Online website to make an appointment did not work AT ALL. Waited for a confirmation since their site says "this does NOT confirm your appt till we contact you." A day before my appt I called (was on hold super long, eventually got hung up on by accident) and they couldn't find my appt. The gal helped me make one very quick over the phone though. Their website also says they are closed/no appts Sunday Monday & Tuesday, but they are open M & T. Anyway-- staff was great though the experience wasn't great before. Was on hold for a very long time when I called, but they were able to accommodate an appt switch once we did get in touch. Nice front desk guy, vet and vet tech were all very sweet- quickly booked next appt, called us for any issues with our pet and finished everything promptly. I believe the audio was being recorded on an iPad (it's no problem), but no permission was asked beforehand, which is strange since other vets do. In conclusion-- this is a business you HAVE to call to get help, would totally recommend in person service once you are there, would return if needed. read more

The front desk girl is insulting. I asked her if she could remind my husband to book a grooming appointment when he picks the dogs up and she told me she couldn't because they have too many other tasks that they have to do in a very condescending way. Really? Isn't that their job? The groomer there is sweet, professional, and very good with the dogs but unfortunately I I will need to find another groomer because I can't get an appointment until after the first of the year, which they don't start booking yet, according to their front desk. read more

I brought my dog in for a grooming appointment that required sedation. Unfortunately, they were only able to complete a bath, nail trim, and partial trimming along her back. The grooming was not finished, and I ended up needing to pay another groomer to correct and complete the work. I was disappointed that I was charged the full amount (approximately $350) despite the grooming not being completed as expected. I had hoped there would be clearer communication beforehand about what would happen if sedation did not allow the full service to be performed. Overall, the experience did not meet my expectations, and I would have appreciated a partial adjustment to the charge given the outcome. read more

Here is our experience. For many years, Dr. Tugend saw all of our animals at another office on Main St. When he moved to Purple Paws, I hesitated because I don't live in Coronado and was a little concerned about pricing. Well, fast forward. Our dog Annie gets so sick - lethargic, the runs, won't eat, panting, etc. Dr. Tugend saw us immediately at Purple Paws. He also gave her a shot for scratching which worked amazing. About 4 days later, she started to go downhill. It was 4:00 pm on a Saturday. I just put her in the car and walked in before they closed. Dr. Paar saw her. It was the end of her Saturday and I'm sure it's been a long day. She treated all of her symptoms, explained everything very clearly, and showed a lot of concern - but keeping informed with everything Dr. Tugend did and had recommended. Within days, Annie was back to normal. Seems it might have been colitis. Also, all of the ladies that work in the office were professional, concerned and kind. I have now had Annie's records transferred there. And turns out, the prices were right in line with any other places I've been. read more

I never had a problem here before so when I thought there was a mix up with my pets meds I got pretty upset. Ended up it was just a miscommunication on my husbands part and yea I know better than to let him handle that next time. The manager wasn't in over the weekend but Vanessa called me first thing Monday and she was so warm and really listened and explained it all. Recently my husband took our dog to Purple Paws, waited an hour and no Vet ever showed up. The receptionist kept saying, "He's on his way," or "Just a moment." Finally, my husband said, "I live a block away. I'll go home and wait." They promised that if the Vet ever didshow, they would call. That call never came. So three weeks later, this week, we went back in. Our dog suffers from extreme itching and has chronic ear gunk so we needed to get back for help for her. This time the Vet came right away. However, he was gruff and seemed annoyed by us. He scolded us for not giving her Apoquel. But, our prescription had run out and we weren't able to see the Vet on March 18 to renew! He declared our dog needed three shots and promptly took her off, rudely waving me away as I tried to help, because she was so scared. Turns out she was right to be scared. Over the last two days since ur little pup has had every one of these symptoms below (except seizure, thankfully). "Side effects of *** vaccine: Allergic reactions, which may include hives, itching, or swelling of the face and paws. Vomiting. Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can cause difficulty breathing, rapid swelling, and shock. Neurological issues, such as behavioral changes." She also had massive amounts of hair loss, a degree of sudden shedding we've never seen before. But the Vet never came back to let us know this might happen and what to do about it - OR, answer the question that was central to our visit: What to do about the gunk in her ears? All we got was, "That will be $200"! $200 to make our dog desperately sick, and be rude to us. I saw while I was there that a big sign in reception asking for good reviews on Yelp... Maybe they need to think about that when delivering service. I feel very disappointed. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of choices for Vets in our area. But we will be looking for alternatives. read more

Purple Paws refused to fill a recent prescription for a special food written by another local vet. My dog had a GI tract situation and needed special food that they carry. My normal vet was out of stock and recommended Petco or a large Pet chain but I like to shop locally and I thought that by presenting the prescription, I could get some of this food locally to tide me over until I could find a supply. Because I was not a client-I was given a hard no (without a thorough explanation of the rules) I just wanted a few cans while I waited for the delivery of a larger supply. Either you care for animals or you care about making money/getting more customers. It was a really disappointing experience. read more

Recommend this place because the ZumiVet vets work here. Treatment is good and they're good to my cats but communication sucks. Showed up today with 3 cats for dental work but was told the appointment was cancelled, they called twice on the same day a month ago. No email reminders, text reminders or other calls. If you're fine with that I think they treat my pets great but I'm going to find a vet clinic that communicates better. They've texted me before for appointment reminders as well last year. read more

I really hate leaving bad reviews on local spots but I've had a couple bad encounters here and I'm finally done. I had been going to this Vet since before the new owners bought it and it turned into Purple Paws. Both my dogs continued to go here with the new owners. My senior lab had a stroke on Sunday evening. I called Monday AM right when they opened to get an apt. I told the desk girl what happened and she gave me a 2:30 Apt. like okay, to me this should be more urgent but okay I'll come in at 2:30. The desk girl calls me back at 1 to say the Dr can't make the 2:30 apt and can I come in at 4:30. Now I'm getting a bit upset bc my dogs breathing is labored. I nicely say " I need her seen sooner than later" and the girl responds snarky " I'm just calling to reschedule " I then ask if there's another Dr. I had to give solutions to fix the issue that she should of done. I go into the office at 2:30. She doesn't greet me, doesn't get up to ask at any point who I am with what dog. I get up and go check myself in. Keep in mind my dog is very sick at this point. I go into the room and meet with the vet and there's not much than can be done. The vet says he will call the next day to see how things are going. Do you think they called ? No. My dog died the day after. Which if you arnt going to call that's fine but don't say you will call. Still havnt gotten the blood results that was taken from my dog on Monday and today is Friday. Another time they didn't cut my dogs nails so I was told to come back. The Drs keep changing over. If I get another dog I'd go elsewhere. read more

Took a dog with clear gastroenteritis for few days and bloody stools just out of convenience of living in Coronado and other urgent care places being full and the guy charged 200 dollars for essentially nothing and no medical opinions being rendered. We take our dogs to spring valley clinic usually and much better quality service and actual medical opinion. This place is just a money making scheme. Couldn't get a stool sample and still charged 200 dollars for no advice and anti nausea medication Last time I would ever take my dogs there. This was the most unprofessional clinic I have ever gone to. My almost 2 year old pup recently developed a sickness leading him to not eat, drink, defecate, etc. making it extremely difficult for him to walk or even function. As he was very lethargic, we decided it was best to see a vet and this was the only place that had availability. Worst decision of my life... this place was horrible. They did absolutely nothing to help my pet, the exam took 2 minutes and vocally said "there's nothing to be concerned about" cost me 250 dollars. Ridiculous. Fast forward to 4 days later, the only difference in my dog is that he is 100x worse. I take him to a vet that was recommended to me and immediately told me multiple things that are potentially wrong with my dog. Now having him to be hospitalized, purple paws nearly caused me to lose my pet. Will never go there again. read more

The staff at purple paws is incredible! My 10 year old cat was extremely sick and they were able to take her in right away, even as a new patient. Dr. Tugend saved her life. We're three weeks out from treatment now and she is 100% better and it's like she was never sick. They're fairly priced and very knowledgeable. I'm so grateful for everyone at Purple Paws and because of them my cat is still alive and well. read more

The worst experience I've ever had at a vet. I scheduled a visit for a neutering and declined a few services. Due to the optional additional services that were declined, the vet refused to proceed with the neutering. I accepted that we weren't going to come to an agreement however the vet wanted to charge me a cancelation fee. I declined that because I personally wasn't canceling. The vet was. The vet then decided to call me and bully me over the phone. Stating that she has a medical degree and knows more than me and how much better she is than me. At that point I decided that I'm never returning to this vet again. Please be safe if you choose to come here. They are very unprofessional and don't help to reach any type of solutions. read more

If your dog has medical needs beyond a simple check up, please do not go to Purple Paws. We first went there a few months ago for a check up for our dog. Everything was fine, vet was very nice. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, our dog was short of breath at night and we were very concerned and so Purple Paws got her in quickly. That was great! We were told our dog is likely in heart failure, we needed to act quickly, so we were scheduled with a cardiologist for some tests a few days later. We brought her in to see the cardiologist and to have PP do a chest x ray. We paid nearly $1K (including being charged an errant overnight boarding fee - they did refund this). After paying, we asked what the vet said and we were told that someone would read the cardiology report within a few days. We asked what the xray showed, and we were told they didn't have it. We asked if we could see the results from the cardiologist, they said they didn't have them. We again asked what the vet had to say, they said nothing, we just are just the liaison between the cardiologist and the patient (we found out a few days later, they didn't actually have a vet there that day...). (SIDE NOTE: Perhaps the most distressing part of this whole story - while in Purple Paws there were three employees in the waiting area. There was also a women, sitting in a chair, holding her dog and SOBBING. No one paid her any attention). 24 hours later, still nothing. However, after my husband called, they forwarded him the x-rays (which they initially said they did not have). 48 hours, still nothing. 72 hours later - Purple Paws forwards a report from the cardiologist. An email at about 5pm on a Thursday. It is full of recommendations for medication, further testing, and instructions about when to go to the ER (which, we now know, Purple Paws should have sent her to the ER). Friday morning early we email back asking about a treatment plan, if they are going to prescribe medicine. No response. We took her to VCA animal hospital on Saturday. She is now on medication and beginning to stabilize. On Monday evening we got an email from the vet at Purple Paws. That would have been too long to wait for meds. Last thing (somewhat minor, but it all adds up), picture is of her abraded leg after they shaved it (and I don't know if Purple Paws or the cardiologist did that, but either way, not great....). So please, for everyday needs, I think they're fine. Anything else, I'd go elsewhere. read more

We came to Purple Paws Pet Clinic unexpectedly when our six month old French Bulldog was bit at Coronado Dog Beach by a Pitbull. At first we were directed by other dog owners to go to their vet on the Island but they were unable to see our dog because they were with another client. That vet recommended Purple Paws Pet Clinic. We called Purple Paws in route and they said they could see our dog immediately. When we arrived they took our dog right into see the doctor while we provided information to the office staff. The staff provided us updates on his care and were very sympathetic to our situation. Once they had provided an examination and diagnosis, they went over the medication and cost of medication with us. The doctor came into the lobby to meet with us and discuss our concerns, and answered all our questions. She and her staff were very reassuring, and appeared to care about our Frenchie and our well-being (we were in shock from our dog being bit). While in the lobby waiting, we were offered water, tea, and coffee by the two owners of the establishment. The clinic is very clean and had air conditioning. After discharge they provided us a sweet keychain that says "the road to my heart is paved with paws" and information for emergency veterinarian care shall it be needed. Really excellent customer service and care! We just moved to downtown San Diego five days ago and by default did not have a veterinarian clinic yet. We will be back to Purple Paws. Stay far far far away from this place! Run if you can far far far away. I took my dog in for emergency care because she was bleeding profusely from her rear. The Vet didn't really know the problem, however, took action to try and stem the flow of blood. Nothing worked, not a thing. I was told by the Vet after the was there for 3 hours getting an IV that my dog may not make it through the night. I stood there while they talked and worked up my bill, went over it and i as told it was $1100+, however, that amount would cover both days as they wanted her back in the next day. Well my dog did pass away that night. I returned in the morning with my now dead dog. They said they would take care of her she call me later on in the day, which i would assume would be a partial refund for no service for the second day. Nope they said they were keeping it all, that the $1100+ was just one day. I did not get the invoice when I left and on was not offered as my dog that was still alive had to be wrapped to stop the bleeding and carried to the car. My bad i should have gotten the invoice, but hey my dog was dying. Yet, I stood there with my girlfriend who also heard the cost was for both days. To add insult to injury they told me it would be an additional $85 to have the dog cremated. I would tell you to please please find another vet, this one will rip you off and not bat an eye doing so. read more

I'm honestly shocked at how my appointment went as someone who works in the veterinary field. My family and I decided to go to Purple Paws since they were available within the week, however, it was definitely a mistake. It was clear that my pet's records were not well looked over by both the technician AND the doctor prior to entering the room. My pet is *extremely* allergic to the Rabies vaccine. When it was explained to the doctor why we were not willing to give her the vaccine, he responded with, "Well what are we going to do then? She HAS to have the vaccine. She HAS to have it". I was not going to risk my senior pet suffocating, no matter how much it was uncomfortably pressured to do so. There was a growth under her toenail that I wanted to have looked at and, without my consent, the doctor came back and said that he had removed the growth. Later on, I rechecked her paw and the growth had clearly not been removed despite being charged for it. After the worst appointment I'd experienced, my pets demeanor brought me to tears. She hid herself in the car, wrapped up in a ball, and shaking. I was disheartened. Between the unprofessional behavior of the doctor pressuring me to do something I did not want to do, the unnecessary anxiety my pet went through, and the unneeded charges, my family and I will in no way be returning. read more

I am not from the area but chose to take my babies to this vet because of all the recommendations from others in the area. We had a great experience with the woman vet and she was very attentive and caring to our babies needs. A year ago we saw Robert Tugend for our 12 year old pointer for her skin allergies and I told my husband immediately I didn't care for him or his lack of empathy towards my dogs needs. Fast forward to this year, two weeks ago I brought my cat in and told them something was wrong and Dr. Tugend dismissed everything I said and told me my cat was fine. I had to ask for him to check his lungs and heart, again he said my baby was fine. The next day I had work and had to have my husband take him back in because something was still wrong. They did blood work and everything came back normal. Not once was X-rays offered or suggested to see if there was something else going on. My husband told me he handled our baby very aggressively to the point of telling the vet to be nicer on handling him. 11/11/24 we lost our sweet boy to a heart defect that could've been found at the time of bringing him to this vet. I do not recommend taking you baby here especially if the vet is Robert Tugend. read more

Every time I bring my dog here there is some extra expense. I won't be going back. The time before this they wanted to charge extra for my dogs allergy shot. They said there was a new charge because they check his vitals. This time they told me I needed my six pound dog to get a rabies shot before he could get his allergy shot. I told them I did not want my dog getting a rabies shot because he is old and not doing that well. They said he would need an exam. I called my dogs old vet who said he can come in for allergy shot. No rabies shot needed. I have changed my review to 1 star. Yes, my dog has had a rabies shot before. He has been to your veterinarian many times. He is just old and the only reason you want him to have a rabies shot is to have me spend more. All he needed was a allergy shot. There is nothing for us to discuss. read more

We found Purple Paws through a Google search, after calling around to a few different vets in our area we decided to go with them for our pups dental care. They had a $350 cleaning special which was a lot better price than what our pups regular vet charges, so that was definitely a plus. We arrived for our initial exam, blood work, etc and were thoroughly satisfied with the care and attention we received from the staff and most importantly the vet. After they did the exam we talked about our options based on what the vet recommended and decided to proceed with a full dental cleaning and likely teeth extractions. They did the blood work that same day and we waited 24 hours for the results, everything came back clear. The next morning we were scheduled to bring our boy in for his cleaning, staff was friendly and reassuring to a couple of teary eyed, nervous parents. They gave us a full break down of the charges and explained everything thoroughly. We left our boy at 9am, Dr. McCally called at 11am stating she had finished the cleaning and taken xrays she gave her recommendation that our pup needed 8 teeth be removed, we agreed and she did just that. Once we got the call that everything went well and we could pick up our boy at 4pm we were anxious to see our little one. Arrived to pick up our boy at 4pm and they gave us his extracted teeth, medication, and copy of his xrays. Our boy was awake and alert and looked more handsome than ever! We had nothing but a pleasant experience with the Purple Paws team and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for professional and reliable vets. Tough situation as we were on the island several months ago with our nearly 15 year old dog Wendy for what was her last trip. My brother has a house that is a 5 minute walk to dog beach. Wendy loved it there and we had many good times watching her explore off-leash & run around a bit. She didn't have much energy and we spent a couple days taking her in a wagon with sand tires. She would lay with her head over the side and take in the salt air. On her final day with us we spoke to our Vet in Phoenix and made the hard decision to take her somewhere in the area to say goodbye. Since his only contact was out of the country we relied upon Yelp reviews and took Wendy to Purple Paws. I carried her in and the staff immediately brought us into an examination room. While they were preparing my sweet little girl decided she was ready and she took her last breath in my arms before they got organized. It was heartbreaking to lose her. Both my Vet, Dr. Cellers, and the folks at Purple Paws were supportive and nice. I was more than a bit dazed and honestly haven't been able to write this review for months (even now it hurts). I guess what I'd like you to get from this review is an idea of the sensitivity to your feelings and needs the team and Purple Paws exhibit. I am confident that their gentle and kind treatment of me and Wendy in a horrible situation defines the way they treat folks and their beloved pets under more normal circumstances. read more
