Our friends decided to order in and we opted for tacos/burritos that night. I ordered the green sauce enchiladas with shredded chicken. On first bite, I was impressed. I always have to make the stop when I am in town, and I consistently tell people from all over this is the best Mexican food you can get. I always take to go, they are extremely quick with their service. This go around we ordered Chile Relleno, Enchiladas Rojas Platter (chicken), and Tacos de Papa. The chile relleno had amazing sauce, gooey cheese, and a crispy outside. The enchiladas are a classic and always consistent, the platter comes with rice and beans (sub black beans). It's been years since we came to Dona Maria and hit this place when we had some out of town friends come visit. It's not fancy decor-wise, so it's more like "let's get you good food and not get too distracted with decorations". Which is fine with us. The food was tasty and the portions generous. We had enough leftovers to have lunch for the next day. There was also enough selection that we had trouble deciding what to order. We both chose the chicken mole platter. I want to say the bay has a ton of Mexican food options, and not all of them, or even half of them, are good, but Dona Maria was able to really surprise me with how delicious the food was and their wide selection of options to pick from. Walk to the counter, place your order and sit down. They bring the food out to you. Women at the front who took my order mostly only spoke Spanish, but I was still able to place my order. Food: A friend took me here to have fajitas; I ordered the combo [chick/meat/shrimp] to experience all their flavors. Though the portion was huge (mostly the beans and rice of course), it came with only 3 tortillas which meant either not enjoy all of it wrapped up or else get charged extra. IF the dish had been real tasty, then I might not have minded the upselling but sadly, everything was overcooked and much worse, the meat was so leathery as to be almost inedible. So, heads up -- IF you come here for fajitas, THEN just go with the chicken. Also, the waitress who first came over (see below) asked if we wanted chips and salsa but when I asked if that was extra, she said it was another $3 or $4 (I forget which), i.e., trying to upsell without letting us know that was what was going on. And when I came here to write this review, I noticed the comment by Megan A. less than 2 months ago saying that (in her case, at least) "love the complimentary chips and salsa", which rankled a bit -- hey why was it free for her and not me??? Service: I asked the server who initially came over whether they charge for water (I'd read in some Yelp! reviews that some places charge for a glass of water from the tap) and she said that they do, pointing to a refrigerator with bottled water. I then asked "do you charge for a glass of water from the tap, not a bottle?" which she lacked sufficient English skills to comprehend, so she asked the lady by the register to take of our ordering. [NB: Turns out they do not charge for tapwater in a glass, FYI.] After our food came, no one asked how we're going, if we need anything, etc.. And when we'd had enough to eat and wanted to go, there was one lady handling the register and the other two were sitting at a table chatting with each other and totally ignoring the customers (i.e., us). So we had to wave and etc. to get one of them to grudgingly come by with our bill. We each had a lot left on our plates and the server brought over just *ONE* take out box, so we had to ask for another (which she then brought). No Comment. Ambience: Not great, not awful -- pretty much what one expects for a small strip-mall place, i.e., if the food and service had been up to par then I would have rated them 5-stars. read more

My husband and I went there this past weekend. I recently saw some good reviews on Next Door for recommendations in Los Gatos area, so we thought we'd try it. I'm extremely finicky when it comes to AUTHENTIC Mexican food lol, so we were being realistic that maybe I wouldn't be satisfied . My husband ordered the Camarones el Diabla and I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas . Suuuuuuper spicy for him but delicious! and my dish was excellent! Every Friday My son stops here. He is a teenager and really likes this place. The last few times a waitress name Sofia was very rude to him. He walked into my car very sad amd said the waitress was rude and give him an attitude when he didn't tip. Last friday I walked in separate from him and the attitude she gave is really bad. My family and I wanted to try a new Mexican restaurant out and my Grandma wanted Caldo de res and not many restaurants on this side of town serve it, but this place did which is why we came. When we pulled up the place looked dark on the outside, mainly because the sign was not lit up, would recommend they fix this so people know they're here! Didn't seem to be an issue though as the place was fairly busy as a few tables were filled and people came and went for togo orders. When we went inside the place was really warm since it was a cold night it was nice. Our server brought chips and salsa over quickly and took our drink order. The place takes Covid seriously and everything looked clean inside and everyone who worked here wore masks and I saw the chef wearing gloves. Someone even walked in without a mask on and they let them know they had to wear one. I appreciate the attention to safety. While you're dining inside of course a mask is not required while you're eating. I saw they had Chicken Mole on the menu which is my favorite. They scored extra points that the chicken was not on the bone which makes it easier to eat. Their rice and beans were also good! Our table also ordered a chalupa, enchiladas, sope, potato taco and Caldo de res. All the food was really good. I do wish their salsa was more spicy but it was flavorful. Holy pozole! I'm sick and sent my husband out to get me some soup. He came back with pozole from Dona Maria and have a feeling I'm going to wake up feeling better tomorrow. I've been coming to Dona Maria for around 10 years now and they have never changed! They still have all my favorites, one of them is Super CRISPY SHREDDED CHICKEN TACO!! It's juicy but crunchy and of course everything else is delicious too. The salad and sauces are hot but filled with fresh flavor and the wet burritos are big enough to split with a friend. THE BEST little spot ever! Staff is always quick and sweet. The soup is also a must, hot or cold weather- doesn't matter. I'd share a pic but I always forget once I start eating. Go go go! read more

Found this nice while in the wall Mexican restaurant. Kind of near where I go to therapy. So I arrived a bit before my time and needed a bite to eat and saw this place. I ordered their nachos because I was craving nachos and they are pretty generous with their portions here. I felt the weight of the nachos hence the grade nachos name. Lots of cheese meat and beans, good stuff. There was a little less guacamole,, but it was fine I still enjoyed it. The jalapeños were a nice touch. My father and his partner in crime introduced me to Dona Maria 10 years ago because of the Chili Rellenos. Fast forward to this week after frequenting this establishment with my buddy, I am still impressed. The Chili Colorado and Chili Verde are fantastic, Chili Rellenos are great , and the burritos are always huge and packed. The waitress that served us was friendly, had a good sense of humor, and recommended a couple of items she liked. A+ on the service we got especially because it was lunch hour. The restaurant itself is small but there are enough tables inside to satisfy a small crowd if you want to eat there or get your food to go. Either way Pro tip: The parking lot is very small and shared by a couple of other businesses so parking is scarce at peak hours. Street parking on Bascom Avenue is generally available with a small walk. (Worth it) read more
