Prey was a vibe. I've been following them on Instagram for several months and thirsting over all of the delicious plates and how fun it looked, so I was ecstatic when the plan to visit came to fruition. We went for Sunday brunch. I made reservations at a high table but the humidity was beating us like we stole something lol so we asked if we could move inside. The hostess was incredibly accommodating and informed us that there was an hour limit on tables but we could sit at the bar as another option. We chose the bar without hesitation. The chairs at the bar were plush and comfortable. The bartender was Eric and he was very attentive and friendly. He was only bartender the entire time we were there but he killed it. He held conversations and got drinks out in what looked like a timely manner. Kudos to him. The music was fantastic from the time we walked in until the time we left. Everyone was friendly and no one rushed us, even though they were turning tables over quickly. What I got is below. I will absolutely be returning for brunch and to try the dinner menu. -Watermelon Breeze. It was delicious. The menu description made me think it was an adult watermelon lemonade, but it didn't give me lemonade vibes. I tasted citrus though. Whatever it was, Eric did the dang thing when he put that together. If I wasn't driving, I would've had a second. -Catfish and grits. It was PHENOMENAL. I had reservations when the runner sat the plate in front of me, because the grits looked solid and the entire plate looked dry, but looks can be and we're absolutely deceiving. The grits were so perfectly seasoned (and not just with salt and pepper) and nowhere near as solid as they looked. The catfish was fried hard (iykyk) and also seasoned to perfection. Topping off the dish was a crawfish and andouille etouffee sauce that made me want to jump out of my seat and start shouting. It was Sunday, after all. That meal was no doubt prepared by blessed hands. The anointing of the Lord was present and accounted for in the kitchen because everything was blessed and highly flavored (shout-out to Timmy for this phrase!). But you have to give me something to work with. The menu is catered to Cajun and cream on almost every dish and appetizer. Not a place for those who don't eat dairy for sure. Our dinner experience was good. The dining room is small, but along with the decor, lighting and window views, it offers a beautiful intimate environment...perfect for date night. Started off with me making reservations for 4 and then about 3 days before hand emailing and asking can I change it 5. Was told no problem. Upon arriving early, (30 minutes) I was told it only said 4. I informed hostess I was told it could be changed and that since we were early we could wait for the rest of the party (there were 2 of us at the time). After a 10 minute wait she said she could sit us early. As we sat, our waitress  Gabbi  tells us that there was a $300 minimum at THIS table (it sat 6 to 8 people) and I was caught off guard seeing that it didn't state that when making reservation but perhaps it was because I originally made it for 4. We were also told we could only use 1 Card to pay bill. Which  wasn't a problem. As we waited  for rest of party,  2 drinks were ordered and an appetizer of deviled eggs. It took almost 45 minutes for the 4 small deviled eggs to come out. The rest of our party had arrived during that time and placed drink orders and we all placed food orders by 8:50 pm. It took on average 20 minutes for the drinks to arrive. And another 30 minutes for the food to start coming out. By now it was around 9:45. Ordering 2nd round of drinks took another 20 to 30  or so minutes. As we were finishing up, we were then told that we had to hurry up because our 2 hour limit was up and the next party was waiting on the that table. Giving the fact that it took for ever for our food and drinks to arrive, we wanted to know at what point did the clock start because had we had our food and drinks in a timely matter, we wouldn't have had to be rushed. I had just received my 2nd drink and was not about to "down" it because of their slow service. Gabbi then gets an attitude and walks off. A manager comes over who listened to us but did nothing. We were not asking for any type of compensation. Just making him aware  that the speed of our food was slow and to be told we had to get up was absurd. When we received the bill, Gabbi already included her tip (for a table of 5) and then all of a sudden we could use up to 3 cards but this was told to us after some started to cash app or zelle me their portions of the bill because we went off of what she first told us. The food was just ok and adding to it the subpar service is enough to make me not want to return. We really try and support Black owned businesses but this is just another to disappoint us because of simple things like service and lack of communication. Found this spot using Tiktok. From the videos it seemed like a very cute and trendy spot. It is trendy, but the interior design is incredibly cheap and not particularly well put together. Moving on... I always judge the bar, bar tender, and cocktails by what kind of ice they use for an Old Fashioned. Unfortunately, not only did they used cubed ice, it was heavy on the whiskey. This isn't bad when your simple syrup and bitter ratio matches. Tasted more like a bad Manhattan. Very glad I got the cheapest drink, because I would have been very angry to have paid $18+ for a poorly mixed drink. The crawfish fondue was TASTY AF. Would definitely get that again. However the entrees left a lot to be desired and were actually plated poorly. Way too much salt in the creamed spinach and an interesting combination of seasonings as well. I came here for brunch with a friend on a Saturday afternoon. Keep in mind they just recently started brunch service. I stalked their Instagram so I was excited to try this restaurant plus its BLACK OWNED! My girlfriend and I arrive and the host is nowhere to be found. After waiting a few minutes I literally had to walk over to the bar area and grab her attention. Prey is MUCH smaller than what it appears to be in the pictures, however there is outside seating available as well.. After being seated we scan the qr code and download the brunch menu. There's only about 5 items to choose from. Again they just started doing brunch service so that's understandable. We also ordered some cocktails which costs between $15-$20 per drink. There appeared to be only 2 servers working the whole restaurant which made service really slow. It took awhile to receive our drinks and mines was definitely not worth the wait, My friend had the peach Margarita which was actually good but too sweet for me. I ordered the pound cake "French toast" which was $22 and definitely not worth the price point. It's basically 3 small pieces of pound cake made to mimic the look of French toast. Please don't order this thinking it's going to taste like French toast it absolutely is just plain old pound cake lol the crab cake hash was actually pretty tasty but nothing special. Overall I think they need to rework the brunch menu and work on their service, especially because they charge you an automatic 18% gratuity fee.. Very nice environment and ambiance for a dinner on a Sunday evening. However, the place seems to be cheaply put together, I dislike the restroom area that only had two sinks for both male and female. The service was "ok," our waitress was young and inexperienced. She took long periods of time to check on us and didn't know what was on the menu unless she looked. We started with deviled eggs which were tasty but pricey for 2 eggs; additionally the shrimp were not large at all and seemed to be cut in half. For my entree I ordered the Thai salmon and the fish was great but not for $40. The combination of flavors were amazing and I was actually given a large piece of salmon so that and the rice filled me. My boyfriend ordered the oxtail empanadas and they were filled with cheese and oxtails and I thought they great. He also ordered a side of mac and cheese which was $14. If you look at the picture, it could have been more Mac and cheese or added a meat for $14. Overall, it's always nice to experience new places. I've been wanting to try Prey since it opened and I enjoyed myself last night. I booked a reservation through Open Table a week prior, but for some reason when we showed up it wasn't there. Fortunately, the manager was very accommodating and still sat my friend and I after I showed my reservation confirmation. Parking: you can valet in front or use the parking garage at Whole Foods. I would park close to the elevator (not escalator) towards the back wall and come to the first floor and then walk over. Location: prey is located on the second floor. Use the escalator to come up. Inside: the restaurant is beautiful but very small. They have tables outside if you prefer. They play old school 90s music. Dim lighting. Drinks: we both had the honeysuckle drink and it was not good. Other reviews on here loved it but I would not get it again Food: the shrimp fondue is AMAZING! It was the best thing we had. I had the oxtail surf and turf and my friend had the lamb chops. Her lamb chops were small, too spicy, and not seasoned well. They were on a bed of white rice. Don't recommend. My oxtail surf and turf looked better than it tasted. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't get it again. We also had a shareable side of truffle mash. Don't recommend. No flavor. Pictures: you will get beautiful pics here, I know everyone wants to take pics. So that is a plus. Dress code: there is a dress code enforced. Don't come looking raggedy or they will turn you away. There's a sign when you walk in that tells you what is allowed/not allowed. Staff: the staff is very friendly. Manager went above and beyond. Our waitress was cool. So this is my second time coming to prey since last year and I must say a big improvement. The service is great. Our server was very helpful and friendly. We didn't have to wait long to be seated. The only thing I don't like is the seating in the middle. People walking behind you and to the side of you and the tables aren't very big. The food was amazing. I really wanted to love this experience as we were celebrating a wife to be & wanted to give our dollars to a Black owned business, but unfortunately I did not. Everything here just fell short, from the strict reservation rules/dress code, to the ridiculously over priced food. Most items on the menu you can get from pappadeux for half the price and twice as much food. I paid nearly $40 for a fillet of cat fish with some bell peppers, when the menu said it came on a bed of creamy spinach. My friend actually ended up getting sick from the lamb chops. Just really bad. The atmosphere is probably the best part. Everyone looked like they were having a great time and are so happy to be there but don't be fooled. The menu is extremely limited; we ordered Brussels sprouts to share because we are vegetarian and had basically no other options. The Brussels sprouts were like $15 and the portion size was laughably small. This would be fine if this was a fine dining restaurant or maybe if at least the food was good, but it wasn't. It was so bland and unseasoned, I don't even think there was salt or pepper added. I also saw the table beside me get served a plate that looked so sloppy and unappetizing that I audibly gasped. The food needs to either be improved or the prices need to come down, because the quality and cost are completely mismatched. Honestly I would come back though because it's just so pretty and the vibe is so good in there. It was pretty full on a Wednesday at 8 and it attracts a really nice crowd.
