    Sugar Cookie
    Richard V.

Rating: 3.8 Stars I have had Potbelly Sandwich Shop in the past, and they make good sandwiches. This was my first experience with their Sugar Cookie. As a cookie reviewer, it is my duty to put a review online. I was given their Sugar Cookie as a thank-you gift. It was just an average sugar cookie. I much prefer sugar cookies that are soft and gooey; this was very crumbly and dried out. I am not sure that I believe that it was baked fresh since it cracked on its own from being dried out. The edges of this Sugar Cookie were the best part. Also, there was too much granulated sugar on top. I wish this place was close to the River so that I could try their sandwich more often!

STL is such a fun place had a great weekend visiting. We had stayed in Clayton and gotta say.. you guys ROCK! Couldn't get enough of that meatball sandwich - I went back twice in one day!! Appreciate you guys for what you do and being such a staple in Clayton making delicious sandwiches! Keep on keepin' on and can't wait to come back!!

First time here, unfortunately my last. But here's the catch... It wasn't a bad experience, just grossly underwhelming. The decor says trendy farmhouse (which I love), but the food just wasn't great. It was just ok. I got the original Italian sandwich which sounded great but was very one note in its flavor. Salty meats and not enough cheese. It was a little better when I added some pickle and tomato to balance the flavor but overall just ok. I kept thinking it would be much better as a cold sandwich. The chili was again just ok and had a base of meat that was very finely ground but did not go down well. Kind of Grindy and chokey. I'll pass!

When I'm in downtown Clayton and craving a sandwich, this is my number one spot. I have come here a few times for lunch and have always left content. I like to get a regular Turkey Club on white bread with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and mustard. I make it a meal so that it comes with chips and a drink. I come here typically during the lunch rush, but the service is really fast so I have never had to wait long. In case you don't know, after you order your desired sandwich, you tell them what condiments you want on your sandwich before you pay, even though those condiments may already be listed with the sandwich you ordered on the menu. If you decide to eat here rather than taking your food to-go, it's not too noisy inside and there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy your food. In downtown Clayton, you have an abundance of places to choose from when searching for a bite to eat, but if you're craving a sandwich I recommend checking this place out.

I liked the bread, but the toppings were gross. Black avocado and cucumber way past its prime.

I came here for the first time, wanting a sandwich and wanting to try a new spot. I was greeted as soon as I entered. Very quaint establishment: I KNOW the name of the place says "grocer", but I was still under the impression that this was a sandwich shop and it's not. Blame my hunger, ok??? It is a grocery store, and a small one at that. I head to the back to the deli and the butcher was super helpful with answering ALL my questions. Learned more about how everything works and more. All sandwiches are pre made and once they sell out, they're gone. There was a turkey sandwich and a roast beef one left. I opted for the turkey sandwich, asked for a side of remoulade sauce that's originally used for the shrimp po boy I believe. I bought a bag of chips to go with it. Total was about $15. The sandwich was delicious. LOADED with turkey and arugula it had a dill spread on it, and it was also sooo good. the remoulade helped give it more flavor and kick. All I needed was some onion slices (tear) I will definitely be back.

Since this place is such a staple, we figured we had to give it a try. The place was absolutely packed, which clearly shows it's a local favorite. Even with how busy they were, our pickup order was ready on time -- actually before the scheduled pickup since I arrived about five minutes early. The atmosphere definitely had that classic local sandwich shack vibe and seemed like it would make a great casual lunch spot for almost any occasion. Unfortunately, the food itself just didn't live up to the reputation for us. We ordered the hot salami sandwiches, which they're known for, but they were extremely greasy and the only flavors that really stood out were mustard and grease. We expected a lot more flavor and balance considering it's their specialty item. We also placed a large luncheon order of 10 sandwiches. Everyone was satisfied overall and the food was decent enough, but nothing really stood out or made us excited to come back. We personally prefer Adriana's for both flavor and overall quality. One of the biggest disappointments was that none of the sandwiches had cheese on them, even though we paid an extra $2 per sandwich for the garlic cheese bread upgrade. That was frustrating considering the additional charge. Honestly, I'm guessing we may have just caught them on an off day because it's obvious this spot has a loyal following. We still appreciate supporting local STL businesses and can understand why so many people love it -- it just wasn't quite the experience we were expecting.

A guy from my running group asked me which way it was, and I was like, "Uh, I think it's that way." A few places on this strip all have similar awnings. I thought I was lucky finding such a good spot. By the time I was done with my run, maybe an hour later, all of Clayton was an absolute ghost town. It makes me wonder what they'd have to put here to get people to visit Clayton during the evening, a 7 Brew? Inside is more along the lines of a bar, with a number of beers on tap and decor that may have been purchased from a Kohl's. I appreciated the way they had the beers on tap written on the wall in ginormous fonts, and I'm sure the elderly are similarly appreciative. Sometimes you ask these waiters what beers they have on tap and they act like they're doing you a favor by listing them. I asked this hillbilly they've got waiting tables at the Syberg's over on Dorsett what beers they have on tap, and he just said they have 30 of them. Uh, thanks? I wonder if he counted them. I went with the 4 Hands Incarnation, which I have at least once a week, because I get it for free. It seemed less "high gravity" than it does when you get it in the tall cans.Hmm... Usually, my move at these burger places is to order a bacon cheeseburger or a specialty burger that has bacon on it. 5 Star had such a burger listed first on their menu, making my choice easy enough. I toyed with the idea of ordering the Green Chile Cheeseburger, but not seriously. I wasn't sure what the green chiles would taste like, and what if they turned out to be gross? The Blue Ribbon Burger comes with bacon, port-braised onions and Gorgonzola cheese, along with LTOP. No, that's not a typo. You get thinly sliced red onions in addition to the port-braised onions. It feels weirdly generous of them, even though they're just onions, and all the fresh toppings are of a seemingly high quality. I was more ambivalent about the toppings specific to the Blue Ribbon Burger. I didn't dislike them, but I was less impressed by them than I would have expected. The bacon was good, but it was in crumbles and I think I would have liked it more if it were in thick, crispy strips. No Diddy. The cheese was either not flavorful enough or in not abundant enough quantity to be much of a factor. The onions, on the other hand, provided a nice flavor kick--less tart than I expected, more along the lines of the onions in a french onion soup. The fries were kinda whatever. They were good, being french fries and all, but not as gourmet as the menu would have you think. And they don't give you very many of them, if you get the regular serving. Weirdly, the regular serving doesn't cost much money, by Brandon-era standards, but the serving-size is decidedly skimpy. Why not just charge a normal amount and give you a normal quantity? Even the large won't exactly break the bank. I went with the small because I just wanted to see what they were like, for the sake of citizen food journalism. You're welcome.
