Hidden, but solid Pakistani food spot in El Sobrante. It's located in a such non-descript area, but well worth it once you find it. I love traditional Indian food, and Pakistani food is very similar....but at the same time it also has its differences. Food is very flavorful and you can taste various spices in each dish. I love Vegan N' Chicken. Living in Berkeley, I normally order from the one here, but I accidentally ordered from the one in El Sobrante, so I drove there to pick it up. The menu's the same, the recipes seem essentially the same but VN'C El Sobrante was even more on point than Berkeley normally is. If I'm out that way I would order from them again. Favorite Indian Pakistani restaurant in the area. The chef here knows what she's doing. The flavor in the eggplant dish (smokey) and the chicken karahi is so so good, get it spicy. We also frequent the aloo naan, the tandoori salmon (comes with rice) and the biriyani; I thought they had shrimp biriyani at one point and that was excellent. But not now, so we get the chicken one. It's good, not as good as the shrimp one. Online ordering system makes it easy to order and pick up (no up charges like the take out apps). Parking lot is a lil funky, no big deal. read more

A very good and local Indian cuisine restaurant in the heart of El Sobrante. On the several occasions I've been there the food has been consistently good. The curries, the naan bread, and rice are excellent. The set up is reminiscent of the old Naan and Curry in San Francisco and Berkeley where you walk in and place your order at the counter, help your self to the plates and utensils and go to a vacant table of your choosing as your food is being prepared. Also as the best part , free Chai is provided that you serve yourself as well. I ordered this for delivery a while back since I had an opportunity to get it for a low delivery fee to Berkeley. The order was correct and came in the time range that I was told it would. I got paneer tikka masala, papadum, and mango lassi. Paneer tikka masala: Salty and actually spicier than I expected. I didn't order rice or naan to go with it this time, so I had to pause a bit while I was eating it since I have low tolerance for spiciness, unfortunately. It would go well with a carb especially if you like your food spicy. Papadum: Tangier flavor than I expected, but it's great. Just have to be careful when you bite into it or break into pieces since it's hard and crisp, so it'll easily crumble and lead to little pieces flying everywhere. Alhamdulillah nice to find this low-key, delicious Pakistani restaurant. The name is kinda genius too to bring in folks looking for vegan food, but not necessarily desi/South Asian. In reality, this spot has a lot of meat items including chicken, lamb, and beef, but the name is catchy. Grateful for so many halal options in the El Sobrante/ Hercules area. Great spicy curries/gravies and naan options. Only negative was that I asked specifically if the gulab jamun were fresh, and was told they were. The Good: They have the best tandoori chicken of any place around here. I've tried them all and this is the spot to go. If it wasn't for how amazing their tandoori is, I might've gave them a lower rating. This, coming from a Desi person. Their naan and roti are delicious and the roti is whole wheat. Online ordering system is good. Very convenient and simple. The Bad: Their fried chicken is super salty. I couldn't eat more than 2. Also, if you order food in different spice levels, they don't label them. If you and friends/family get the same dish, but mild, medium and spicy. Vegan N' Chicken is my family's favorite indian spot. We love Indian food so much, so we frequently get Indian take out, but nothing compares to Vegan an' Chicken. The last time we were there (this afternoon) we ordered a bunch of things. Tandoori Fish: Just as succulent as a great salmon, this grilled fish is juicy and full of flavor. My dad loves fish, so we got this for him, and we all ended up sharing it. It was deliciously grilled. Perfect. Chicken biryani and Goat biryani: the rice was cooked perfectly and this dish was full of veggies. We ordered one chicken biryani and one goat biryani. The goat biryani was SO delicious and tender, it hardly had a gamey flavor. Garlic Naan: Imagine the softest, heartiest bread you've ever had was made into garlic bread. Yeah, I know, absolutely amazing. Plain Naan: A little crunchier and without the buttery garlic-y goodness that the garlic naan has. Still great, but I prefer the garlic naan. Paneer tikka masala: Your general paneer rolls masala, prepared to perfection. What I love about Vegan n Chicken's paneer is that it has a pleasant firmness to it. I cut it into 3 parts with my fork before eating. We also got aloo gobi and butter chicken (it was red this time which was interesting). They were both just as good. Nothing from Vegan n Chicken will disappoint you. This restaurant became a special place to my family because the food is so good but also, most importantly, the people here have great attitudes. They are excellent servers and always respond as if they are proud to be running this fantastic establishment. They deserve to be very proud. If a place bills itself as Vegan N' Chicken, then it seems only fair to try both, don't you think? I found myself in El Sobrante for the first time after taking a good walk over at Point Pinole. I didn't know anything about El Sobrante, but it appears its main artery, San Pablo Dam Road, provides the suburb's commercial lifeblood. This two-room Indian-Pakistani spot is in a nondescript strip mall right off that artery on Valley View Road which presumably would be an arteriole in this medical analogy. Hey, I'm not a cardiologist, but I have played Operation where I got the buzzer often for my aggressive surgical technique. But I digress. The place was empty of customers but fully staffed in the kitchen. After perusing their paper menu, I ordered the $9.99 Tandoori Chicken, a generous portion of two legs with thighs attached sizzling on a cast iron plate (photo: http://bit.ly/2D9Hpxr). Pretty good. A tad overcooked but that may be that I took my time taking the chicken onto my plate. Chicken? Check. It's that real "hole in the wall" which has the taste you just can't get at those uppity restaurants. Family vibes, Mom behind the counter taking orders, helping in the kitchen, and keeping an eye on the little one running around. That makes it feel like home. Do not get turned away by the exterior and interior sure it can use some love but it does not affect your experience or hinder the flavor of the food so who cares. The cooks here make great food, the flavors are rich and taste like home. Enjoy some complimentary tea before or after your meal. I'm a huge fan of the butter chicken and tandoori chicken, with garlic naan (I recommend these three if it's your first time trying Indian food). The lamb dishes are great too. This place was really good but just FYI it is not all vegan!! I was thinking it was because......I dunno....the name has vegan in it. Don't think I would have gone out of our way to try if I knew it wasn't 100% vegan. They do have lots of vegan options though. We drove about 30 minutes out just to try this place, Upon entrance two people just stared us down without a smile or greeting not even a welcome in or hi, my husband even said hi to one of them men with no response (we're guessing that was the owner...) There's nothing welcoming or great about this place to come back, not the ambiance nor the food. Our host was more interested in playing games on his phone rather than customer service. We decided to try the food based off of the good reviews. We ordered butter chicken, lamb biryani, lamb korma, onion kulcha, potato naan, and garlic naan. The only things that tasted fresh was the naans and kulcha. Other than that the butter chicken had a weird artificial taste definitely not the traditional taste of butter chicken, the chicken bits were rubbery. Lamb was dry. Both curries just tasted like it was reheated and given to us. Probably the store bought frozen curries from Safeway taste better to be honest. The biryani did not have the traditional biryani taste to it, unsure why did they put bell peppers in their biryani instead of caramelized onions. It tasted more like a fried rice rather than biryani. Also tasted reheated. Don't waste your time and money here, there are better places out there.
