I've been a loyal Weber's Bakery customer for some time. I always place orders at Webers for holidays and my son's birthday. This year I decided to order at Pticek's and I'm so glad that I did. Price wise it's about the same as Webers but the cakes are yummier. The whipped cream is out of this world delish. My sons love their butter cream cupcakes. They did and amazing Jon with my sons birthday cakes. They put a lot of love into their bakery. I love their atomic cake. Usually when I get cakes with fruit fillings from other bakeries it's a little hard to cut without having the fresh fruit filling fall out. At pticek I don't know how they do it but when I slice their atomic cake all the fruits stay beautifully in the cake. However I had a not so pleasant experience last week. I placed an order ahead for Thanksgiving. An atomic cake some cupcakes and a cheesecake and some Kolaky cookies. Everything was delicious but what left in a sour taste in my mouth was the poor costumer service. The women that work their are such sweethearts I've never had a complaint until now. I was attended by an older Latina with a black and grey shirt hair and glasses. She was very rude she yelled bottom line she gave poor costumer service. There is another Latina with black ponytail and glasses she's a sweetheart she always takes great care of costumes unlike her older coworker with the bad attitude. read more

This neighborhood gem is my favorite for Polish pastries! I know there's one that is bigger, closer to Harlem however, I love their customer service here along with what they make. So today I placed an order for a birthday cake it was my first time at this bakery. The staff was attentive and helpful. The decoration of the cake turned out cute and I must say the cake was super moist and fresh! The filling was strawberries and bananas, it was so good! Rudest customer service ever! I was trying to get a birthday cake for my friend. A lady who works in this bakery told my to bring a picture on the phone, and they would like to make something like the cake on the pic. However, when I arrived at the store, they told me that I could not pick the decoration I like. What they would do is just putting some cream flowers on the top. They were very impatient and unprofessional, and made my feel like my suggestion (decorating the top with some fresh fruits) was stupid. The bakery store does not look as clean and cute as many other bakeries, and their products look neither pretty or delicious. If you do not live in this neighborhood, you need not try this bakery at all. Driving to this bakery is just waste of time and oil. read more

I grew up eating kolacky from Pticek's because my grandparents' place was half a block away; nothing has changed about how good those things are, over 25 years later. This place rocks so much that I bought a massive box of assorted kolacky and hauled them up to my wedding in Elkhorn, WI for everyone to enjoy (which they did). Great old school bakery at Narragansett/ Archer Ave! First off, they have amazing danishes- every fruit under the sun as well as cheese & chocolate too. They also have an amazing variety of those little cookies; I mean like 30 different ones. I've only been here for morning items but from what I've heard they do great cakes as well! Prices seem too cheap if you ask me? Under a buck for a danish that's really good & big/ hard to find these days! Good service and even a little adjacent parking lot. BEWARE IF YOU ORDER A CUSTOM CAKE FROM THIS PLACE!! We discovered this bakery over 35 years ago as it was advertised on a bench. Over the years we have had many form cakes, specialty cakes, ordered here. Always beautiful and delicious. Not anymore! They either have new bakers or something else going on. The cakes are not as fresh but the biggest reason I will NOT ORDER ANOTHER CAKE from this place- they can't seem to get the order correct!! In September I ordered a strawberry filled birthday cake for my Mom. Cutting into it we saw no strawberries- only rotten tasting bananas! We were disappointed. I paid over $50 for a cake we didn't order. The manager said they'd give me a "discount" on my NEXT cake! So I just ordered a chocolate fudge/custard filled birthday cake last week for my husband's birthday. I reminded them about my "discount " and they gave me $10 off the price.When I served it yesterday we were very disappointed to find NO CHOCOLATE dough. We received a yellow cake! This is a genuine neighborhood bakery-- it's been in business for years and years-- they call it Bohemian style. I heard about this place at a college graduation ceremony in California from two former Chicagoans living in Seattle. They made it sound so good, that I just had to go! Great advice, it turned out. The kolotchkies are amazing!!! The bread is terrific, as is their sausage roll, and their coffee cakes. They are famous for their cakes, I just haven't gotten around to trying them yet. The place will definitely take you back-- it's the real thing! If you get there early enough, make sure you try a peach kolotchky and a chocolate chip cookie- yum! read more

I love this bakery amazing créeme or marshmallow filled horns, there lemon meringue pie , pound cake, pecan cheese coffee cake not to mention their pineapple pie . I am not sure this qualifies as a review. It's more an astonished recognition: is this the place I wrote a (first, for me) feature on in 1976 as a cub reporter at the Southtown Economist? If so, they had amazingly complex frosted cakes in the window (the Cookie Monster, then a new development in the media, stood out), and sent my boss a cake in the shape of a typewriter as thanks for the article after I had transferred to the Blue Island office. I was not assigned to write about them, I offered to do it after being amazed by the cakes in their window. They were really gracious and friendly. Let me start off by saying, I was super excited about trying this bakery for the first time. I pre ordered four paczkis and patiently waited until after dinner to eat them. The paczkis were dried out and the strawberry filling was bland and bitter. The paczkis that were in the display case didn't look the same as the ones I paid for. The ones I got were incredibly small and did not have any whipped cream in them like the ones on display. With that being said, I won't be returning to this bakery. read more

Absolutely love Pticek's Bakery! Their cakes (Rainbow with real Whip Cream frosting) are out of this world. They can make any kind of cake you want. Any character, any shape, any size. Everything is FRESH! Better get there early because by 1-2pm, the shelves are bare. They take special orders and they have daily specials. In my opinion, they blow Webers Bakery away! Whenever I'm in Chicago I stop at Pticek's Bakery. It is a short ride from MDW and you can be sure they will have the best Bohemian Kolacky you'll find. 15 different fillings, but my favorite so far are apricot and prune. A box of 6 large Kolacky will set you back less than $6 and after being xrayed at the airport security check-in you can fly home with your treats. I first saw Pticek's when we were looking at homes in the Clear-Ridge area. I was super excited to learn that I was now living within walking distance to a true Polish bakery. Mardi Gras, anyone? After a few weeks of living in the area, I stopped in on my way home one evening. It's a small, storefront place, but damn if those glass cases aren't crammed full of packzkis and cookies and cakes and kolacky. Pick your poison. The staff is friendly and they're one of the many bilingual Polish/English establishments around these parts. They DON'T take credit cards, and they close at 6:00 p.m., so you'll have to be prepared for that. Something that really sells me on this place is their Fat Tuesday operation. You call in or walk in a few days before, place your order, and pay for it. Keep your ticket stub handy, and then walk in anytime on The Day Your Arteries Will Harden, present your ticket at the counter, and walk out with your goods. Bada-bing! Instant gratification. Old Lady Pticek is a hoot...she's still there, still working hard, still barking orders, and still trying to do the best damn job for her loyal customers. Can't complain with that. I'm a big fan of the neighborhood bakery, and Pticek's is my go-to for baked goods from now on. Stop in and see what I mean. read more

I went to Pticek's & Sons Bakery today. I got a Cheesecake, and a Cheese Coffee Cake. I wasn't impressed with the Cheesecake. However, the Cheese Coffee Cake was EXREMELY good!!!.I've learned that it's called a "Cheese Pocket". OK, whatever it's called It is Awesome!!! I almost ate half of it by myself (...gave a slice to my wife..) . I MUST say that if you ever have the pleasure of visiting the Bakery, the people that serve you are VERY nice & helpful. I told them that I saw them on Chicago's BEST, and they seemed SO excited about it!! I have to say that the service made the GREAT tasting Cheese Pocket that much more enjoyable. It's rare that the customer service RAISES the experience in a way that makes the food that you happen to buy so much MORE pleasant!!! I plan on returning for sure!!! read more

A couple things...first I just bought the bacon/onion buns and they KICK BUTT! Apparently the onion prep person took the criticism to heart in other reviews and I did not find anything wrong with what I purchased. What makes these so much better than say the other ones you may get in another bakery in the hood is that they're bigger and they are completely filled with lots of bacon and onion; not just a small amount in the middle. Second they are by far the best bakery for coffee cakes and danishes including kolacky. Also their chocolate cake donuts...AMAZING! My office in the Loop love love love them and believe me there are many high-end donut shops around the downtown Chicago area. I can honestly say I've never had their cakes so no review here. One of the last and best of the "old-school ethnic" pastry shops left in Chicago! Check your calorie/carbs counters at the door! This is one of the few bakeries that makes walnut potica (poh-Teet-sah) in the Eastern European tradition of my mom and grandma. A must for Christmas and Easter!
