Seriously one of the best restaurants I've eaten at, EVER. In my life! As a lifelong vegetarian, it was overwhelming to look at a menu and be able to order literally anything I wanted. I was also happy to see that, on top of that, there are lots of gluten free options--it can be kinda hard to find vegetarian AND gf at a restaurant, so that's a big bonus! I was with a group, so we tried a lot of different menu items, and everything we ordered was, like, the best thing we'd ever eaten. I dream of the soul rolls! And wouldn't be right not to order sweet tea. Andrew and his staff treated our table like we were royalty, so not only was the food incredible, we had an amazing experience, too. You can really tell the love and care that has been put into curating such an authentic, cool spot. Impeccable vibes.

I had the NC BBQ plate. Loved the cornbread and coleslaw. I wasn't a big fan of the collard greens...they tasted too chili-powder forward for me, and I thought the bbq and mac and cheese were just okay. While the food wasn't particularly my favorite, I loved how the menu had such variety. The cashier was super nice, and the service was great.

Stopped here on our way back from Greensboro, best travel break ever!!!! I had Soul Roll, which was an Eggrolls that consisted of greens, vegan chicken, and mac n cheese. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS, HANDS DOWN!!!!

Really enjoyed my visit to Pure Soul. It was my first time though I've heard a lot about it. As far as I understand, everything here is vegan. Which is awesome. It's in a small strip mall in Durham and has a small parking lot. When we went it was 1pm on a Thursday and there were a bunch of people. Between getting through the line and waiting for our food, it took about 30 minutes, so keep this in mind should you visit at a high traffic time. The space itself is funky and casual. They deliver your food in biodegradable to go containers. I had the fried CHKN sandwich and added buffalo sauce and ranch with a side of french fries. Everything was very good. The taste and consistency felt like chicken but not as heavy as a fried chicken sandwich would be, which is great! I really enjoyed my experience and I would recommend if you're looking for a good vegan place in the Triangle.

One of the best vegan restaurants I've tried. The fish fry sandwich was great as well as the Caesar side salad. I could taste the love and care this food was made with. There's vegan-friendly food served in most restaurants as an afterthought, but at Pure Soul, plants are center-stage. My nonvegan wife loved the "shrimp" po boy and Caesar salad as well. The lemonade was delicious and refreshing. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area.

One of my absolute favorite places to visit! The food is DELICIOUS! There are more than enough options and I love that no matter when I visit, there MAY be entertainment or great vendors or just a welcoming environment with friendly faces. The desserts are not my fav but almost any and everything else on the menu HITS. The Mac n and cheese, along with the soul rolls are a must try.

Honestly loved this place so much. The cornbread was AMAZING and I will be going back just for that. For being a no meat establishment, this place is honestly impressive. Everything was very good and tastes like the real deal. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the BBQ chicken was a bit difficult to eat after the first 4 or 5 bites. It's very rich and strong and I had trouble finishing it. But that also speaks to how much quantity they give you. Overall, solid place with nice vibes and good service.

This is a great place of you don't mind no meats. What we had though was pretty good. Very eclectic atmosphere which was a nice change. Staff were super friendly.

God tier vegan comfort food! My husband and I split a NC BBQ plate and some fried chicken strips and it was still way more than enough for the two of us! Everything was hot and super fresh, it only took a few minutes to get and the lady at the counter was so nice. We can't wait to come back again when we're in the area next!

I REALLY enjoyed this place. We parked on the side of the barbershop and oh man....the ambiance from the minute we stepped into this space was on point. Live plants, chill music and courteous staff created an excellent experience. My husband had the NC bbq sandwich and I had the bbq plate with kale salad, mac n cheese, and cornbread. Everything was great! My husband said he could taste the difference with real meat vs vegan, but I couldn't. I also consider myself a macaroni and cheese connoisseur and I really enjoyed the vegan mac. We are excited to go back!

If I lived in Durham I would eat here once a week. This place is restorative to your soul. The food is so delicious, they play soul music, and you can eat outdoors surrounded by greenery and color. It's a vibe for sure. I came here twice in a row on a holiday weekend and loved both of the meals I had, the Soul Bowl and a 3 side plate with cornbread, vegan mac and cheese, and collards. They have both vegan and plant based entrees. Whatever you do, get the cornbread.

My soul has been purified omg I'm at a lost for words me and my mom have been vegan 4 years and it's been a struggle in NC to find good vegan food however we went through the name changes previous with this location but the new name and owners are so amazing chikn and rice fried fish soul rolls lemonade corn bread cheesecake collard greens mac and cheese babyyyyyyy let me tell y'all I couldn't make it out the parking lot I highly recommend pure soul ‼‼ read more

Pure soul really won over my . The kale salad was amazing and I consider myself a kale connoisseur, the soul roll tasted like authentic BBQ and satisfied my every taste bud. These folks have done an amazing job of translating flavors to plant-based cooking. I bet plenty of omnivores could not tell the difference. Also, the owners are seriously committed to social responsibility and sustainable sourcing of both food and packaging material - which are just a couple of the worthwhile reasons their prices are slightly high. I've been here twice so far and both times were amazing! I've gotten the chicken sandwich twice, I've tried the BBQ sandwich, and the drumsticks! The drumsticks taste so great but the price is CRAZY. I wish I could get more drumsticks for a cheaper price, I don't get them anymore just for that reason. read more

I came with my aunt and we got a fish and rice plate with Mac and cheese and sweet potatoe fries, fried drumsticks with rice and the gluten free bbq sandwich! Everything was super good my aunt was even joking around about becoming vegan. We will definitely be planning on coming back and trying the rest of the menu. We live in the DC area and were visiting family for Memorial Day weekend. My husband and I aren't vegan but love trying vegan cuisine when we travel. One of our favorite spots is Slutty Vegan in Atlanta, GA. So we decided to check this place out, especially since I discovered that I'm distantly related to the owner (shout out to the Spaulding Family!!!). First of all, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I loved seeing all the live plants hanging everywhere. Next, the staff was extremely friendly and professional. And last but not least, the food was AMAZING! Everything we ate was flavorful and very filling. This will definitely be our new spot when we're in the area. read more

I got the Barveque Sandwich, Collard Greens, and Sweet Potato tots. The sandwich and "meat" tasted amazing, perfect texture, flavor, and one of the best vegan burgers I've had in the 3 years I've been plant-based. The collard greens were cooked really nicely and were all-around perfect. The sweet potato tots were interesting and tasted pretty good as well - not super special but no complaints! I'm glad I found this place and can't wait to try the other items on the menu!! read more

I have been dying to try this restaurant ever since I found out it existed. I ordered the Lemon Pepper Drumstix with the southern staples collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread. When ordering I assumed the cornbread came along with the meal but the waiter informed me that I had to pay for it separately. That was fine by me because cornbread went along perfectly with this meal. I didn't have to wait long for my order. My food was Devine and I literary ate every morsel crumbs and all. However, the macaroni noodles for the macaroni and cheese were brunt. I didn't feel like taking my order back because I was visiting from out of town and had other places to be. I can't say in all it was a bad experience because I will definitely go back when I'm in the mood for vegan soul food. read more

I've been going to this location for years now - it was once Soully Vegan Cafe, then more recently Soul Good. The pandemic hit and I was so afraid they were gone for good, but they're BACK and it appears with great branding. The food is awesome, it always has been! I always get the jerk "chicken" with kale greens and mac and cheese. When friends visit I always take them here, whether they're vegan or not. I'll be back as often as I can! read more

Pure Soul started by traveling NC to food festivals and charity events to spread the word about kind comfort food and to test their concept. Pure Soul boasts a diverse team and ownership, with one mission. Bring vegan soul food to Durham, NC and create a kinder future!

Meet the Business Owner: Nikolas S and Andrew J.

Nikolas Spaulding, founder & head chef, loves to create an atmosphere and space where people feel at ease. He got his start at a young age, having to become inventive at a time when there were very few vegan restaurants. Most of the recipes used at Pure Soul are family recipes, altered to be plant-based. Nik most enjoys working a recipe until it tastes just right and seeing people's faces when they try his food. Andrew Justad, co-founder and idea guy, initially went vegan to realize his health goals. As his vegan journey continued, it really stuck as he learned more about the cruel and unsustainable animal-farming practices that are the norm in today's food chain. Andrew's passion for serving his community makes him a great co-founder--he loves collaborating with local artists, musicians, chefs, and fellow vegans to host kind community events.

Not caramelized, burnt. Overall, the burger was decent, just not great like we were hoping. We sat at our table for quite some time and had a few drinks. It was busy but never too crowded. It was like they were sitting around on their granny's front porch, pouring each other cups of lemonade and sharing dipping sauces. When they left, they took all their trash as well. The food I ordered was slightly wrong (breasts instead of thighs), but the person behind the counter fixed it without complaint and even threw in another piece. The porter keeps the room clean and the napkins and utensils in order. It's just a great place to sit and have a meal. And the food is hot and cooked perfectly - just like granny!!

They make cookies, pastries, breads (pan loaf and hand-formed ones), soups, hand pies, and sandwiches. The variety is amazing. During the holiday season, they offer larger pies and have various seasonal goods to offer. But what's also wonderful is this bakery gives back to the community in many ways. During the height of the pandemic, they offered free bagged lunch to anyone who needed one. They also were (are?) part of the pilot project for Durham's guaranteed income. It looks to me that the owners/company are concerned about being good citizens of the community and that's a great thing. These days, so many companies get bought out by private equity companies. I hope this bakery continues to be locally owned and operated! (Also, generally this bakery isn't offering the very fancy European/European-ish style pastries which is fine by me. The prices are very reasonable, possibly in part because they aren't trying to make their baked goods a "high end" item. There are other good local bakeries that offer "high end" pastries, but they are also much less affordable and for my taste, too rich.)

The Po' Boy was amazing, a 10/10, with the bang bang sauce adding a perfect touch of spiciness. I honestly wanted two! The portion sizes are generous, providing great value for the money. I got a plate of 3 sides: soul mac, kale caesar salad and black eyed peas. The kale caesar salad blew me away. I don't typically like salads with a lot of dressing but this complemented the kale very nicely and the crispy chickpeas on top were perfect. So good! Loved all the options, and everything is vegan! The Hot Honey Chicken with home made pickles was AMAZING! I didn't need the other veggies served with the sandwich (lettuce, tomato, and red onion) so I wish there was a way to leave those off, they were all on the side though so it wasn't a bother, I just hate to throw away good food!
