Gentle giants! My first impression of Gerry was that he was professional and consistent via our initial phone calls and texts. Then my first physical impression of Gerry and his son upon their arrival was their stature. Big strong dudes--which meant I knew they wouldn't have a problem moving the single piece of furniture we had on the floor of the home we just purchased. (They happily did it.) But it was immediately obvious how kind, polite and gentle they were. For example, Gerry's son asked my permission before filling a small tank with water; he does not assume what a home owner is ok or not ok with. I was nearby during the job, so Gerry took the liberty of proactively pointing things out to me and offering suggestions for ways I could keep my floors looking good myself, as he noticed based on what I was doing while he was working that was I am the DYI type. No cost advice, and enjoyable conversation! The job was completely in a timely manner, and my floor (four different surface types!) looks and feels terrific. Just had a very disappointing experience trying to get a bid. I work in the interior design / renovation industry so I do a lot of work getting bids for both my home and my clients' homes as well. I reached out to Preferred after receiving what I thought was a high bid from another company. I was thrilled when he said he could come by same day. He said it would be between 4 and 430. We had a third company coming a little before 5 today to give us another quote so it would have been perfect timing. Preferred texted me at 430 that he would not be here until almost 5 PM. This ran in to the time of the other contractor was here. I politely texted him to let him know that we had someone else we were meeting with and to please hang out for 5 minutes while we wrapped up. In the ensuing conversation I was called rude and disrepectful and he lambasted accusations against me in statements that began "people like you..." etc etc. Long story short was he was 25 mins outside of the time frame we had originally agreed upon over the phone. It is not my fault he showed up at that time. Funniest part of it is he was one of the lowers quotes over the phone and had he just had a smaller ego and less of a chip on his shoulder he very well could have made the sale today and made a repeat customer for many years to come. read more

Gerry did a terrific job cleaning my carpet, wood floor, and tile. I hoped he could make the tile go from horrible to acceptable, as we're about to list our house. I couldn't believe it when he was finished and it looked like new. He also made two bedrooms with hardwood floors look as good as new. Gerry really knows what he's doing and takes pride in his work. His background as a Navy Chief showed through in other ways. We had to start much earlier than originally planned, 7am instead of 10, because the were closing our street for re-surfacing for the afternoon. Gerry called to let me know there was a wreck on the freeway and he was running late. However he showed up at about 7:05, which let me know how high a priority he placed on punctuality. Even though the GPS told him to expect a 45 minute drive to my house, Gerry allowed 1 hour, so in spite of the traffic, he was within 5 minutes of the scheduled time AND called to give me a heads up. We've just closed escrow on an older '72 home and the prior tenants, who are the dirtiest renters ever BTW, had left the hardwood floors dirty, scratched up, and dull. On top of that, for the past month, we've had our fireplace replaced, stairs redone, and painters come in. So, the floors have taken a real beating and were coated in a thick layer of drywall and dirt and dust. So I found Gerry on Yelp and asked him to come by, clean the hardwood and seal it in preparation for our move-in. We've got a 3 and 4-year-old, so I didn't want any weird chemicals on the floors, but we did want a family-tolerant floor, as much as hardwood can be. Firstly, he didn't wear booties to come clean my floors and tracked all this dirt and crud onto my travertine. Perhaps from his previous job. Then he sprayed my wood floors with Folex, a carpet spray before he buffed it. I don't know about it's effectiveness, but it kind of left a coating on the floors. The grout in our tile floors had darkened noticeably over a few years, even though they get a weekly mopping. I tried cleaning the grout myself with brushes a few times, but couldn't get it to go back to its original color. Wow, this guy is unbelievably bad. Gave me an estimate online, changed prices 3 times downward. Walks in no mask I ask him to put one on, looks around and says I can only clean the floor for $150. Starts saying he will lose money and cannot polish the floor when he has already promised to polish the floor in his estimate. Gets his phone out and looks up the online conversation but doesn't scroll down far enough where he promises to polish the floor for the agreed price. He then starts screaming at me and calling me crazy. I told him to leave, don't use this guy he is bad news and will change prices when he arrives. He is not a nice man. read more

Context: My wife and I purchased a new home in which I did a thorough deep cleaning, including vacuuming and mopping of the floors. After all of my hard work I noticed my feet were still dirty (we are a shoe free house hold and have a baby who has begun crawling everywhere and anywhere).
