Chopped beef sandwich with homemade fries and large drink special

Fellow Yelper Jeremy T.'s review was pretty much spot on to my experience for lunch today. Parking is easy in front of the restaurant. Walking in, they had a steam table for the soul food selections of 4 meats and several vegetables. At another counter where the cash register is the bbq can be ordered. It took me a while to decide which way I wanted to go. Finally I decided since bbq is in the name here to try that first so I ordered a chopped beef sandwich special combo with fries and a drink for $9.25 plus tax. The food was ready in about 1-2 minutes after paying. This bothered me but the meat was very warm and the fries hot so no real complaints. The bun had a lot of meat on it and taste wise it was ok but a little chewy and I helped it with some of their bbq sauce (3). I didn't expect a Texas Monthly Top 10 quality here and I would consider ordering it again. The fries are homemade and therefore were very good. They were slightly limpy like some handcut fries can be but I still enjoyed them (4). For the money, the meal was a good value. The sandwhich was big and there were plenty of fries so I was full when leaving. I gave the meal an overall score of a 3. Like Jeremy, if I returned I would like to try the soul food. The interior is large with two separate dining rooms. Counter service was friendly and helpful. Closed on Sundays.

R&K has come a long way from their humble beginnings operating out of a little trailer - kudos to them for that. The first thing I'd like to say is that there are some friendly folks working here. Maria was super nice and kindly offered us a sampling of their oxtail and also the chilly. The cook (I didn't catch his name) also came out to see what we thought about the oxtail and he was friendly fella as well. Both the oxtail and chilli were pretty delicious and if our to-go order wasn't as large as it was, we may have added on some of each of these two items. Oh well, that just means we'll have to come back again to enjoy larger portions of those. Over the past 2 recent visits, we've taken home sliced brisket, sliced chicken breast (because they ran out of the 1/2 chicken), a couple of sliced beef sandwiches, baked potato with all the trimmings plus pulled pork, potato salad, cole slaw, okra, and mac & cheese, and fries. My favorite items were probably the chopped beef sandwich and loaded potato, plus potato salad as far as side dishes go. Sadly, the sliced brisket was a little disappointing. It wasn't so tender and that was harder to mask because they sliced it pretty thick and not thin. The flavor of the sauce helped amp it up a little bit but I'm a huge fan of brisket and it didn't meet my expectations on this day. The chopped beef sandwich was a little better but still not quite as tender and juicy as I would have liked. The "overloaded" potato, however, was pretty darn good...and HUGE!! The pork topping was juicy and plentiful and the whole thing was a meal and then some in and of itself. I love the sweet & tangy balance of the potato salad and it was as creamy as I like my potato salads to be. The cole slaw, too, was crunchy and tasty enough. I wasn't a huge fan of the okra or mac & cheese but those aren't items I normally order anyway so don't want to knock them too hard because of that. They just didn't wow me but others may find them to be just fine if they usually like those items. Again, as good as the food was, the service and friendliness really impressed me even more. They also have a hot plate station packed with plenty of soul food items to choose from and they rotate the items. Check out my pics for a breakdown of what's available. I'll definitely need to try this on a return trip to R&K.

This place was amazing. We had a huge group and they were super accommodating to us even though we had not made a reservation. Here is the break down: Appearances: Nice but not fancy. It's a BBQ joint that you come here for the food. Service: Above and beyond! They are some of the nicest people here and they offered us free food along with trying some pork rinds. Quantity of food: The meat section is absolutely to die for! It's so amazing and so delicious. I can't believe this place doesn't have better reviews. Be careful though it's a lot of food! The drinks only come in giant size so if you order a drink... It will be a lot of liquid!

The Service here is AMAZING, the owner is really nice and they go around to make sure everything's fine. The baked potatoes are my favorite and always stuffed with meat, I always have some left over ! The fries are freshly cut and amazing as well. One of my favorite places.

I stopped in to give this place a try. I'm from a town big on barbeque so I'm weary of trying restaurant's that has barbeque as a staple. We got 2 chopped beef sandwiches. The chopped beef was dry and has little to no smoked taste. The meat had no barbeque sauce on it. The fries were soggy. Needless to say I had to dress it up when I got home. It still didn't suit my taste buds. Chopped beef is made with brisket it needs to be smoked long and should be very tender. Never freeze it and reheat it. Because Real cooks can tell.

Their selection of meats and sides is really above average compared to a lot of places. Every side I've tried here I've actually liked. They use Martin's bread, and they'll give you your accoutrements like pickles, escabeche, and the like. If you like those, make sure you ask for extra up front -- there's no stand to go grab them later, so you've got to get them when you go through the line. Large seating area with many large tables and a full service bar. The seating does get a little filled up when they are busy. I suggest coming early and being in line before doors open. Brisket: 4.5/5 Sausage: 5/5 Turkey Brest: 5/5 Escabeche & picadillo sides:5/5 Barbecue sauce: 4.5/5 Tater tot casserole:5/5 Mac & cheese:4/5 It's pretty consistent -- out of all the times I've been, there was only once where I was a little let down by the brisket. But in general it's top notch, probably the best you're going to get in Houston. Would recommend and return.

A 2-year Michellin star BBQ joint was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. My friends and I got there around 10am and were lucky enough to grab a number. The number secures your spot in line but don't worry if you show up and they run out, there's a spot on the porch where the non-number line starts. We ordered moist brisket, garlic sausage, and the beef rib. For sides, we went with mac and cheese and beans. Everything was superb! The brisket melted in your mouth, no knife needed. The sausage had a nice snap to it and get great flavor. The bark on the beef rib was *chef's kiss*. The mac and cheese was creamy while the beans had a nice sweet and tangy flavor. The service is also great! While we were eating, staff would regularly check all of the tables to check if anyone needed anything. The staff taking our order also chatted with us about other BBQ spots we've been to. Everything was such a great experience and the quality of the food is 100/10!

When we got our order to the room we were missing one side that we ordered. We got Mac n cheese, green beans and potato salad with a brisket/smoked chicken combo and a brisket/ribs. I was shocked to see two pieces of brisket and a chicken breast for $28. Maybe it was an off night but the quality just wasn't there. All the food was cold (our fault bc we ordered it for delivery) and was lacking flavor. My partner had the brisket sandwich with potato salad and a small helping of pickles and pickled red onions and I had the pulled pork tacos. My partner said the brisket sandwich was okay, but we both agreed that the potato salad was fantastic! The potato salad was way better than the one at Pappas Barbecue. The taste of the pulled pork tacos was great, but it was honestly too wet and made the flour tortillas too soggy and there was way too much coleslaw on top. I feel like if Killen's is going to serve pulled pork tacos there needs to be three things done. 1. Serve the tacos with an option of corn tortillas because I feel corn tortillas would've worked better to give a great contrast/pairing with the sweetness of the pulled pork and sauce. 2. Serve the corn/flour tortillas on the side so that they don't get soggy and wet. 3. There are some things that just don't belong on a taco of any kind and that's coleslaw. My partner and I also tasted the banana pudding and to say it was divine is an understatement. What I really like about this pudding was that you could taste real bananas in this pudding and it had been mixed well all together. Our total was $80 after tipping, which is a little pricey for some of the items, but honestly I would definitely come back to Killen's Barbecue when I was in the mood for barbecue.
