Bought a Groupon for a pasta sampler [1 arrabiata sauce, 1lb fresh pasta (1/2 spinach, 1/2 rosemary, 1 box of ravioli (truffle mushroom)]. I had to truly resist buying every single variety of every pasta/ravioli that they offered! Once you walk in, you're greeted by the amazing smell of semolina and olive oil! The women behind the counters greet you warmly and 2 were quick to offer any assistance/answer any questions. I had many and they were so sweet and patient to answer them all on my request for recommendations!! I got my pastas cut and prepped to order on those old timey pasta machines and she wrote down exactly how to cook everything. Had the rosemary with some of the sauce and it was DELECTABLE. I go out of my way to go here. After having fresh pasta from Raffetto's (and at affordable prices!) I don't see a reason to ever eat the dry grocery store stuff ever again. You can choose your desired type of dough as well as cut- fresh is the way to go, but the frozen ravs are delicious too. Raffetto's is one of the few remaining small-time institutions that make NYC so great. We have bought sauces, homemade pastas(including all kinds of varieties of ravioli), and turkey meatballs to make wonderful, wonderful dishes with at home. Cash only, but everything is pretty cheap. Yesterday, I slaved over a hot stove and stewed a bolognese sauce until it achieved enlightenment (about 4 hours). I purposely made it a day in advance to let the flavors get better acquainted overnight. This morning I walked a couple of blocks to Raffetto's, a NYC pasta institution that dates back to 1906. These guys were making pasta when your dad was just a twinkle in your grandpappy's ballsack. The place is very unassuming from the outside- a small storefront sitting beneath a green awning- but what is inside is nothing short of magic. The smell- oh, the smell. Me: "No Michael (I call myself by my full name when I'm being serious). Do not be deterred by the countless possibilities this store holds. Do not look the fresh mutz in the eyes. You are on a mission for pasta." Looking around, I saw an endless spectrum of raviolis (from lobster to pumpkin) and some fresh spaghetti. However, today I was in the market for a flat, broad noodle to sop up my luxurious sauce. Me: "S'cuse me. You got any pappardelle?" Lil Italian lady (LIL): "Yeah. How much you need?" Me: "Eh, pound oughtta do it." She disappeared into a walk-in fridge and emerged with a box full of flat noodle sheets. The LIL then produced a box cutter, which she used to slice my noodles. After free-styling my pappardelle with surgical precision, she wrapped em up and looked at me skeptically: "Hey, you ever make these before?" Me: "Uh, yeah, i mean..." LIL interrupts: "Hey, listen. Got a googleoffers here before my trip which made the experience more amazing! I went into the shop to use my coupon, expecting a lot from the reviews. My expectations were exceeded! There's sundried tomatoes ( a bag for $1.50 ish). There's sauces (around $4.50 for a small plastic tub). There's already made pasta, dried pasta, frozen ravioli (big and small)! EVERYTHING you need for a pasta meal! They even have an area where they can cut your pasta for you in any of the usual sizes and in different flavors: squid ink, tomato, wheat, egg, etc etc. I got a pound of linguini for $2.07 cut right there and then. I got some mini pumpkin raviolis for $4.05. My bf likes their already made pasta salad and asks why can't my pasta salad taste like this. I agree! And I bought 2 bags of sundried tomatoes for $1.27 each. I love this place. I'm so glad that googleoffers introduced me here :) I will be coming back! read more

Truffle Ravioli. 7 minutes in the pot. A little olive oil, salt & pepper. Perfect dinner for $12. Such a cool place with phenomenal prices for what you get. Just make sure to ask the ladies behind the counter for cooking directions if you are new to the fresh pasta game since the times are a little different than standard dry noodles: it would be shame to mess up the preparation of of these treats. I can't stop raving about this place to anyone who will listen. It's a slice of old New York as only the old timers know. Insanely cheap prices for fresh pasta ($2.50 a lb...cheaper then that Buitoni crap), tortellini, and raviolis, and the staff is so knowledgeable (and surprisingly friendly!) that they even have their favorite brands of San Marzano tomatoes that they recommend. While we weren't immediately greeted and helped (which we thought would happen, according to other reviews), we quickly figured out where the fresh ravioli was stacked and hemmed and hawed: wild mushroom, meat and spinach, or pumpkin? Because my partner is deeply sentimental about the season, we went with the latter. A staffer helped us pair it with a great walnut sauce. All I have to say is that this place is AMAZING. I had heard of this place from a friend but had never been there before yesterday. I didn't really know what to expect but when I walked in, I was in heaven. Not only do they fresh cut the pasta for you, but you can almost get it in any flavor and in any way you want. Not only were the prices incredibly affordable (we got 3 pounds of pasta, fresh sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella for $14), the staff was very nice and also extremely helpful. We inquired about what kind of pasta and what kind of sauce, and a couple other things, and they were great about giving us tips on how to cook. I recently tried to make pasta from scratch. With Thomas Keller's 7 yolk pasta recipe on hand and a rolling pin, I rolled, pulled, and wore my arm muscles out attempting to make something mediocre that I've now discovered I could buy gourmet for $3.50 a pound. To say I'm upset that I didn't discover this place earlier is an understatement. There's a whole menu of flavors (I got the black pepper and rosemary), and a variety of pasta widths you can choose from. They'll cut them fresh to order, on a machine that's been around for a hundred years. Watching that machine slice sheets of pasta alone is worth the trip. Fresh cheeses, sauces, ravioli, and even specialty "00" flour if you're into making your own pizza and pasta are all available for cheap. read more

I've never had anything like it before. $5.95 buys you 48 pieces of ravioli...plenty! they recommend for freshness you keep it for only 3 days in the fridge. she was right again. Hands down the best Italian food store in the city. I have been here several times always for the fresh pasta and sauces (try the arabiatta sauce, it is heaven). The pumpkin tortellini is outstanding, as is the plain cheese kind. But last night's dinner has simply blown all other Raffeto's acquisitions out of the water. I got a box of fresh seafood ravioli in squid ink dough. I asked the very helpful woman working at the register how to prepare it, and she said to eat it with just some butter and lemon or fresh chives. So this is exactly how I prepared it. I've been coming here for more than 20 years so yeah, I like it. When my parents were alive, I would pick up pasta from Raffetto's (and bread from Zito's) and with mom's sauce, ah good memories. I've tried most of the pastas and love them all. The ravioli are excellent too. I used to make them for my kids lunch as well. It wasn't the healthiest meal but I had to make extra so they could share them with their friends. My daughter loves their prepared meals as well. They have a large selection of olive oils and the prices on all the foods are reasonable, and not just by Manhattan standards. If Raffetto's ever closes, the Village will have lost another institution that makes it the best part of NYC. read more

I'll make it this simple: You want to make pasta tonight. There's two options. You can buy a box of basic pasta at a grocery, and a jar of Ragu. Or you can buy some premium-brad pasta at a grocery store, and some premium brand sauce like Rao's. Or, if you're in the Village you can go to Raffetto's. The prices here are just absurd. For the price of the basic box pasta and awful jar sauce at Gristedes, you can have fresh made pasta, cut on that crazy 100-year old machine, and then homemade sauce that shatters your mind. They do a whole bunch of varieties. E.g. they make buckwheat pasta. They make ravioli. It's as good as that famous place on Arthur Avenue. But everything's great and cheap and the place is old fashioned and everyone's super nice and there's never much of a line. So look I understand. It's Tuesday night. You're tired. You're risk averse. You just want easy. You just want to make your regular old pasta. I'm telling you though - do Raffetto's just once and it will change your life read more

I would not call myself a pasta lover in any sense of the term. I've tried it at many places (some renowned for their fresh pasta) and it all tastes the same to me. After (sceptically) trying various pastas at Raffetto's, I'm a changed man. They make the most incredible pastas I have ever had. It's really ruined me for future pasta anywhere else. I tried two different kinds of linguinis, asparagus ravioli, gnocchi, and one of their sauces. Everything was mind blowingly incredible. I bought some roasted red pepper, mozzarella and basil ravioli and WOW! I was really impressed with how strong the flavors were. It's the kind of pasta you don't really want to put sauce on because it doesn't need any extra flavor. All I did was sprinkle some parmesan on top and voila a meal in 10 minutes! I also bought their mushroom pesto, which I was curious about. It's good, but the flavor is subtle and you could easily lose it in a dish with lots of other ingredients. It's a shame I don't live nearby or I'd have even more of a pasta addiction! read more

You walk in and the aroma of homemade tomato sauce wafts through the air. I ordered fresh spinach lasagna noodles that were made right then and there...wrapped beautifully in the wax paper and rolled up in crisp white paper. I asked the lady that was helping my friend and I if we needed to cook the noodles and she said that we didn't need to (YES!!!) I just had to be sure to put one layer of sauce on the bottom of the pan before placing the noodles in. They have homemade items in the refrigerated section that you can take home (if I was visiting NY longer I would have) and the noodles were so reasonably priced around $7.50...and I had enough leftover noodles to make another 9x12 lasagna...everyone loved the lasagna that I made for dinner. Raffeto's sells the best imported and home made Italian food in the city. Romana, who owns the store has appeared on the Food Channel numerous times to demonstrate how she makes her own pasta dishes. When you shop at Raffetto's you feel like you are in Italy. It's hard to even find products with English wording on them. Many tours visit because it's one of the oldest and well known food stores in the area. I personally go crazy for the lasagna, ravioli, manicotti (all made from scratch), and imported Italian tuna. This is the kind of store that makes New York City so special and unique. If you like Italian food, Raffetto's should be priority on your list of places to visit!! read more
