The bakery items are good but they messed up my birthday cake even though I went over my order. They were unreachable for a few days and did not return my call immediately. When I spoke to them, they would not make a replacement cake because the other cake had been partially eaten. I explained that I had people over and had to serve the cake because I had no other options and it was after hours for them. I would normally polish off my birthday cake in short order but didn't like the flavor they mistakenly gave me so the rest went to the trash which would normally be sacrilege for me. They tried to place some of the blame on me and were unreasonable in their solution. They said I had to look at it from a business perspective which made no sense because for the sake of a little more money to correct THEIR MISTAKE, they permanently lost a customer and anyone else I tell my unfortunate experience to. They don't seem to mind offending customers since they must be confident about themselves but they already closed down their Mt. Lebanon branch that I also patronized. In retrospect, I wish I would have gone somewhere else but that was the last cake I had with my dad before he died the year before and I was trying to acknowledge him by getting the same cake. There are other local family owned bakeries such as Dave's Terrace Bakery and Graham's Bakery which have delicious baked goods and are honorable and care about customers. I guess I should have cancelled my birthday until I could show them an uneaten cake in person days later (I took a picture which clearly showed the batter mistake but they didn't care). read more

Potomac Bakery has been on my "To Try" list for many years, and I stopped in while in Dormont this past weekend. I ordered a Vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing ($.70) and a mini heart-shaped glazed doughnut ($.40?). Clearly, the prices were great, and the baked goods tasted amazing as well. The glazed doughnut was perfect, and the Vanilla cupcake was just the right amount of sweet. Another highlight was the crazy inexpensive day-old bread! I wished I hadn't bought a fresh loaf the day before because there were a ton of options with unbeatable prices. This is a great bakery and worth a stop. read more

This bakery is.. How do you say.. The bomb!.. They have the best variety of cookies, donuts, pastries, and cakes I have encountered. I have ordered a cupcake cake for my sons baptism, that was absolutely amazing, and a couple other cakes that were very very good. My favorite thing there is a chocolate delight. Its made with chocolate cake, topped high with buttercream, then covered in chocolate ganache! Absolutely mouth watering! I also had a chance to try the apple dumpling. They might as well call it mount dumpling! The idea of it is like a Dutch apple pie. However, the crust is like any other delicious crust, but inside is something I've never seen! It's a cored whole apple filled with cinnamon and brown sugar glaze! It was by far one of the best apple deserts I've had in quite some time! The lady lock is very good as well. And the raisin stick is also very good. It a mix between a glazed donuts and raisin bread. The cherry stuffed cooky and raspberry heart were very tasty as well, both made from a sugar cookie like dough and then the cherry and raspberry glaze. Best bakery around! Thumbs up! I used to live in Germany and have been looking for a place like this since my return. It's been nearly a decade, but i found it. There are even cobblestones just around the corner. Have only been once since moving here--grabbed a couple donuts and brat rolls this morning (all fantastic, by the way)--and I see this becoming a staple of my morning routine. I imagine their wares as incentive to getting my little boy out the door in a timely fashion. He's going to love it. I've stopped by a total of 4 times to this bakery while attending to business in the area. I usually opt for their brownie bites- moist pieces of brownie with chocolate frosting at 0.50/piece to get some quarters for the street parking meter. I've tried their cupcakes and donuts, but nothing stood out to me. Their donuts are usually discounted by the end of the day. Service is a hit-or-miss. They do accept CC. read more

I just got a Pumpkin Explosion cake and it's delicious. It has intense pumpkin flavor with a moist crumb. The icing is fluffy & not too sweet and it's covered in white chocolate shavings. Next week this will replace our usual Thanksgiving pie!! read more

My first experience with this bakery today (June 9, 2012). Picked up a cake for my husband's 40th birthday. Decoration was nice and spelled correctly, cake was moist and nice, buttercream icing lovely and smooth, and overall a great job. The walk in space was a little small and they seemed busy today, but this place seems to know what they are doing. Incongruously, for no apparent reason, they were also selling a shelf full of bananas in plastic bags (um, OK?) and they sell bottled drinks and coffee too, but they force you to use styrofoam cups for the coffee-- I would suggest reusable mugs be allowed, or something else more environmentally sound. Counter help and girl on phone were polite but could speak up a little more. Their preprinted order slips indicate a space for "salesgirl" to sign, instead of "salesperson" so I'd suggest a change on that. Overall: Great and tasty and pretty, and suited our needs. read more

Rude and bizarre service. No true breakfast pastries, just donuts in the am and a full blown, vanilla filled cream puff. The donut/twist is so ordinary, I mistook it for a Dunkin donut. I ask the girl politely for a cup of water with ice. You'd think I requested a free ride on the mars shuttle. She stares at me. I guess they speak steel mill / blue collar a-nese here. So I repeat the simple question: "May I please get a cup of water with ice along with the donut?" Then she explains that they only sell bottled water and have no ice. At the register, they have the nasty East coast trend of enforcing a credit card minimum. I pay with cash and, you got it, she's mildly offended that I provide a $20. Weird weird place. It's ok. Nothing great. I read the reviews and was expecting to be wowed. Wasn't wowed. They had many of the old-fashioned things I was looking for but they weren't very good. The Bear Claw had a few chopped nuts sprinkled on the outside, but nothing inside-just a little, very little, cinnamon. The cannoli filling was way too sweet, couldn't taste any ricotta. The scones, cinnamon, blueberry, and a chocolate chip, were dry as dust. Scones aren't supposed to be dry. Also picked up a nut roll and a poppyseed roll. This bakery uses the same dough for nearly everything. The pastry dough on these rolls tasted exactly the same as what was used in the Bear Claw and another pastry I purchased of which I cannot remember the name. No, just no. These traditional rolls don't taste right with that dough. However, the nut filling was delicious. The poppyseed filling had gone rancid and therefore I had to throw out the entire, expensive, roll. Live, learn, and for Easter I'll make my own. ;) I purchased a few other things for comparison but they were so underwhelming that I can't even remember what they were. read more

Was heading to the cinema on Potomac and thought to grap some desserts from this store. This review is not about the quality or freshness of the products. The staff is friendly but the issue is with the owner/manager. I ordered 4 pieces of eclairs which totaled at $8.47. I pulled my debit card to pay and the girl at the cashier told me that there is a minimum of $10 for credit card purchase. I explained that I am using my debit card not a credit. The owner was standing next to the cashier and told her staff that she will not accept "cards" for less than $10. I told her that the sign (next to the register) clearly shows "credit cards" and not debit but she refused. Please do not push customers to buy MORE so you can satisfy your financial income. I hope this bakery learns to be more considerate to special events, especially when people are extra considerate to pre-pay in advance, not to mention to provide patronage to a small business. I mean, people buy cakes for special events! Not a surprise to a bakery I would think. Unfortunately this bakery set a poor example for such small businesses by their callus and inconsiderate handling of the occasion, ruining the whole event, double charging, taking away a special moment that can never be undone, and managing to undue all the considerate, pro-active action of the customer. We bought a cake here for my dad's 56th birthday and unfortunately it was quite a disappointment. The cake was very dry and did not seem fresh. Its like they premake the crusts or whatever you call them and use them as needed. The flavor was OK but they were not fresh and moist as one would reasonably expect. That said, they have very good frosting...excellent even. Velvet smooth, not overly sweet, and seeminly a touch of vanilla in there. Really wonderful frosting. Decorating was pretty well done also. Unfortunately, when buying for a special occasion and for someone special, one expects an excellent product(why else chose a bakery over a grocery store) and Potomac Bakery did not deliver. It was disappoibting and slightly embarassing even. Who knows, maybe we will give them another shot for the frosting. If they get the cake right in the future I will change my rating to a 5. read more

My grandma use to buy, sugar and chocolate chip cookies as well as Petit four from Patomac Bakery many many years ago. I decided to stop in and grab some out of curiosity to see if they were still just as good. All three blew me away. They tasted the exact same as they did 10 years ago! They have a wide variety of goodies to choose from, something to make everyone happy I'm sure. It seemed like every time I asked, "What is that?" It's unfortunate when you really try to like a place and it just let's you down. This place is on my way to work and I'm a sucker for cheap sweets so naturally I'm supposed to love this place. Now I've gotten a few good thing from here but more bad than good. For a while I was stopping there every so often before work for some sweet pick me ups. The older lady's are pretty crappy with you if your aren't purchasing in bulk (for parties) like your a waste of valuable time. Time spent doing what? I ask becAuse 90% ok what I'd get tasted old, stale and left out. So for a longgg time I boycotted this place after the last time I went nothing was good and the lady was terribly rude. Today tired of the same old song and dance of places to grub by work I remember I had some bruggers bagels cream cheese at work. But low behold I was bagleless. So I decided it's a bagel, how bad could they mess it up? The answer, so bad! Definitely a day or two old. If it isn't I'm shocked because it falls apart as I'm cutting it and tastes like old bread. It's all cheap but that's not reason to be terrible. All in all. Shoulda stuck to my guns and left it boycotted. Apparently, Potomac Bakery doesn't read their reviews...the cutout cookies are still over baked and way too dark. If they weren't over baked, they would be the same perfect cookies they used to be but alas...nope. $7+ is ridiculous for burnt cookies. There, I've said it again. Pastries are nice but I bought a cake for my sisters bridal shower and they PUT THE WORDING ON THE CAKE INCORRECTLY! it was a Saturday and "could not call a baker in to fix it so they could refund me the cake and just take this one, go somewhere else to buy a new cake, or try to fix the writing ourselves and just remove the word that was INCORRECT." I spent hours on the phone with the manager and she was not very helpful or empathetic to the situation. I then went to go pick up another cake for my sister for her husbands birthday and THE CAKE TOPPLED OVER IN THE BOX IN THEIR OWN FRIDGE! I asked the lady if this happens often and she goes nope your just "special". Being really rude about it. They patched the cake up and THEN showed me the cake and THERE WAS A WOODEN STAKE IN THE CAKE to "keep it together". I then said that there is a hole in the cake now and the counter lady said, "Just smooth the hole over with your finger a little bit." The counter girls are always rude. The iced sugar cookies were a smashing hit!!! Beautiful 3" decorated sugar cookies were delicious and beautifully decorated to perfection. I sent a photo of the shapes and pastel icing colors w/decorations that my daughter-in-law preferred for her baby shower. The cookies were ordered two weeks in advance and were ready for pickup at the requested time and were prepaid. They were carefully packed and easy to transport too. I called ahead to ask the bakery if it was possible to get my order ready since my husband, on a limited time schedule, was stopping in for the cookies. The boxes were ready and waiting for his arrival. The staff is well trained, polite and efficient. The service and cookies were go good that I placed another specialty sugar cookie order. Everyone loves them and has asked to have them as part of our Easter celebration. read more

Excellent bakery. I've ordered two cakes from here in the past as well (one I just decided to get when walking into the bakery on my dad's birthday) and one for my sister's baby shower - and the cakes did not disappoint. They were also beautifully decorated. We've gotten cookies and donuts from here and from the location on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon - never had anything that wasn't delicious!! Potomac location does accept credit/debit cards, but I believe you have to have a $10 minimum to use a card to pay; just something to note. I'm not sure if that policy is the same at the Mt. Lebanon store. Don't let that deter you!! read more

One of the best pastries I've had in my life I got here. I think it's called a "French bearclaw."

I have rediscovered this Bakery visiting it once a week for the past 2 months now. I have switch from the Starbucks pastry with runs over $3 to their most delicious bearclaw probably the best I've ever had for a dollar in possibly some change also you can skip Panera because the wheat bread sold by the Potomac Bakery is soft and delicious is much more delicious than even Panera it's time to drop the chain addiction and support this Bakery. Not to mention the donuts and donut holes yum yum yum. Get there early to get the best selection and don't forget to get a bag of donuts yesterday's donuts for an unbelievable cheap price like 2 or $3 a dozen. read more

My daughter recently brought home a cake from this bakery, and now we're HOOKED. I will probably not find one better

We were having a Gender Naming Party for our first baby and we were excited to share this moment with friends and family. When we went to pick up our cake we were extremely disappointed in the way the staff handled our order. The mother to be on picking up the cake found out the gender of the baby! Without her husband! This was supposed to be a surprise at the party but it was on the receipt. How terrible! They knew when we placed the order that this was supposed to be a secret. When confronted with their error they were dismissive, condescending, and there was no effort to compensate her for her pain in finding out the gender at the bakery. We have done wedding cakes here, and many special events over the years. Never again!! Potomac Bakery you should be ashamed. read more
