One of the places to eat at the Fashion Island. They accept walk ins but wait time is needed as there are plenty of diners on weekends. The flat Iron Steak, Carnitas Sandwich, Charbroiled Filet, Asparagus are 10 out of 10! Ambience had a welcoming and dynamic vibe as the place was alive with positive energy from every customer who were enjoying their time. This place is worth checking.

I'm really surprised this place doesn't have better reviews because I had such a pleasant lunch here. I came on a Wednesday afternoon and it was packed, so I was glad I made a reservation since the wait without one was around 45 minutes. I really enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was seasoned perfectly, super tender, and the bread was soooo soft. I also got an unsweetened iced tea and it was the perfect combo for an afternoon lunch. The service was also amazing. Our server and the host was really friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend!

We came here the other day for cocktails only. There was a bit of a weight, but we did get in. We sat at the bar they do make pretty good drink drinks. As we were enjoying them, they brought fresh new cold, martini glasses, and put our existing drinks in them .. very classy. It's a very busy place. It's fun to people watch.. Next time I have to try the food .

R+D Restaurant is my go-to whenever I'm at Fashion Island. The service is always great, and the food consistently comes out perfectly every time. It's such a great spot to grab a meal solo after a long day of shopping--comfortable, reliable, and never disappointing. The au jus prime rib sandwich is a must, and their cheeseburger is just as good. The fries are perfectly done, and the deviled eggs are absolutely delicious. Definitely one of the best places to stop by when in the area.

Food - today, am gonna try the skirt steak with chimichurri sauce. I love their Lamb sando, their Dings crispy sando, tuna tartare, dip duo, and othe goodies. Service - service is good here. Usually attentive and helpful. Ambiance - i consider this a mature refined environment Verdict - if your expectations are on par with the crowd, then visit this place. If you like to complain and are needy, then maybe not the place for you. Most of the time, we loved this place! Some hits and misses every now and then, but mostly good.

I'm gonna start off why saying why it doesn't get a 5 star review like the other 3 hill stone restaurants in OC. It's quite simple and obvious. I'm not the only one with gripes about it: why the hell are sides like fries, salad, coleslaw or whatever EXTRA? The French dip, dings crispy chicken etc should come with it, not be some stand alone BS. I get it, fashion island rent do be crazy Spencey but still, it's the principle. Whatever. The cool thing about it is they have a few extra things and items you can't get at Houston's, bandera or gulfstream but they aren't spectacular enough to make it a 5 or like be on par with the others. The drinks and cocktails are just as good though. So great place for fancy drinks and Apps. Salud.

Great experience and R+D that is a family favorite. We put our name down and were seated about 20 mins later in a cozy booth. I had their cheeseburger which is now $23. Was delish as always. We also go ther coleslaw and fries as appys. My son had ther fish and he enjoyed it very much. Wife loved her cocktail which was delish but also very strong. Best thing about this was the first server that sat us down. She was very friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and food prep and recommended a few items. Our main server was ok but the first young lady made this a 5 star review.

Years later, as I upload 2 photos, I see that I'm still enjoying the same R & D items. (I need to branch out!) Well I have had the veggie burger and Ding's Crispy Chicken Sandwich a number of times. Everything I've had here is good.

    Super cute atmosphere great service

Was recommended this place by a friend and I was not disappointed. It was a very cute restaurant very clean. The staff was amazing. They recommended us to try different things and I was not disappointed. Everything was delicious. It was fast and efficient. And it's at a beautiful location got to walk the food off after everything was great.

Still took care of our wonderful server. As she was just as shocked as I was

I had a frustrating and honestly disappointing experience with management at R&D Kitchen specifically with Kelly. At around 5pm, I was seated on the patio with the sun directly on my back. I was dressed appropriately in a collared shirt, tucked in, and overall well put together. The only issue? I had my hat on backward to block the sun. I was approached and told I couldn't wear my hat that way, which felt completely unnecessary and, frankly, a bit selective. There was nothing disruptive, inappropriate, or disrespectful about my appearance. It seemed like a rigid enforcement of a rule without any consideration for comfort or context especially given the outdoor setting and time of day. What made it worse was the tone and lack of flexibility from Kelly. Instead of creating a welcoming environment, it felt more like being policed over something trivial. It's hard not to question whether this kind of enforcement is applied consistently to all guests. For a place that prides itself on atmosphere and hospitality, this interaction missed the mark. Guests should feel comfortable and respected, not singled out over minor, situational things like how a hat is worn especially when seated outside in direct sunlight. I expected better

We arrived for our lunch reservation quite early, but the accommodating staff seated us immediately and our server was knowledgeable and attentive. The food was delicious and the space delightful. We started off with the dip duo (guacamole and queso) and the rock shrimp. I shared the lamb sandwich and one of my table mates enjoyed the tuna salad sandwich while another said his French dip was tasty. All in all, a great meal was had by everyone at the table.

    Ahi Tuna Tartare.
    Michelle Z.

I arrived to Fashion Island for lunch and shopping. My favorite hostess Christine and outstanding bartender Angela were there which made me feel very welcome and delighted. I selected Ahi Tuna Tartare and Deviled eggs. Paired well with Rombauer Sauvignon Blanc. The photo I present was from years past when things were done beautifully and presented the same at each visit. Much has changed ... Noah, the fairly new manager was very inappropriate when he rudely asked me to take my phone conversation outside in the middle of an important call. Now mind you, I was brief and there was only one other candidate reading a newspaper across from me at 11 am on a Thursday. Nobody was seated in the bar area yet, much less next to me on either side. I would disturb nobody. For 20 minutes I watched as they briefed a new hire where everything was in the bar as she was in training. Normally that wouldn't bother me. But because I was handled with no grace, I felt like my 30 minute dining experience at $60 a pop was wasteful and regrettable. Please review the insane policies and put more emphasis on the food and portions. Thank you!

We arrived on our first dining experience here to find an ambience that is elegant and lively. The bar is the centerpiece and the booths and tables are very comfortable for a long dinner. Our waitress was very friendly and polite. She went out of her way to make us feel welcomed. Now for the food: outstanding Caesar salad to start the meal and the lamb shanks were prepared to perfection. My Jewel had a lemon pasta dish that she loved and will order again. Dessert was a warm rhubarb-strawberry cake served with a divine vanilla ice cream. I quickly realized that we should have tried this place sooner. Truly a spectacular dining adventure. Note: this place is owned by the same group that owns A Restaurant in NB and Crystal Cove.

We…read morereceived a very warm welcome from Andrea, who was courteous, professional, and accommodating when we requested a different table. The staff who assisted with seating and bringing silverware were also friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, our dining experience declined once our order was taken. We ordered the Beets Salad as our starter, followed by the Chicken Piccata and Salmon as our entrées. The salad arrived within about five minutes, but we then waited nearly 40 minutes for our main courses without any acknowledgment or update. When I asked our waitress about the delay, her only response was, "Your order was fired 15 minutes ago." When I asked why it had taken so long, she simply repeated the same statement. At no point did she offer a sincere apology or show any empathy for the extended wait. As someone who has owned and managed businesses, I know that delays can happen. However, a simple apology and proactive communication can make all the difference in how guests perceive the experience. The food itself was excellent, and both entrées were well prepared. Unfortunately, the service continued to disappoint. After we finished our meals, our waitress immediately cleared our plates and brought the check without asking whether we would like dessert, coffee, or anything else to finish our evening. That was surprising and made us feel rushed. I rarely leave negative reviews because I understand that every business can have an off night. In this case, however, the issue was not the kitchen delay--it was the lack of communication, empathy, and basic hospitality. Had our waitress simply apologized, kept us informed, or involved a manager, this review likely would not have been necessary. I hope management views this as constructive feedback. Andrea and several other staff members represented the restaurant exceptionally well, but I believe additional customer service training would help ensure that situations like this are handled with greater professionalism and care in the future.

The chips and salsa were really good. The aguachile had a nice spicy flavor that made it stand out. The queso fundido was SO good super cheesy, and paired with the handmade tortillas it was one of my favorites. We also ordered the calamari and I was surprised by how good it was. Everyone ordered different rounds of cocktails throughout the night and honestly, not one missed. Service was a little slow, but it was a busy Friday night, so that's somewhat expected. I've been here before and the grilled octopus tacos and carne asada burrito were just as good as I remembered them. They also made the birthday celebration really cute. They sang happy birthday, brought out a small ice cream, and gave my friend a big mariachi hat. Good food, great drinks, and still consistent as I remembered it. So long Playa Mesa. 9.5/10

We've been here a few times before and always thought it was decent. So, we made the last minute reservation online and got here 15 minutes early. When we arrived, there was a short line, but per the reservation instructions, one of my friends went in to check in while we waited outside. Friend: Hi, I'm checking in for a reservation. Bartender: What time is your reservation. Friend: 10 Bartender: What time is it now? Friend: 9:45 Bartender: Then I'll see you at 10pm. Friend came back annoyed and explained what happened. The bartender didn't say it in a joking way, but with attitude and annoyance. Most staff would respond "Thank you for checking in, we will let you know when your table is available." We weren't going to let this ruin our night, so we waited and were seated by the hostess. The bar itself is dimly lit and very tight. The music was loud enough that we had to almost yell to hear each other. The waiter came by soon after and was extremely friendly. We said we'd been here a few times before, but it's been a while. He refreshes our memory by saying they specialize making variations of classics. They want customers to focus on the flavors and that's why the menu doesn't list the spirit in their drinks. Also, they only make drinks on the menu because their drinks are prebatched/premade. We ask for recommendations which he was happy to give. We each order a drink and a snack for the table. As we're talking (very loudly so we can hear each other), we lose track of time before we realize that it's been 20 minutes and we haven't gotten our drinks yet. For something that's prebatched, it shouldn't take long. Before we can flag down the waiter, he comes by and apologizes that they lost our order and had to put it back in. We appreciate the honesty and say it's no problem. 5 minutes later, our drinks and food arrives. He again apologizes for the wait and has a second order of our food that he's including for free. Honestly we were ok with just the apology, but extra food too? Hell yea. Sounds like it was turning around. The drinks were okay. Not amazing, but definitely above average 3.8 / 5. The snack, bread and butter, were surprisingly good. 4.5 / 5 When we asked for the check, the waiter brought the credit card reader and told us we can swipe our card any time and left it on our table. We look at the bill and realize the waiter not only gave us the 2nd snack for free, but comp'd 2 of the drinks also. We all agree this waiter is GREAT. So why the 2 stars? Well first let me say, I would leave it at 1 star, but the waiter definitely earned them another. We wanted to pay cash, so we waited for him to come back. Instead, the original rude bartender comes by and realizes we haven't paid yet. We ask if we can pay with cash. He explains that they don't accept cash. Friend: Are you sure? *Proceeds to try to insert cash into the chip reader slot* Bartender: You're pretty stupid, aren't you? Friend: Maybe if I swipe it instead *Doubles down and proceeds to swipe the cash through the magnetic strip reader* Bartender: Wow, you really are stupid. My friend is a 100% a goofball and having fun with the bartender. It was OBVIOUS that he was joking. Was it funny? A little. Was it stupid? 100%. But for the bartender or ANY customer service staff to call a paying customer "stupid", that's simply unacceptable. We're all pretty pissed at this point and simply swipe the card and the bartender leaves. As I said earlier, we've come here a few times. We don't live especially close, but when we're in the area, we would always consider coming here. Now, there's no chance. For any business, even if your drinks and food are great, customer service can easily DESTROY your experience and that's exactly what the bartender did. Note to the male bartender with no hair: You really shouldn't be interacting with customers. You were rude from the start and have no sense of humor. Could you be having a bad day? Sure, but that's not an excuse to be rude to customers. I know management saw my original post because it was removed, probably because I referred to the bartender by his hairstyle (or lack thereof) multiple times. If they rather remove my post than deal with their bartender, that's another sign to avoid this place.
