We arrived and we're promised the next table. We sat outside and I informed the staff. The table wasn't cleaned, the menus didn't arrive. After complaining we got what looked like a used salsa cup from another table and chips. No menus. Meanwhile, three other tables were filled and people had menus, drinks, and a clean table. The place is really nice a whole in the wall. The waitress was really nice and friendly. They have lunch specials on the weekend from 11-3. We had 2 quesadilla chicken and chunk beef. This place is in my friend's neighborhood so we decided to check it out for lunch. They have about 10 tables and booths, so it's pretty small. They have fajitas, tacos, Mexican specialty dishes, flautas, etc. I tried the Carnitas pork Taco which was tasty. You have a choice of wheat or corn tortillas. Several friends went to Quates (Spanish for "buddies") for the Cinco de Mayo celebration....there were about 30 of us and the owners, put together a dance and music event for the evening. Our waiter Lorenzo was a hard working guy helping everyone in the most timely manner. He had two other helpers which made the serving process very smooth. They served nice homemade chips with salsa (regular and spicy-not too spicy) to the tables and they were addictive...I had the steak fajita bowl and all three parts of it...the rice, the black beans and the steak were all done very well. Some of my friends got the enchiladas and the tacos and they raved about them as well. They have many types of nacho platters, so that's what's next for me to try...I love nachos and I will definitely be back for them..... Unfortunately, last night I ordered the flautas, which tasted like pure grease and were inedible. I ended up throwing them in the garbage after two bites. Planning a night out as a pre-celebration party for the Yelpies, my friend and I meant to eat dinner somewhere else but when we arrived it was so small and crowded and there was no place to sit. We felt so uncomfortable that we decided to find somewhere else to go. I am so glad she found Quates. I was tired and hungry and this was exactly what I needed. To begin with the place was empty except for us so it was like we had our own private dining room. It was perfect for because this restaurant is small, only 6 or 7 tables at most. You can't get more Covid safe than being the only ones dining in. Although we remained the only diners people came in and out to pick up take out. When we walked in we were warmly greeted and while we checked out the menu were brought fresh complimentary chips with mild and spicy salsa. The menu was huge and it had all of the traditional Tex-Mex favorites you would expect to find, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and fajitas. The other thing I noticed that the prices were very reasonable. It was freezing out so we we started with two soul restoring cups of chicken soup. Pipping hot, the flavorful broth was filled with chunks of vegetables and shreds of chicken. For dinner we both picked fajitas. For $14 I couldn't resist the steak. A few moments after we finished our soup we were presented with our steaming meat plates. The marinade was full of flavor and I loved how the peppers and onions were still crisp yet tender. We decided to complete the night with the splurge of fried ice cream. A scoop of vanilla was rolled in sweet cornflakes and topped with caramel, chocolate, whipped cream, and a cherry. I didn't think I would be able to eat very much but it was so good I couldn't stop. I happily pigged out on everything placed in front of me. All of that food plus a Corona was only $26. I asked our waiter how long they had been in business and he said he thought 3 years. He also recommended trying the tacos next time According to the restaurants website the kitchen is run by Chef Jose Oscar Villatoro who has over 20 years of experience. Warm service coupled with delicious and inexpensive food makes this place a winner. Come out and support this great Mexican Restaurant. 5-star service, 4-star food, 4-star ambience. Terrific Mexican place in a neighborhood with a lot of competition for the best comida Mexicana. Alegria Tacos just down the way wins for tacos, these folks win for fajitas. We went during the height of coronavirus the first few days that restaurants were open. The service was gracious with a sweetness and courtesy you don't often get outside Mexico itself. They were a bit crowded, so the cashier/head waiter suggested we get take out and just wait for it in the car. He said they'd bring it out to us AND it was raining. A nice man walked out in a downpour and shielded the car window with his umbrella to hand us our food. SIX stars and a helluva tip on that. A good while back this was an insurance / title company office, then a different Mexican restaurant. It has a new brighter paint job now and a second life as a much better Mexican cafe. It's a little forlorn looking outside though, in a slightly barren stretch. They've recruited from some of the other Mexican restaurants in the area for great chefs and waitstaff. My fajitas were the best I've had in a long time. Sizzling still in the container (could hear it over the rain), and just as good in the car as out of a skillet on a restaurant table. In college I won a year-long discount from a Mexican restaurant by yelling my favorite Mexican food word the loudest (it was fa-HEEEE-taaaa! screamed out during their parking lot festival). This is a book you should NOT judge by its cover! From the outside, not impressive. But worth your time! Inside there are only about 6 or 7 tables, so I'd imagine it gets crazy on taco tuesdays and weekends. We happened to catch the last table on a Sunday night. The menu is massive, so it's worth looking up online before you go. But even if you take some time to peruse, the complimentary chips and salsa will keep you company. Prices are good! The margarita was only $6.50 and was a good size. Not super strong, but tasted good! I got the Grande Burro and my friend got the fajitas. Both came fairly quickly. The quality was about the same as a fast casual Mexican restaurant. Tough to mess up beans and rice, but it was tasty and satisfied the craving! The guac was especially yummy! Service was ok. We had to ask for just about everything- water, napkins, refills, the bill. When asked, everything was delivered promptly, but I would hope a server could see that we did not have napkins, and waters should just be delivered automatically. I don't know what happened. Where did the Quates we love go to? On our recent visit, it just wasn't the same, delicious food we were familiar with. Everything was bland, even the tortilla chips were off. The salsa was ok. My friend had a mexican dish - enchiladas, which should have been zesty and flavorful, but were bland and tasteless, with underseasoned refried beans. A dish I have had there before, picadillo, was dry and flavorless. Think of cooked ground beef with no seasoning and drained of its juices. My adding the extra salsa, salt and pepper helped a bit with the flavor. Service was rushed and soup, plates were whisked away. I hadn't finished my soup and it was gone before I knew it. Maybe new owners? Maybe a new chef? I will wait a few months before trying Quates again. I hope it improves. read more

This place is across the street from Alegria Tacos and we tried Alegria on a Friday and Quates Mexican Restaurant on Saturday. Both days were rainy perfect days to order to go tacos and go home and play board games. If your interested you can read my review of Alegria Tacos and than make your decision. This place has its own parking lot and is in a more visible spot. Alegria if you blink you will miss it. The dining area is bigger with I think 3 booths and 3 tables opposite side, two tables with a small bar area by the register. A tv to watch games and you can see part of the kitchen from the table area. The service was very friendly here as well. Kind. The lunch menu here is served Monday the Friday from 11-4 and they are opened until 10:30pm. Perfect to eat at after a movie I suppose. The tacos here were very good but a noticeable taste difference in the texture. I am not sure but I would wager that the meat is boiled than sautéed. The corn tortillas were not grilled here. That makes a big difference in taste and texture. The refried beans I would also wager came from a can. I can't explain other than you just know the look,taste and consistency of homemade beans. Even by the way they get cold. Alegria were undeniably home made. The rice was like Alegria not bad but missing seasoning and spice and flavor. Just so so for me. The tacos here were good as well just made different but good. The lime and cilantro and pico all were fresh as well. No tamales here. I ordered the queso dip with hot salsa. Chips were fresh. Queso was cheddar in color and had really good taste. My husband ordered the #8 off the lunch menu. The picadillo for $7.50. He liked it a lot. Came with white rice, plantains, black beans, olives in the meat. He said it was flavorful and worth the price. I ordered the carne asada a la tampiguena and it came with a cheese enchilada which was just a mixture of yellow and white cheese. It was ok. If it would have been a quick broiled in the oven it would have been so much tastier since it was nothing but cheese. The steak they did ask how I wanted it and I sad Medium but it was closer to Well. A little tough but had good flavor and I paid extra for grilled tomatoes and onions. My choice winner and only my opinion is Alegria tacos. The flavor of the grilled steak and chicken and tortillas just has the edge to win for me. Both are in the same price range. Both has very kind courteous servers. Both are clean. Quates has a bigger parking lot and dining area but I think personally for me I will deal with the hassle of the other parking lot and small dining area for a better street taco. Great food, fantastic service, all of the staff are kind and professional. Clean, cozy, and welcoming atmosphere. Very kid friendly. My family has been coming here for years. It's a hidden gem. The chicken soup is a family favorite, we order it for takeout every time we are not feeling well. It is the cure! And has inspired the way I now make my homemade chicken soup. The Pollo la Plancha is fabulous, my picky daughter loves their grilled chicken, always fresh, tender, juicy and full of flavor. The Mexican pizza, tacos, taco salad, and burritos are always a hit. It was Taco Tuesday and we were bored of the same routine. So we ventured out to this small and cozy Tex-Mex restaurant in Oakland Park, FL. This place is truly a hidden gem! While quaint and small it does offer an array of menu choices, although we were disappointed there were no taco Tuesday specials. We opted for our go to Mexican classics which is the chicken chimichanga for me and the steak burro for my hubby. Chicken- the chicken is shredded and full of flavorful juices. My meal came accompanied by sour cream and guacamole (yummm!) the flour tortilla was golden crisped and was the perfect balance to the chicken filling. The portion is huge! It also comes with a generous serving of rice and refried beans. Steak- I only stole a forkful from my hubby's plate to taste it and the quality of the steak was tender, juicy and flavorful! He said how impressed he was with his dish. Chips and salsa- the chips are nice and crispy and not oily nor too salty. They come with two types of salsa a mild one and a spicy one. I tasted the spicy one but didn't notice too much of kick in it. I did find that the mild one packed a punch of fresh cilantro, tomato and onion flavors which were delicious. Service-once we walked in we were greeted by two staff members that were very friendly. They were attentive during our ordering process and when they brought the food. Safety- Due to COVID we try to be extra cautious in the places we visit and I was happy to see this place adhering to safety guidelines. Their menus were not paper menus but I didn't notice they were wiped down after every use. Found the spot as I was heading home and glad to have stopped by. Ordered their Grilled Fish Tacos with corn tortillas, refritos and rice. I didn't realize they packed my food to go but fine by me. Let me say these are the best fish tacos I've ever had!! I lived in TX before and Mexican food is one of my favs, but fish tacos most everywhere are done fried- hard pass for me. But here, they mainly do them grilled!! Pleasant surprise and gosh were they just tastyyy... The rice and refried beans were also great, very flavorful and a reasonable serving size. A few weeks later I found myself thinking about these tacos again and ordered them for pick up a second time. Had trouble ordering on the phone because the person wasn't understanding what I was trying to order or how to take my order so the second time around he charged me the tacos at the same rate and never included the rice and refried beans. That was frustrating because I only noticed after already arriving back home. I called and spoke with the manager, it seems the guy was covering the phone briefly and didn't know how to notate orders based on the system they have. My receipt for that transaction he literally put that I'd ordered without the rice and refried beans, when I was explicit in saying several times to include it. Again, he got confused somehow. We go here for lunch and they have quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos, tacos, rice and beans, Mexican pizza, ect. There is definitely something to eat for everyone - vegetarians included! The fajitas are a nice portion and come with the tortillas, sour cream, guac and onions/peppers. Do not judge this place by what it looks like outside because inside there is great food and service. Quates Mexican Restaurant is the most recent Mexican restaurant to occupy the 3701 N. Andrews location, formerly the location of Burrito Station. The décor, atmosphere and general setup remains the same, but thank goodness the emphasis upon burritos is gone. I say thank goodness because burritos aren't even a Mexican food, but actually a Tex-Mex food not even known in Mexico outside of the State of Guanajuato. In fact if you order a burrito in Mexico they might think that you are asking to eat their burro or donkey. Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised by the meal and service I had at Quates. The menu provides all sorts of choices and while I ate I had a view of the chef at work and was really impressed by his attention to the details of cleanliness in that he was continually changing latex gloves in order not to contaminate one food with another. For my meal I ordered their "Mexican Steak," $16.00, which turned out to be a generous size cut of top sirloin, grilled rare per my request, covered with sautéed onions, tomatoes, a really delicious sauce and accompanied by yellow rice and refried beans. Indeed it turned out to be one of the better of these steak preparations I've had. read more

Dropped by on a Sunday for lunch. We were looking for Mexican food that could please both a Tex-Mex lover and an authentic Mexican lover. This place seemed to fit the bill. Quates is its own stand-alone restaurant (looks like maybe the building used to be a small fast food establishment?) with its own parking lot. It was easy to find and looks clean inside-out. Staff was friendly, food was prompt, and all questions and menu changes were addressed appropriately. Chips and salsa for every table. The menu is kind of huge; almost overwhelming. There's not just Mexican items either; there's a variety of Latin dishes, which I was really only happy about because they had tostones (twice-fried plantains on the menu). I had black beans to start (not pictured) and they had a nice flavor to them (not just a can of black beans in a bowl). For my entree I ordered the fish tacos, Mexican style, which I wasn't entirely sure what they meant. Anyway, the tacos were served on corn tortillas (the only way tacos should be served, imo), with tomato, onions, cilantro, lettuce, and crema (?). The platter came with a side of refried beans and yellow rice. Everything was delicious! I also ordered a side of tostones, which were good, but I prefer mine thinner and crispier. These came with a side of salsa (same salsa that's served with the chips). It was just your standard salsa that a lot of Mexican places have, but it was good. Good place. I'd go again. read more
