Maybe the best Cuban food and ambience in Tampa. We came for lunch. We were greeted and seated immediately (the place was less than half full). We sat inside, but the outdoor patio looked absolutely delightful, if you happen to be here in the spring or fall. The staff mostly does not speak English. Not a huge problem for us, and also, the menu is bilingual, but go prepared if you don't speak Spanish or at least Spanglish. We ordered: the lamb stew, the vaca frita, the masa de cerdo. The mains all come with a side dish, so we got white rice, black beans, and platanos/maduros. We added to that avocado and fufu. That food was way more than enough for 4 people to share and then take home a lot of leftovers. The kids also got batidos. Everything was delicious. I thought the fufu was a little sweet for my taste, but otherwise, I'd happily re-order everything else. My son was enamored by the lamb stew and insisted on making a lamb sandwich on Cuban bread with the leftovers for his breakfast the next day. My sister was thrilled by the upscale Cuban food and setting. We'll happily return. I know my parents would love the place, and my husband would appreciate it. read more

We had a terrible experience. We went this passed Wednesday night it was slower night for them. Our waitress seemed very bothered to have to interact with us. When our churrasco came out it was rare and we had asked for medium well since we were sharing it with our daughter. We showed her it was rare and asked if it could be put back on the grill to which she argued that it was medium well. She aggressively picked up the steak off the table and said fine I'll have it put back on the grill for you. We were on vacation and needed dinner close by. We loved this humble Cuban restaurant! We loved it so much we came back for dinner the next night! Raíces Cuban Restaurant looks like a newer spot -- the décor is very nice and the ambience has a lot of potential. The prices are moderate, but there are definitely some areas for improvement. One of the biggest surprises was that entrées only come with one side. If you've ever been to a traditional Cuban restaurant, you know that rice and black beans are a staple combination -- so having to pay extra for the beans feels very out of place. The same goes for sides like plantains and yuca, which are also à la carte. I ordered the Churrasco (skirt steak), and while the flavor was good, the presentation missed the mark. The steak still had membranes attached and was served in chunks, which took away from the overall experience. The Flan was ok & served in a bowl, which is an unusual choice for this kind of dish. Lastly, the Cuban coffee came unsweetened, which again felt untraditional -- normally, it's pre-sweetened as part of the authentic flavor and experience. Overall, I'd rate it about a 3 out of 5. The place has promise and a nice atmosphere, but it needs a few key adjustments in both food presentation and authenticity to truly stand out. One and done at Raíces on Dale Mabry. Who pays $175 (without tip) for Spanish food? Apparently we did -- and it was absolutely not worth it. This was for 3 adults and one child (who had rice and eggs for $13). Adding rice and beans to a dinner plate was an extra $6, the pork was dry, and when I asked for mojo, they brought plain onions with no sauce. Out of 3 plates, 2 were barely touched, and no one from staff asked if anything was wrong. We also ordered only one sangria, so this bill was almost entirely food. At these prices and with this level of quality, we will never go back. In Tampa, you're much better off sticking with Arco Iris, Caribbean Twist, or La Teresita.
