I felt the raspberry was much sweeter than the earl grey matcha but both were delicious. We tried to stop by a few times during the weekend on a hot day and the lines were out the door and wrapped around; No Thanks! We tried again on a weekday and there was no line. My first impression when I walked inside was: no glam, no screen, no gimmick. Okay. cool, very industrial-like. The printed menu listed their prices; thank you for that. The menu was categorized into matcha, signature and specialty vs non-matcha. Prices ranged from $6 to $7.50. Banana Cream Matcha it is $7.50 - I really wanted the toffee bits. When we went up to order, we asked for less ice, we asked for less ice and were told there was no option for that. They cannot make it like that. That's unfortunate, but we still ordered it anyway. They had quite a bit of people working and doing different things. It was pretty cool that they used a scale to weigh everything out so the drinks would all taste consistent. The matcha drink was good, but it was not how I expected it to be. I am no matcha expert, but the drink did not satisfy my taste buds. I guess I wanted more flavor or more sweetness. As a matcha addict who constantly gets Project Matcha posts in her Instagram feed, I had to visit during my quick weekend trip to Portland. Project Matcha opened just a few months ago in the Alphabet District and they consistently have a long line out the door- the Instagram reels don't lie! Their matcha drinks go for about $7.50 each, which honestly is comparable to a lot of drink prices these days, but at least there is no sales tax. Project Matcha serves your classic matcha latte, but also unique twists on matcha lattes like the Earl Grey Project Matcha, Raspberry Vanilla Matcha, Banana Cream Matcha, Blueberry Lavender Matcha, and Yuzu Matcha Tonic. They additionally have a Specials Menu at the register, which happen to be a frozen matcha and a pistachio matcha this month (or season... not sure how often they change out the menu). They also have non-matcha items including espresso drinks and hojicha. If you want something sweet to go with your matcha, they serve matcha blondies, mochi cookies, and matcha tiramisu, but they're honestly pretty expensive at $5-$6 per treat. My friends and I came at 11:20am on a Sunday morning and had to wait about 30 minutes to get to the front of the line. I ordered the RASPBERRY VANILLA MATCHA LATTE ($7.50) with oat milk and a STRAWBERRY MATCHA LATTE ($7.50) with whole milk for one of my friends. My other friend ordered the Project Matcha special the KAITLYN MATCHA ($8) with oat milk, which is a matcha topped with pistachio cream and topped with pistachio pieces. Note that you can't adjust the ice level or sweetness level for any of the drinks and you can only get a 16-oz drink. However, plant milk (oat or almond) are at no additional cost if you don't want whole milk. The baristas are very friendly and efficient and we got our orders within 10 minutes after ordering. The RASPBERRY VANILLA MATCHA LATTE was excellent and reminded me of a raspberry popsicle with vanilla ice cream filling. It was sweet, but not overly sweet by any means and a drink I would definitely get again since I haven't seen this drink sold at other matcha places. The STRAWBERRY MATCHA LATTE was good too, but I personally liked the raspberry one better because it had more flavor complexity. With that said, you can't go wrong with this classic combo! Lastly, the KAITLYN MATCHA (the pistachio matcha) was absolutely delicious. It was on the sweeter side as well, but the salted pistachio pieces and pistachio cream softened the sweetness. The pistachio cream was thick and rich- it reminded me of the Starbucks pistachio cold foam, but better because it tasted much more natural. Since I'm a big fan of pistachios, I would also get this drink again if they offered it as a special (or permanent menu item)! In terms of atmosphere, the interior is super trendy and modern, which matches their aesthetic matcha colored sign and modern font. Indoor seating is limited as the cafe is quite small and tight. With all the customers lining up to order drinks and waiting for their drinks, it's not a place that i would personally want to hang around to study or work at, but it would be okay for a quick matcha chat. Project Matcha has a few outdoor tables for when it's nice outside, but because the sidewalks are narrow, you run into the same issue of having a line of people wrap around your table. If you're looking for matcha ceramicware to upgrade your home kitchen matcha, they sell matcha bowls from local artists in the corner next to the counter which are priced at about $55 on up. They do not sell any other matcha tools or matcha powder currently. There seems to be a bottle neck phenomenon occurring at Project Matcha's cash register. There is a line out of the door and wraps around the side. However, when we paid attention, the drinks come out fairly quickly. It just takes quite some time to get to actually order. I would be more understanding if the wait was due to the hand whisking of the drinks contributing to the wait, but this is not the case. The hand whisking folks are on it, the ordering folks may need a more steam lined process. This wasn't even around the time of grand opening. We stopped in during grand opening and ended up leaving because they ran out of things. This review is based on a visit several months after. The got the pistachio matcha drink. It was ok. You could taste the pistachio flavor, but the drink itself was quite sweet and took away from the matcha taste. The matcha had a nice bright green hue and was whisked well. This is was fantastic matcha. The flavors in both of our drinks was so good. I ordered the Einspanner and I'm obsessed with the sea salt. I will be ordering that again next time. My partner ordered the banana cream and I was surprised to enjoy it. Interesting combo - it works! As for the inside, I wouldn't plan on making it a hang out during their opening hours, but I was told it gets quieter later on. So plan your visit accordingly! Service was so so kind. Even with the long, busy line, the cashier welcomed us warmly and asked about our day and explained the menu a bit. I want to give this place 5 stars, but for as long as we waited, the drinks were gone in minutes.
