I was meeting a friend here yesterday who's visiting from California, and when deciding on a meeting place, we realized a bunch of the Gastown coffee roaster places were closed on Sunday, so I mentioned Breka , knowing it was opened 24/7. (LOVE this!). Plus, this site is close to Waterfront Station, and my friend had a busy day planned, taking the Seabus to N.Van and doing a lot of sightseeing. So this Breka was perfect. I was there early at 10 am-ish, and from the outset, I was impressed: exposed brick wall, long counter and display case, fully stocked with the most beautiful pastries and tarts and cakes, and lovely looking sandwiches, too....Just lovely. I ordered a tea from the guy taking the orders. At the check-out, the woman working the cashier was the most unfriendly, aloof person I have ever encountered at a Breka. She was downright dour. Never looked up, never smiled, said I owed X for the tea I ordered, gave me a receipt and said I was "number 3", no "thank you" (despite my saying thanks!), nothing. She looked really unhappy and bothered to be there. (I sat at a nearby table, waiting for my number to be called. I saw her interactions with all the people behind me - and there were quite a few, as it got suddenly busy in the cafe. She was cold and unfriendly to everyone in line as she rang them all up. These are mostly tourists! Why have a dour, borderline-hostile woman at the check-out counter of a busy cafe in a touristy part of our city? I just don't get it). Anyhow, I waited 10 minutes to hear my number called, but I never heard it. I walked up to the take-out area and there was my tea, on a receipt that said "number 3". Did they call out my number? I honestly don't know. I was seated at a table a few feet from the area and listening for my number and I didn't hear it called. I was not impressed with this set-up. Not at all. My friend arrived and got a chocolate concoction which looked amazing, and he loved it, so there's that. I still love Brekas but I probably won't return to this site. Between the cold experience at the cash and the prolonged waiting for my order (a cup of tea!), and not being sure if my order number was ever called, it just all left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Overall, it was just average. We also ordered the Strawberry Pistachio Tart. The strawberries were fresh with a nice balance of sweetness, and there was a good amount of pistachio chunks. However, it lacked the layers of flavor that make a tart memorable. On the bright side, the coffee was excellent and easily my favorite part of the visit. Gary's only allows to order the fresh mango cakes up to one week ahead to ensure they have enough ripe mangos, which I admire their dedication. We ordered the 6 inch cake for 9 people (7 adults and 2 kids) and everyone got a thin to average slice. The cake is definitely prettier than the other fresh mango cakes on the market, has a lot more mangos that are perfectly ripe and sweet, there is less wipped cream, and the sponge cake is softer. The family agreed that Gary's has the best fresh mango cake but at $69 for a 6 inch cake, versus $43 for a 6 inch mango cake from Saint Germaine, a cake from Gary's is definitely a treat and for special occasions. Is Gary's worth the premium price? I think so but not everyone in my family agreed. One thing to note: Gary's do offer cake in a jar that's $8.50 each. When we went, they had a BOGO deal with the mango cake jars.
