So, when we discussed where we were going for Fathers Day it was an easy decision until I saw this repulsive note with their menu. We are old school - if you are looking for the newest, latest, "next big trend" in food we are definitely not a place you should choose to be dining. Yelpsters, self identifying foodies and cry babies- please, stay away - we are not a place you should dine. Pot au Feu is not foodie friendly. Swipe left! Save us all the misery. You were warned! It's been a long time since we were last here - too long, as in pre-kids, as in 25+ years ago, as in ... well, enough said. So I'm happy to re-acquaint ourselves with this premier restaurant and introduce my adult children to further their palates. And it didn't disappoint! We started with appetizers of escargot (bien sur!), terrine de campagne, and a wild mushroom pate. The escargot were succulent - only complaint was that we needed more garlic butter to sop up with the bread. The terrine de campagne was rustic, fatty, and flavorful. The pate of wild mushrooms was outstanding and delicate. For main plates, I had their crepes de boeuf in a sauce Diane - good and the sauce definitely needed plenty of bread to savor. One daughter had lamb shank, another had duck confit, and my third daughter had boeuf bourguignon. All were tasty and well-cooked but the standout was the boeuf bourguignon: so rich and deeply flavorful. My wife meanwhile, quietly enjoyed and engulfed their vegetarian cassoulet which she said was delicious and satisfying. We still had room for dessert (absolument !) and shared a wonderfully refreshing citron mousse, a rich and intense chocolate custard, and a classic crepes Suzette. Very good. What a hidden gem! If you are looking for an authentic French restaurant, then look no further. The ambience is cozy, romantic and just absolutely stunning. The service was great and the Owner came by to chat and told us a bit about the history of the restaurant. Every meal comes with bread and salad. The bread is served warm with a homemade butter. There were several meals on the menu that I wanted to try but I ended up ordering the Coquilles St. Jacques et Crevettes Lorraine, which was scallops and shrimp in a sour cream, bacon and horseradish sauce. Came here on Valentine's Day and it was totally unreal on every level, but not in a good way. My friend's employer apparently pre-paid and made reservations for her, and in hindsight I feel like he deliberately punked her just for the story. We were definitely the youngest people there by about 15 years, which was already a hilarious start. Throughout 85% of the dinner, though, not including a brief intermission, the owner of the restaurant (who clearly fancies himself a stand up comedian and loves the sound of his own voice) was giving a long-winded powerpoint presentation about historical figures and monuments in Providence. I guess it was cool to learn about some local history, but obviously not the setting one would choose for an intimate evening with a significant other. Then the food... Woof. Appetizer was a head of romaine lettuce, artichoke hearts, and shrimp that was drenched in what tasted like grocery store salad dressing and mayonnaise. Pass. Entre was a choice of duck or chicken with steamed broccoli. Both dry, unseasoned, and completely flavorless. No thank you. Dessert? A teacup filled with nutella and reddi whip. ...Seriously? My friend and I just kept exchanging looks of consternation and disbelief, since we couldn't hear each other talk over the sound of the owner prattling on to his captive, bamboozled audience. We left pretty much right after the "dessert", but looking back I wouldn't be surprised if this was actually just a loosely thrown together pitch event to try and sell geriatrics timeshares in Jupiter, Florida. It definitely had the tone and atmosphere of a drunk dad giving a rambling speech at a wedding reception, and you just let him carry on since he basically paid for the whole thing. Foies Gras, we thought it would be made in house...did not seem like it. Canned, I have that at home. Liver. I do not know how to describe it....it had an interesting taste, but not a good one. Would never order again. Salad, not fresh at all. Limp. Desert, the crepe, a chewy disaster. Owner was schmoozing with us for 10 minutes. There is limited option for vegetarians but the place is known and famous for their mushrooms. The bread there is one of the best i have ever eaten. Note that they do teach you how to bake or cook if you are interested. The soup was great, my wife doesn't eat mushrooms either so we had limited options. The owner was kind enough to make something different which was a great service that he provided by being accommodating. The table was a little small to hold all our dishes. I have been coming to Pot au Feu since the 1980s, and it continues to be truly wonderful. Bob Burke's dream continues to flourish, and that is rather comforting in a world of often frightening changes. I was with a friend from China, and so we ordered very "standard" and "traditional" choices, which at Pot au Feu are always delicious, although not as adventurous as I might sometimes choose. So I am more to blame for this "4-star" review than is the restaurant. In short, when one goes out on a limb for an unusual special at Pot au Feu, it usually hits the "5-star" mark. To start, I had the "GGGG" drink, which was sort of "all things ginger" (including housemade ginger-infused vodka) and was very delicious, and reflected the fragrant essence of fresh ginger. Recommended. We shared a large onion soup gratinee, which (as usual) was very good. It actually is a balanced soup, so the amounts of broth, onions, bread and cheese don't overwhelm the other ingredients. It is also not overly salty, and the gruyere taste is not lost to it. Entrees all come with a small salad, fresh and tasty, with crumbled bleu cheese. I have always loved their dijon vinaigrette, and it is still as flavorful and pungent as ever. My friend and I used some fresh, warm baguette to clean up the last of it. A simple procedure, but a simple pleasure as well. My friend had crepes filled with tenderloin and wild mushrooms, in a creamy (and yet light) sauce. She was very pleased with it, and there were several different varieties of wild mushrooms (it seems that in 2022, the varieties of wild mushrooms are sometimes narrow, but here a wide range were on display. I ordered the roasted duck with raspberry, which is a generous serving that includes a confit and a breast. The breast was a little drier than I prefer, but likely as a cost of the skin being perfectly crisp. With ratatouille and the roasted dill potatoes, it's now (in my creeping old age!) more than I can finish. Back in my good old days, it would have been thoroughly devoured! As we were going to walk around the river for a Water Fire event, we skipped desserts (but their chocolate pot de creme should not be missed, for first-timers!). As stated, there is something very satisfying, and by now it is also comforting, to know that after some 40 years, Pot au Feu continues its winning gastronomic ways. I used to go to Pot Au Feu for lunch regularly when I worked downtown in the early 1990s. We decided to spend our anniversary at the restaurant there this year. In most ways, the restaurant has literally not changed, which is a good thing. To begin our celebration, we opted for the champagne toast that begins with the popping of the cork with a sword. Sabrage is a technique for opening a champagne bottle with a saber. The owner of the restaurant is not just an experienced sommelier but an experienced Sabreur, and a member of an exclusive club of Sabreurs who regales on the history and practice. It is a pricey addition to a celebration but, we thought, well worth the experience, particularly since the owner has the charm and personality to make it even more so. On to the food and wine.... The wine list was short and so it was somewhat disappointing when our original choice was unavailable. Given the difficulty explained to us in obtaining our initial choice, seems logical that it is replaced for now with something of equal quality. We had the Margaux instead and it was just fine. Unlike most French restaurants, this one offers a nice selection of pate choices. The problem was our server could not keep our order straight - there were only 4 to our party. We ordered one pate only to be served another. When we brought it to the attention of the server, she just brusquely said "well, you can have that one." She never brought us what we ordered. We enjoyed the salad intermezzo and they make their own dressings and it was every bit as good as I remembered. We had a varied menu for entrees and all told, probably a 7 out of 10. Overall the food was good - I am a Paris trained chef and one of my guests is a French innkeeper. We had the: Bouillabaisse Marseilles - tasty but sauce was too watery Boeuf Bourgignon - the beef was flavorful but there was nothing else to this classic French stew usually of lardons, small vegetables in a wine sauce. It was just beef that was fairly dry. Definitely a very different preparation but flavorful. Filet Mignon aux Champignons - very good Steak Frites - also very good but the steak was so small that it was a bit shocking; it looked like just a corner piece of beef. We gave the review for stars because on balance, it was a very nice evening. The owner certainly made it very special despite the fact that the service from the waitstaff could've been better. The ambience is also quite nice and one that impressed us all because it felt like we were transported back to a Paris of old that largely no longer exists. We will come back to give it another try on a less formal night for us. Got the Boeuf a la Bourguignon, which I lucked out because it was the last one they had available for the night. Super good with the cheesy potatoes they serve on the side. We also got escargot, which I was scared to try because I had only had it once at another spot and was a bit chewy, but definitely give it try. Loaded with butter and garlic. This was my first time at Pot au Feu and it was pretty good. My friend loves this place. I tried the mushroom soup, beef bourguignon, dill potatoes, au gratin potatoes, steak and mushroom crepes, crepes suzette, and pot de creme. I loved the au gratin potatoes. The sauce on the beef is a bit salty and it is thick but the flavor is good. The other items needed a little more salt but it was on the table so no big deal. We liked the flavor of the crepes but it would have been better if the steak and mushrooms were cut into smaller pieces. Warm French bread and butter was a nice start to dinner. The owner came over and talked to us and service was very friendly. The atmosphere is nice. Overall, it was a good visit and we would return. read more

My family is French and thus as you can imagine, I have a pretty high bar when it comes to French food. When I knew hubby and I would be working on Valentine's day, I started sleuthing for a prized restaurant to take him to for a belated Valentine's and found this place. My work colleague raved about it's history and connection to Julia Child, so I got us a reservation. When we arrived we were seated immediately after being told we couldn't bring jackets to our table. I imagine it's because the space is limited, but there was no explanation so we just went with it. The dining room is down the stairs under ground, which is unique. We were seated along the wall next to copious empty and very dusty wine bottles which I thought was tacky. Our server was friends with the table behind us, and because of this, we had a rough time getting her attention throughout the evening. When we finally did get her over to order, she didn't know how to pronounce most of the dishes names, even though she said she had been working there since the 80's. We were told there was no more Foie or pate because it had sold out for the holiday, so don't get our hopes up for that. We started with drinks and soup, I ordered a glass of the Bordeaux, and a cup of the french onion soup ($8), and hubby ordered a cup of the mushroom and truffle soup ($8). For entrees I ordered the Pot Au Feu ($32) and he opted for the Salmon entree ($29). Bread came around and the server had no information on if the butter was salted or not, which caused a larger conversation than I was expecting about the changing needs of customers. Our soups came out and I was immediately underwhelmed. My French family love their soups like they like their coffee, fresh, flavorful and about the temperature of the surface of the sun. This soup was truly tepid, and the outside of the cheese was all that seemed to have been exposed to heat. Hubby's mushroom soup was much warmer, and better tasting. After much discussion, we did ask if they could warm the soup up, and instead of taking mine, she took both and remade each which I thought was overkill. Once hot, the soup was still not great, unfortunately. The entrees were beautiful, but were off taste-wise. My signature dish was hugely under-seasoned, and the veggies over cooked to the point of having little mouth feel. Hubby's dish was better, but it was also not very exciting. As I mulled over what was wrong with my dish, I heard another wait staff talk to a table next to us that valentines day left them with a lot of things out of stock and other things not used as much as they had anticipated so they were still trying to get back in the swing of things. This made sense why our food was lagging. Dessert was fine, hubby picked the citrus mousse which despite being whipped and tart, was deceivingly heavy and sweet. Prices were fair for the experience, but the food left us feeling let down. I imagine in their peak of culinary arts, service, and experience they were a force to be reckoned with, but the years have not been kind, and it shows in their food, their decor, and their training of wait staff and prep team. I was hoping for a more intimate, classy and romantic French dining experience, but instead found a rushed, aged, and lacking meal, with little eye for detail or quality assurance on the food they served. My NYC French Chef trained sister, her husband and I went here for dinner last night for the first time. We were Very excited to find an authentic French restaurant to try out! The bar was set very high and because of that, they didn't quite get us there, but I will say came very close. We loved the ambience of the place. Very old country like. Great date night place for sure. I had a gin martini with blue cheese stuffed olives that was fabulous! The olives and blue cheese were delicious! For appetizers we had the Foie Gras which was good but not great, the Escargot which was the best we've ever had ( very tender and full of flavor), the mushroom soup which I highly recommend and the French onion soup which was also good but just a tad too peppery. The homemade French bread was off the charts! And when dipped into the soups was oooh sooo gooood! Next was the salad. Make sure to get the crumbled blue cheese and use both dressings on your salad. They make a very good combo. Ok, so far so good but next is where the disappointment came in. I ordered the house special, Beef Bourguigon. I had seen pictures that made my mouth water and indeed it looked fabulous. The sauce was what saved it as it was delicious! But unfortunately the beef, although tender and fell apart, was dry as a bone! Way, way over cooked. I will be coming back but won't order that again which is ok because there looks to be many great choices. My sister had the Tournedos of beef with bearnaise sauce and it came out cooked perfect and the sauce was delicious. The last note I will mention is that the wine list was a bit disappointing. My sister owns a wine and cheese shop and she said the wines they offered were pretty cheap but were marked up ridiculously, to the degree we didn't have wine with dinner. C'est la vie. read more

Quality both service and food has gone down hill. The food use to be incredible but now it's just incredibly bad. It breaks my heart because this use to be a great spot in Providence. Went here for the first time after seeing a review in the Providence Journal. This bistro in the basement is cozy with art noveau touches. We dined on typical bistro food: starting with a wild mushroom pate (tasty) and escargots (OK but I have had better in this city). Main dishes: chicken liver (quite good but not great) the same can be said for the pot Aubrey. Ended with a rich (and delicious) chocolate torte. Had glasses of Pinot noir and lastly an espresso. The people working there were very friendly. The cost is comparable to other decent restaurants in the city - about $ 65/head (not including the tip). We will give this restaurant another try in the future and hopefully the food will be better. read more

I traveled all the way from NYC to give chef Spike's mushrooms dishes a try and wow was I impressed! A romantically dimly lit small French bistro with aromas of perfection and astute and attentive service. My mom isn't the biggest fan of French food in the first place, so this was a little bit of a hard sell to her, but she absolutely loved it as well. The pate sampler was a great starter and showed some of the diversity but yet simplicity in plating that is the mark of a great chef. My mom ordered the french onion soup that was about as traditional and straightforward as it could be, and of course delicious. Our server was on point the entire time. When she mentioned the Latin name of one of the special mushroom dishes I was thoroughly impressed. She spoke quickly and with confidence on the subject. We went on to try a few great dishes, everything perfectly seasoned. It had been a while since I had a full french meal and the richness filled me up before I could even possibly contemplate dessert. No complaints, by any means, I just should have saved more room, lol. All I can say is wow!! Everything from the food to the atmosphere was great! It's like the walk from the door to down the stairs to the dining room brings you to a completely different atmosphere that is a little French bistro. It's kinda small inside with not too many tables, and it looked like they had a bar as well, apart from the dining room. Our waitress was so enthusiastic, attentive and did a wonderful job explaining everything to us. As for the food, everything was just wonderfully exceptional. We came here for restaurant week and such there was three of us, we pretty much could try everything on the menu for it. As an appetizer I got the mushroom soup, which was good, it was earthy just needed something added to add something fresh to it. The other two in my company got the smoked salmon and the Pate sampler. I definitely loved the Pate--the mushroom truffle one was just fantastic, but as I'm not a smoked salmon fan, I could of lived without that dish. Entree wise, I got the bouillabaisse and it was just delightful the only thing I didn't like was the white fish inside, it was just over cooked and tough. They got the beef bourguignon and the coq au vin, both were wonderful. The beef bourguignon was rich and tender and the coq au vin was huge. While I didn't try the actual chicken, it looked mouthwatering. The dessert was a trip sampler with a baby creme brulee, what I believe was a Pana Cotta, and this rich and dense chocolate mousse. Great service and a cozy ambiance. We were so excited to hear there was a real French restaurant in Providence. The owner was so nice, chatted with us for a while and answered any questions that we had. The cocktails were good. The onion soup was tasty with a large amount of cheese. The 3 pate sampler was just ok. The mushroom one great, the fish one tasted like cream cheese and lox and the traditional pate was very dry. I had a mushroom and steak crepe. The mushroom, crepe and sauce was great but the steak was overcooked. My husband had duck, again the rest of the meal was great but the duck was very dry. Love the way the restaurant looks & feels. Old school ambiance & super friendly host. We had a nice conversation with him. I think I just ordered the wrong thing (I don't eat meat...) b/c I thought the food was just ok. We shared the trio of pate (pretty good) & I ordered the vegan pot au feu. It was lots of veggies in a broth. The veggies were cooked to perfection, but it was just lacking a bit. I guess I also thought it would be more stew-like & it was just broth & veggies. We had the creme brûlée for dessert & it was very good. Not sure if it's the best I've ever had, but it was better than average. The salad that comes with all entrees was decent. Nothing special whatsoever. Literally just lettuce & salad dressing, unless you opt for the blue cheese for $1.00. I would go back to try something else. Me and my boyfriend went here last night for Valentines Day, bad idea. We got checked in around 645 and our reservations wasn't till 715 so we sat by the bar. There were other couples also waiting. 20 mins later another couple came in and said they had a 715 reservation. The hostess went to check the tables and said they were ready to be seated. I was like, what?! We had 715 reservations and we were here first! Then the rest of the couples at the bar got seated and finally we got seated. The ambience is nice like an underground cellar. The waitresses were super busy but friendly. I ordered a rose sparkling and she told me when she came back with the drink it wasn't full enough as they ran out. She said she would give me a bit more once they opened a new bottle, I never got the bit more. So we ordered appetizer and drinks but it took her about 20 mins later to get our main course. Our appetizer came, it was duck pate with toasted bread. I didn't really taste the duck flavor as I've had this is other restaurants. Also there wasn't enough toasted bread. We had to spread it on regular bread. Our dinner also included a side salad with just greens and you can add bleu cheese for extra. Though the honey vinaigrette was pretty delicious. Our main course was the duck breast which was absolutely delish especially the sauce. The lamb shank wasn't bad but the sauce was too salty for me and wasn't enough meat. I had to eat some of my boyfriends duck. We opted to skip dessert as we were pretty full. Overall an okay experience but maybe next time don't come when it's a holiday. read more

I was excited to finally eat at this well known culinary legend. I wanted to give 4.5 stars but the app does not allow. For my taste--- 5 stars. But french cuisine is not for everyone so to give a general review for everyone I figured 4 would be a fair review. A very cute, romantic spot. Feels like a hug being there--- with the red walls and decor--- dark lighting, one rose with a candle lit table Feels like you were are in a french bistro --- especially with the staff greeting you in french. The service was exceptional--- our waitress was well-versed in the wines and food recommendations. attentive but not overbearing. Trio pate was great--- mushroom soup amazing and we loved the escargot. Nothing is heavily spiced but cooked to perfection. If you like salty dishes this is not the spot for you. I noticed a review about the bread being like a hot dog roll. Far from it--- just not the kind of baguette you get from shaw's. This is true french cuisine. So important to know this is a taste you enjoy before you go..... if you do you will not be disappointed--- amazing. read more

I went for dinner tonight and decided to try their Bouillabaisse. The service is very good. Prompt, attentive, friendly. Warm fresh is always offered and my dinner came with a nice fresh green salad. The dish came very well presented in a large deep plate/bowl. Large chunks of fish were visible as well as lots of shrimp, mussels and clams. Two surprises .... some octopus and a sardine. The former was not bad, but a little chewy....the latter was a challenge as I had to deal with the little bones in the fish. Overall the dish was good, a bit salty for my taste, but not bad. Really loved this place tonight. Great lighting, quiet, attentive service. The food was just amazing. Didn't realize the history about this place being the oldest French Restaurant in the US until I decided to write the review, but it makes sense. Definitely coming back. read more
