So my cousin and I were visiting one of her friends who lives right off the coast and across from the Polynesian cultural center. We decided to pick up a bite to eat and decided to go to Pounders restaurant. PERFECT choice, the place is huge but cozy @ the same time. All of the staff that we encountered were Amazing, super friendly and very welcoming. I ordered the Holy cow pizza and my cousin got some kind of chicken...the name of her dish Escapes me now but she said it was delicious. My pizza was prepared by Joye and it was off the chain, I'd never had a pizza with French fries on it but when I tell you that it was ONE of The best Pizzas that I Ever ate Trust Me. We had a party of 8 adults. I group ordered the loco moco, supposedly a specialty. 2 Hawaii pizzas, bacon cheeseburger burger and a Chinese salad. A fair amount of food, the restaurant had only a few customers, what was strange was the 35 minute wait time. None of the food was appealing, frozen burger patties over greasy fried food and doughy pizzas. The waiter was pleasant but very slow in the delivery. Food was great but service was ridiculous. We sat over an hour with only our drinks. We were the 3rd or 4th party in the restaurant that had just opened but we sat watching multiple parties who came well after us get their food, eat and leave and we still had no food. And no one came out to tell us what was wrong. I had to ask and got a "we had trouble with our screens in the back" answer. Then we were told they were short staffed cuz the BYU students were on holiday break. We finally got our food, and again it was great. But ultimately we got very little apology and had to ask for a discount which they did give. Prepare better for service needs when you know students will be gone! read more

Burgers were very good quality beef. We had the burger with spam and egg. It's like a plate lunch burger. Very good. Also the bacon burger. Poke with taro chips also very good. Loco moco was mediocre. Good beef, but needs more flavorful gravy, or maybe served with fried rice? Our server was very pleasant and friendly, but woefully inattentive. Slow to greet us, slow to check on our order, and impossible to flag down. Meals were slow to arrive, and we only received half our ticket. The other half arrived after we already finished the first half of our meals. One server dropped off a meal and immediately darted - totally ignoring us and our request to follow up on other missing items. This is TOTALLY UNAACEPTABLE so we had to flag down another waiter to get some service. He immediately apologized, describing that it was that food servers first day on the job and he was stressed. That means poor management if you ask me. Very slow meals also means the kitchen has problems - despite the fact that it was not a busy night. Stopped here for a quick bite while driving some guest around the island. Nice air conditioned restaurant, good service. I had the bacon cheeseburger and it was onolicious, others had the veggie pizza which was actually pretty tasty, the appetizer fried fish bites was good with the lilikoi dipping sauce, another had the huge Philly steak sandwich - it's huge portion enough to share. Lastly another had the garlic shrimp with white rice. For a simple meal for lunch this place is a good choice. No frills, just good food options that will take the hunger away. read more

Service is severely lacking especially after coming from the Ohana feel of the Polynesian Cultural Center. 1st time in the restaurant we were seated behind a wall, waited a long time to see a waitress who never came until a person bussing the other tables saw us and sent the waitress over to us finally. Felt like she forgot all about us, wasn't inviting and we felt like an obligation, not customers. 2nd time in the restaurant we were seated behind this wall again. Different server but same result. Our food came before we were even given silverware, they forgot to bring drinks until we were ready for the check, and just felt overall, like an annoyance than a paying customer. Got sent here for lunch by our tour. Tour guide called in our orders a stop or so ahead, and given how regularly tour operators use this place, well, hopefully adequate was the dream. In reality it was disappointing. Clearly our food, which came in to-go boxes (the standard here?), had been loaded on to a cart and then left to sit for a long time. Staff blamed our tour on coming in late, but given we watched our tour guide call in the order and then set off for lunch, I don't think that was it... The food, aside from being lukewarm verging on cold, was also much more like cafeteria in quality than what we'd come to expect from the wonderful plate lunches we'd gotten on our own most of the trip. We were hungry after a long morning excursion. We decided on this area and saw Pounders as one of the only full service restaurants surrounded by food trucks and food counters. We submitted our name and got a text that our table was ready sooner than the host's estimate. We sat on the covered patio which has ceiling fans which is cool in temperature. The menu is fairly diverse. They have burgers, sandwiches, entrees and pizza. I ordered a mango pizza that was delicious. Apparently mangoes belong on pizza. Service was subpar. We visited this place today at 12pm. We sat inside waiting for our friend for about 15 minutes to join us and the young girl greeter comes up to us and tell us that we had to eat outside because they had reservations for the entire day and she couldn't seat us. We sat and continued to wait for our friend when another older lady comes up to us and takes us to a booth. We asked her about reservations for the rest of the day that they had she said she didn't know anything about that. Finally ordered, the food was ok. My family wanted to have lunch here before we experienced the all-day "Exclusive Alii Luau" at the Polynesian Cultural Center. We were running late, so my nephew texted me the menu, and he ordered for us. My man's Lamb Shank was perfectly cooked - tender, buttery, and super tasty! It says "coconut mash" on the menu, but I thought it was just creamy mashed potatoes. It was good, but I didn't taste the coconut. Or maybe because I was more into my food. I ordered the best dish, the sunfish. When I ordered over the phone, I didn't know it was a WHOLE fish!!! Now that I'm looking at the menu, it says, "Crispy Whole Sunfish"! It was delectable with its fried skin, hot and sour sauce (more like a sweet tangy sauce), and I love how they added bok choy and rice. I wasn't a fan of the kids' Hawaiian Mango Pizza. The mangos weren't that great nor fresh (like it was from the freezer). There was supposed to be prosciutto in it? I don't think I saw or tasted it. Maybe I didn't get a slice with it. I'm not sure if the kids enjoyed it. There were a lot of leftovers. We had two desserts - Creme Brulee and my auntie gave us a Mango Cheesecake from the bakery. The Creme Brulee was not baked enough. It was still creamy, not jiggly. At least they torched it right, and the brittle crust was good. The Mango Cheesecake was outstandingly flawless - a great balance between sweet and tart. I realize that Pounders is more of a 'touristy' restaurant (being located in the Polynesian Cultural Center) but I used to actually drive out there because I really liked their food. Recently however, the GF and I took a drive out there and was so disappointed. The menu had been ridiculously downsized and there was such an odd ambience to the place. As for the menu, you still had your basic burgers, pizzas, and salads but that was it! It was nothing like before where you had a pretty extensive menu with a creative local farm to table kind of flair that they used to offer. The waitress seemed like she was new so her take on the menu was that 'she thinks they got less stuff because they got a new chef'. Well Mr. NewChef ... your menu has left me wanting. SOOOOOOOO disappointing!! Overall, the food was okaaaay I suppose. I opted for the 'Grahamburger' and my GF had their 'Hawaiian Mango Pizza'. The only element of my burger that stood out was that it came with Brie cheese. As for the pizza, I have a rule ... I don't eat pizzas which contain fruit so I honestly couldn't give you a first hand opinion. Lol My GF said it was alright so we'll leave it at that. So all in all, MEH ... our meal ended with a 'nothing special but ok' rating. Side note: Regarding the strange ambiance ... the restaurant was pretty empty and there seemed to be a lot of college aged servers more or less just standing around (I'm assuming they were students from BYU). The staff seemed generally disinterested and more cordial than friendly. Every so often, a tourist couple would wander in for a bite. There were a few busses dropping off loads of tourists but they seemed content wandering around the Hukilau Marketplace. For whatever reason, everyone seemed to be speaking in hushed tones. I almost felt like i was eating in a library! I just felt really awkward the entire time I was in there for whatever reason. To sum things up, 10 minutes into my time there, all I kept thinking was 'Well ... that's the last time I'm driving all the way out here to eat' So sad ... hopefully they get another chef and bring things back closer to their original menu but I'm not holding my breath. She was kind enough to ask for allergies and made sure my food did not have the food I am not comfortable with.
