So it's been 8 years since I left my last review on this Potbelly location and boy do I feel old! But I feel I need to update the stars on here because I come here regularly for lunch and I can't remember a time in the last few years where I have been angry or upset at the service. They are so efficient at this location that even when there is a long line, I am in and out of there in a matter of minutes. I love the sandwiches here and the options and recently I had their chilli. Potbelly's has chilli?!! What?! It tasted wonderful. Especially now that Chicagonis turning back into its "Chiberia" phase, it's comforting to know a bowl of warm chilli is nearby. Also ordered a group order for the first time online yesterday in a very long time and food was ready at the promised time. I was very pleased and all orders were in the bag. Also liked that the employee handling the pickup orders asked to see my receipt. The ambiance here is that everyone is always friendly and so helpful at this location. They have enough small tables on the first floor if you wanted to dine in, and they do have a second floor but not sure if that is open as I have never been up there to check. I put in an order that the website said would be ready within 15-20 mins. Soon as I pay, all the sudden I find out it's gonna be over 45 minutes. I have a job, my lunch is gonna be over by the time it's ready. So I call to cancel the order. He puts me on hold. I'm sitting on hold for like 15 mins. So I finally go to the physical store to tell them I need to cancel. Figure this is because they're busy, right? Wrong, it's totally dead. There's some guy who said he'd been there for a half hour and his name never even showed up on the board. The girl refuses to talk to me for some time, and when she finally does she refuses to speak to me with even basic decency. She said I'd get a refund but, sure enough, never got my money back. I'll be honest, I only go to this one because I work in the building, but I like the variety and the ability to customize my order. I agree with Emily C and Matt B., the pick up advance leaves a lot to be desired. I like the new cabinet with food orders (and apparently the honor system) for picking up. This last time I just got chips and coleslaw, but a while back I ordered soup in advance, and it wasn't there when I arrived. I was told to come back in a while, came back, STILL no soup. They had not opened it yet, and I was watching my sodium so I did not want to take another soup to save time, but I eventually did. Stopped in here for lunch since it was across the street from where I was working. It was a little before 1pm when I arrived and the line was quite long but fortunately it moved along pretty quickly. I went with the turkey club on a regular roll and added avocado but skipped on the tomatoes. I took my sandwich to go. Very tasty sandwich that left me plenty full for the remainder of the afternoon. Besides the normal incredible toasted subs and shakes that all Potbelly's has this one has: -Two floors of seating -Outdoor seating on the river in the summer! -Frequent troubadors playing music -Friendly people that take your order in advance then throw it along a line overhead like a Pirate sending a message up the mizzenmast -More friendly people makin' sandwiches This was my go-to Potbelly's when I was in the Loop previously, and is now again my go-to. I've only eaten at the Potbelly's in Chicago but I'm pretty sure they are other places. Strangely every one I've ever been in has live music during lunch, which is good and bad. Great if you're by yourself but tough if you want to talk during lunch because these spaces aren't that large and the music can get loud. Lord help me!! Thinking about ordering ahead so you can pop out of the office and pick up your lunch in timely fashion? THINK AGAIN! I ordered this morning at 9:30am for a 12pm pickup (you would think 2.5 hours would be enough time to make a sandwich) and I arrived a couple minutes before noon (in hopes that my order would be ready even earlier). Boy was I wrong! Not only was my order not prepared by noon, I had to ask for it to be prepared before the poor guy behind the pick-up counter even thought about doing it! Anyone who had ordered online for pick-up was waiting at least 20-30 minutes for their order, which is just sad that such an easy concept that's carried out flawlessly by concepts like Panera or even Blaze can't even be remotely replicated by Potbelly. Having to wait 30 minutes for an order that should have been ready when I walked in the door is unacceptable and frankly, is not something I can risk having happen again. I was almost late to an afternoon meeting as it was, and would much rather spend money with an establishment that understands that time is money and I'm paying you to save me time, not waste it. Don't waste your time for subpar food with subpar service. Choose one of the 20 other lunch spots within a 2 block radius. read more

Grabbed a sammich and soup to go. A combo meal would be nice and seems obvious for a soup and sammich place, so that would be my main bit of constructive criticism. This Potbelly's was efficient, and the staff was friendly. It's about 55 seconds from Union Station, where I was headed, which was very convenient. I like Potbelly's system, though--they take your basic order while you're at the back of the line (meat and bread), then you talk to someone about the fixings (mustard, mayo, seasoning, onion, tomato, lettuce). Pretty basic sammiches--white or wheat bread, a few meats, and a few toppings. 2 soups per day--the chicken noodle was fine. Basic soda options, as well as fruit-water drinks and IBC-brand stuff. read more

I moved from one LaSalle office building with a Potbelly to this location, and this place seems to lack common sense compared to my prior spot. They both deal with a similar lunchtime rush, but this location acts like it's overwhelmed all the time, no matter how few people are there. The employees ask what you want on your sandwich, then talk to each other so you end up getting asked the same question repeatedly, then are promptly ignored until someone realizes how long they've been working on your sandwich. If you order a salad, you end up in line purgatory with a salad person so busy making new salads they ignore the waiting people blocking the line and forget to hand out the salads that are finished. This morning I went in curious about the oatmeal, and there was one employee helping people who had to run back and forth from prep to the register. No one was at the head of the line taking orders. The sole employee was obviously angry, and I don't blame him. Finally, another employee showed up and started taking orders starting at the back of the line, completely skipping all the people who had been waiting patiently. Our options seemed to be to wait on the poor guy still doing double duty, or go to the back of the line to get our order in. I'm not the only one who threw my hands up and walked out. read more

Okay, I'm ready to give this the weirdest positive review I think I've ever written. I walked in here on a train layover, not wanting to venture too far away from Union Station. I ordered the Mediterranean something. I was starving. I had been eating train food for two days and I smelled and I hadn't showered and it was hot. It was a day that I needed something good, healthy, and filling, and since I dig not-terrible Subway-like sandwiches, this seemed like the place. Mediterranean things are usually the way to go, since they tend to be packed with flavor. So I ordered what I think was the Mediterranean sandwich, but may have been called something else. It was tasty. It had a spicy sauce, the feta was rich in flavor, it was warm and it was filling. I also ordered a smoothie of some sort that was not as great but not bad. I think it was the mixed berry, but I may be making that up. So after eating it I was walking along and I was trying to figure out what the sauce tasted like. It was a good sauce, but it had a distinct, familiar flavor, and burned a little. After walking along for a while it hit me - the sauce tasted in many ways like acid reflux - those little vomits that burn your throat a little and otherwise are unremarkable. But I mean... It was good. So now I don't know what do to. Apparently I'm a big fan of acid reflux. So I would absolutely recommend this sandwich - without a doubt. Get this sandwich. But you know... I don't know. Let me know if it tastes the same to you, because I'm weirded out that I like a sandwich that reminds me a little of GERD. read more

Almost every day, I call Potbelly and order a Chicken Salad Salad. Chyna "Thank you for calling Potbelly on Wacker and Adams!" Me "Hey, it's Meredith!" Chyna "Hey girl, you want the usual." Me "Yup, extra croutons, Fat Free Viniagrette!" Chyna "10 minutes, have a great day!" I go in, go right up to the counter and avoid the crazy line that wraps around twice and Chyna is there with her braiding pony tail and a smile as big as Asia. I get my salad, pay her, wish her a great day, and I'm out in a matter of minutes. She once exclaimed to the entire Potbelly that I was one of her favorite customers. I was slightly red in the face, but I deserved my award of spending endless amounts of monies on the deliciousness of the CSS. read more

I know when I venture out to lunch along with the masses of buddies around the office, that I'm taking my chances on speed and efficiency. I haven't been to a Potbelly's in years. I Loved that they had someone taking our orders through the long line. The advertisers earned their wings since every picture of the Mediterranean sandwich made me crave it more. The line moved quickly and it wasn't long before i was back at my desk with my first Mediterranean sandwich. Spicy Hummus, Where have you been all of my life!!???!! Also not a great idea to have the cleaner swabbing down the tables with a bleach solution while people are there during the lunch rush. With a couple of bites left, I packed up and left. Just visited Potbelly's for the first time in a few months, wow the sandwiches have gotten smaller. I got a regular wreck and it was the size of an appetizer. The taste was still great, but the value not so much. I just saw they are planning to increase their number of stores, they must be planning to keep their product costs the same. The long line during lunch hour goes VERY FAST. like 8 minutes. But there is a girl who works here, she's blonde and wears glasses. She can't make sandwiches. I grab a sandwich from here probably 100x a year and everytime she made mine, it's soaked in oil from the hot peppers. Lady, I just want the hot peppers, not soaked the bread in the oil. I work in this building, and am a semi-regular. The lunch people don't ask for my name anymore. :) Today I ordered lunch. For some reason, there was a miscommunication and my order wasn't prepared. Mistakes happen. What stands out was how this was handled. I was checked ion, taken care of, everyone was polite and contrite and even gave me some free sandwich coupons. This is a good place to grab a sandwich during the week if you work in the Loop. I don't usually like toasted sandwiches, but I do like Potbelly's tasty concoctions. I always get the Italian on wheat with hot peppers, pickles, lettuce tomato, herbs and oil. It's delicious! Then again, I am biased because I love anything with salami on it. Then I get a shake and an oatmeal cookie if I'm feeling like I deserve a treat. The sandwiches are affordable and the line moves fast. I'm a fan! read more

Obviously service varies from one Potbellys to another, and this one just is so frustrating. It's the closest one to my work that serves breakfast so I go here all the time (I love Potbellys breakfast sandwiches). If you order the mushrooms on your sandwich, they will forget to put them on. I don't understand how from the time I order to when they put everything together two seconds later that they forget that I said mushroom, but they always do it. If you order the mushroom on your sandwich (which they have to put on before it goes through the oven), make sure you double check when it comes out that they're actually there. read more

I have never had a bad sandwich here... and the people behind the corner are super friendly. There's one across the street from my Chicago office and one in the Midway airport in Chicago. They have great sandwiches and can make them hot, which is what I don't like to do at home. Can't miss with Potbelly's This is my favorite location to go to or order from or get a delivery from. I don't know, it just feels right and everything is always perfect. As with any popular lunch haunt in the Loop it pays to know when to go. If you're strictly a Noon to 1 luncher, treat yourself to the delivery service to avoid the crowds. I'm a huge fan of the skinny version of the Wreck sandwich and have recently switched to the Wreck salad [sans croutons (even though they are quite good)]. When I'm not watching carbs or calories I splurge on their most excellent milkshakes. While I deem them to be a bit expensive, the cookies are wonderful too. The staff from those assembling at the counter to people answering the phone to the delivery guy [shout out to KEVIN wOOt!] are friendly, professional and effecient. Bravo, Potbelly! read more

When I have to order lunch for a meeting, this place is my no brainer choice. It's fast, easy, always right and the sammiches are tasty as heck. They've never gotten an order wrong at this location. I also have developed n addiction to the veggie on wheat with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. I could eat that everyday if I didn't worry about having a 4 foot wide ass. The most impressive thing about this place is the lunchtime relay they have set up. It's so busy from 11:30-1:30 yet somehow they have developed a system that gets everyone through pretty quickly. Not only are they efficient, the employees manage to stay chipper as they work endlessly on sandwich after sandwich. I can't decide which is better: the shakes or the cookies. This will probably be the only time I give a chain the full salute. Not much needs to be said about the food here. It's pretty tough to fuck up a Potbelly's sandwich, and recovering heroin addicts wouldn't need methadone if they could get their hands on the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. All at a very reasonable price. But it's the great location and exceptionally friendly staff that even set this Potbelly's apart from the others. I can't remember ever patronizing a fast food establishment--or any restaurant--where the employees enjoyed their jobs half as much as they do here. Mile-wide grins, laughing, and occasionally breaking into song. They'll remember you if you come around more than once, and in the unlikely event that they do make your sandwich wrong, they will fix you a new one just like that, despite the line that usually runs dozens of people deep during the lunch rush. Quibbles with this location are few and far between. The decor is over the top, but it's just the standard Potbelly's nonsense you'd expect. They also occasionally have an acoustic guitarist strumming and singing over the upstairs seating area. I find it rather troubling that this north side bar phenomenon has found its way into a Loop eatery. Pretty soon they'll have 25-year old white guys playing acoustic guitar everywhere in the city. In the waiting room of the doctor's office, at the gym, inside your cubicle. Nowhere will be off limits. If the Oasis covers become a bit much and the weather's not too bad, though, you can take your tray outside and eat by the river. Watching sailboats drift by on your lunch hour is therapeutic. read more

I'd give 0 stars if I could. Close to my job so tried it at lunch, ordered a skinny TKY. My sandwich wasn't ready (they didn't explain why), but I was told to pay anyway. Even after I paid I just stood there waiting for 5 mins-no one said anything. I asked where my sandwich was again and still no explanation. I asked for the manager which they refused. I called management after I left and they supposedly refunded my order WHICH I NEVER RECEIVED (it's now been 3 wks and I have Chase bank so it would've come through by now). I wandered out of Union Station trying to catch a quick bite between trains and this was the first place I saw! Long line, very crowded, but excellent service and very friendly staff! I always go with the turkey on wheat in it is very hard to resist the chocolate chip cookies! Soooo good! I love that Potbelly's toasts their sandwiches, although sometimes after toasting I feel like the bread cuts your gums a little? (Do you? Maybe my gums are just sensitive?) On this particular occasion, I told them "I'll take everything!" on the sandwich.... upon the first bite I realized hot peppers were included in everything and man were they hot! After sweating through my sandwich, I think I'll say hold the peppers next time! My only complaint is that you need to ask for a key to get into the bathroom-- I had a lot of luggage with me so it required some effort to keep going back to the counter to get the key and return it but I understand why they make you get a key too! read more

Good and fast for lunch. The sandwiches are hot and freshly toasted. When I say toasted I don't mean they put them in the microwave like at Subway. If you are starving a Potbelly sandwich might not fill you up, but good for standard hunger. If you can find the double chocolate cookies, get one! read more

Ordered online 15 minutes in advance and still had to wait long enough the line to cycle through twice. It's ridiculous that using a feature designed to save time actually takes twice as long as just showing up and ordering direct. This is the 2nd out of two times this has happened to me here. This is my ever sturdy back up plan for lunch. This has to be one of the best locations for speed and efficiency. There is ALWAYS a line, but somehow, I never seem to be waiting for long. My favorite choice for lunch is either the TKY (only 400 calories) or the Turkey thin-cut (less bread, but more meat - good for when you are hungrier). If you are looking for a sweet treat, try a chocolate malt or the cherry-chocolate-granola cookies (amazing and only 100 calories a piece!). Just remember, they DO move the line fairly quickly! read more

My office had another catered lunch from Potbelly. Coming from out of town, I was curious about a place with the name Potbelly, but quickly, after being around the city, I realized that Potbelly Sandwich Shop was a franchise. Nevertheless, the food was ok. I remember having two halves of different sandwiches. These sandwiches were definitely juicy. The bread tasted fresh and the sandwiches were warm. I was pleasantly surprised, but the sandwiches were kind of plain. I couldn't tell the difference between one sandwich from another. Sometimes, the sandwiches would get a little too wet. However, for the convenience of this place, it's better and probably healthier than McDonalds and tastier than Subway. I can't say I have much of a desire to go to another Potbelly Sandwich shop, but at least now I know they serve some decent sandwiches. read more

Like every other Potbelly Sandwich Shop I've been too, the sandwiches are good. Downside to this particular location is the amount of traffic that it receives. Good for the business, but annoying for the customer since the lines are MAD long.
