I strongly advise against dining at this establishment. The food was undercooked, and I almost broke a tooth on the hard, uncooked rice. To make matters worse, the owner was not only unapologetic but appeared to be intoxicated and was extremely rude. There was no accountability taken, and I was refused a refund or any effort to make the situation right. Houston you have a problem!!! This place needs to be shutdown!!! Immediately!!! read more

Fellow Yelper Jeremy T.'s review was pretty much spot on to my experience for lunch today. Parking is easy in front of the restaurant. Walking in, they had a steam table for the soul food selections of 4 meats and several vegetables. At another counter where the cash register is the bbq can be ordered. It took me a while to decide which way I wanted to go. Finally I decided since bbq is in the name here to try that first so I ordered a chopped beef sandwich special combo with fries and a drink for $9.25 plus tax. The food was ready in about 1-2 minutes after paying. This bothered me but the meat was very warm and the fries hot so no real complaints. The bun had a lot of meat on it and taste wise it was ok but a little chewy and I helped it with some of their bbq sauce (3). I didn't expect a Texas Monthly Top 10 quality here and I would consider ordering it again. The fries are homemade and therefore were very good. They were slightly limpy like some handcut fries can be but I still enjoyed them (4). For the money, the meal was a good value. The sandwhich was big and there were plenty of fries so I was full when leaving. I gave the meal an overall score of a 3. Like Jeremy, if I returned I would like to try the soul food. The interior is large with two separate dining rooms. Counter service was friendly and helpful. Closed on Sundays. read more

R&K has come a long way from their humble beginnings operating out of a little trailer - kudos to them for that. The first thing I'd like to say is that there are some friendly folks working here. Maria was super nice and kindly offered us a sampling of their oxtail and also the chilly. The cook (I didn't catch his name) also came out to see what we thought about the oxtail and he was friendly fella as well. Both the oxtail and chilli were pretty delicious and if our to-go order wasn't as large as it was, we may have added on some of each of these two items. Oh well, that just means we'll have to come back again to enjoy larger portions of those. Over the past 2 recent visits, we've taken home sliced brisket, sliced chicken breast (because they ran out of the 1/2 chicken), a couple of sliced beef sandwiches, baked potato with all the trimmings plus pulled pork, potato salad, cole slaw, okra, and mac & cheese, and fries. My favorite items were probably the chopped beef sandwich and loaded potato, plus potato salad as far as side dishes go. Sadly, the sliced brisket was a little disappointing. It wasn't so tender and that was harder to mask because they sliced it pretty thick and not thin. The flavor of the sauce helped amp it up a little bit but I'm a huge fan of brisket and it didn't meet my expectations on this day. The chopped beef sandwich was a little better but still not quite as tender and juicy as I would have liked. The "overloaded" potato, however, was pretty darn good...and HUGE!! The pork topping was juicy and plentiful and the whole thing was a meal and then some in and of itself. I love the sweet & tangy balance of the potato salad and it was as creamy as I like my potato salads to be. The cole slaw, too, was crunchy and tasty enough. I wasn't a huge fan of the okra or mac & cheese but those aren't items I normally order anyway so don't want to knock them too hard because of that. They just didn't wow me but others may find them to be just fine if they usually like those items. Again, as good as the food was, the service and friendliness really impressed me even more. They also have a hot plate station packed with plenty of soul food items to choose from and they rotate the items. Check out my pics for a breakdown of what's available. This place was amazing. We had a huge group and they were super accommodating to us even though we had not made a reservation. Here is the break down: Appearances: Nice but not fancy. It's a BBQ joint that you come here for the food. Service: Above and beyond! They are some of the nicest people here and they offered us free food along with trying some pork rinds. Quantity of food: The meat section is absolutely to die for! It's so amazing and so delicious. I can't believe this place doesn't have better reviews. Be careful though it's a lot of food! The drinks only come in giant size so if you order a drink... It will be a lot of liquid! read more

I happened to be in the area one day and always like trying new bbq places that I haven't ever been to. Any that have been around for as long as R&K must be doing something right. The interior is no frills, although they had it decorated a little since it was during the holidays. They have several "daily specials", posted on signs taped throughout the restaurant, like the pork chop sandwich, chopped beef sandwich combo and the day I came was a baked potato (no meat) special. They have a good sized menu, but I settled on the Michael Harris Sandwich which comes with fries. I added a sweet tea. I wanted to try their banana pudding, but I didn't see it placed out on the cold salad bar cart they have by the window. The sandwich was quite interesting, it's beef, sausage, red onion, pickles and mustard. They don't specify what the beef is. The cashier said it was chopped beef and I was of course assuming it was brisket, but it actually tasted like pot roast. The fries are fresh cut, so that was good...and I enjoyed the sausage slices in my sandwich. The pot roast was just okay, and unexpected. Some pieces were tender, some were on the dry side. The overall taste of the sandwich worked well, but I would likely try another item (likely soul food) if I ever came back. read more

Complete trash! Ordered 2 Michael Harris sandwiches, coleslaw (never received) and onion rings from this place. The order was missing a whole sandwich and the coleslaw. There were five burnt onion rings provided for an order. I will never patronize this place again and neither should anyone else who values their money. What a pleasant surprise it was us to visit R&K BBQ today. We were greeted promptly by the owner, and allowed to try a sample to help us decide what to order. We ended up with the Michael Harris sandwich and a type of stew that consisted of steak, sausage and chicken. (My husband says it's a soup). The sandwich came with super tender brisket and a savory, robust sausage. The stew was the kind that sticks to your ribs. In addition to the BBQ features, there were also some soul food offerings, including the stew, cabbage, oxtails, okra, etc. And we got tea cakes for dessert! It seems making tea cakes is becoming a lost art, so we had to try them. They are pretty good. My husband and I have made a pact to support non-chain business. R&K's, with it's prompt, kind customer service and delicious fare, is a place we will continue to support. I'm looking forward to trying other items in the menu. Check out R&K yourself! read more

I stopped in to give this place a try. I'm from a town big on barbeque so I'm weary of trying restaurant's that has barbeque as a staple. We got 2 chopped beef sandwiches. The chopped beef was dry and has little to no smoked taste. The meat had no barbeque sauce on it. The fries were soggy. Needless to say I had to dress it up when I got home. It still didn't suit my taste buds. Chopped beef is made with brisket it needs to be smoked long and should be very tender. Never freeze it and reheat it. Because Real cooks can tell. read more

I paid $18 for my plate and I get the driest, jerky like textured end piece of "ribs" And to add insult to injury, you get canned beans and a sort of blended potato salad. Disclaimer: I'm Asian American with very little soul food experience, so I don't know what exactly good soul food should taste like, but I've been curious to try it. I think the negatives may just be because of my preferences (I like strong flavors and I like sweet things to be very sweet), so keep that in mind. I'm looking forward to trying their barbecue and chicken wings in future visits. The woman who helped me was extremely nice and helpful (5 stars for service). She even gave me several samples of various items since it was my first time. She said the chicken wings special (10 wings for $5 or 20 wings for $10) is available only at night, but you can get any number of wings to-go at any time for $1/wing. It's a great deal, especially because they give you the entire wing (leg, wing, and tip), for both the chicken and turkey (soul food menu) wings. Ox tail: 4 out of 5 stars. Very tender and moist, but I just wish the flavor was stronger. It's also the most expensive meat and pretty pricey, but I know raw ox tail is also fairly expensive. Meatball: 3 stars. It was OK, but nothing special, but I'm also not a meatball fan (she gave me one whole meatball to sample). I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but the meat was a little firmer than some meatballs that I've had, but it could have just been leaner meat? Yams: 4 stars. They are only slightly sweetened, but pretty good texture since they're soft chunks with just a hint of firmness so it's not mushy. They sit in a fair amount of liquid (not sure what it is, maybe just water?) in the heating tray, so not as sweet as candied yams that have no liquid. They also do not have any marshmallows like candied yams, another reason they're not as sweet. I like candied yams, but seems it's not a fair comparison. Collard greens: 3 stars. It tastes pretty bitter, but I think that's just how this vegetable tastes from my past experience, which is limited. She said they cook it with some meat, bacon I think, but I didn't really taste the flavor. I liked that it's made with bigger pieces of the leaves (but still small enough that you don't have to cut it) rather than chopped into small pieces like most other places where I've eaten it. I probably would not order it unless I just want another vegetable to be healthy and low-carb. Red beans: 3 stars. Nothing to get too excited about, but not bad. Cornbread: 3 stars. Just standard cornbread, nothing special. I'm not a big cornbread fan, but I like it when it's moist and sweet, but then again it's probably just my preference, and I have only had cornbread like that in a couple other restaurants. Strawberry cake: 3 stars. Overall it was okay. It appears to have some small pieces of strawberries in it, which is nice. I'm not sure what kind of frosting it was, and it looked fine when it was in the store at room temperature, but by the time I ate it many hours later at home at room temperature the icing had slid down a little towards the bottom of the container which was not visually appealing. When I ate it, that icing was lighter/fluffier than some other icings, and the cake is placed in the container laying on its side, which is why I guess it collapsed. The most disappointing BBQ I've had in Texas. The sliced beef was so dry that it broke into pieces when I picked it up.... Not "fall off the bone" separate, but literally broke. I literally couldn't chew the meat because it was so dry. Ended up throwing away all of the beef and most of the chicken (wasn't as dry, but I was really hungry). Ranch was good though. Amazing service! My husband and I are truck drivers and was at the shipper headed to the Loves truck stop. I went on door dash and saw all menu items were not listed so we called. The lady who answered was so friendly and went thru the entire menu. We ordered our meals (4 plates plus dessert) which came up to about $120. We told her we couldn't get their due to the semi truck. She then offer to deliver to us, for a fee, to the shipper. We were so excited that she offered that to us. She delivered and everything was as expected. The food was sooooo delicious. I gave a her great tip for her excellent service with a smile. I gave her a hug because she went out of her way and we appreciated that. EAT HERE! Can't wIt to come back to Houston. read more

Everything here seems large and definitely worth my money. The baked potato with beef was huge, enough for two people, and delicious. The staff is friendly and willing to please. My second visit consisted of a pork ribs plate with baked beans and cole slaw. Ribs were much bigger than I've seen in most places and very tasty. Beans were good and cole slaw was ok, but mayo was a little watery. Sweet tea was just a little bit too sweet for me, but regular tea had a good flavor. Peach cobbler was ok, but heavy on sugar and nutmeg, which I'm not a big fan of. Once again, portion sizes enough for two. I can't wait to go back to try something else. I came for BBQ, however the steam table looked interesting with items remindful of my East Texas upbringing; smothered steak, yams, greens, etc. Maybe I'll try some next time. Passed by this place and decided to stop and try the Que. When I went inside they had a soul food table so I ordered from that instead. HUGE, very huge mistake. How do you serve SF and not offer brown gravy? The oxtails were stewed in a very greasy liquid base. The pork chops were smothered in a nasty tasting pork gravy. The other item I could not recognize. I tried the oxtails with yams and black eyed peas, the sides looked very unappetizing and tasted worse. I managed to get the peas down, but the yams were too nasty to swallow. The oxtails were decent, but lacked the taste of other Soul Food places. I got a large koolaid and they used a blend of flavors that the employees said changes with every prep. It tastes horrible and needed sugar. Most places put way too much sugar and I have to dilute with water, but that mess was bland. I don't know why my experience seems to be so totally different than the majority of others. Maybe the bbq side of the business is where the good stars come from. I am rarely in this area so I doubt if I will give the bbq side a chance to dispel my first impression. read more
