First and foremost you've to realize that the food served at this place was used to be served at a "grease trucks" for Rutgers students till 3-4am everyday. The whole premise is to mix and match greasy finger foods into a sandwich/hoagie roll. So if you're trying this for a first time, going in with that expectation is great. I love stopping by any time I'm in New Brunswick or even for late night cravings. There's just about any combination of what you would want inside, gyro meat, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, french fries, jalapeño peppers, you name it. It's not high class fine dining, but it's not supposed to be either. It's supposed to be a guilty pleasure 2 AM after drinking food and it fits this bill perfectly. I can see why Rutgers students love this truck. It's cheap. It's greasy. It's fatty. It's fast. All of these components make it the perfect candidate for drunk food. I've heard about the truck when I was in college (not Rutgers) and would have liked to try it. But then when I saw it on Man v. Food on the Travel Channel, I knew I had to try it. I even imagined myself taking the "Fat Sandwich Challenge", where you eat 5 fat sandwiches within 45 minutes and get your own customized fat sammie added to the menu. I must have been really hungry when I was watching the show, because I didn't think that was that hard of a challenge. When it came time for me to actually eat ONE sandwich, I ate half and already started feeling pretty nauseous from all the grease. She's always incredulous about the things local to her that I have not done that are local experiences like the Kentucky Derby or Albuquerque's Balloon Festival. So, I ordered the Fat Buddha (because I have the body of a god and that god is Buddha). It had cheeseburger, a fried egg, french fries, fries, lettuce, mayo I asked to be left off, and pork roll. Nick said I would lose my man card if I didn't finish it, and I could have finished it but Nick doesn't like me very much anyway and the sandwich was so big that by the time I was nearly finished the sandwich was cold. If it had been someone who liked me and I was fourteen and cared what people thought I'd have finished it. Also, Dan told me to throw it out because I wasn't allowed to hurl in his new car. The sandwich was half as good as a Primanti (which is the mountaintop of American Sandwiches) and that is still pretty darn good. Would I get it again? Hell, no. My husband went to Rutgers and we used to visit the food trucks for a late night snack when we were dating. We moved to California, but on a recent trip back to the area, we were excited to revisit this past-time of our youth. We were sad to see that the trucks had been replaced by a college building, and the businesses moved to this new spot. I don't know if it was just the now location, or the different ambiance, or maybe just the fact that my stomach isn't 20 years old anymore, but it wasn't the same. The Fat Cat is my go to and my husband got the Fat Darrel this time around. They weren't horrible, but overall, it is really what you'd expect. A few friends and I walked in around 8PM on Sunday and it was not crowded at all. The place only seats about 20 people max with 3 large tables. The manager was awesome and recommended some sandwiches as it was our first time. After doing some research, I found that the Fat Darrell was pretty popular as well as the Fat Filipino. My boyfriend and I ordered those two sandwiches and my two other friends ordered the Fat Elvis and the Fat Johnny. Overall I think the subs were dry due to the fries on top. If possible I would ask for the fries on the side. Fat Darrel ($6.99) This is the sub I ordered and I thought was the best tasting. It tasted just like a chicken parm. It has chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, fries, and marinara sauce. The fries did make a dry but overall enjoyed this sub the best. Yesterday, Hoagie Haven, Today, the progeny left by the grease trucks that started it all. R U Hungry's brick and mortar location is the result of over 40 years of Fat Sandwich cultural cultivation. Given my friend introducing me to his favorite Fat sandwich shop, we decided we should see where it started as well. For the visit i went big yet again, opting into a Fat Knight, Loaded Fries, and a Peanutbutter Chocolate Milkshake, each of which were phenomenal in their own ways. I had the least expectation of the shake which turned out to be fantastic- i'm admittedly a sucker for chocolate and peanut butter together, but the shake was a cut above your typical pizza-joint shake, nice and thick, creamy texture, and very rich, by the time i was finished eating and chatting with my friend i was half tempted to order a second shake. The Fat Knight was solid, sandwiches are built thick, and are a lot heavier than i had expected. R U Hungry has a challenge to eat 5 of their sandwiches in 45 Minutes- and believe me that'd be a challenge with just how dense the food is. The marinara and steak were the MVP's that tied the sandwich together (The sauce surprised me with how good it was) with the roll, and fries playing an excellent backup- the chicken and mozzarella blended in with some of the other flavors but thats expected, all in all the sandwich was fantastic but another item stole the show... Loaded, French fries, and R U Hungry makes fantastic french fries, they came out perfectly for the sandwich, and the order or loaded. Fries themselves weren't even the best part, while the cheese sauce used wasn't the best in the world- the chili and turkey bacon used here are PHENOMENAL. R U Hungry should seriously consider selling just chili with soaked bacon and onion as a standalone item. I found myself sitting there savoring my forkfuls eyes closed. Order speed was kind of weird, sandwiches were done in the blink of an eye, but the shake, and loaded fries took a bit of time. We rolled up quite late around 12, and there were only a few other patrons that popped in during our stay. Place is fantastic for late night dining though, a lot of places quality of service declines during late night hours not here- staff was super friendly, the employees clearly cared about the consumer experience and asked for feedback a couple of times during the visit to make sure everything was good, and believe me it was- food was fantastic. R U Hungry was better than i had expected it to be, and exceeded every expectation by a magnitude. Despite its distance from me, i think ill be going again. Possibly more than a few times, and seeing just how far i can get in 45 minutes to devouring 5 sandwiches.. Stopped at R U Hungry on Friday afternoon for lunch. Shared the Fat Mojo and Fat Fillippino. Quality R U Hungry stands as the last reminder of the golden days of fat sandwiches in New Brunswick. Delicious sandwiches that took all your favorite greasy, fattening, fried favorites and loaded them on a huge chunk of bread. Now a brick and mortar shop, they still sling the famous sandwiches, along with a bunch of other treats, but not with the same level of mystique. We ordered the Fat Mojo, my long-time favorite, and the Fat Fillippino, which has become the most popular today. The Fat Mojo takes chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, and french fries, puts them on a roll and soaks them in honey mustard. And while it has a lot of fried goodness, the chicken was not very good and the bread felt stale. And on a typical night that may make no difference to a patron, but during lunchtime it did. The Fat Fillippino meanwhile, combined cheesesteak and gyro, then threw on chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks. And while this sandwich had a little more texture and flavor, again the stale bread soured the sandwich. Quantity One sandwich can easily sop up an entire nights worth of bad decisions. The combination of carbs and protein and then more carbs makes any sandwich a challenge to finish. Value The fat sandwiches range from $7.50 to $9. And while the restaurant has saved the tables and covered the walls with pictures and memorabilia, it lacks the same charm of its hay-day. What is the fun if you don't have another fat sandwich spot yelling to you why they are better choice for the evening. But nevertheless you will find plenty of college kids camped out eating and doing homework. Crowd Considering college was out for break and it was the middle of the day, I felt they had a solid flow of people coming in and out. As a 24-hour greasy food spot, late nights and weekends will always find a line out the door, but it seems the its reputation keeps it busy at all times. Service You won't find wise-guys slinging sandwiches, it is just workers trying to get everyone in and out quickly. And they did do a solid job at preparing our food fast. Parking No longer does a large parking lot surround the grease trucks. Instead large buildings surround the restaurant and street parking is the only option. I give it a 4 star because I definitely wouldn't eat here sober during a weeknight. It's super loud and the customers are usually impolite and situationally unaware because most are drunk college kids. The service is extremely fast here. They're definitely on top of their stuff. Five of us drove down today for the last day RU Hungry will be on this site as they are moving all the trucks to put up yet one more building on this site. I split a Fat Darryl and Fat Bitch with a co-worker and it was as good (and bad) as ever. I don't want to sound too corny here, but I spent a LOT of money here as a student stumbling back to the bus stop after leaving the bars and RU Hungry and the other trucks will be missed by today's students. The deliciously greasy Fat Cats (when I was a student they ONLY had Fat Cats that you could add just about anything to) probably saved dozens of hangovers-or at least made them less severe. C'mon-1:30am, 8-10 beers in, and you order a Fat Cat (two burgers, cheese, fries, and ketchup) and add a fried egg and pork roll? Or Chili? Yeah-back when I had a metabolism worth a damn I could do that. Really bummed that RU Hungry will no longer be at this location as I've been coming here since 1990 to get my fix. Wow I'm very impressed! Hands down starting with the easy ordering online to the amazing customer service especially at 3am! This place is such a great gift to NJ! I ordered a strawberry Oreo milkshake it was freshly made not to thick not to liquidy it was the perfect milkshake and the lamb platter I ordered was amazing great flavor great portions! Even the fries weren't really too crispy and felt a little too soft but even that was passable considering it was meshed together with everything else.
