Hidden at the back of a market, past a corridor of coolers full of an amazing variety of quality beer, there lies a hidden gem of Punjabi cuisine. My friend from El Cerrito has been coming here for years and took me to eat dinner here but now a new owner has expanded the restaurant space and upgraded the ambiance. The owner greeted us and the service was top tier, friendly, fast and provided all that we asked for, which of course included some mango chutney. My friend had the Pakora dish with chickpeas and was very tasty and fresh. I had the chicken tandoori which has a Smokey tang to them and the jasmine rice and sauces were all excellent. My chicken was moist and juicy and came out steaming on a hot platter. The serving sizes were generous and the price was very reasonable. The owner offered some tasting of Free Kittens beer and it was also delicious and we ordered some. The beer selection is second to none and had my favorite oatmeal stout ! It was quiet and seating was comfortable. I had leftovers as there was so much to eat despite being hungry from moving furniture all day. The food is incredible at Punjabi Kitchen!! I ordered take-out and the food came piping hot and packed full of flavor. I ordered the chicken korma and shahi paneer with a side of plain naan. Each dish comes with a side of basmati rice. Great portions and one order of naan was also a large portion. I am so thrilled that there is a place close to home that has incredible Indian food! I am a fan and the slices used are truly fully bloomed and thought about in each dish. I can't wait to try more from their menu! Expand your palate and try a new dish to you! Soleil Ho turned the Bay Area on to Punjabi Kitchen, billing it as one of the most unique restaurants around! So I had to check out this strip mall eatery for myself.. it's located in the back of Bottles Beerzaar, a combination Indian grocery, craft beer, and spirit/wine store, and it featured both a bar area (with sports playing on the TV) and an area with tables/seating. The menu featured a list of authentic North Indian dishes, from appetizers to tandoori breads/meats to biryanis and curries. The Chicken Tikka was large, boneless chunks of chicken in a deep red marinade, cooked in a tandoor oven and served over onions and peppers on a sizzling metal plate. We also got the Butter Chicken, made of boneless tandoori chicken in a spiced tomato cream sauce; and the Rogan Josh, made with chunks of tender lamb in a mild onion gravy. Our vegetable dishes included the Mushroom Korma, made with sliced mushrooms in a surprisingly spicy sauce made with nuts. And to attest to how fresh the food here is, after we ordered the Bhindi Masala, one of the cooks went to the front of the grocery store and came back with a metal bowl full of fresh okra for our dish. The sliced okra was covered with a thick layer of chopped onions and was surprisingly spicy. Each of the entrees came with a serving of basmati rice topped with cilantro, and we also ordered a bunch of tandoori breads on the side, including the Dhaba Special Naan (filled with raisins, nuts, and coconut); the Punjabi Parantha (a layered whole wheat flatbread); and my favorite, the Keema Naan (stuffed with minced lamb). Each of the breads was freshly baked, had a perfectly chewy texture, and went great with all the different curries we ordered. They did not hold back on the spice level of anything, and the flavors were explosively delicious! We were excited to find this little restaurant in the back of a grocery store near us in El Sobrante. There was no one else sitting in there right then and we were able to squeeze in at one long table and get our very large order in and made before the kitchen closed at 2. Great of them to accommodate. We ordered probably 12 different dishes and it was the BEST Indian I've had in the East Bay -- and we've tried a lot of places. Everything delicious and well made. My favorite dish is the chicken mushroom korma with basmati rice. The services are plenty and the food is delicious! The chicken is so juicy and anything with mushrooms has my heart. We also ordered their Aloo Ghobi which is cauliflower and eggplant. That was good but they didn't mix it well and we ended up with all the potatoes at the bottom. Punjabi Kitchen is most certainly a hidden gem that serves exceptional food at the back of what appears like a convenience/grocery store. The setting is very casual yet comfortable with a bar on one side and some tables on the other side right next to the kitchen. As such the smells spill out from the kitchen creating a fragrant aroma that really does whet one's appetite. The servers here are very friendly and accommodating, recommending certain dishes and also checking in to see how our meal is going. Being here in a group of 4, we decided to order a variety of dishes such as entrees and naan. Each entree came with a bowl of basmati rice which worked out quite perfectly. They have a nice variety of naan options such as ones with onion, mint, cheese, or lamb. That being said, I enjoy dousing my naan with curries and sauces; so to be honest, I was not able to differentiate one with the other as my tastebuds were completely focused on the creamy goodness covering the naan as opposed to the naan itself. That naturally leads me on to talk about their entrees which were all exceptional. Their mushroom korma was one of my favorites, having a very creamy yogurt-esque sauce that was surprisingly spicy yet very flavorful. It paired perfectly with the cup of hot chai that I ordered. My favorite entree was their Bhindi Masala which was covered in a variety of Indian spices and a nice spicy kick to it. Especially if you like okra, that is definitely the dish to get. It's an Indian food market, that also serves limited selection of alcohol at the front of the store and beer. In the back they have a few tables and a small bar with beer on tap. Had a craving for some Indian food, and saw this as an option; seeing as I hadn't yet tried this restaurant yet, I decided to give it a go. We managed to try the following: - Saag Paneer - Chicken Tikka Masala - Garlic Naan - Cheese naan Both the saag paneer and chicken tikka masala came with a serving of rice. The saag paneer tasted delicious; it was well-pureed and almost tasted fluffy. The chicken tikka masala was a bit creamier than I'm used to, so I didn't get as much of a tomato flavor I was expecting. As for the naans, I thought that both of them were super fluffy and light, which was great. However I think both of them could have been better. The cheese naan had small bits of salty cheese dispersed within the naan, while I was expecting something like mozzarella cheese (cheese-pull, anyone?). I also thought that the garlic naan did not hold enough garlic flavor. Overall, I liked both the chicken tikka masala and the saag paneer. However, the naans I tried weren't my favorite; luckily, Punjabi Kitchen offers a really large selection of naans, so next time I can try something else! read more

I had naan which is really light and fresh. And saag paneer. That was a bit different from what I'm used to and I didn't like their style of it. But who cares when the butter chicken was to die for!!!! They also have beautiful saris for a reasonable price. I tried a couple on and am going back today to get one. Let me be another voice in the chorus- this is some of the best butter chicken I have ever had! So rich and creamy and buttery, with lots of spices and that little sweet note at the end! The lamb Korma is also amazing, so tender, as is the paneer matar. Garlic naan is light and crisp, but not burnt. Rice is perfectly cooked. I'm so glad I found this place! I moved to San Pablo a couple months ago from the city, and I was missing a good tiki masala. I tried a place closer to home but it was not good. So I found this place , it's a bit farther from my home but it's worth it! I try the chicken tiki masala today and it was everything I was expecting and more, delicious, creamy , flavors were great, the rice also amazing , and the naan bread was hot and fresh. Prices are very fair too, the guy that help me was very nice, I was waiting for my food to be ready outside and he brought it to me, very helpful. This place is in the back of a liquor store/ Indian market. I didn't flinch when the Indian woman at the front did a double take when I walked in and headed on back to pick up my order that I had door dash ordered. We had the basics, app plate with a samosa, and a few other fried treats. Mixed veggies, chicken tikka masala and aloo goobi and some naan and rice. Each dish was good. My husband wanted a little more ghee in the tikka, I thought it was fine. The naan was delicious. It's a pain to roll to Berkeley for Indian food, so this maybe our new spot in the area. I recently moved to Richmond, and previously was living in San Francisco and Berkeley which has excellent Indian food options. I recently read the Chronicle's article on "top south asian restaurants in the Bay Area" and bookmarked this place to try. I checked yelped, and was surprise with the # of reviews, but trusted the chronicle and all the positive reviews so decided to try it out. We went with our "go-to" favorites - chana saag and chicken tikka masala with garlic naan. All of this + a mango lassi for under $30 and the flavors are fantastic. When I am getting an Indian food craving, this will be my go-to spot. Also, they have an excellent beer selection of craft brews - Barebottle my favorite SF brewery and lots of sours / hazy.
