    Salmon and Shrimp Bento Box
    Gwen S.

I sat outside the restaurant and placed my order for salmon and shrimp bento box. Guy told me 10 minutes it would be ready. I waited about 15 minutes or so and my food was already bagged and on the counter. My food was awful! The salmon has scales (see pic), the veggies were crunchy and had this weird aftertaste and the rice was in clumps! The rolls, spring roll and dumplings were edible but the rest was a waste. I've been to this place a few times for sushi, my first time trying the rest.

I ordered 2 types of bento boxes for carryout: Beef & Shrimp and Salmon & Shrimp. They don't give you soy sauce or wasabi. You have to ask for them. The Beef & Shrimp bento box had grilled beef, grilled shrimp, vegetables, noodles, 2 chicken dumplings, 2 spring rolls, 4 pieces of California roll sushi. You can get rice instead of noodles. The sauce on the beef was slightly sweet with a touch of soy sauce and that's pretty much it. The blandest sauce that I have ever tasted. The beef was tender and moist.    The shrimp was just grilled, no seasoning added. It was cooked firm and tender. A little seasoning would have helped.    The vegetables were blanched and that was it. Plain cooked vegetables. Unbelievable.    The noodles had some soy sauce and black pepper mixed into it. It was pretty bland. At least it was cooked properly.    The chicken dumplings had a thick wrapper. Too thick which made it chewy. The filling was sparse and bland. When something is bland, it's good that it's sparse. There was no dumpling sauce. However, there was a small container of Yummy sauce. It tasted like mayonnaise mixed with French dressing. Not yummy.    The spring rolls had a good crispy wrap. The filling was plain cabbage with a very small amount of seasoning. There wasn't much filling, thank goodness.    The California rolls were okay. They tasted like the typical kind you can buy at a grocery store. It had rice, fake crabmeat, seaweed, cucumber and avocado. There was no wasabi or soy sauce. Luckily, I have my own.    The Salmon & Shrimp bento box had the same things as the Beef & Shrimp bento box except it had salmon instead of beef and white rice instead of noodles. The salmon was grilled and covered with a sweet teriyaki glaze. The salmon was tender and a little dry. The glaze was too sweet. The rice was typical in every way.    The service was not good. I had paid online at Grubhub, so I thought that the pickup would be quick. I tell the employee my name and show him my order on Grubhub. He tells me, "Where is receipt? No receipt, no food." I  look on my phone to find the page which shows that it was paid. The employee had started serving the customer who was behind me. I had to wait awhile. He finally gets back to me after walking away to do something in the back area. I show him the receipt on my phone. He looked at his cash register display and pushed some buttons. After staring at it for awhile, he said, "You have to pay." I glared at him and said, " I paid for it already!"  He gave me my food. Employees come and go, so the food is more important. The lack of flavor is the problem here. Nothing was outstanding. It was memorable in a bad way. Don't bother coming here unless the food improves a lot.

The employee who took my order was very nice. They charge roughly a dollar extra for noodles instead of rice. This is the first location I have been to where the spicy teriyaki isn't spicy at all. In fact, it was so mild and sweet that when I took a bite, I immediately walked back in the store and told them it wasn't spicy. They informed me that it was "mild " ... well, I have been to this chain in various parts of the country and I can honestly tell you I have never tasted spicy that had such little spice. The vibes inside are... OK. There was an unhoused person high out of his mind standing outside when I pulled up. The inside was clean but basic. Very much a grab and go kind of spot, but there are tables if you really feel inclined to sit down. Food is meh.

The layout is interesting -- there's an upstairs when you walk in, but the sushi bar and a good bit of seating are downstairs. The menu is pretty straightforward with a mix of hand rolls, appetizers, specialty rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and traditional rolls. They also have a few solid combo deals, though I usually prefer trying a variety of items instead. Service was quick, which is always appreciated at a sushi spot. We ordered a few specialty rolls, two traditional rolls, and a couple orders of sashimi, all served together on one platter. The rolls were a great size -- filling without being overly large. The sashimi was fresh, and the traditional rolls really balanced out the meal nicely. The flounder and tuna sashimi were both excellent, and the California roll made with real crab was simple, fresh, and really satisfying. The total came out somewhere in the $70 range, so after tip and splitting it between two people, it was about $40 each to try multiple rolls and sashimi. Definitely fair pricing for the quality and amount of food. This spot had been on my list for a while, so I'm glad I finally made it over. I'd recommend checking out the menu beforehand so you can go in with a game plan and try the items that stand out most to you.

I have been to many sushi restaurants that are high end and more affordable, but Oya is the best of both worlds. The quality and creativity in each dish is far out of the league of what you pay. The restaurant is on the smaller end, but the lighting, decor, and cleanliness is absolutely stellar! What I love is that the interior compliments the fresh and clean taste of the fish. Attention to detail in how everything is presented and plated shows the amount of care that the chef has for their customers. Additionally, they do not hold back on the things that matter. I chose to eat various dishes of fish, which require a lot of ginger to cleanse my palette after each fish, and Oya did not hold back. Where many other sushi restaurants lack, Oya dominates at. Service was absolutely amazing as well. The chefs were extremely respectful greeting you and the server was ready for whatever need you may have. More than supporting big chains that profit off of you by overstuffing you with a lot of rice and cheap fishy fish, I would HIGHLY recommend supporting a small business. Oya Sushi is one of the handful of restaurants that I wish I could exceed five stars. Everything about this place exceeded all expectations and I could not recommend this place more than any other sushi restaurant I have been to. It is a different type of love when you want to go around to all your friends, family, and co-workers to one day take them to a restaurant. Oya is a MUST eat when in Maryland.
