I sat at the counter at lunch time, and it took more than five minutes for the server to acknowledge my presence. My cheese omelette and home fries arrived after twelve minutes, and they were cold. The toast was also white bread, and I had asked for rye bread. This was an easy order, and I was at the counter. The vanilla egg cream was good though. It's pretty difficult though to goof up a vanilla egg cream in the NY Metro area. Next time, I'll hit the diner two blocks away on Yonkers Avenue. The service is better there. read more

I love the fact that the owner/manager recognizes me, and orders my food for me as I walk in. (And before you make assumptions, I've only been maybe 10 times over 2 years). She seats me in the same location and always stops by to visit over the course of the meal. In addition, they have some wonderful desserts. It's always difficult to resist temptation when looking at those firm meringues and gooey brownies. Of course, if you're into the basic "diner cookie", they have those aplenty, as well. Mike, one of the owners, was a Mr. Know-it-all. My friend ordered a Dry Martini with little vermouth. Mike brings over a small glass (not a martini glass) with 1 shot of Gin and 1 shot vermouth. My friend explains that this is not a dry martini, but Mike tried to explain that he's right. (WRONG! Mike needs to use google). Next I ordered a well-done pork chop with carrots and mash potatoes. This review is only based on their burgers. We came here late at night after some time in the casino. All 4 of us ordered their burgers and I wanted mine with curly fries. When the food arrived, mine burger was paired with regular french fries and not the curly fries that I wanted. The waitress told me she would get me the curly fries right away and to keep the French fries too. More fries yes! Our burgers were fresh, juicy and delicious. Saturday morning people were waiting in a line that stretched out the door. Parking lot is packed cars. They handle large parties in expedient manner. The worst part about your phone dying is not that you miss a turn and make an unexpected detour into Yonkers. It's not that you can't check Facebook, or message with your friends. But it's the fact that you can't check Yelp! Low and behold, I found myself in this situation today, hungry and looking for some place to grab a quick bite on my way down. I'll have to admit, it was a bit exciting, as I felt all adventurous walking into a random diner off the freeway, not knowing what to expect. Ohhhh, the chills! But don't like the "voted best diner 6 years in a row" sign out front fool you - this is a meal I rue and I curse today's smartphones for their shoddy battery life. The food her is barely edible - at least, the burgers are. At $5.50 for a dry, tasteless burger, that doesn't even come with lettuce or tomato (seriously, they charge you $3 extra for this apparently), this was a sad, sad excuse for a burger when it arrived at my table. This was the most naked I've ever seen a burger, and it was like walking into a strip club on the wrong side of time - it's not a good look! Yesterday, after a very long day my son and I decided to eat out and he found the Raceway Diner on google. Excellent choice! The staff was very nice and welcoming, our waitress was absolutely awesome, and the food was good. It was not even a long waiting period to receive our respective meals. Well as far as diners go, this is pretty much standard with your options. Plenty of omelette, basic egg/sides dishes to choose from, and some lighter fare for the health conscious individuals. They get quite crowded on weekends with Empire Casino being across the street, so expect a wait if you're looking to sleep in a bit before going. I'm not sure if they offer other meals throughout the day like most diners I'm accustom to (offering breakfast, lunch, or dinner items all day long) but only the breakfast menu was available on my visit. The Raceway diner is okay for its convenience and accessibility, but not much else. My main problem with this diner is inconsistency--sometimes you're going to get a great waitress and great food, other times--more often than not--you're going to get lousy food and inattentive (nonexistent?) service. I've had a few meals here, and the only one I would recommend is the Balboa sandwich. It was tasty and they generously piled the meat. Another time, I ordered a chicken salad sandwich to go. This place REALLY needs to revisit their chicken salad recipe. It was bland (read: flavorless), and had no texture at all. Aside from that, I've tried a regular cheeseburger (and paid something wild like an extra three dollars for lettuce and fries?). Now, let me just say that if I'm paying $10 for a cheeseburger with fries, it better be a damn good burger and fries. Otherwise, what would stop me from paying half the price and going to McDonald's, where they'll throw in a drink with the mediocre burger and fries, and I don't have to tip? This burger was not even bad, it was borderline gross. Extremely greasy, the meat looked gray, and I barely touched it. The fries were nothing special. If I were a waitress and someone took two bites out of a cheeseburger and told me I could take it away, I would at least ask them if something was wrong with it. This waitress disappeared for literally thirty minutes after bringing us our food, without even coming back to ask how everything tasted. We tried to get the attention of someone who could help us, but everyone seemed to be too busy or lazy to care. When she finally remembered us, she simply said, "Are you done?" and took my plate away. Apparently they're used to people not eating their food. Another time that I was in, I ordered a brownie for dessert. I seriously had to convince my waitress that I did not want ice cream on top of it. It's okay to recommend something, but after I say no, that should be that. It's not good business to make me feel like I'm getting something crappy because I'm "just" getting a brownie. I don't know why this place is only getting three stars. I went there for brunch and it was fantastic. My friend and I ordered a ton of food. (Two eggs, homefries and toast for $4.25? MAKE THAT A DOUBLE.) And we also got mimosas which were strong and also dirt cheap. It's a diner, so there's the classic chrome everywhere and booths galore. Atrocious service. Diners serve diner food, so I don't have high expectations there. But for Pete's sake give decent service. We endured being ignored for the first half of our time there where we literally thought we'd have to tackle someone to get hot water and lemon for tea. THEN, we were interrupted mid sentence several times by a staff so zealous to give us more coffee that we thought that there was a contest to pour the most refills or there was a hidden camera. How annoying to be making a point to a client and have the guy interject "MORE COFFEE?" so I lose my train of thought. Not once. Not twice. 3 times. And it wasn't even busy- they should know what is going on at the table. What didn't help was that it was a different server each time, so maybe they are doing it by committee, which clearly doesn't work. Here's my story. Hubby and I went to get something to eat at the Raceway Diner. We go there pretty often. After ordering our meals our waitress is talking to another one of the waiters and as they are both looking at us all I can hear is "yeah that's them" I don't think much about it. As our dinner comes out we are almost asaulted with the plates.as she almost throws them on the table with her nasty attitude and her sucking her teeth. I was still going to give her an ok tip because the service even with the attitude was ok. However when we get our check, this bitch already added her tip in. Now I can understand with partys of 5 or more including a tip on the check. But we are 2 people. But they said on the back of their menu it says that the servers have the option to add a 15% tip to your check. What kind of bullshit is that. If you do a good job then you get a good tip. If you do a crappy job then guess what...your getting a crappy tip. I don't think it should be legal that they can add their tip (what they think they are entitled to) to a check of a party of 2. And to add...as we were walking up to pay ..our waitress was hiding behind the counter like the bitch she is. read more

It is close to the Wells Fargo bank I am using, so you are most likely to find me having breakfast here on Monday morning. It is pretty relaxed on Mondays, so I have the quiet and the space that I need to go over some paper work, and read and send emails. Reasonable prices, and my breakfast that include salad, eggs, toasts and coffee usually end with 20$ including the tip. Some Diners are fantastic, most suck. This place isn't bad- they've gotten better. My previous review was pretty brutal, but back then, so was their quality control. Staff works hard, the service is great. Food is good. Convenient, central location. I like this as an after hours place or for when I can't decide where to go. I adore the staff. The busboys and waiters are sweet and work hard. There are many establishments on Mclean Ave that rock and this place is an alternative for when the bar scene wouldn't be appropriate. I wouldn't say these guys have the best cuisine but when you're with a group and need something in the middle, it suffices. Not usually the first place I head to, but as I said, it's good for when you don't know what to do, or need something to eat around midnight when you've got writers block. We're considering making this our weekend diner. So far, no real complaints and its an easy commute to get to. The diner is across the street from the Casino, it is usually crowded. i will say that the parking lot is a little tight and I can see parking being a but problematic. Its off of a busy road too. Anyway upon entering, we were sat quickly which was nice. We had a 9 month old with us so we need to be relocated twice. The first table, they directed us to would of had the high chair in the main aisle with staff going back and forth with plates *hazard). So then we were seated int he back room along the windows. It was a small two seater table but the baby's chair was out of the way which was our priority. Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw the booth in the back corner of the room open up. I gestured to the bus boy who showing him the baby and he quickly ran over and turned over the table for us. I appreciated his rush of service. He even moved the high chair for us which was great. Next, the waiter came over right away. He offered us beverages and we ordered two hot coffees and two waters. They were brought over right away. He also brought over fresh milk! Thanks! We were at a loss of what to order. There is literally everything you could want on their menu. I ended up ordering the chilli bowl with cheese and red onions, with a side of fries. The chilli was pretty good and filled me right up. I wasn't expecting such a big bowl. My fries were a little crunchy and stuck together. Not really soft enoughtto give the baby more than a fry or two. My boyfriend ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a side salad instead of fries. He must of loved the burger because it was gone before I got to really see it. His salad was all romaine lettuce with a slice of red onion two green peppers two tomatoes and two cucumbers. He was not wowed with the salad and was a bit disappointed. I thought it was fine, ceasar dressing was more of a vinegarette was really my only caution. I thought for a diner salad it was fine. I'm sure he'll get over it. We did loose our waiter, which was a little frustrating. I had to ask a bus boy for more water and napkins. While we liked being left to eat and tend to the baby it would of been nice to get checked on atleast once. We almost forgot we didn't pay at one point....but we paid! I don't really do diner much anymore, so my twice-yearly visit kind of sucked the other day. I can't say for sure what happened, but, sometime a couple years ago I had a really terrific fresh burger here. So I've been back a couple of times since. The place is always clean, the folks at the counter are super friendly, but I discovered the food really isn't all that good. It's not an inexpensive diner, so when you get a little cup filled with that horrible acidic coleslaw that you can get at any Kennedy Fried Chicken or a jar pickle or the very cheapest onion rings that you would find, again, at Kennedy Fried Chicken, you think twice about coming back here. Coleslaw is cheap and easy to make and it's easy to make delicious. People appreciate homemade. Big barrels of delicious sour & half sour pickles from a local pickler- way better than cheap, fluorescent green jarred pickles. Battered Onion Rings, not 1960s flavored bread rings. Again, nice people, super clean dining room and good service, but it's just not a very good diner in a city that invented *good* diner. They get points for being open 24 hours in the godforsaken land of Yonkers. That's good. But they need to step up their culinary game. In fact, I suggest the Raceway's management have lunch or dinner at the Georgia Diner on Queens Boulevard. The difference in the food, for the same prices, will blow their minds and change their game. I wish them well and hope they step it up a little bit. I was in the food for popcorn shrimp late at night so I went to this diner across the way from the Empire Casino and race track (hence the name "raceway diner", see what they did there?). Went to this diner after an event at the Empire Raceway Casino which is very conveniently across the street. We were sat right away which was nice. Service was fast considering it was after 1am and there were a good amount of people there. I ordered the Patty Melt with curly fries. The sandwich came open face which was a little annoying, but not a big deal. The "sautéed onions" we're sooo oily and all cut up so lazy. There were all clumped up and over cooked. The meat was actually cooked the way I ordered it, which was nice. I definitely couldn't finish it because the sandwich was just too oily. The onion rings were actually pretty good. Poor customer experience provided by waiter and manager. I ordered coffee and my favorite omelette, asking for the meal prepared a certain way. When the waiter, Ariel, delivered my food, he did it practically running by my table. It was immediately apparent the food was not prepared the way I asked -- but there was no waiter to be found in the second it took me to look down at my plate. The waiter did not check on me, returning a few minutes after I finished my meal, save for the item that wasn't prepared right. He then denied it was incorrect. I politely explained why it was wrong, and he said, "well it takes the kitchen a lot of time to do it that way." The waiter did not offer to send the item back to be fixed, instead asking if I was done. At the register, the manager recognized me and said hello. He did not ask how my meal was. I told him what had happened, and that I did not finish my meal. By the time any wait staff were near me, I had been finished eating for a few minutes. He did apologize, but said it was my fault for not searching for waitstaff to send my food back. The manager did not even offer me a replacement or dessert, or even to knock the coffee off my bill. He did not seem concerned about my negative experience. I have noticed inconsistency with waitstaff service in the past, but this was the worst. This diner was always a handy standby, but the customer service is inconsistent. Even the price for the same meal I always order varies.
