing. It's not done like it's meant. Meaning it's not roasted and the seasoning seemed scarce. For the sauces and hot sauce. They are all good. I mainly liked the cucumber ranch sauce. It might be worth a try, but I likely won't be back. Cancun's still seems to be the best option imo. read more
