Proletariat is a great spot in Greenwich Village to grab a beer with a friend. It's mostly bar seating so I wouldn't bring a group unless it's for day drinking. There are about 20 beers on tap plus double the amount from small batch craft breweries. Their website says, "name, new and unusual beers". I know many small breweries but I knew very few of the bottled or craft beers. They even had varietals I had not heard about, so unless you're a hipster beer snob expect to be adventurous. I did not like everything I had but I really respect their selection. If you are in the East Village and want a spot to try new beers that you would be hard pressed to find on your own or even another bar around the city. read more

We come here regularly since they change their beer offered every week or so. We love trying new things from all over the world. We discovered our favorite sour beer and our search to buy it lead us to a huge beer store in Westchester, so glad we found it! The place is usually full but never packed and we usually don't have to wait to get a seat. We also love that you can buy a small serving for as little as $3 so we can really try a lot in one sitting without breaking the bank! read more

There is no shortage of craft beer bars in NYC these days. It is a wonderful development, however, it makes it pretty difficult to stand out as a new brew spot. Proletariat manages to do just that despite these odds. There theme of new, rare, and unique brews give beer enthusiasts a reason to slide into this small beer haven. Ohh, this place has been on my list for a while and finally made it in. Awesome little place with great craft beers, very friendly/chill vibe all around. Would be tough if you came in and couldn't get a seat, it's not big for groups, but perfect for catching up with a buddy over a great beer. I found this place through Edible, so I was pretty stoked at having the chance to check this place out. I'm the type of person that anytime I go to the bar, I go for the beer on draught I've never had before. Well, that actually applies to everything. I rarely do the same thing twice when it comes to food. Proletariat is perfect for me then. Now that craft beer is so widespread, there are so many breweries that are doing cool things but just don't have the size to show off their results so this is their stage. Ive been to beer festivals and have gone beyond Blue Moon, Allegash, Magic Hat and Long Trail, but I've never even heard of the breweries featured here, which is exactly why I like it. What's more, is that the taps rotate regularly, as they often only get a few kegs of a beer. The board with refrigerator alphabet magnets and our bartender confirms this. I love rotating menus since to me it's like trying a whole new place. There are different sizes of many beers, which is perfect as it's an easy way to try four beers instead of just maybe two. The prices are reasonable too. You're still paying $8-$9 for a pint, but this is worth it. You're not getting these anywhere else. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgable, but if you want to have a real chat with them about the beers you're enjoying, go at an off hour. Post-work is not the time to be asking them about the origin of the hops in your beer. They won't be brusque, but you can tell their busy. There's only one board that describes all the beers and their category, so snap a pic of that before you grab a stool so you can reference it as you imbibe. Pretty small, but very worthwhile. This has to be the most pretentious bar I have been to in my entire life. The beers are okay I guess. But at what cost?

Beer is very good but the service might've been the rudest people I've ever experienced. It was my friends birthday and he loves craft beer. We yelped bars and Proletariat came up. From the pictures the place looks much bigger than it is and we invited a bunch of people to the bar to celebrate with us. When we got there we couldn't move it was so small. It was an honest mistake but the bartenders could not have handled it worse. They were being extremely rude and reprimanding us like children. We left immediately out of frustration with them and the size of the place. Definitely would not go back just because of the rude bartenders. read more

This place is a solid beer and cider joint that will leave you having tried something new and found something awesome. With a very welcoming vibe, the rather small establishment nevers stays packed too long. Most seating is at the bar with a pair of tables near the entrance that a slightly larger group can stand and sit around. The staff knows their stuff and will be helpful at taking your orders. Unfortunately for non-beer lovers, they really aren't going to have much to offer be very helpful otherwise. A fine stop for the night, but not the greatest for groups. read more

This place has the best beer list in the East Village, if not all of downtown. They carry offbeat and unknown breweries even to a well-versed beer snob like myself. For example, they had Maine Brewing "Lunch" two years ago, way before the company took off. While the prices run high, the mood befits its name. If you're in the neighborhood I'd definitely suggest popping in for a pint. read more

Coming from Europe and with a great knowledge of German and Belgian beer, I must say I like this place a lot. Hitachiro - Weizen and any dark beer are my favorites. I wanted to write love instead of like, but the service is lacking. I went there twice. On both instances there were issues with the credit card register. They did not work. The first time it was resolved, but the second time I had to pay cash. Our tab was something like $44. We gave him $45 instead of leaving a nice tip with the credit card. It was all we had on us. My friends felt bad, but I didn't, as I figure they did it to themselves. I mean, I am not in the mood of going to an ATM just to get $5 out for a commission. Anyway, the good stuff clearly outweighs the not so pleasant stuff. Great price/quality for East Village, Manhattan. Cool serving glasses. Can get crowded sometimes, as it is small, but a nice experience overall. I recommend it to all craft beer lovers, but if you are a Bud Light kind of guy this is not the place for you. read more

Probably one of the nicer craft beer bars I've been to in NY. they have a great selection of beers and I like the small space. It is definitely more than a dive bar and they have half pours and samples if you just want to try the beer. The bar tenders also do a wonderful job recommending beers depending on your preference. I like IPAs and was given one of the best ones I've had in a while. We were originally planning to stop in for only one drink, but we liked it so much that we had a couple of beers. We were also lucky enough to get a seat at the bar, which is near impossible for a Friday night. Overall, a very pleasant experience. read more

If you enjoy a more "deep cut" selection of craft beer, this is the bar for you. Solid selection of different styles, both local and non-local. They also have a pretty good selection bottled, although I didn't look into those too much. Trendy/hipster atmosphere that's also pretty cozy. This can be a bad thing if it's busy, but what bar isn't? This is a great place to meet a fellow craft beer lover for a few rounds. Will go again for sure. read more

We've been here a million times and they have the best sours and lambics. High end beers so naturally on the pricier side but you can always get a taster. Rare, new and unusual beer. Proletariat has a great name, cool logo and a range of beers from $8 drafts to $48 bottles. The real draw here is the rotating selection of beers on tap with expert bartenders. Tell them what you're in the mood for and they'll tell you what to get. Both of my visits to this bar left me with a great beer in my belly and a happy wallet. My most recent time, I chose my first beer beforehand online, the Piccolo Birrfico Season. A Belgian wheat beer with a sour, tart and refreshingly light taste. It was a good selection, but not right for my mood. My second beer I left in the hands of the experts, opting for a darker Baltic Porter. Les Tres Mousquetaires Grande Cuvée was a malty and supremely chocolaty beer with a rich and creamy body. A perfect choice if you enjoy a sweeter, heavier beer. Close and cozy, the bar fits well in its space with plenty of bar seating and standing room. The crowd ebbs and flows through the night but never got packed, even on a Friday. Old school tattoo art adorns the wall in assorted frames that give the bar an upright casual feel. Perfect for a small group or two people looking to sit and have a great beer. I would highly recommend this bar to a friend. read more

I liked that there were options to get a half or taste size of beer. Especially great for someone like myself that never knows what beer is good. The vibe is cool too - intimate and good funk/old school hip-hop music (at least on Wed night). Overall, great service and selection. Enjoyable atmosphere. I am an avid beer drinker, and many of the beers here were unfamiliar to me. The bartender took time to explain and recommend beers to each of us. When I was unsure about a beer, he joked "Order it and if you don't like it, I'll drink it. That's how good it is." Clearly Proletariat only stocks beer they believe in and it shows. I will definitely return. read more

Amazing beer selection; you definitely have plenty of options to choose from that you won't find in most other bars. Ask for recommendations on what you're in the mood for and your bound to get something pretty good. They don't serve anything other than beer and one or two wines, so if beer isn't your thing, this spot may not be for you. Great atmosphere too and quite cozy and clean. read more

This was such a great find! They have a great range of beers and they are all reasonably priced. I went on Thursday after work and because it is a small space, it can get crowded pretty easily. There was also only one bartender so service was pretty slow. read more

I wish I had known about this place sooner. It lives up to the reputation of being a beer speakeasy and what made the experience for me was the bartender. One of the rare times I've met a beer aficionado who didn't make you feel stupid if you wanted a suggestion, or a sample, or didn't even know what you wanted. The bartender made you feel like at home making sure you were happy with your drink. Did I mention the samples? They are generous and will really help you pick out your stuff. Also I don't really think you need to be a super beer craft person to enjoy this place because they have high quality cider as well. Proletariat is quickly climbing my list of favorite spots in NYC. The tap list is full of nothing but home runs, and there is always a bottle or two (at least) of must-try beers. The fact that you can get small pours is great for when you're paralyzed by choice and have to try everything. The ambiance is great, and low-key. There is always good music playing, and I've never seen the place overcrowded. For anyone who enjoys outstanding beer, you have to go to Proletariat. read more

This place is small, blasting loud rap music and selling 4oz beers for 7 dollars. Supposedly hard to find top quality craft brews, in reality most of those brews are bad amateurish assemblies. Stay away from this place made for hipsters whi know nothing about real craft beer. There are ar least 3 or 4 proper taprooms in new york, this is not one of them read more
