I love salads so decided to stop by on my way to work to pick one up. I'm glad that their hours are 7am Monday-Friday and right next to my bus stop. There was only one customer when I walked in on a Thursday 15 minute before 8am. The interior was clean, and I liked that it's a pick up and go type of spot. I really wanted to try their salmon salad since a lot of people on Reddit highly recommended it, so I got the Winter Salad. The salmon was a honey-lemon glazed and paired so well with the salad, especially the tangerine. I really liked the tanginess of the orange vinaigrette. I wished that there was more salad but other than that there are no other complaints. I will definitely back to try other salads! read more

There's several locations for Proper Foods in downtown SF. This one is nestled in Embarcadero Center. Plenty of the weekday office crowd come to Proper Foods for their grab and go items (everything at Proper Foods is designed for grab and go) and it usually empties out in the evenings. A top notch spot for if want a fresh meal, and want extremely fast grab and go food in the day (yes, it looks like a long line at lunch, but it goes fast), or to get a premade meal to stash for lunch later. The downside is Proper Foods is pricier. As you walk up to the checkout counter, one whole wall of the store is for chilled grab and go items and you can grab entrees (everything from salads, to rice dishes, to salmon entrees) along with sides. The sides are fun, such as additional meat for your salad if you think it looks too small or could use something extra. However, all items are on the pricier side, especially the add-on extras which can quickly add up to the point you might as well just have gotten another entree. Another neat convenience is Proper Foods offers to heat up your food for you as you check out, and they wrap the package in a foil to keep it hot as you travel with it. To-go items (silverware, napkins, etc) are by the entrance/exit. You pay a premium for Proper Foods super quick grab and go (and optionally, have them heat it for you). It's saved me a few times when I had really tight times between meetings, or needed to swipe a lunch to put in the fridge. However, it'll run you a few dollars more, and there's plenty of other slightly slower locations around the area if you can squeeze a few more minutes out of your calendar for your lunch break. read more

Proper Food was good don't get me wrong, and it is a good option for a healthy lunch that is quick, but it is not that good and the portions are small. I think I would be happy if it cost $5 but instead it's closer to $15 or $20. I understand it may just be expensive ingredient for better quality (and sustainability is a part of it), but it's not really reflected in the taste. Proper Foods has many locations in the Financial District that offers delicious and wholesome food that are pre-packaged for grab and go. Perfect for the office workers that need to get a quick bite to eat. They offer freshly menu of salads, sandwiches, soups and entrees, juices, energy bars and fruits. There is even a small microwave oven should you need to hear up your food. Since I stopped by late afternoon, I got an energy bar for my ferry ride back home. The refrigerated energy bar was dense and had goji berry, rolled oats, flax seed, coconut, peanut butter and dark chocolate. It was a good healthy snack to tie me over before dinner. The food is fresh, well prepared and, I think, reasonably priced for this neighborhood. We had the Summer Salad with roasted peaches, candied nuts and spinach. One with chicken and one with salmon. I know a lot of office folks like coming here for a quick bite and I can see why. Everything is pre-packaged for a grab and go and they have a little oven thing to help you heat up your entree if you pick a hot entree. Overall everything seems a bit pricey (imo, but probably normal for city goers) for the portion, entrees are considered on the healthier end (salads, sandwiches, fish entrees etc.) and definitely portioned controlled for a nice meal that will tide you over till an afternoon snack. Time must heel all wounds or wound all heels, I'm not sure. That's because I was judgey about the high prices and sterile look of this burgeoning FiDi chain about four years ago when I tried their first locations on Mission near First and Montgomery at Sutter. What I didn't grouse so much about was the quality of the ingredients because it is indeed "Gourmet to Go" as bilked...I mean billed. I've been to this semi-hidden spot in 2 Embarcadero a few times since I work nearby. Sometimes I just get tired of Breaking Bad...I mean Bread, and the faux-robotics of Eatsa just don't cut it. I come here because even with a long lunchtime line, it's fast and I can go back to my hole in record time. The $14.95 Tuna Nicoise Salad was quite good as the ahi tuna mixed well with the saltiness of the crispy capers and picholine olives as well as the snap of the green beans (photo: http://bit.ly/2WftTkY). Kinda like a California version of Pret a Manger, but much more hit-or-miss. Everything is cold with the option of having it reheated, which works for some items and not others. I suppose if you find something you like, it's a quick and dependable food option. Croissant Breakfast Sandwich w/ Bacon: This was surprisingly good for being reheated. The fried egg still had a little bit of a runny yolk. The bacon was thick and crispy. And the croissant was that nice mix of chewy and a little flaky. It's like a like a much better version of Burger King's Croissanwich. Gluten-Free Breakfast Sandwich + Sausage: This, unfortunately, was a sad shadow of the McMuffin. Eggs were like a wet sloppy pile that fell everywhere. The spread seemed a bit unnecessary for a breakfast sandwich, like it should have been saved for a turkey sandwich at lunch. The sausage did not reheat all that well. And gluten-free bread, seriously worth avoiding this unless you got celiac disease. read more

Obsessed with the Chinese Chicken Salad. I have ventured and tried others - the Cobb is good too but I always go back to the Chinese Chicken one. Salads are always fresh and they're a good size. Service is friendly, and so far the staff does a good job of stocking all the shelves with at least a few items until late afternoon. Well illuminated large open space, utensils and napkins on the window corner. In my opinion, breakfast items are a better value ($4-$6 average) than lunch items, which are a tad expensive ($12 average) for what u get. Food portion is filling, but the amount of protein is very modest for lunch items with ahi tuna or steak. Overall, food taste is average. The main selling point is the use of ultra healthy organic ingredients. I like the Seared lemon pepper tuna salad ($13.75, sliced rare tuna over basmati yellow rice with almonds, lentils, and tomato + kale salad), but dislike eating cold rice. So I place the tuna and salad components on a separate paper plate, and then microwave the rice. I don't like the Vietnamese wrap filled with Tempeh ($9.95). The peanut sauce, and sweet and sour fish sauce, don't complement the Tempeh's fermented flavor (and unpleasant crumbly liver texture). Also the rice paper wrapper was starting to harden on one end. When Proper Food was being built down the street from my office, I could not be more excited - I knew this would be one of my go-to lunch spots because of the proximity alone. I always roll my eyes at how expensive SF salads can be, especially in the FiDi area (around $10-15 commonly)... so I'm going to just leave that out and focus on the food and service in this review. Some of my favorite items are: 1. Coconut Prawn & Kale Salad - I would call this more of a grain bowl salad hybrid because the ratio of kale to farro is about 50/50. This thing is DELICIOUS! You can even ask for them to heat up your prawns 2. Fall Salad (Seasonal) - I get this one with salmon. Such a great solid salad for a nutritious lunch. 3. Vietnamese Tempeh Wrap - UGH. The sauce, the crunch, the whole thing is super delicious. Best non-tofu veggie wrap I've ever had. 4. Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookie - surprisingly amazing texture and not too sweet. For $1.75, it's one of the more affordable things sold at Proper! I'm always impressed when a great vegan cheese (almond cheese in this case) is used in a vegan wrap. It's a grab-n-go kind of store front with very healthy options. Came here for lunch and was pleased with the variety of grab-and-go options but was disappointed by the actual food. Was torn between ordering the carnitas burrito or the Korean bbq bowl, but ended up ordering the bowl. A staff member kindly offered to take my bowl to heat up while I was waiting in line for the cashier, so I was able to almost immediately get my food after paying. Although there is no seating inside the store, there is tons of seating outside the store which was great on a nice sunny day. I felt as though the bowl was not great as the texture of the beef was off and the rice felt a bit over cooked. I love coming here in the mornings and grabbing their Vegan Tofu Wrap and some Cholula hot sauce to top it with. It is a little pricey (over $7 for the wrap) but it is very filling, quick, and tastes great. Would definitely recommend giving Proper Food a try! read more

Today was my first foray into Proper Food and darn was I impressed. I usually have a protein/greens smoothie for breakfast, which I love, but this morning I woke up with a powerful hankering for a hot breakfast. As I don't have time to whip up a hot breakfast on weekday mornings, I decided to give Proper Food in my building a go. I've heard good things about their pre-packaged but whole food focused menu, and since a quick but health minded meal is right up my alley, it seemed like the natural choice. Upon walking in, one of the first things I saw was a turkey sausage and egg muffin sandwich with pesto and marinated tomato. Naturally, this sounded quite yummy, though arguably not the healthiest option, however I was sure this GF gal would not be able to eat such a thing. So I started perusing for safer options...but then, just as my eyes started to slide down along the shelf, I caught sight of my two favorite words on the package, "Gluten Free." Yes, this whole marvelous sandwich concoction was on a pretty darn fluffy looking GLUTEN FREE English muffin. Be still my beating heart. Despite some cross-contamination warnings, I decided to throw caution to the wind and try it. This is not something I would normally do but, well, did I say it looked fluffy? (the holy grail of GF bread) and by that time I was hungry enough that I was considering gnawing on my wool dress (it's from a sheep, must have some nutritive value, no?). The very nice, smily staff offered to heat up my sando, did so, and then helpfully covered it in foil to keep it warm during my trip up the elevator. Presto! I was out of there in maybe 5 minutes. Safely ensconced in my office, I think I ate this sandwich in maybe 1 minute but boy did I enjoy that 1 minute. I am embarrassed to say that anyone listening in on me in my office for that one minute likely heard some very amorous noises. That fluffy looking muffin was indeed fluffy, it held together well, the egg, pesto, and tomato was melody of delicious, and I am having no "I've been glutened" symptoms. Breakfast, conquered. My only gripe is that I wish they would have left out the cheese. Between the sausage and egg, there was plenty of fat to go around in that sando. But for my once in a blue moon egg sando needs, that I heretofore never knew I had, this will do the trick. read more
