Quill is located inside The Jefferson hotel, make sure you make a right and go down the hallway to get to the bar. Don't make the mistake we made and go left and almost crash an event (not sure how we made it as far as we did without anyone questioning the two lost souls). My expectations were met when we arrived at the bar. It was a dark, quiet, and intimate bar. The service was great, and the menu was intricate. We ordered crafted cocktails. We were served some nuts and olives to accompany our drinks. It was a neat touch, especially if you're ordering several drinks, to cleanse your palate before the next. The Jefferson Hotel's Bar & Lounge is solidly good. The decor is heavy dark wood & brass which lends a cozy, private feel to it. It's not very big area. There was some mused softly piped in over the speakers. Overall the service was outstanding. Rachel was the bartender & my server. She was phenomenal. Pleasant, friendly, polite, attentive & efficient, Chanel, the bar Mgr, stopped by twice yo check on me. She was phenomenal also. I had the veal schnitzel & it was not very good which was unfortunate. It was on the greasy side & it actually almost looked like a piece of chicken fried steak. I am not a fan of the lingonberry jam. The fried capers were not very piquant or savory so it added no contrast to the veal. The fries were also greasy & were mostly end pieces which was also disappointing. I would go back to this place for drinks & try other more standard items like the burger or Cobb salad. I loved this place. My husband and I wanted a fancy drink before dinner at Little Pearl when we were in DC. Quill is inside The Jefferson hotel, quiet classy and well styled. Their liquor selection was top notch and the bartender was friendly and VERY knowledgeable about DC (and San Diego actually, having lived there too). I love a bar with bar snacks and they gave us nice olives and a bar mix of nuts. Nothing crazy but enough to take the hunger down before our later reservation. The Quill is a great cocktail bar inside the Jefferson Hotel (Oh man, the Quill? I just got that joke!) just up the road from Obama's house. They serve up some great drinks, including an awesome bloody mary. Bartender Jason Swaringen submitted the Quill's bloody recipe to a Thrillist contest and added a garnish of lump crabmeat to spruce it up, creating the tickled crab bloody mary. The usual fair doesn't come with the ice cube full of crab, but the people at Quill are happy to oblige if requested. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for quick drinks before our dinner reservation on a Sunday evening. I had the Gila Monster, which was a deliciously spicy and sweet tequila drink. Looking for a cigar friendly place not far from dinner (see my review of Plume, also in the Jefferson Hotel). I saw a mention on Yelp, but it was from a few years ago. I contacted Quill through Yelp. Quill confirmed cigar smoking was allowed on the patio, cigars were available for purchase or one could bring their own. I was February, very cold, and the staff rolled over an extra heater. Oh, and a robust selection of serious brown liquors to go with the cigars. The garage adjacent the hotel at 1615 M Street is open until midnight. read more

Oh.my.goodness! Quill saved our Saturday night dinner plans. What an exceptional place! After being completely mistreated somewhere that shall remain unnamed, we made our way here and it will forever be placed as one of my favorite spots in DC. I cannot begin to tell you how much I loved everything. We were hungry so we ordered several plates to share. Don't sleep on that grilled cheese and tomato soup! Like, wow! Almost everything deserves a 10/10. The truffle Mac fell a little short but it's all good. This is an amazing spot to drink and people watch! Very relaxing and intimate. People from intriguing walks of life gathered around the piano player singing and dancing as he crooned old classics. Happy couples, miserable couples, quiet and complex couples can be found here. We initially had a female server who was great but they sent her home without a goodbye and we were then graced by I think his name was Kevin? As much as I love the bar and have fond memories at Quill, I can no longer confidently recommend Quill as an imbibing destination in DC, simply because the employees are quite partial and clearly favorite certain customers - particularly in regards to seating - which, in my experience, is simply not fair or proper etiquette in a bar/lounge setting. Finally made it out to Quill and completed my trifecta of Jefferson Hotel gastronomical establishments! I tried the Island Hopper and the Under the Mistletoe. Both were delicious but the Island Hopper was hands down my favorite. Perhaps it's because I'm new to the cocktails served warm concept, but it was such a pleasant surprise and the perfect libation for this time of year. As far as food, we had the oysters and the crab cakes. The oysters were some of the best I've had in DC, definitely recommend! The gf and I brought a group of cocktail loving friends to Quill for drinks. The two-room bar is divided into two different but equally well-appointed spaces. The front area is a quaint lounge outfitted with a grand piano. We were there early on a Saturday evening likely before the live music started. The second room houses the actual bar, which was all wood, modern with an art deco feel, dimly lit but the backlit bottles of fine spirits were immediate eye-grabbers. I started off with the Bitter and Boozy made with Gosling's Black Rum, cognac, and Averna amaro. It was bitter and boozy, yet exceedingly well balanced, and very satisfying. For my second round, I had my favorite standby (and acid test for a good bar), a Sazerac. My drink was made flawlessly. I didn't see how he made my drink, but without a doubt, it was the best Sazerac I've had outside of New Orleans and certainly the best rendition in DC. Drinks at Quill are pricey at $15 a pop, but I felt like I got what I paid for. Despite our group's size, approx. 15 people, the two bartenders efficiently made our group's cocktail orders maintaining their friendly, professional demeanor throughout the night. If you're looking for a well-made drink or a glass of a top shelf spirit, neat, in a seriously classy setting, then look no further. Quill in the Jefferson Hotel is for you. read more

I could tell you about the space: bordering on opulent, this elegantly restrained interior is very much hush-hush DC. Need to tell a cohort a secret? Come here. Want to get rowdy? Please don't. I could tell you about the gratis bar snacks: pickled vegetables (white asparagus!) and bright green olives and plenty of mixed nuts. I could tell you about the staff: buttoned up, happy to serve. If you have a question, any question, they will endeavor to answer it. Even if it requires research. Trust. But it all really comes down to the: Americano. Perfect. Quill is definitely my favorite go-to bar in my neighborhood. It's such a quiet and upscale little hidden gem inside the Jefferson Hotel. Most people walking by 16th Street won't even notice it, even though there's an outdoor patio right there. The cocktail menu features seasonal drinks all year long, and Peter plays the piano five nights a week (Tuesdays through Saturdays) from 9 to midnight. The ambiance is relaxed yet elevated. On a breezy summer night your heart feels content sitting on the patio and sipping a cocktail, somewhat secluded behind the bushes but still feeling very much in the heart of a bustling city. Soak in the somber but yet understated red velvety upholstery, the mellow live piano music, the well-clad servers who keep the drinks and complimentary olives and nuts flowing, and good times will be had. Stopped by the other day for drinks. This is a tiny little place in a beautiful hotel. The place is small an cozy and service was fantastic! I ordered some wine and somehow it felt that the bottle had been sitting open for sometime and I mentioned that to my friends. The hostess apparently overheard us and the manager came over and offered to pour me a new glass! Now that is service :) They do have a good selection of wines and their cocktails were excellent too. A friend asked me out to join him and a couple of others for a cognac and cigar tasting. What I got was much better! Turns out my friend's girlfriend works in PR and we got a private tour of some of the hotel. The night started at Quill, a low-key but swanky cocktail bar. We sat on the outdoor patio and each had three glasses of cognac coupled with a nice medium-bodied cigar. The service was top-notch. We got the low-down on the cognac and the cigars we had the privilege of trying. After some good conversation, we moved on into the hotel lobby where we learned more about the Jefferson's history including the real letters written by Thomas Jefferson on the walls, the conference room with windows that go dark for when Obama visits, the dining room center pieces from Europe in Plume, etc. It was cool to be in the presence of such great history. Pros: Good drinks, awesome glass bar, top-notch service Cons: none Overall, a great place to have a drink on a friday or saturday night. read more

My husband and I arrived at Quill around 6:30pm on a Saturday to have drinks before our dinner at Plume and we were not disappointed. I ordered the Robinson Mule and my husband had the Hill Bee. There's also a piano, but we were there early and I don't think the music starts until later in the evening. The drink I ordered was the Gila Monster (but I asked for regular tequila in place of the jalapeno-infused.) Tequila, Fresh Watermelon, , Honey Syrup, Lime Juice, Sprig of Cilantro . After the small adjustment of a bit more fruit syrup, it was delicious! My friend ordered the Blueberry Hill Vodka, Fresh Blueberries, Pomegranate Syrup, Lemon Juice -- I liked it better. Both cocktails were $15, and not that large, either. So you are warned. AMBIANCE: like I mentioned, it is upscale. However, ironically, there were 2 people in there who failed to get the dress code memo: one was a guy in a white & orange hawaiian print full suit with orange hat, and the other was a woman who came in with casual clothes and flip flops. I enjoy this place so much. This is such a lovely little bar/lounge located in one of the prettiest hotels in DC. During the warm weather season they have a nice, quasi-garden outdoor seating area that overlooks 16th Street but seems like an entire world away. It's a bar with a lively atmosphere but still quiet enough to have a conversation. In other words, it's no sports bar in Clarendon where you'd be at home in your favorite sports teams jersey. This is an elegant bar with elegant cocktails and bar food. Service: fantastic. Prices: high. Pro Tip: order every Rickey on the menu. They make them all in house and are especially great. read more

When I want an amazing cocktail in a quiet but really nice atmosphere, Quill is my go-to. Seek out Rachel behind the bar. She makes the most amazing fancy cocktails in town...maybe on the east coast. Live piano music in the evenings is a nice plus and adds to the overall amazing atmosphere of the Quill. If the bar area is full, go back by the restrooms and notice that there are two rooms that you can get table service in as well. They are like executive conference rooms, so I sometimes use this for customer meetings. Ends up being a really economical way to have a client meeting without having to rent a space. Went there last Sunday for their pre-fixe dinner menu. It's the same quality food from the connected restaurant (Plume) and is $35 for 3 courses + wine. Tomato salad was my first course. I hate tomatoes, but these were delicious. Main course was a soft shell crab sandwich that was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Final course was a mousse that exceeded expectations. My wife and I stopped in at the Quill , in the Jefferson Hotel during our recent stay in DC on a Friday night. My wife ordered the Tiger Tail , and I had the Haulin' Oats. Both very well created drinks, and delicious. We were only planning on staying for one round, but they were so good we ordered a second round. Rachel was such a fun server and explained the drinks to us and the individual ingredients in them that made them up. Top notch service, and it couldnt have been any better. The piano player was a nice touch, and overall just an elegant bar to sit at and have drinks. I highly suggest it , as this was the best bar we visited in DC. read more
