    Lobster Vichai

Amazing dinner my MIL brought us too. The flavors are delightful, Chef Jay and Stephanie are amazing and love the intimate ambiance. You will need to make reservations in advance. We had a pretty big table and I got to try a little of everything and loved it all. Some of my favorites are the Lobster Vichai, Boar Shank and Quail. Quality ingredients well worth the price.

We found a little bit of France in Southbridge, MA, of all places. We, like many of the diners who were there, came to recapture a little bit of the feel of France given travel restrictions and canceled trips. Kudos for the owners for adapting to a tough situation by placing 4 tables outside under a pop up canopy with little carpets underneath. You'll never mistake this parking lot for Paris but tough times call for tough measures and the food is what will transport you to Europe more than the atmosphere. First off, know that its BYOB with a $5 corkage fee. That's a great price and the owner provides glasses and uncorks your bottle ... I love this because it allowed us to drink our favorite wine from France vs. being limited to a selected wine list. We wanted wine, a small cheese plate and escargot to start off the meal, as this was our custom in France but were told that cheese was only served for dessert. We asked if an exception be made and were told it could not ... cheese was only to be served after the entree. So we ended up skipping the cheese and getting a sweet dessert later on. The escargot was good. It was a bot pricey but importing snails from France cannot be cheap. It had a nice basil/butter flavour and was presented well. It was a good start to the meal. If you are going to take one tip away from this review ... make it this one. (We learned it from our table neighbors) It's always wise to call in advance (day of or before) to put in your order in advance. As a small restaurant, they run out of foods throughout service but if you call in advance to let them know what you'll order, they will reserve it for you. We had a dusk reservation and by that time, only 4 dishes were left on the menu, two casseroles, swordfish and scallops. I had wanted to try the quail and my date was hoping for the bone in pork chop but both had sold out already. We now know to order in advance. It's kind of cool that you are able to do this ... and that ot's a friendly crowd. The tables talk to each other and most seem to be regulars who welcomes us first timers and gave us menu suggestions. The casseroles (pork ragout and cassoulete) were beyond excellent. The cassoulet contained huge pieces of homemade sausage and pork in a sauce of small beans. The ragout was made with tender braised pork. The flavours were fantastic and this was better than most of what we had in France. I really hope they'll put a beef bourgionne on the menu at some point as that was the one dish that's eluded us in Paris. We hsd it at 3 different restaurants there and never had a good one. If anyone can do it right, Metro Bistro can! The entrees came with a small salad and side (the stewed eggplant was amazing) on the same plate as the casserole dish. For dessert we had the cold dense chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream. We actually ordered the cherry tart but were brought this by mistake, which was fine because it looked so good. It was fantastic ... a hard cake, almost like a shortbread with an interesting chocolatey flavor. We couldn't possibly fit in another bite so skipped cheese and hope to come back soon. Small places like this are the gem of any town ... and Metro Bistro is no exception. It was honestly one of our best French meals outside of Paris. Aside from the cheese thing, the hosts were fantastic and warm and welcoming. The service was good and the food was amazing. If you are looking for a warm welcome and to be transported to France for the night, this is a great place to do it.

Cherry desert and pistachio bread pudding was so good, that we could not stop eating.

My wife and I came to one of our favorite places and go to celebration venue for dinner after getting married today. Once again, the food was absolutely amazing with a perfect pairing of dishes that make your mouth drool for every bite. Jay the owner, cook, wine maker and much more makes you feel like he's known you for years on the first introduction, and his wife is amazing as well, whom delights patrons with a magnificent song ! All of that in a quaint easy to find location. Highly suggest checking this place out!

Wow. What a *gem.* Jay's cooking is outstanding, and it feels like you're right in his living room. The starter ratatouille and quiche were phenom. Loved my shrimp entree. And with only a $5 corkage fee (note: Metro Bistrot is BYOB), you can easily slide into a 5-star experience. Will absolutely be back, thanks Jay and Stephanie!

This was our third visit to The Metro Bistrot and our party of six was looking forward toward a delicious dinner "three-peat". We were warmly greeted by Jay Livernois, co-propietor, manager and "present in the front" and the main cook and co-owner, Marie-Paule Marthe, who was born in Orleans, France and lived in the south of France for thirty years. This is a BYOB establishment, that charges a $5 corking fee (a great value), so we brought numerous French wines to accompany our meal including a Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Fumé, Bordeaux, Vouvray and Sauterne. We tried several starters including a sautéed foie gras, chicken liver pate, and salmon pate, all excellent, though the foie gras in my humble opinion, is always the choice du jour! Our main courses included Cassoulet - French roast pork, duck confit, house sausage, ragout, and lardon in a white bean casserole (superb), beef filet medallions w. cassis sauce (tender and delicious), and foie gras stuffed quail (fantastic). We shared all five desserts including Rhubarb Compote, Opera Cake and Sheba Cake and a Fruit Tart. We shared all the desserts, and all were readily consumed. Not a crumb remained. We consider Metro Bistrot to be a hidden gem, an out of the way fine dining establishment that is worth the trek. We can strongly recommend The Metro Bistrot and thank Jay and Marie-Paule for another wonderful dinner.

It almost has a homey feel and the servers are always friendly. Their food tends to be hearty and comforting. A few dishes I have tried and enjoyed include: - The cassoulet, which is not a traditional French cassoulet at all, but it is comforting and filling. I would give it an 8/10 (ask for extra bread). - The baked brie is really good and comes in a big portion. I would give this a 10/10. - Le Jardinier is an open-face veggie sandwich. It has a lot piled on the bread, so it can get a bit soggy, but it is a good lighter option if you do not want one of their heavier dishes. 7/10. - The gratin is sooooo good. It is a super decadent mac and cheese with thin slices of prosciutto. 10/10 - Chaider (not a food item) is my favorite drink. It is a mix of chai and apple cider 10/10. - The duck house potatoes and eggs are good, but if your eggs are overcooked, the dish can be a bit dry since there is no sauce. I think an option to add hollandaise would potentially elevate this dish. 7/10. The gougeres, beignets and crêpes are also good.

The space is gorgeous, the vibe is elevated without being stuffy, and on most nights the service really shines. It's the kind of place you want to love. But our Easter brunch left me feeling more "hmm" than "wow." We opted for the 7‑course holiday tasting, which sounded festive and ambitious, but the execution didn't quite match the promise. Courses arrived beautifully plated, but several felt more conceptual than flavorful, and the pacing never fully found its rhythm. For the price point and the occasion, I was hoping for a bit more sparkle -- something that made the meal feel truly celebratory, as well as plentiful. The kids' options were another miss. While I appreciate that Anya aims for an elevated dining experience, the selections didn't feel particularly kid‑friendly. When you're trying to keep little ones happy through a long, multi‑course brunch, having approachable, familiar choices goes a long way. Here, the offerings felt more like scaled‑down adult dishes than something designed with kids in mind. That said, the staff was warm, the atmosphere was lovely, and there were moments where the meal hinted at what Anya does best. There's clearly talent in the kitchen and pride in the presentation -- it just didn't fully land this time. Overall, a beautiful spot with potential for a standout holiday experience, but our Easter brunch fell somewhere in the middle. Cheers

We were seated by the window and were given freshly baked bread. We ordered the French classics: mussels, escargot, duck leg confit, and steak and fries. The mussels came out first and were pretty average. I usually like sipping the wine broth it comes with or dipping fries/bread into the broth. The escargot had plenty of oil and seasoning. It was actually too salty even though my coworker requested less salt on everything. I enjoyed dipping the fresh bread into the oil. Lastly came the entrees. I was a bit disappointed in both of them. The hanger steak was cooked medium rare like I wanted but the texture was not great. I was hoping for a more tender cut and this was a bit tough and lean. The frites were cooked well and very crispy. The duck confit was very tender but I didn't think it was amazing. Overall I don't think I will be returning to this restaurant with so many other great options around. I might be biased as I am not too familiar with French cuisine but we already sampled most of the classics already.

Upon arrival we were greeted quite quickly and my coat dispatched to the cloak closet. The hostess took us through the bar to a two top and let us know our Captain would be with us shortly. While waiting my partner and I both selected cocktails from the menu. The Captain arrived and took our drink orders, also letting us know that there would be two dessert specials, both of which required ordering at the beginning of the meal as they took time to prepare. Both the Grand Marnier Souffle and the Tart Tatin sounded wonderful. Cocktails came after a short wait, and we put in our order: To Start-Beef Tartar and Sweetbreads, followed by Caesar Salads for us both; and then Duck for my partner and Filet for myself (both medium rare). We selected a hearty Pinot Noir to go with the apps and entrees. This would be one of the few times we saw the "Captain" throughout the meal, and to be honest I'm pretty sure they were short at least one server, as most of the food was delivered by the bus boy (I can't give him the honorific of commis or assistant) or the bar tender. Bread and butter were dropped unceremoniously on the table, and that's ok because the French bread was average and the slice of butter tube was nothing special. A few grains of black or pink salt would have kicked it up a bit, a short spiel about the local bakery that makes the bread could have been nice, something about the local herbs and honey in the butter could be good (there wasn't any but hey I can dream...) Our Waiter returned with wine and offered to pour early so it could breathe but no need as it's a Pinot Noir and we have some time as we were both finishing the cocktails (which were also very well made and tasty), but the offer was appreciated. Appetizers came , and the bus boy had to be told who got which one, but to be honest the sweetbreads were just fantastic. The beef tartar was good but nothing amazing. The wine went very well with both. This is where the night turned a bit south, as the "salads" came out. Using a 6inch ring mold, the kitchen chopped romaine to the point where it was smaller than ¼ inch by ¼ inch sized, then tossed that in a very light dressing consisting of mostly anchovies. Finally the entire ring of lettuce was crusted with bread crumbs (and I assume parmesan) providing a 1/2 inch tall salad 6 inches across with gritty topping and tasting very much of umami but not so much like Caesar salad. To the point where we couldn't eat them and they had to be taken off the bill. Entrée Time. Once again the inability to code the ticket so that the servers know which entrée goes to which guest is just subpar. The duck, while crispy on the skin was way past medium rare and seemed a bit small for a full duck breast. Sauce and Rillette was pretty good. Filet (when I pronounced the 'T' during the ordering process the server didn't understand, but I guess that's just me being picky) was also well past medium rare, the bordelaise was fair and the beets were great. We ate the food as it was there and we were now hungry and realizing this was not to be the amazing meal that we thought it would be. Our bus boy came back to clear and take coffee orders. I was also going to get a Grand Marnier to go with the souffle and cork the remainder of bottle 2 of the Pinot Noir but when I asked for an Americano he was completely lost so I just asked for a 'cup of coffee' and my partner had a double espresso. I didn't want to burden this poor guy with more things he didn't know about like aperitifs. The Souffle came out and busboy tried to make a show of breaking the crust and adding crème anglaise to it, but it just didn't work for him, maybe because the crème anglaise was so think it didn't pour it kinda glopped off the spoon. That's OK because when we broke into the souffle it turned out to be fancy scrambled eggs (so they overcooked or overwhipped or both). The tart tatin was again 6 inch ring mold sized and looked like a fried egg white on a piece of toast. True it tasted good but it was in no way shape of form a decent Julia Child like tart tatin. The server came over and I asked him to remove the souffle and also informed him that his tip wouldn't be so very good as he didn't check on the cook on the entrees nor the dessert until it was pretty much time for the check. After removing the two salads and the desert, our bill was still over $400 for the meal, which is, to be completely honest, about $200 more than it was worth.

What hasn't changed is the consistency. This remains one of the most reliably excellent restaurants in the Boston area, and still one of my all-time top five--while others that once held that spot haven't quite held up. One thing has changed, though: the Ghost of Mary. Scotty, the former bar manager, created what's still my favorite cocktail of all time. When he left, the drink left with him (by mutual agreement), and while he generously shared the recipe with me, I've never quite managed to recreate it at home. It was clearly meant to be made by the expert. That said, Sycamore hasn't missed a beat. The space is still as comfortable and quirky as ever, the food remains consistently excellent, and the current bar program is in very capable hands. The only thing that was missing is the coffee beans but still good. Thanks Sycamore for another fabulous dinner and evening. Thanks Kale Salad for being the best ever. I know I will be back for another one sometime soon. Cheers~
