I can't explain how happy I am that I found Preferred Automotive. My BMW broke down so after reading the reviews I towed it there. I had some work that I had been putting off so I had them fox it all. Belt and pulley assembly, window regulator, ABS sensor, temp sensor. They called me along the way keeping me informed. When the car was ready they called right away. They also had the car cleaned for me. The biggest thing to me was that I never once had to call them for an update like all the other shops or dealerships I have dealt with. I bought a commuter that was in pretty poor shape, so I thought I'd have Preferred Automotive take a look. They offer a courtesy shuttle, which is very convenient. The shop is very clean, and the staff is courteous and helpful. They don't try to push you into anything, which is nice. They explain what is going on in great deal and give you several options so you can make the final decision on what they do and when they do it. So far, I've had them do my brakes and some steering / suspension work and in each case their diagnosis was accurate and there was a noticeable difference in how the car performed after the fact. They were able to complete each service the same day it was scheduled as well. I priced them against several other shops in town, and their prices are in the same ballpark as everywhere else. The courtesy shuttle, friendly staff and low pressure environment is icing on the cake in my book! I'll definitely continue using them to service my vehicle. read more

I took my car here for a tune-up. I am new to Gilroy and had no idea where to go. I looked up preferred on the internet, and the reviews were very good, so I decided to give it a try... Well, I am so glad I did! Sarah was excellent. Not only did she hip me to the best places to go in Gilroy, she had the best customer services skills. The tune-up was great also. They didn't try to rip me off or sell me on their services which I really appreciate. They let me know what I needed, but didn't tell me I have to do it this minute or I will be sorry. The auto business sometimes gets a bad rap because people try to swindle you, overcharge you, or simply sell services you may not need... preferred did none of that. They are AWESOME! This shop is a well oiled machine. I was referred here by my previous mechanic when I moved to this area and I was pretty sad having to switch because I loved my previous shop but after my first experience here I am completely satisfied with the switch. I had my car diagnosed, fixed and back on the road by noon the next day for a very reasonable price. They fixed what was wrong, didn't try to pad the bill and the service was great; I even got a free keurig cup of coffee when I picked my car up. A week later the car is still running smooth and the check engine light is off. Dave the owner was very patient with me as I tend to ask a lot of questions and explained what was wrong very thoroughly and in a way that I could understand. I highly recommend this place! When I was coming back from the Bay Area to Monterey on Monday I noticed that my car was stalling as the battery and engine light came on. So I called triple A to have it towed somewhere and they recommended this shop and as I read good reviews about it I said ok fine. So I take it in and Amanda gives me an estimate that it will be $153 for it so I said ok not bad. But then I get a call from Sarah the manager telling me the diagnostic and that it will cost more. I am a student and can't afford $1100 dollars and I just got lied to from them. Not only was I lied to about the price I'm a student and so before Sarah spoke with my father I called her back and clarified with her that it will be the actual price I asked if she needed my parents contact information and names and in a condescending tone of voice with me when she said to me they can call her. This Happened late last year but everyone should know. It's not what I expected from a shop that recognized they failed. I was charged $150 + $550 for an inspection/estimate plus repair of a clear coolant leak noticeable for the yellow color liquid dropped once the car was parked. My issue is that the car left the shop much worse than it when in. This minor leak turned into a dangerously serious ordeal, I started carrying coolant container to fill the tank ever 25 miles. Once I took the car back to Preferred Automotive they wanted additional $1100 to fix it. Once I complaint they wanted to reduce that to $750 as a discount for the initial ill repairs. I had a baby soon to be born and in this month or so process I had to sell the car at a huge loss and buy something safe. read more

I took my Honda minivan to Preferred Auto for a 3rd opinion regarding the ding and knocking sounds coming from the motor. 2 other shops including Ray's Transmission and Wheelworks said the transmission was on its final life span. Preferred Auto recommended the $100+ diagnostic to find the problem. The gal (Sally) on the front desk said I had to pay the $100+ for the diagnostic and she sold me hard that every shop charges for a diagnostic. I told her that 2 other mechanics recommended a new transmission. She was adamant to go with the diagnosis because she said "it may not be the transmission, we have to confirm for ourselves." I hesitantly agreed because I had a glimmer of hope that the other 2 mechanics were wrong. The lady (Sally?) said that my minivan needed a fresh transmission oil change with the Honda recommended transmission oil (Special oil for Honda automobiles) and that my problem could be solved. I told her I wanted a quote for a new transmission. She said she could not give me a quote until she changed the transmission oil. I conveyed to her that the transmission oil was changed 1 month prior. She said the transmission would be fine and that the transmission oil change would lengthen the life of the transmission. However, she also stated that Preferred Auto could not gauge or estimate the life of the transmission. At this point I was frustrated because I needed to get the minivan to my wife for our family/kids weekend activities. She said the transmission would be fine and that the transmission oil change would lengthen the life of the transmission. So I agreed because a a new or rebuilt transmission costs $2000 to $4500 and I would save thousands of dollars. I was hopeful but skeptical. However, Preferred Auto is suppose to have 'expert mechanics' who help customers make the best decisions for the safety of their families/autos. Sally, charged me over $130 for the transmission oil change. That same evening and night my minivan drove smooth and I said to myself "wow, Preferred Auto did the right thing and thought the other two mechanics from Rays Transmission and Wheelworks were selling me a bill of goods at $3000 to $4000 for a new transmission.. The next day on Saturday, with my family in tow going north on 101 near Hollister, the transmission failed. I was traveling at 65 MPH and lost total control of the power in the minivan. This was scary for all of us. However, I pressed the hazard lights and was lucky enough that the momentum of 65MPH allowed me to turn into the only turn off on 101 going North, an RV station. BTW our minivan was going uphill on 101 North bound. My heart rate was elevated and as soon as I turned off into the RV place, my family and I pushed the minivan under a shady tree. I called Preferred Auto several times, but nobody answered. After 3 hours of waiting for an available tow truck, the minivan was towed to Lightning Auto on Railroad in Gilroy, CA. Miguel, the owner, said he could smell the burning oil either from the engine or transmission. He said the smell was very strong "like burning tires" and that most likely something is broken in the engine or there is an oil leak. Miguel asked me to give him 2 days since he has a ton of cars ahead of mine. He also does not charge a diagnostic fee. His diagnostic service is FREE!!!!! So I left the minivan at his shop. He called me the next day and said the transmission needed to be replaced. He also said there were other issues and asked me to see me in his shop. He showed me broken or warn out parts on the axle as well as other problematic areas. Again, Preferred Auto missed all the problems and the most obvious, that the transmission was done. rebuilt my tranny and the minivan runs smooth. Price was right $2,400. He also fixed a lot of other issues that Preferred Auto missed. I feel that Preferred Auto seems to try to do more services than are needed. I do not recommend them. read more

I was selling a Mercedes and the buyer (I had a deposit on the vehicle) chose Preferred Automotive to do an independent inspection. I had zero issue with any independent inspection as 100% of the maintenance was performed by the selling Mercedes dealer (Mercedes of Monterey), and we were the original owner, and did all service on schedule. The mechanic during inspection made his report, and noted a issue which was major, and as such, the buyer backed out. As this M-B was meticulously maintained (and was only 4 years old with low mileage), I freaked out and brought the vehicle back to Mercedes of Monterey (with the report in hand). The Mercedes dealer went through with a fine tooth comb, and found everything to be perfect and to Mercedes specification, and as such, the report was completely wrong. By this time, the buyer had moved on to another vehicle, and the sale was lost. (It eventually sold, 9 weeks later and for $1500 less) As an independent business owner myself, I reached out to the owner with two phone calls, and one email. Neither were answered. I simply wanted to have a discussion, and share the Mercedes dealer report to compare with theirs and maybe educate their technician so they would not have this happen again to someone as even keel as myself. While this may be an isolated incident, suffice to say, my dealings were as such that I could never, and would never refer them to anyone, or take my vehicle there. read more

These people lied to me to my face. My car stalled on the freeway after the oil light briefly flashed on a couple times. AAA's towing company suggested having my car towed to this place, and since the yelp reviews are good I went ahead and did that. Their diagnosis was that my car's engine was totally ruined. Obviously that was terrible news, and I had a hard time believing it because I think my car's computer initiated the stall as a way of protecting the engine from getting damaged. So I told them it would make me feel better if they added some oil and tried to start my car again just to see if that made a difference. They refused, explaining that the issue had nothing to do with oil levels and that my levels were completely fine. That's the moment I knew they were screwing with me... I wouldn't have had this issue AT ALL if my oil was fine. Anyway, I told them I'd rather trade it in than pay for the repair so they charged me $115 for the diagnostic ($140 - $25 yelp discount). Then I drove it off their lot and checked the oil myself... something I didn't know how to do before that moment :) Oil was COMPLETELY empty. Like, literally nothing showed up on the stick so I texted a picture of it to my Dad to make sure I hadn't done it wrong. I added 4 quarts of oil, took it to a dealership, and the mechanic there told me the oil looked great except it was a quart low. So, I mean, that's how empty the oil was. read more

I had previously taken it to some other shops to see if they could figure out what the problem was but nobody was able to tell me . Finally I decided to take my car here and within 1 hour, David called me and told me they had found the issue and what the cost was to repair it.
