Compared to other Indian fine dining establishments, I found Quilon disappointing. I'm told that my experience dining at this restaurant was out of the ordinary, so perhaps the other reviews should carry more weight than my vote. Our group of three friends arrived at 9:45pm, which was the only reservation time we could secure. We entered the crowded entry where we were greeted with the wall of scent of Indian spices. Our table was not ready, so we were directed to the small lounge with a handful of dirty tables. Empty glasses, food crumbles and dirty paper napkins were strewn about. After about 10 minutes we flagged down a waiter, who took our drink order and didn't return. Meanwhile, a wedding party in the adjacent room asked us to move to another table in the lounge so their larger party could sit there. Once we were displaced, they never used the table. Another 15 minutes later, our table was ready. We ordered the set menu, which arrived in intermittent waves over the next few hours. The time between dishes was excessive and it was difficult to get the attention of the wait staff. The set of sauces and chutneys at the start of the meal was over-spiced in the direction of HOT, not the sort of interesting spice combinations you expect in haut Indian cuisine. One of the chutneys was chopped up lemon rind -- not zest, but the entire rind. Other than that, the food was pretty good, but not extraordinary. Nothing in the realm of a Michelin star restaurant. The table was filthy and rarely cleaned, and we had a hard time keeping our water glasses full. The room was so sweltering hot - and the hour so late - that even with an espresso shot I could barely endure the wait for the final dishes. My friend, who dined at Quilon regularly, assured me that this was not the usual Quilon experience. Most likely the restaurant had not staffed up adequately to service the restaurant *and* the large wedding party. In the end, despite the rather large bill, the manager scored some extra points by taking note of a friend's birthday and surprising us with a cake on our way out. Perhaps if I'm in the area again I'd give Quilon a second chance. read more

The level of service at this restaurant is really beyond anything I've ever experienced. My wife and I booked a meal here on a whim on a Saturday night and were certainly not let down in any way. We had the 5-course meal, accompanied by a Fullers 2009 and left extremely satisfied. Their after-dinner treat (complementary) didn't hurt either: coins of chocolate blended with either candied rose petals or ground cardamom. read more

We arrived here after half a day of hectic sightseeing and were looking forward to a peaceful and good meal. Well they did end up serving some of the best South Indian themed food to us. The menu is slightly different here given you order a 2 or 3 course lunch per person rather than al-a-carte for the table. The 2 course has an appetizer and main dish while the 3 course has an added dessert. Bread and rice comes along with the courses and to supplement the food they serve some vegetables as additions. All the food items were really well made and we enjoyed them. The only issue was the total food quantity was much more than what we could possibly eat so ended up wasting a bit of food :( read more

I gave this Indian restaurant s try after reading the reviews. And I must say I was not disappointed. After I ordered the waiter brought me a selection of pickles and mungo and tomato chutney accompanied by crispy mini papadam, as I didn't order a starter. It was delicious. My main course was prawn masala with lemon rice. The prawns were the biggest I ate so far and were sheer poetry. The lemon rice was fluffy and tasted heavenly. I finished with baked yoghurt. It came in three flavor I.e. Lychee, Mango and Blood orange. Creamy and heavenly. This was a worthy finish of an excellent meal. read more

We came here on a short trip to London and I was really looking forward to trying out Michelin Star quality Indian food. Sadly, we were all a bit disappointed, even more so now that I've returned and seen the price in USD. We ordered the tasting menu, so it was not a matter of choosing the wrong dishes and after travelling to Kerala before, I feel like we understood the cuisine. The highlight was definitely the masala prawn and fish course. The other courses did not stand out above Indian food I've had elsewhere, with the biryanai being especially disappointing. The sad thing, is that the food at Bistro (also at the Taj) we found to be superior to the better known Quilon. read more

Normally, I reserve five stars for those restaurants that are at or very near to Michelin-level quality. Quilon is, literally. a one star Michelin establishment. Hence, the unqualified five stars. I love Indian food with a cold beer - when I asked if they had Taj beer - they had a secret shipment in the basement they had ordered for a party that wasn't on the menu!!! The atmosphere was bland and boring and there were a lot of empty tables (you would not think you were in a Michelin star restaurant) but the food was absolutely delightful from start to finish. The service was excellent. The food was marginal. I was disappointed in the lamb dish I ordered which included just a few bits of lamb in a bowl of rice. We felt nickle and dimed with being charged for tap water, rice and bread. Shameful in our opinion. The pistachio cake was three little bits of cake for £10. We will not be back. read more

Finally !!! At last i have found a good South Indian (well ... not totally ... but the strong Kerala influence in the menu is obvious) restaurant in central London. Quilon, named after a small town in Southern India (okay ... i am guessing about this), is located a little off Victoria st near the St James Park tube station. Its a bit difficult to find if you are not familiar with the area ... look for the Indian flag and the flag of the Taj group of hotels. I came here for a Sunday lunch. The place was almost empty. I hope more people come here for dinner, as the food is fabbulous. I ordered some fish for starter, which was good. However i was really impressed by the vegetable dosa that my friend asked for. The stuffing was evenly spread throughout the interior of the dosa, and not merely at the centre as in most places. Also it was a mixed vegetable stuffing and not the potato curry you see elsewhere ... and it tasted really good. For the main course we had lamb as well as a paneer dish. Quilon has a greater percentage of sea-food dishes than any other Indian restaurant i have been to in London ... but i felt that their vegetarian fare was better. I was a bit disappointed with the dessert ... but maybe we were ourselves to blame. Note to myself: Never ever order ice-cream with cracked pepper ... they don't go well together :( We had gone for the set lunch menu. At 22 pounds for 3 courses + coffee, it was really reasonable, especially given the fact that Quilon holds a Michelin star. My friend had arrived an hour and fifteen minutes late ... but they were never impatient and did not force me to order quickly ... so i would rate their service level as quite good ... though the fact that nobody was waiting for a table probably helped. On the whole, a very good place for some off-beat South Indian fare. read more

This is my third favorite Indian restaurant in the world. It has a Keralan influenced cuisine, and it's different to most Indian restaurants so it is worth checking out. It's also going to be great to take friends who don't really like Indian food since the flavors here are more subtle. I'll just describe a few dishes which I think make this place special: 1) Mini vegetable dosa. These are really cute. You get a plate with three cones on it each filled with a spicy potato filling. Served with a side of sambhar. All I can say is that the combination of ingredients is just perfect. The best dosa I've had. 2) Crab cakes. The curried crab cakes are really tasty. Not much to describe - you just have to have them. 3) Baked Black Cod. The black cod is marinated in molasses. It's like the black cod at nobu, but the molasses is less sweet than a miso glaze and more of a sweet-spicy finish. It's outstanding. 4) Mango curry. This is a really nice vegetarian dish. Ripe mango with green chillies, yoghurt, coconut, mustard, and other spices. It's surprising, but it works really well. Can't be described it has to be tasted. 5) Prawn masala. Nice jumbo prawns in a tomato-onion curry. It's very tasty. 6) Mangalorean Chicken. I personally prefer the tikka masala, but this is a nice change. It has a tomato and coconut sauce. Very tasty. 7) Lemon rice. This is better than regular rice and works very well with the more unusual curries that they serve. They also have curd rice and tomato rice. Their all good. The Lemon rice works best with the black cod. 8) In addition to the usual paratha and naan, this restaurant also serves Appam which is the pancake like stuff you have in dosa. It's a nice addition in terms of breads. What distinguishes Quilon is a combination of incredibly fresh ingredients, modern flavors, and an unusual Keralan influenced recipes. It's different, and it's very good. They fully deserve the Michelin star that they have received. read more

This is the only restaurant I know of that serves (south Indian) Kerala cuisine. The service is excellent and the food is delicious. The ambiance and decor is 5 star. The dishes that stand out are Prawn masala, Kothu lamb, Quilon fish curry and the Malabar Paratha. We were a group of 10, our waiter split our order of 5 dishes evenly and made sure he substituted cauliflower instead of meat for vegetarians. A delightful South Indian restaurant in London. We met some friends here for dinner during our trip and was not disappointed. The service can not be faulted, the food memorable and the ambience invites long conversations. The popadum served with two sauces was delicious. The amuse bouche of spicy tomatoeey consome prepared the palates for the explosion of flavor that came along with the dishes. We had 5 people in our party and decided to order family style so that we can sample all. The waiter helped with choosing the dishes and all had smile on their faces after the meal. We wanted a restaurant nearby our hotel, the Crowne Plaza St. James and Quilon exceeded our expectations. We're not fans of any type of Indian cuisine. However, when I looked a the menu and reviews, decided that we would take a chance. We were thrilled across the board. The dishes are extremely flavorful, plentiful and artfully crafted. The chef also brought out a number of other appetizers and side dishes for us to try. For those of you who associate Indian cuisine with curry, Quilon has a very sophisticated and diverse range of spices and flavorings. Best Indian meal I've ever had! Also one of the best fish dishes I've tasted (the stone bass in a tomato-red chili sauce--get it!). Amazing bold flavors all around. The fisherman's catch and artichoke, cauliflower, and beer root chop were also great starters. Service was impeccable. We got the sea bass and lemon rice on the recommendation of our waiter and were so glad we did. And since it was my birthday they brought a complimentary small dessert with a giant sparkler. So fun. There was room for improvement on a few things so I left a comment card with praise and feedback (namely the pistachio dessert was a miss). As we were heading out the door, the staff brought us a new check where they had comped the dessert. Not necessary but very appreciated. This earned them 5 stars. Highly recommend. read more
