I've always liked Indian food but haven't really ever had the chance to explore the cuisine, other than the occasional food truck. Now that I know about El Sobrante's hidden gem, I can explore more. I've ordered twice through DoorDash, and I will be back. The first time I ordered, I went with the lamb curry with a side of naan, and it is good - not super spicy, so I'd recommend it for a beginner, but it is maybe a little on the greasy side. Last night I decided to branch out a bit more and give the lamb biryani a try. Again, not too spicy, but definitely flavorful. [Edit to add: the menu on DoorDash says the biryani has nuts and raisins, but there were none in my meal.... that just means I'm going to have to go back again soon. Haha. The lamb was tender and the rice was a good texture. Again, I ordered naan, because it is -amazing-. I could eat it all day and still be happy to have more. Maybe someday I'll be brave enough to try the vindaloo. read more

This place is great for takeout! It's hidden in the back of a grocery/liquor store but the food is excellent. So far we've tried chicken tikka masala (best we've had since Aangan changed ownership), lamb biryani (the lamb is super tender!), Saag aloo, samosas (comes with chana on the side), and papdi chaat. This place is a hidden gem! My mother flew in from Wisconsin and demanded Indian food. We were actually in our way to the Headlands as I live in Pleasant Hill. I just randomly pulled over to see if there was any Indian food nearby and came across this place. Food was fresh and piping hot. Spices are to die for. Service was friendly and prompt. I tried this place because my boyfriend and I saw it on DoorDash and were tired of everything else so we wanted to try some Indian food! This is the first thing that popped up to click and I'm really happy we tried it. I've ordered from them several times after and I was going to tonight but sadly DoorDash said I'm too far for delivery :( idk what changed I was getting it Doordashed all the time but I can't anymore! I tried Annapurna Restaurant and bar's Chicken Tikki Masala and honestly compared to this place it was a little disappointing considering all the reviews raving about how it was the best Indian spot in the Bay Area. It's not like it wasn't good! It was but compared to Punjabi Kitchen it was subpar. The only complaint I did have with PK was that their Chicken Tikki Masala was amazing and spicy the first time! And the times after there was no spice. It'd be great if that was an option on DoorDash. I would give them zero stars if it was an option. We spent a good amount of money here on our order and after the second bite I felt something strange in my mouth that couldn't be broken down by my teeth. Just ordered our dinner from Door Dash, one item was missing completely and the other main item was the wrong item. When we called the restaurant they said they were closing , even though it is only 6:50 and they are open until 9:30 pm. They said call door dash for a refund. I woke up on a Saturday mid morning craving Butter Chicken. Literally eyes just opening and asking myself "what's for lunch?" Then bang Butter Chicken filled my mind. For not having it for awhile, I decided to Yelp it. There were several places to choose from but wanted to venture out just a little bit and read bout this unique hole in the wall grocery store/ restaurant. Read the reviews, all positive, instinct kicked in, gots to check it out. It's in a strip mall and very funky place (in a good way) when u first walk in the grocery store your smelling all the spices they sell. Very fragrant. So I walk to the back cuz that's where the restaurant is located. There are two folks, one guy eating and the other is the cook. I see and grab a menu and there is quite a selection. I find the Butter Chicken and the naan. Perfect ready to order, I'm standing and waiting to put in my order, waiting for bout a minute. The guy eating looks at me and says "if u want to order, u you you need to go to the front and the lady will take ur order. The cook only cooks and doesn't take order's." I said, oh, ok thanks. Got to the front ask the lady, that I would like to place a order of Butter Chicken, basmati rice and naan. Kept it simple. Waited less than 10 minutes and viola, paying for the food at the front of the store, food in hand and walking out the grocery. Good value, paid bout $13.00 as well. Got home, grab a bowl, filled it with fluffy basmati rice and several spoons of this luscious, velvety creamy Butter Chicken. The taste was fresh, beautiful spice blend with a little kick, chicken cooked nicely and lots of sauce to dip my naan bread. Did it hit the spot? I would would say "yes" and hit by a hammer!!! I love Indian food, but this wasn't it. I had a craving for Chicken Tikka Masala with Rice & of course some Nahn Bread. First the location was hard to find since it was located inside an Indian grocery store, not a big deal because I found it eventually. Grabbed my food & went home, the rice had a weird smell to it like a wet towel or something. Hard to explain, but I've been eating Indian food for years & this was different. Might I add I worked at an Indian restaurant for over a year & am very familiar with the food & spices. Definitely wasn't feeling the rice, the chicken was ok.. no complaints about that but just ok. The Nahn bread was really soggy & a couple of them fell apart, I've never seen this before. I do not have anything against this place but I would not go back. The food tastes great, and, even better, it's not overly salted (unlike almost every other Indian restaurant my wife and I have been to over the years). Note: If you like your Indian food fairly spicy/hot, as we do, their 'medium hot' will likely not be hot enough. Very friendly service -- I think it's a husband and wife team running the place, with him cooking and her serving and managing the store in front. The ambiance is nothing special but that's easy to overlook considering the excellent-tasting food. The place has awesome food! The best Indian food in town! We came back the next day for more! The staff are friendly, hospitable and service is fast. I really love their basmati rice which is superbly spiced. The dinners come with this awesome rice! We've had the Lamb Tikka, Butter Chicken, Kofta Kashmiri, Chana Saag and Baigan Barta so far and loved everything. This place is casual and located in the back of the store.
