Amazing ambiance and view! It's always nice to have dinner and look at the ocean. Good service and food, but exceptionally overly priced.

I came here on a Friday afternoon with a reservation for 12:15 PM. I was seated right away outside with a beautiful view of the ocean and beach. I started with a glass of white wine and the ceviche, which was fresh and flavorful. For my main course, I had the seabass served with vegetables and what I believe was a mashed cauliflower purée - everything was absolutely delicious, and I finished every bite. My friend ordered the fish and chips and really enjoyed it as well. Valet parking is $8 during the day. It did take a few minutes for them to get the car since it's such a small parking lot and they were so busy, but it wasn't too bad. The prices are on the higher side, but worth it for the quality. The service was phenomenal, and I'd definitely recommend this spot. read more

One word.... WOW! This was a recommendation from Steve the concierge at the Fairmont and we could not be more pleased. The setting is right on the water and if you come at sunset, be prepared for a great show! The service was impeccable (thank you Valerie!!). Our server quickly got to us when we were seated, offered to take a photo and provided details on a number of dishes. We started with Brussels sprouts and they were delicious. For entrees we shared the halibut and the tuna. Both were prepared wonderfully well and had an array of interesting flavors... one better than the next. Monthly later and nada. I don't leave reviews like this normally, but this was negligent operations followed by lousy customer service. They said they had a new supplier and didn't realize that there were date pits in the salad. Really?, there wasn't just one, there were 3 in mine, and others had them too. I had no way of knowing they'd have dangerous hard things in the salad, so i bit hard onto it. And had a lot of pain, the tooth separated away from others, pulled out of its gum formation. Nils was a great server again. Poseidon really has the best patio/view/ food combo anywhere in the county. It's not cheap so we only come occasionally but it's always like a little Vacay. two of us had the croissant sandwich, two of us had the spinach mushroom omelette, which is fatty but tasty, and one got the Mediterranean omelette which is with egg whites and a lot healthier. The view is gorgeous right on the beach, the breeze feels great, and it was another fantastic meal here. And they usually still have valet parking open if there are no parking spots! read more

We have been enjoying dining at Poseidon for over 25 years. The food has really improved through the years and the view of course does not disappoint! However there is an issue that really bothers me. The servers have been there for several years and have no clue we are locals. Not their fault I guess as they see thousands of diners a week. I find it offensive when they greet us with "hey friends". I am not their friend, I am a customer. Every time throughout the meal when they say hey friend the tip goes down. Maybe this may help when they see a 15% tip and not 20%. read more

Poseidon is literally on the waterfront. The view (depending on time of day) can be breathtaking. The place is clean and modern and the service was good. I went with coworkers so I took lots of pictures but only tried the appetizers and the Chilean sea bass. The calamari was ok. The portion was tiny given the price and it was glazed with a weird sweet sauce. The coconut shrimp were good. Well cooked but overloaded with breading and sauce. The sea bass was ok. The fish was a bit dry but the vegetables were excellent. The crème brûlée and pear desserts were delicious. Honestly, you go here for the view. The food is ok but not life changing. read more

We had a table right next to the glass on the outdoor patio and it was fabulous. We watched the sunset as we enjoyed the best meal that I have ever had. I had the Yellowfin Tuna and my wife had the evening special - swordfish. Everything was perfect. The staff was friendly and attentive. The view was to die for. But the highlight of the evening was the quality of the food. I have never had a better entree in my entire life - absolute perfection. The night was still young and the last restaurant didn't have what we were looking for for our dessert, so we popped nextdoor to POSEIDON ON THE BEACH for a quick set and nightcap while we watched the sunset. Great location. Cocktails were tasty. Creme brulee was pretty good. Service was, ehhh. We didn't want to stay long and we made that clear when we arrived. Stunning little gem sitting right on the sand in Del Mar, literally. Patio seating right next to the beach with unobstructed views of the sunset and ocean. The restaurant uses heat lamps to keep the patio tables warm, but also has comfortable booth seating inside facing the ocean where you can watch the sun set while eating delicious food! We ordered the sesame crusted tuna, which was absolutely Devine! And a steak with a Maine lobster tail on the side. Valet parking was $8.00 and absolutely worth it as there is no free street parking nearby. Highly recommend this for your next celebration! Poseidon has been on my bucket list for quite some time. I really wanted to experience their patio seating right on the sand but we are more of spontaneous diners, so we were limited to their indoor bar area which did the job just fine. To start, it's $10 to valet or you can park at the meters down the main drag/Coast Blvd. We happened to snag a metered spot in the same parking lot where they valet. The whole row to the right when you pull in is metered at $4 per hour. We sat ourselves at a high top and were promptly attended to. Service here is excellent. If you go Mon-Fri they have Happy Hour from 4-6. We were only in the mood for a drink and appetizer as to not spoil dinner plans. Their music selection is awful and faint. They clearly do fine without modernizing but it's a shame to see the potential a place has to usher in a more youthful scene (it averages to 50+ demographic), but that's just not who they cater to. My husband and I enjoyed a split bottle of Chandon sparkling wine and found the tuna tataki to be delicious and refreshing. I saw them bringing many dishes by to people around us and everything looked desirable. I'm really glad to have experienced Poseidon but next time I'll try and plan ahead so I can experience the highlight of dining here - their patio. read more

I had a great experience there with a friend recently. We started with the calamari and ceviche, both were amazing. Our server Jake recommended them as well as our dinners, Seared Ahi and Short Rib. Both were excellent and we would get again. Jake was very attentive, always there when we needed him, wasn't rushing us, and making us laugh as well. The place has a stunning view of the ocean. Sat in the bar area for HH. HH is M-F 4-6. I wouldn't order the food for HH, there is so many actual good food place for HH. I definitely would check this place out for views and drinks but the apps were not good in my opinion. The wings tasted like they were warmed up in a microwave. The thing I would re-order is the coconut shrimp. Would not order the ceviche, sliders, or wings. Because of the view, maybe I'll check this place out again and order from the menu instead but not for awhile. The service was okay; I did expect a little more but I'm sure the server was tired. The bar area was packed and it seemed like they were trying to turn tables quickly. The place does have a lot good reviews so I did have a little bit of high expectations. This one of our favorite places to eat on the beach. Unfortunately Saturday evening was overcasted and no visible sunset. We were sat next to glass just which is right on the beach. They had all the gas warmers going so not cold at all. We usually get an appetizer and this time did the shrimp. They were good. She loves the Maine lobster tails here while I got the Madeira Braised Prime Beef Shortribs with an order of Forbidden Rice to go with our entrees. The food was on point. The ambience at this restaurant is lovely--right on the beach with a relaxing atmosphere--and the service during our visit was perfectly fine. Unfortunately, the food and overall experience didn't live up to the setting. The prices were extremely high for what we received, and the quality and taste didn't justify the cost. I ordered the ciopinno & raw oysters, and later that night I experienced horrible food poisoning . I was the only person in our group who ordered that dish, but two of us were sick (maybe the oysters). We called the restaurant the next day to let the manager know, not necessarily expecting anything, but simply to make them aware. His response was that he had served 11 cioppinos that evening and no one else had reported getting sick. While he did say "sorry," there was no effort to investigate further or offer any sort of resolution. It was disappointing, especially given the prices and the otherwise nice setting. Between the value for money and the way the situation was handled, this isn't a place we'll be returning to. read more

Came here for a holiday team lunch with a big group and the food was so good. I got the seabass which was light and fluffy and the roasted carrots were cooked to perfection. Everyone else's order looked really good too. I like that the portion sizes aren't too big. The view outside was amazing we sat at the corner on the far right and we saw dolphins swimming by! The only cons would be there's only valet in the parking lot and metered street parking and there wasn't a lot of shade because their umbrellas aren't movable. I made a reservation for a patio table for 3 and when we arrived early, our table wasn't ready yet...but we were able to atleast get a drink at the bar before hand. Once they had our table available, the hostess walked us out and seated us in the middle of the patio. I noticed a table by the window/beach was being cleared and cleaned up and the host told me that we could move over there once it was clean so we were happy. Well, two seconds later another party was seated there...I spent 5 minutes contemplating what we should do. It was my birthday and I specially made reservations at this restaurant because I wanted the view. I was hoping the hostess would come back with a solution or atleast an apology but she didn't so I went and spoke to her. She looked at my like a deer in headlights and when I said "I'm not sure if you saw, but another party was seated there..." she said yes, I saw... okay so were you just going to let it be and not even apologize for promising us something? It was annoying. Luckily, another table near the window opened up and our server moved us over right away. I can't remember her name but she was a sweet elderly lady. Much more accommodating than the hostess. We started with the calamari and the coconut shrimp. Bothe were basically but tasty. My husband ordered the pork chop and my bestie and I ordered the short ribs. All three entrees were huge and so fulfilling. My husband really enjoyed the pork chop. It was a perfect medium rare. My bestie and I loved our short rib and my husband even said he should've ordered the short rib after tasting a bite - hahahahaha. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful. I really liked the carrots and mushrooms that were paired with mash potatoes. We all agreed that we wished the mash portion was a little bigger. It felt like the carb portion was small. My son took us for dinner on the mother's day weekend (we went Saturday May 10) he asked me where I wanted to go I told him to surprise me. And he did! He knows I love sunsets and good food and this place has it all , the excelente service, good drinks, very good food and extraordinary views to the ocean and perfect sunset. The server we had described most of the plates on the menu so good that we wanted to order all! There's only few items on the menu but any thing you order is delicious. We order 4 different plates so we can try the food from each other plate. I ordered seafood linguine. The sauce has so much flavor, my son ordered white fish so good, bottom line all the food we order was delicious. Had brunch here recently to celebrate a birthday and it was a pleasant experience. I was a bit disappointed though, since we requested a window side table a month earlier through our online reservations and there were none available when we arrived. Otherwise, it was pretty nice to sit outside and enjoy the weather and beach views. I ordered scrambled eggs, toast, breakfast potatoes and bacon. It was fine. My companions had the croissant breakfast sandwiches, which looked delicious. The waitress was friendly and helpful and everything arrived quickly. Haven't been here in over a decade. The restaurant is right on the beach (if you did not already know). Most people sit outside, like we did, and the indoor seating looks like a cruise because of the circular seating. I was impressed by the entrees. My friend had the scallops, for which she gave me one of the three big pieces. It was really tasty, not overcooked, and the mashed potatoes was surprisingly very creamy and flavorful. I ordered the chilean sea bass, which was also cooked very well, not over done, and moist. The calamari was different--steak in pieces, instead of the normal tenacles, which I actually prefer. The menu described some Thai chili sauce but there really was very little of that but instead a side of mayo/white sauce. Service was great. I liked our server, who brought me a creme brulee or my birthday. What I do not like is the $4/hr on the meters or $8 valet in the same lot. One of the best spots to walk to is none other than Poseidon On the Beach and being a day-drinking-by-thesea affiliato I must say this is high end cuisine with happy people to tend to you. There's got to be a morning after ... so go here. They are great at handling the onslaught of a large party and strangely seating them within seconds. This is a good place to share a ton of items. I recommend the Tuna TarTar, The fish tacos, the chips and guac and bottles of sauvignon blanc to round out the meal. The calamari stands alone as some of the best I have even injested as it's not greasy and never really needed to be. This place reminds you of just that.
