Beef steamed momos (with spicy chutney and pickled radish)
    Rohini G.

Really enjoy the momo from this truck! They are cash only but are very reasonably priced ($7 for 8 large momos - I got the beef ones). The pickled radish cuts the spicy chutney well too. They package it well so it is easy to grab and take on the go! The service is fast. Love making a pitstop here in Jamaica en route to the airport/back home. The actual momo is quite mild in flavor (some of the reviews note they're not well seasoned but that is just how momo is so I did not expect it to have any more flavor). The wrappers are quite thick and heavy but I think that is standard for the momo in the area. Nepali and Tibetan momos I've had elsewhere tend to have thin wrappers. Overall great food for a quick stop and affordable price!

Veggie momos rule!!!! I just had to announce that and here's why: I was originally debating between whether to give three or four stars, but I think three is neither good nor bad, and my experience both times, was good and then bad. The first time I went I ordered veggie momos and ten cute momos came in the tin. It came with a tiny white sauce and a tiny red sauce. I'm assuming the white sauce has dairy, so I didn't have any as lately I'm avoiding dairy. The red sauce is super spicy; a teeny bit goes a long way! You can see the hot pepper seeds inside, if you don't believe me. The veggies were fresh and steamy, the momo was al dente. Quite the perfect ensemble. On the second instance, I wanted to get more veggie momos, but they were out and I had to try something else. I asked if the beef meat was gamey, and the kind man said, "No." He described it to be lean meat used. I figured that chicken was chicken and I wasn't sure which option to get. The man in the truck suggested the beef as it was a more popular option, which I find interesting - in the Indian capitol of JH. I asked if I could do half chicken and half momos and he provided that to me for the same price as if I were to have gotten the veggie dish. I also asked for two reds and 0 whites. I still only needed one red... the other one I'll save for cooking escapades. I tried a beef momo and it was awesome. Perfectly seasoned and went extremely well with the red sauce. The chicken looked funky but tasted good and the red sauce took over - so some I would eat without red sauce. So, why the three stars???? One word: CARTILAGE. EW ! No one likes chewing on cartilage. Though the meats were okay in flavor and all, the quality of each momo was not up to par. I took a bite into a beef one and found myself chewing on what felt like brains..... but it was cartilage around some chewy fat. I then decided, to eat a chicken momo because I was too grossed out to eat another beef momo, and that bite, just so happened to be, was another large piece of cartilage. You know that white long cartilage a chicken has..... that was what I got. Ick!!!! I started to gag and at that point, though I had four momos left and the others might have been okay, I tossed it all out. I couldn't bare the sight of them and from here on in.... I'm all for veggie momos! The truck looks moderately clean. I haven't gotten any diseases or food poisoning so that's good. It's hard to peer inside when the person is further down from the person on the truck. It's not always the same person serving too. The first time it was a kind woman. Amp up the quality of the meats - aka: no cartilage, and I'll upgrade my review in the future. Happy eats! PS - There's a momo festival each year! I think there's one this Sunday 9/15/2019. Check it out!

I do wish I was a little taller But I don't wish that I was a baller And though I'm from the B-Lo I came here with Skee-Lo And enjoyed the Momo from Potala! What an interesting food truck. Serving Himalayan dumplings or something like that? Yeah. I'll take it. I think this is a Yael rec, and I owe her so many amazing and interesting food experiences, so even if it's not, she can take the credit for it (whereas Barbie only takes cash). The guy here is very confident in his own product and was telling me how absolutely amazing it would be with the white and red sauces mixed. A lot of hype from the net and from the dude, and I kinda appreciated that because it led me to rush over here close to closing and try it. I thought it was good but I never thought it was great. Still, for a ridiculously good price and with really nice service and very tasty filling, it's hard not to give this place 5 stars. However it's right next to Sammy's Halal Cart so make sure you try that one. This is one of those 5s that still isn't my fave.

I have seen this cart for about 3 years now and this is the 1st day I finally said I would try it. I kept hearing great things about it and it did not disappoint. The momos are pretty good. The meat momo tastes very nice but the dough is quite thick except in the center where the juice from the meat has softened it. There is no major flavoring on the meat but it tastes 'meaty'. I like that a lot. The meat is like a meatball wrapped in a blanket. The potato meatball is good too but I ate the inside and left out the dough....only because I didn't want to eat too much dough. The hot sauce is very spicy so I mixed it with the white sauce.... a nice balance. The price is great too. They only serve steamed momos though; not fried. . Mera's Tip: mix the two sauces to calm the heat.

This is my #1 favorite momo. They give 8 momo for only $5 which is super cheap The meat inside is very juicy. I prefer the beef over the chicken. The wrapper is not too thin and just thick enough. The wrapper is also nice n chewy.the white sauce taste perfect with it and makes it more juicy. Always served fresh. It usually comes very hot so can wait 15 min before eating. They are available late at night. .

Despite it making it's debut last year, it feels like Potala Fresh Food has been around forever. The cart is usually across the street from the Halal corner along 37th & Broadway, unintentionally hidden from the usually very busy 74th street and around the corner from the subway station. While there are a good handful of Tibetan restaurants in the area, Potala Fresh Food seems to be the only Tibetan food cart in the five boroughs. It's owner and frequent Momo master, is Tashi, a mild mannered native Tibetan who in soft English and loud Mandarin tells me he's delighted to have me try his food. He briefly experimented with serving all sorts of non-Tibetan food last year from donuts to chicken and rice, all of which no longer seem to be in the mix. The cart has a lot of pretty random food pictures lined up around the window to suggest there is more variety, but the only thing he's selling are momos, a type of beef dumpling popular in the Himalayas and northern India. And while I've had momos in at various Indian joints in Jackson Heights, something is different about the Potala version. They're steamed fresh and the dumpling skin so smooth, the textures are silky in the palate. The juices from within are soup dumpling like (hello Shanghai!) but are considerably more hearty and filling. $5.00 gets one 8 momos with a bottled water, which by food cart standards is a solid deal. Beware of the hot sauce, it packs some serious heat. The owner also mentioned to me his cart is available 24 hours, but I haven't seen it past 1AM in these parts of Jackson Heights in these last few months. There has also been word of the cart being relocated to midtown (http://midtownlunch.com/2010/05/20/queens-tibetan-cart-spotted-in-midtown), but I hope he doesn't jack up the prices because of Manhattan alone. He has mentioned that his frozen dumplings are the most recommended, which he sells by the sack in increments as little as 20 to 100. They're spendier than the average sack of Chinatown frozen dumplings, but still slightly cheaper than eating them a la carte (pun intended). I would love to see more Tibetan carts around, be it Manhattan or in some other borough. Preferably one that has a wide array of street side Tibetan quality dishes, but when beggars can't be choosers, I'll go with the momos from Potala Fresh Food.

There's no reason anyone should complain about 8pc momos for $5. Saw some reviews stating the wrapper was too thick. Just so all are aware, Tibetan momos have thick skins and there are certain styles that are even thicker. The Nepalese momos have thinner skins and tend to hold more soup but that's a different story. Get beef (or red meat) momos if they're Tibetan and non-beef for Nepali momos. The chicken momos we got were fairly bland but that's the problem with chicken momos unless you get over zealous with masala and onions/garlic. Also ask for the hot sauce/spice if you don't see it in your box.

Lucked into stopping here after seeing the long line at Sammy's. Simple menu on the side of the truck showing the different momo options. Ordered the Eight Steamed Beef Momos ($5) - fantastic price and the food comes out in five minutes. Despite not holding the box in any proper way, the momos stayed intact by the time I got home. Love the dough texture as it has just a little give to easily bite into. The beef is tender and retains a lot of flavor. The food also comes with two sauces: a tangy white sauce and a super hot red sauce (beware: spicy). Overall a filling meal that doesn't break the bank. Lady in the truck is super efficient - as she takes/makes orders with ease. Great place to stop off quickly after a train ride.

So after work on this dreary rainy day, Instead of going straight home to make dinner then crawl on my comfy bed with a good novel, I decided to stop at Jackson Heights & go on my own mini Momo crawl. I bought an order of the steamed chicken Momos from Potala, and an order of beef steam Momos from Momo Bros which recently located diagonally across the street on 73rd & broadway. Maybe my expectations were too high, I was expecting an explosion of flavors and juicy soup with each bite of these Momos, but I felt they were very ordinary. Yes they were tasty, (although I felt the skin on both was too thick), but I don't think I will make a special trip just for this. Maybe it's just a preference but I think I would rather stick with soup dumplings then Momos, or if I'm really craving dumplings I can get them around my way in Flushing. Oh, and in regards to which is better, Potala's skin was a bit less thick, so I would go with Potala.

    Freshly prepared yummy momos.

It's kind of like a middle eastern quesadilla with cheese, vegetables, and meat but with a thinner bread layer that's crispy. The portion size of this was enormous--I'd honestly say it's enough for 5-6 people to share. Between the two of us, it stretched into 6-8 meals, and it reheated exceptionally well in the air fryer without losing its texture or flavor. We also ordered the beef shawarma platter and the chicken shawarma wrap (which was only around $13). I was pleasantly surprised by the chicken shawarma--it was flavorful, well-seasoned, and not overly dense or dry like shawarma can sometimes be. It ended up being one of the better wraps we've had! If you're debating whether this place travels well for delivery, I'd confidently say yes. The food maintained its quality remarkably well, which isn't always the case with Mediterranean food. That said, after this experience, I'm even more excited to visit the restaurant in person one day. One thing to keep in mind: the portions are generous and many of the dishes are quite hearty. If you're trying to eat lighter or are watching your calories, I'd recommend opting for one of their salads, like the fattoush, alongside your meal. Highly recommended whether you're ordering through DoorDash or dining in. We'll definitely be ordering again--and making a trip to Astoria to experience it fresh from the kitchen.

The food has always been freshly prepared, in large portions, and cooked quite well. I'm thankful that has not changed much. On my most recent visit, we got a Mix Grilled and Vegetarian Plate to share between four people. There was so much food that we did not have dessert next door as originally planned. Prices are higher nowadays, but you are receiving great value for what you pay. Both chicken shawarma and the beef kufta from the Mix Grilled tasted great, especially with the provided zesty white sauce. I also added hot sauce to mine, which made it more satisfying. The chicken kebab was not bad, it had a nice char, but slightly dry. All of the accompanying humus (a bit salty), salad, rice, and garlic pita were excellent too. For the Vegetarian Plate, though good, I would like the falafels to be fluffier. The best things I enjoyed on the plate was the fried eggplants and baba ghanosh. It also comes with cous cous, which was good. Fresh middle eastern cuisine, made with quality ingredients and care, this restaurant may not be my first choice in Astoria because it's not as sexy as some of the other offerings, but I'm glad that they are still around when I just want a quality meal at a reasonable price.
