I have heard about the progress grill for years, and we finally went to it, first impressions of the inside is a 1970s godfather movie, rear clean but very dated, while everything seemed nice they use old 1970 diner chairs. But I came here for the food, they are known for their crab cakes and seafood, I ordered a strip steak with a lobster and my wife ordered a Seafood plate with king crab legs. You get 2sides with every meal, I got a baked potato which mine was pretty small and a salad which was good. On arrival my wife's meal was wrong she had received a lobster instead of the crab legs, it was quickly replaced, but you can tell the waitress was upset because it was her faught and she would have to pay for the lobster. My steak came out great, medium well, and the lobster was large and sweat. The bread seemed fresh and warm. The food was pretty much perfect, while the waitress was average she wasn't great and for a $175 meal I expected more, it seemed she was wanting us gone so she could go home, so a average waitress and a dated interior gives the Progress Grill 4 stars, and I will be back. read more

This place had me worried since the reviews were either really good or really bad. I have to say I enjoyed this place! I decided to go here for my wedding anniversary with my husband. Good thing we called ahead for reservations because this place was packed! The building didn't look very big from the outside but when we pulled around back and saw how much parking, I was very surprised. Once we got inside and climbed 2 stair cases (this is a lot for a pregnant lady like me) we were seated right away. We were seated in the back corner. It was a little tight but they were squeezing as many tables in as possible. The place was packed. I was a little nervous coming here because I heard it can be pricy. I checked the menu online and there were no prices. More worry set in. Meals were around mid to high $20. Not too bad for a special occasion. My husband ordered the prime rib and I got crab cakes. Our waitress was very nice by explaining the 3 different types of crab cakes they have on the menu. We were later told that the prime rib was out and more wouldn't be ready for another hour. Disappointed, my husband ordered a rib eye. He was happy with the taste, flavor and size but had his heart set on the prime rib. I loved my crab cakes! It was large and very filling. TLDR: Do not visit. They served me an old precooked steak and service was slow. I thought I'd give this place a try because the reviews on Google were nice. I ordered the TBone steak medium rare. My waiter told me there was none left but he would get me a ribeye for the same price. I said great. It came with mushrooms and onions on top. I asked for it on the side. First came bread & butter which was the same as the ones at a local super market. I ordered a bottle of Merlot for $32? I think. Anyways, it was way over priced. Then came my food. Food came out in 5 minutes. They brought me a dry well done tbone steak w mushrooms and onions on top. Which was not what was not what was agreed upon. Furthermore, the steak was room temperature to the touch with artificial grill marks on it. If you go to any legit steak house or cook steal yourself you know to let the steak rest for 15minutes before serving because the high heat from the grill causes the steak toughen up and release it's juices. The 15min let's the steak loosen up and reabsorb the juice/flavors. So all this makes me believe that they gave me a old tbone steak that someone else brought back and was sitting on the counter. After I was done I had to wait another 15minutes for the check. I got so frustrated that I got up and had to ask 2 separate times for the waiter to bring me my check. read more

Prime rib and rib eye are delicious and cooked perfectly. I don't eat crab but family members do and swear the crab cakes are the best around. Good wait staff, experienced and professional. Place could use a little facelift, maybe new carpeting, but overall you won't be disappointed in the food. read more

In honor of my Mom, who LOVED Prime Rib, I hosted a Celebration of Life Lunch at Progress Grill following her Homegoing service next door. Mary was excellent to work with on all of the arrangements. The servers were very attentive and always nearby throughout the 2.5hr we spent in the private dining room. There were about 35 of us in total, a perfect size for the space. I ordered the French Onion Soup, Pork Chops and also tried the Crab Cakes. Soup was tasty. Both entree items were delicious. Pork Chops were extremely juicy, even at medium-well temp. Crab Cakes were packed with crab and very little filler, as they should be. I greatly enjoyed my first ever visit to the Progress Grill and will definitely be back. Excellent tender delmonico, tasty haddock with probably the best tartar sauce I've had in my life (lots of flavor vs relish in mayo), good rolls, lovely butter, powerful cocktails, helpful and friendly staff. We were very pleased and far too full to try desserts. Quieter but warm & comfortable atmosphere. Yes a bit more pricey on some things, but well worth it. They were very accommodating for a party of 12 people. There was only one small mishap with the steak not being cooked well enough for one person. Overall excellent services. The place is stuck in the 70's so the gratuity is calculated differently. I dine here occasionally with friends, but keep forgetting to review, so here goes... We always sit at the bar and get great, attentive service from Dori when she's working. There is a TV where you can keep your eye on whatever game is tuned in on the channel. No background music that I recall in the dining room, but if there was, it should be Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, because this place has that kind of low light, warm, leather banquette, old school vibe to it! Started off with an Oysters Rockefeller appetizer. Four large oysters were delivered, and while they weren't bad, I can't say that they were the best I've ever had. My main entrée was broiled Boston Scrod, with sides of Harvard Beets and Coleslaw. OMG! I've never had Boston Scrod before, but I will say it was out of this world. Perfectly broiled with buttery bread crumbs on top. I love Harvard Beets (I know I'm weird) and they were delicious, as was the coleslaw. The portion size was large and I did take some home in a doggie bag. One thing we were told at this visit was they do not have any draft beer - everything is bottled. No biggie for me since I was drinking wonderful espresso martinis topped with crème fraiche. If you are planning to come for dinner on a Saturday night, make your reservation early. We called and could only be seated at 8pm or after. Not a big deal for us - but could be for some. I have always disliked this place as a kid. It was stuffy and over just old. I hadn't been in for a couple of years and the interior is still the exact same. The place can get loud and the decor is very outdated. Overall it is just an older crowd. The drink prices are insane. I admittedly cheap, but I can't justify their prices. The food prices are ok in my opinion. Although, I used to dislike this place, I've never had a bad meal here. I got the grouper, but the crab cakes are always a hit. I don't recommend the Brussel sprouts as a side- they are the steamed kind every kid hates. ( I was hoping they would be the new take on them - via roasting or something) Our total for 3 people came to $75. No alcohol, just food. Talk about looks being deceiving ... I was pleasantly surprised at the inside as I thought the outside looked a little diner-ish. First thought is that service was impeccable with a pretty large waitstaff. Dress code on patrons ranged from casual to one couple who were definitely dressed up. Place is dimly lit which could be construed as romantic. The salads were good, both the Greek and the garden. The bleu cheese dressing was yummy and the bread was good (though it would be better if it was warmer). The mozarella sticks were average. I had the Porterhouse which was gigantic and tasty. I generally like a better marbled steak but this was definitely good and worth the $22 as it came with salad and side (baked potato in my case). My family members had the seafood a la chemise, crab cakes and rack of lamb and all commented favorably with the possible exception of the seafood dish as it was very rich. But I had a bite and it was good ... kind of like a seafood pot pie in a puff pastry and yes, it was definitely rich. All in all, an upscale place for dinner. Since I was with family for an early dinner and they were driving back to NJ, we didn't have drinks. But I have heard they make a great martini here which I will try the next time. Ok, so it's the best prime rib my husband has had in his life...but I don't eat meat, so from Pescetarian's point of view this place is not all it's talked up to be. It's a very old building with a super cool retro sign out front, but the inside reminds me of what a fancy restaurant would look like in the eighties. I wasn't feeling the mauve and cheesy floral patterns. They keep the inside unnecessarily dark, one assumes it is so their patrons cannot see the ridiculous prices. I had the seafood casserole in phyllo ($20), which sounded delicious, but when I bit into it the shrimp was still cold and the rest of the seafood tasted as if it had spoiled. I was so hungry and disappointed, I told the waitress and she brought me a free dessert ($5). So initially I ended up spending $15 for something I didn't eat. Interesting location, from the neighborhood and looking from the outside it is not what you would expect. Once inside you will be pleased to find fine dining and great service. The menu is extensive with wonderful seafood and steaks. All of the appetizers and sides were wonderful. I struggled to choose between the halibut or rib eye, I picked the halibut and was not disappointed. Very nice portions and perfectly cooked. Just the right amount of seasoning, not overly salted. While prices are a little step this is fine dining and I did find the value with the quality, serving size and excellent service. We moved to Florida ten years ago, mainly because we needed to take care of my spouse's mom. She passed away shortly after. I am writing this review because restaurants can't compare to the excellent food we always had at the Progress Grill. If we try a restaurant and like it down here, they are gone maybe two years later. My plan is to work on my spouse to go back to Pa. Besides, the water is unsafe down here, they are overbuilding houses and can't supply water for all, septic systems are horrible, and the over developement is killing the natural beauty and wild life down here. I have always had high expectations about this place. When I finally arrived, the atmosphere upheld those expectations. It's a very elegant, upscale dining facility. They even play classical music as opposed to a standard radio station; a nice touch in my book. Now along with the heightened sense of fine dining, I also had some speculations about their menu. I expected a range of higher-end cuisine accompanied by heftier price tags. This revealed itself to be true the instant I cracked the menu. The average price per plate here is about $20-25, but they go much higher than that; unfortunately, not much lower. My friend and I scoured the menu until we settled on the most unique, reasonably priced items we could find. We ended up settling on seafood, but if I had the chance to do it again I would like to try a steak here. I have a feeling it would be very well prepared. The food we did order was good. It wasn't anything I would order again, but I was content and full at the end of the meal. I believe this place is a little too salty for what it boils down to. I've been to the Progress Grill many times over the last 40 years. I'm not the type of person to leave reviews if i have a good experience I return if I have a bad experience I don't but this time I felt I had to leave my first ever review. The food and drinks were good and the other customers were charming....but the waitress (a much older lady her service was nothing special and treated my guests who spoke French as if they were stupid.... ) NOT so much that if I could give less than 1 star I would. I was my wife and 3 other women 2 from Cameroon, 1 from Paris France. Dinner went well until the end when I received the check $315.00. Once again I had no problem with the bill it was how it was presented. When she gave me the check she reviewed it and said quietly "I didn't add on 20% tip.". I believe in tipping as I see fit. If it's on the restaurants policy to let you know tips are added in I have no problem this was not the case. I tipped $35. and change. When she came back to the table and seen her tip she proceeded in loudly saying that 20% is standard for good service unless I didn't think her service wasn't good enough for that and she would give me a minute in case I wanted to reconsider. I'm not sure whether she thought I didn't look the type to go to a nice restaurant or not. I am a 60 year old African American man who's been in business for over 30 years and have traveled extensively in the world and eaten at some of the best places (shout out to the Hoja Santa in Barcelona Spain)My wife and I consider ourselves somewhat of foodies. I didn't want my foreign guests to feel uncomfortable so I decided to leave her instead of the $35 more dollars in tip. This is her extra tip. I'll be contacting the management tomorrow. This is one of my favorites in town. It's a bit pricey but I think it's worth it. They have a great surf and turf and their seafood dishes always impress. Atmosphere is very old school. I'm sure the decor hasn't changed since its opened and it definitely has "mood lighting." I could probably go there just to eat their clams casino, some of the best I've ever had. Ok..... I'm pretty harsh on many of my reviews. We had the best steak here ( by far) of any restaurant in the Harrisburg area. I hesitate ordering a steak anywhere on Central Pa because most everywhere sucks with steak. The NY Strip we ordered medium rare came out medium rare, it was a very fine cut of steak and it was amazing. We sat at the bar and were taken care of well. Yes, it's old school, it hasn't changed much inside on 30 years and who cares! The Greek salad was 100% on point also and my gf has been talking about that salad for three weeks now. February 14, 2023 my husband and I were prepared to have outstanding night. We have been to the Progress Grill in the past and we were looking forward to the experience and the food. They have went down hill by 1K. I ordered the Prime Rib and it looked like deer meat they served it with beets! YES Beets! and it was 8 inches thick! My husband sliced a sliver, tasted it and spit it into the napkin!!! He got the Seafood Plater and his lobster tail was brown I tasted it and it was spoiled!!!! We got the stuffed mushrooms, for an appetizer and the tray it came on was hot and the mushrooms were room temp. at best!! The carpet was dirty and the tables were falling apart. Not to mention the menu is on paper!! Do not waste your time nor your money!!! I would give it zero stars if I was able to. Very disappointing. Went for our anniversary. To start with I asked for lemonade & was told they don't have lemonade. How can you be in business for over 20 years & don't even have lemonade? Consumer beware. Food is terrible. Would not feed a dog their food. Four people sent there food back 7 times and it was never made right. Half of us could not eat the food...microwaved baked potatoes, cold broiled fish, grey burnt boiled crab legs and cold, vegetables not even cooked still frozen. Sent steaks back twice then burnt to crisp. They threw our dinners in the trash because they were so bad and ask me to pay for everything. Never spoke to a Manager or owner. I can imagine why. Writing this review (sort-of-kind-of) tears me up inside--growing up in Harrisburg, better dining has only been progressing over the past five or six years--when I was much younger, the only real restaurants in Harrisburg included the Peachtree and Progress Grill (I'm sure there were one or two more, but these were the "places to go" if you asked around). So, fond memories aside, I thought I would see what the Progress Grill really had to offer as an adult (e.g., one who eats more than chicken fingers and grilled cheese). The pros: -This place literally has not changed since it's opened. I feel like I'm in an old hotel restaurant, or possibly a Rotary Club meeting. It's a good thing, though, because it reminds me of what kind of city Harrisburg is. -If you're from Harrisburg, you'll always see someone you know (I ran into my alma mater's principle, who has since retired). -The service is incredible, and all of the servers know everyone or know someone who knows everyone. You'll always receive a smile, and any dish can be altered to your convenience without any problems. -They always have a nice wine list. The con: -The food is good for a buttery home-style higher-end meal (if you don't feel like cooking yourself a steak or making your own bisque); however, it is super overpriced. SUPER OVERPRICED. The cheapest entree looked to be the single broiled crabcake ($15), which is just what it says--a single, broiled crabcake. You get two sides (which range from garden or greek salad to french fries to vegetables), but $15 for a single-serving crabcake on a plate is surreal to me. Most entrees were in the $20-$25 range, with the most expensive being a lobster tail for about $30. I'm giving Progress Grill 3 stars--it's nostalgic, it's friendly, the taste satisfies if you're looking for this kind of meal, but the pricing is unbelievably high for what you actually receive. read more

We went to the Progress Grill for the first time in many years to celebrate our anniversary. As others have written, the decor is very nice, clean and drab. My parents would have considered it the height of style when I was a kid and I'm now in my 60's. My wife had the seafood chemise. Sides were baked potato and broccoli. and I ordered the prime rib with a salad and baked potato. Thanks to Marisol B's 12/11/13 review warning of no complimentary beverage refills/no warning we stuck to water. Our entrees were excellent. The seafood chemise was filled with seafood, mainly shrimp, in a light cream sauce. My prime rib was perfectly roasted; a large slab served on the bone. Service was very professional; something you rarely experience these days. Unfortunately, a Central Pennsylvania restaurant with Big City prices ($22-$50 for entrees) should not scrimp by serving cold frozen broccoli,supermarket iceberg bag salad (albeit with an excellent Greek dressing, 2 Greek olives and a tomato wedge), foil-wrapped potatoes and nondescript dinner rolls. If it weren't for the restaurant's 1950's dark decor and roadside diner quality sides, I would have gone 5 stars. read more

Ahhh... the Progress Grill. A place unchanged and unbothered by the changing times, where good meat, good seafood, and good liquor all converge in a pleasant, low-ambiance environment. I've been coming here for quite some time, quite often when I was a kid and now about once a year when I'm back to visit the family. The meat is consistently good, the crabcakes consistently fabulous. The dolma - get them warm - are really good, too. The cocktails - or, more accurately, the beefeater martinis, since that's all I ever get - are well mixed; though sometimes the glasses aren't chilled beforehand. The wine list is reasonable for the area - I especially like the Conn Creek cab with my steak - but suffers in comparison to those you'd see in larger metros. The service is consistent and attentive. They've all been working there for a while and always recognize us when we arrive. That's definitely a plus. There's ample parking and ample seating, we've never had to wait for a place to sit. All in all, a great place - if you're visiting the area give it a shot if you like hearty food with some sophistication and a good, friendly place to have a meal. read more

I'm not one for handing out gratuitous praise. If I praise an establishment, it is because I highly value what it has to offer. So, I'm ashamed to admit that after dining at the Progress Grille (note correct spelling) for more than 30 years, I think that I had never taken the time to write a review. That's a major error of omission on my part, and I'm correcting it now. The service, steaks, prime rib and seafood here are truly wonderful. Let me give you an example. My wife and I dined here most recently this past Saturday night (1/8/21). I started with the seafood bisque. It is literally loaded with scrumptious shellfish in a delicious broth. I then had their traditional (i.e., non-Greek) salad with some of my wife's blue cheese crumbles and French dressing. It was very fresh. The lettuce was crisp and the tomato was firm and juicy, just the way I like them. Joanne, our amazing waitress, brought a basket of delicious rolls with the salads. For my main dish, I chose the Kansas (City?) bone-in ribeye, medium rare with their delectable rice pilaf. The two side dishes (in my case salad and rice pilaf) come with the meal at no extra charge. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. It takes a large portion to fill me up, and Nick and John (owners) are very generous when it comes to portion size. I also had some of my wife's medium rare prime rib, which was served with the bone. Lucky me! We didn't have them tonight, but they have absolutely phenomenal crabcakes. I haven't had better ones anywhere, including Maryland. My favorite dessert there is their peanut butter and chocolate pie. I passed this time only because I couldn't afford the additional calories. Today is Monday, and I'm still savoring that memorable meal. I feel the same way every time I leave the Progress Grille. The restaurant is a bit on the pricey side (though not by New York City standards). But, trust me, it's worth every penny. read more

Wow talk about a time warp! Take a step right back into the 70's. This is an old school restaurant holding onto the menu and decor of yesteryear. The menu is too big and a little confusing which is not surprising probably hasn't been changed since before the Cold War. All that aside if you can look past the ambiance and the average age of the patrons this is a great place for stiff cocktail and a well cooked steak. Really great cuts of beef and the crab cakes are fresh and large. The apps are a little small but the calamari and steamed clams are well done. I had the bone in rib eye which was massive and cooked really well. The wine list is really lacking but if you are a wine lover you are probably going somewhere else. I would stick with the cocktails. I would definitely go back for the steaks and drinks and just accept the menu and ambiance for what it is. read more

The outside decor and sign just scream 'run-down diner' but it is far from that. The atmosphere inside is an old school semi-fancy, low lit, casual, friendly, slightly romantic feel to it, with a pinch of 1970's mafioso restaurant thrown in for good measure. The staff is very friendly. The experience is great, but what really keeps us coming back is the food. I'm shocked that so many on here have had bad experiences with the food, but our family absolutely loves it and hasn't had a bad meal yet. My most frequent dinner choice is the 'Poor Man's Surf and Turf' which is a big steak and a big crabcake... and by the way, the crabcakes are some of the best in the area. I have never understood why people like this place so much. The ambiance is lackluster at best, and the restaurant is crowded and loud. The steaks are fine, nothing to write home about. The crabcakes are very good, and that is the only reason I'm giving three stars instead of two. read more
