Proper Foods has many locations in the Financial District that offers delicious and wholesome food that are pre-packaged for grab and go. Perfect for the office workers that need to get a quick bite to eat. They offer freshly menu of salads, sandwiches, soups and entrees, juices, energy bars and fruits. There is even a small microwave oven should you need to hear up your food. Since I stopped by late afternoon, I got an energy bar for my ferry ride back home. The refrigerated energy bar was dense and had goji berry, rolled oats, flax seed, coconut, peanut butter and dark chocolate. It was a good healthy snack to tie me over before dinner. I can see how Proper Foods fits a niche of customers that need to quickly some food to go.

Time must heel all wounds or wound all heels, I'm not sure. That's because I was judgey about the high prices and sterile look of this burgeoning FiDi chain about four years ago when I tried their first locations on Mission near First and Montgomery at Sutter. What I didn't grouse so much about was the quality of the ingredients because it is indeed "Gourmet to Go" as bilked...I mean billed. I've been to this semi-hidden spot in 2 Embarcadero a few times since I work nearby. Sometimes I just get tired of Breaking Bad...I mean Bread, and the faux-robotics of Eatsa just don't cut it. I come here because even with a long lunchtime line, it's fast and I can go back to my hole in record time. The $14.95 Tuna Nicoise Salad was quite good as the ahi tuna mixed well with the saltiness of the crispy capers and picholine olives as well as the snap of the green beans (photo: http://bit.ly/2WftTkY). However, the $13.95 Pulpo Primavera has been my recent favorite as the arugula takes a back seat to the tasty braised octopus and garbanzo beans (photo: http://bit.ly/2LU8OZD). I just have to remember it's 530 calories according to MyFitnessPal. I wish they would add that info on their immaculate labels. FOOD - 4 stars...no complaints about the quality but budget wisely AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...like Dean without DeLuca...or seating SERVICE -3.5 stars...friendly enough for the microsecond encounter it was TOTAL - 4 stars...maybe not so much Proper as convenient RELATED - Famished in the FiDi? Tastes good! Couscous spinach salad with honey coriander chicken 4/5 I like the couscous a lot!! Cons: - expensive lol

    Croissant Breakfast Sandwich w/ Bacon

Kinda like a California version of Pret a Manger, but much more hit-or-miss. Everything is cold with the option of having it reheated, which works for some items and not others. I suppose if you find something you like, it's a quick and dependable food option. Croissant Breakfast Sandwich w/ Bacon: This was surprisingly good for being reheated. The fried egg still had a little bit of a runny yolk. The bacon was thick and crispy. And the croissant was that nice mix of chewy and a little flaky. It's like a like a much better version of Burger King's Croissanwich. Gluten-Free Breakfast Sandwich + Sausage: This, unfortunately, was a sad shadow of the McMuffin. Eggs were like a wet sloppy pile that fell everywhere. The spread seemed a bit unnecessary for a breakfast sandwich, like it should have been saved for a turkey sandwich at lunch. The sausage did not reheat all that well. And gluten-free bread, seriously worth avoiding this unless you got celiac disease.

A bug that was buried in my rice.

Food was good until I got to 3/4th of the way done. Then I found a very disgusting surprise that made me almost throw up. A massive bug buried underneath the rice. Who knows if I would've even noticed had I continued. Definitely disgusted and not returning again. EDIT: They've almost immediately followed up and apologized and offered a refund. I understand this is a rare case and I'll return one day in hopes of a second chance.

Store #9 for healthy food takeout chain Proper Food, opened at 2 EC. Service is friendly, and so far the staff does a good job of stocking all the shelves with at least a few items until late afternoon. Well illuminated large open space, utensils and napkins on the window corner. In my opinion, breakfast items are a better value ($4-$6 average) than lunch items, which are a tad expensive ($12 average) for what u get. Food portion is filling, but the amount of protein is very modest for lunch items with ahi tuna or steak. Overall, food taste is average. The main selling point is the use of ultra healthy organic ingredients. I like the Seared lemon pepper tuna salad ($13.75, sliced rare tuna over basmati yellow rice with almonds, lentils, and tomato + kale salad), but dislike eating cold rice. So I place the tuna and salad components on a separate paper plate, and then microwave the rice. I don't like the Vietnamese wrap filled with Tempeh ($9.95). The peanut sauce, and sweet and sour fish sauce, don't complement the Tempeh's fermented flavor (and unpleasant crumbly liver texture). Also the rice paper wrapper was starting to harden on one end. I prefer Tempeh that's panfried until crispy. Hours: M-F 7am-6pm

Quick lunches, always delicious! Staff is very courteous every time I go in there. Haven't had a bad lunch from them yet, but only have tried the lemon pepper tuna salad and salmon lunch.

I had the quinoa beet salad. The quinoa, barely cooked, was like biting into rocks. Almost lost a tooth. Thanks, but no thanks.

I walked past it and got like a block away and was like maaaaaan shiiiiiittt Im turning around lol. I went back and came to get a sanny and Im happy I did, I was planning on eating it on the walk. The place has a lot of choices like a regular deli youd find in the northeast. San Francisco has definitely the best Little Italy as far as choices to pick from and its really big and spread out. I had the Goodfella. Roast beef, prosciutto, salami, provolone and basil. I added the pesto and olive oil and replaced the provolone with fresh mozzarella. Best part was there was an old ass lady who made the sanny and she loaded it lol. The bread makes the sandwich and it was really soft and crunchy. Soo good. I 1000% recommend this place and I am sure she makes all the sandwiches the same!

Wowowow …read more... Visited Alimento twice, my most recent being today -- 6/27. It's a small deli shop that offers gelato, sandwiches, and pastries. They also have quite a large selection of alcohol and cigarettes-- which could make for a good quick pick-me-up. I visited on a Wednesday night and got myself a cone with two scoops of Hazelnut Brownie + Stracciatella -- which were honestly so yummy. It was stretchy and soft and made for a perfect dessert after dinner. You are allowed only two samples though so be wary of your choices. Today, when I went -- I was excited to try their sandwiches, I was looking at the menu and the Alpino caught my eye. Normally, not a fan of bacon but this sandwich was fresh- the mix they offer in sauces and veggies were so good. The sandwich was refreshing to eat with a decent amount of turkey slices they packed in. The bread was also toasted and gave a nice crunch with a soft interior to every bite. The sandwich is admittedly a little pricey, but I would purchase again. Now the customer service, like other reviews may have mentioned was a little off at times? It didn't feel friendly or welcoming at times and when I was ordering I felt rushed or ignored-- I was trying to order two sandwiches to which, she immediately began to make the first one without a single word. I chose to wait until she was done because I wasn't sure when I could let her know about the other order as she was moving back and forth between stations, but she finished and I let her know about the other order to which she said, "How many more sandwiches?" Honestly, that comment did throw me off a little, but I told her this was the last one and she did make it quite quickly. Now, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt as she could be tired or not feeling the best-- but I would say I just wished she was a bit more acknowledgeable toward the customers behind the counter as it did make me discomforted by her lack of response and also the reaction she had when I let her know about the other sandwich. She did at least tell me to have a good day afterwards, so I do hope this isn't going to be a reoccurring incident as I really do love coming to Alimento for the gelatos and sandwiches. (~_~;) I would recommend coming here if you're visiting around North Beach! Alimento makes for a great lunch spot with their sandwiches or a nice sweet treat with their gelato. ^o^

Hillstone is a favorite among Telegraph Hill locals. My go-to's here are their French dip or lamb…read moresandwiches for lunch, and salmon or rotisserie chicken + artichoke for dinner. Good wine and cocktail selection from the bar. I would pass on their burgers though which are mediocre. What makes this place 5-stars is the service and ambiance. Some of their staff have been there for several years, which is a testament to how well the restaurant is run. Since it's along the Embarcadero and close to Fisherman's Wharf, a lot of tourists tend to wander in. And this is probably why their website says there's a strict dress code. But I feel comfortable coming here in shorts and a t-shirt. The staff is always welcoming. I also go to the Los Altos Grill which is the same restaurant as Hillstone. The menu is pretty much the same, but the service at Hillstone is just excellent.

Then they said "please don't move around so we can get the right food to you" which, like fine but that's not the reason they didn't want us to move. You're aiming for a hoity toity atmosphere, we can move plates around. There's an obnoxious but unenforced dress code (no jerseys then someone came in with a jersey and was as seated, no baseball hats...), but the straw that broke the camels back was when the hostess asked me to stay seated while I was seated. My 4 year old needed entertainment as we were paying the bill, we were in our last few minutes there and she told me that I had to stay in my seat. Which I was. They didn't get the order right for said 4 year old: hamburger, no cheese. Showed up with cheese. If you don't want kids in your restaurant, just turn people away. But also you're on the Embarcadero, not in a fancy neighborhood. Overpriced by 20%.

"this is one of the best meals i've ever had"…read more Real words I said today at lunch. As a certified savory girly, this meal hit all the right spots! My friend and ai started with the blackberry slushy drink, which was divine! Like an açaí bowl of it had alcohol. We shared the Caesar salad. It was lemony salty and delicious. Perfect amount of dressing and generous with the croutons and parm! We also shared the burrata pizza. Yum! The bread was cooked perfectly, and the cheese and tomatoes were amazing. The lemon oil was soo good and all came together for a perfect pizza. We each got soft serve to finish, and I got vanilla with the brown sugar cereal topping. Wow! It was delicious and creamy and the perfect way to end the meal. The interior was very open and cute! The staff were all very friendly, including our server Brennan!
