I used to lived in Albany and the Chinese culinary scene wasn't nearly as robust as now. There are many Asian cuisine restaurants that been popping up everywhere. Rain Modern is no exception. I wish I had his many choices when I used to live here. On the way back from a long weekend from Lake George, we stopped by Rain to get some lunch and also gave us an opportunity to catch up with old friends. As you walk in the restaurant, it was very clean and inviting. Decors were simple to stay modern as their title suggested. We were seated right away next to the window. For lunch on a weekday, they also offer dim sum off the menu. For appetizer, I ordered off the dim sum menu. Soup dumplings (must have item) sticky rice in lotus leaf, ha Kar, shiu Mai, pork congee with thousand year old eggs. All the dim sum was delicious, my 7 year old son devoured one of the sticky rice on his own among other items. For main entree, I order family style for everyone to share. I ordered sesame chicken for my kids, pork pan fried noodle, slice fish in spicy sauce, sautéed string beans and roast duck noodle soup. All the food was very good, although I ordered a little too much since I was really hungry while ordering. I had to packed all the left over home and had them for dinner. Overall, Rain delivers on all fronts if you are looking for authentic Chinese food. From taste to presentation, it looks and feel like you are dining in Hong Kong. A group of us who were interested in trying dim sum met on an early (for me) Sunday morning at 11 am to find out if the newest provider of dim sum served it from push carts and if it should be a place to return to. Bottom line: not enough sales volume to support carts constantly weaving their way among the tables; and yes, we will return. While the image of Asian ladies pushing carts filled with different dim sum emerging from the kitchen is a memorable Chinatown delight, I won't complain about the lack of its presence. By placing our orders with a server, we were able to feel confident that each order would be freshly prepared by the kitchen and brought directly to our table without having to wait for a cart that had what you were wanting/willing to eat. With nine people at our table we were able to sample a decent variety of dishes priced at either $3.75 or $4.75. Among them were: Pork Siu Mai;Beef Short Rib w/ black pepper sauce; Chicken Feet; Turnip Cake; Fried Taro Puff; Fried Shrimp & Pork dumpling; Egg Custard; Sesame Seed Balls; Shrimp dumpling; Beef Tripe w/ Ginger Sauce; Stuffed Eggplant w/ Shrimp; We also had some items off the regular menu that were very good: Sautéed Pea Shoots, Shanghai Soup Dumplings, and Crab and Fish Maw soup. For me the highlights of all this were the turnip cake, shrimp dumplings, stuffed eggplant, and the pea shoots. My only real disappointment was with the soup dumplings because my dumpling had lost all its soup inside before I even picked it up. Oh, and I still don't care for chicken feet - twice in twenty years is enough. While a number of the people at our table had varying reasons for saying they were somewhat disappointed, all said they would return. It seems their disappointment was due to their having been spoiled by prior experiences in Chinatowns like NYC and San Francisco. Service was excellent, the delivery of our food was well paced so that nothing got cold waiting to be tasted. Only one variety of tea was served. Dim Sum is served only on weekends between 9 and 4 pm. While the restaurant was basically empty and quiet when we arrived Sunday morning, it began to fill up around noon and the noise level increased dramatically to a level that made it difficult to hear anyone else at our table other than the person sitting directly next to me. The regular Chinese menu is available every day they are open. The future looks bright for dim sum. read more

As a New Yorker who grew up having Chinese food in Manhattan's Chinatown at some of its most famous emporiums, Esther Eng's, Bobo's, the Silver Palace etc. and my neighborhood favorite, Fong's, on Sugar Hill, I always long for the familiar taste of unadulterated food. Rain comes 90+% close to the true Chinese kitchen of the 1950s. And that is a high compliment! I reserve five stars for the meals prepared in the back of Backtong Eng's laundry - fresh vegetables and tender chicken served in a large platter from which each of us would pluck with old wooden chopsticks. Gone are the Chinese laundries that provided pressed starched sheets and uniform blouses and indulged a Hispanic kid from the Heights to partake in their backroom lunch feasts. My husband and 2-year-old stumbled upon this gem walking around downtown Albany. My toddler loved the lo mein, which they were nice enough to customize with his requests veggies. The adults both got chicken dishes which were delicious. The ambiance is very pleasant and calming. We were warmly greeted just as we entered and the servers were kind and attentive the whole meal, even bringing our kiddo orange slices as an extra. Prices were a deal. They even escorted us out the back so we didn't have to deal with our stroller on the stairs. Highly recommend all around, especially for families with kids! read more

It's more like 4.5. The food was amazing. The quality of dim sum was much higher than the most dim sum places I've experienced. Though I'm not a huge dim sum lover, I really enjoyed their shrimp dumplings and pork shu mai. They tasted fresh, juicy and soft. I also loved the healthy steamed vegetables and shrimps, with yummy garlic source on the side. Romantic, modern and classy decor. Bathroom was very nice, too. The shrimp steam dumplings were mushy; the fried rice was wet; the service was okay partially because it was very few guests but we still looked for our waiter a few times. He didn't check in at all, however a table adjacent to us arrived at least 15 minutes after us with a party of 5 versus my party of 2 and they were catered to the entire time. I guess it helps when you're Asian and patron a Chinese restaurant. A few waiters actually checked in with them including ours. Also, a family style meal with starters was served to them before us while we were waiting for just chicken and broccoli. I would understand if we were waiting on lamb chops or steak to cook since that would take longer, but they actually had several beef dishes. I will not visit this restaurant again. Best experience at a Chinese restaurant I've ever had. The interior is so nice and clean that my parents thought this place was newly opened but the waitress said that they've been open for four years! For me, cleanliness is #1 for a good restaurant experience. The service was EXCELLENT. Our waitress (Elyzabeth) was so enthusiastic and friendly. My parents REALLY loved the fresh clams in black bean sauce. We also ordered the mapo tofu and braised pork belly. I don't really like mapo tofu but everyone else at the table loved it. In my opinion, it was a little bland compared to everything else (I have a high sodium intake). The pork belly was really really good! A bit fatty and pretty salty but it came with bok Choi which was perfect. We even ordered the pork belly bao and the bun was so soft ^^ I highly recommend it. My dad also ordered the hot and sour soup and the egg drop soup. In my opinion, they were pretty standard but still good :) As for the soup dumplings, I'm used to soup dumplings in NYC so in comparison, they fell a little short here but my family still enjoyed them! Albany has upped her game and Rain has become one of my top 3 dim sum spots (Ala Shanghai and HK Bistro as other two). Rain has very helpful servers and delivers prompt service. Like with any restaurant I've had things I did not like and things I did: Here are my favorites: Dim sum: Shanghai soup dumplings- pretty decent attempt, sometimes the dough may be a little too thick and chewy 7/10 Fried tofu with garlic - love the texture of tofu and the garlic sauce completely lifts it 8/10 Pork belly bao- flavorful on soft bao but sometimes the pork can be a little chewy 8/10 Entrees Mango chicken- love this dish and the flavors, the chicken is crispy with a delectable sauce 9/10 Peking duck- my favorite entree here, it's beautifully smoked (tip: once you are done, you can ask to have your bones make into soup with bok choy and mushrooms and you can take home - really good broth a day later!) 9/10 Pan fried pork noodle- I love the flavor and texture of meat and vegetable sauce atop crispy egg noodles. My husband wanted to come here for his birthday dinner and I was not disappointed! We were immediately seated and given a hot pot of very good tea. The waiter promptly saw us to give us our menus. We settled on ordering three main dishes (honey walnut shrimp, broccoli beef, and orange chicken). When we told the waiter what we would be ordering, he advised us that the three dishes would likely be too much for us and suggested that we order the side of honey walnut shrimp instead. I really appreciated this because he was right (it was too much food with what we ended up getting) and it cost less money, so I thought it was very nice of him to give us this recommendation. All of the food was delicious. I loved the way that the orange chicken had so much chicken to it rather than just being small pieces of chicken completely breaded in fried crust. The broccoli beef came with a generous amount of broccoli. I did not have any of the honey walnut shrimp but my husband says it was delicious. read more

For $8 to $12, you get a bowl of your choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup (I recommend the egg drop), plus a generous lunch-sized entree with rice. I left feeling full and satisfied with my wok-seared salmon, brown rice, and mixed vegetables. For dinner, I definitely recommend the steamed while flounder with ginger and scallion - a dish we keep coming back for again and again. Surprisingly, it also travels well (for take-out or delivery). The dumplings are also really tasty, although the dough is a bit thicker than I'd prefer. I also really enjoy the scallion pancakes which come with a curry dipping sauce - unexpected and delicious. I was highly impressed with this Asian restaurant in Albany. The service, the ambiance, and the food is fantastic. For an appetizer we had the soup dumplings and they were quite good, but they didn't have much liquid in them like in other restaurants I have had them in. The entrees were amazing. We shared the Shrimp and Lobster Sauce and I was so happy that they had brown rice and it was awesome. We also shared Beef Chow Fun and the noodles were perfectly cooked, the beef tender and flavorful, and the vegetables crisp and fresh. The servers work together as a team because although one server took our order and brought our drinks, many different servers came to the table to ensure that we were happy and brought the food and refills. Came here on 11/18/2013, their grand opening day for an early dinner. Place looks really nice, a classy casual but sophisticated atmosphere to the place. We sat at a window seat facing Lark St. Great view of Lark street. Sort of diagonally across from Bombers Burrito. Ordered hot and sour soup and shrimp and pork wonton soup. I had the wonton soup. Thin wrappers on the wontons, and the broth taste like real broth. Very good. I tried the hot and sour soup, and it had the right amount of sour for a change.. most places seem to leave that out. Also got the Shanghai soup dumplings... they were good, but the wrappers could be thinner and a bit soupier... but decent for this area. Does taste homemade and that's a good thing. The shrimp and bamboo shooters were served in miniature martini class. I would say they are good shrimp dumpling (in the dim sum way) served with a curry sauce on the bottom. A bit unusual but I really enjoyed it. Main course to finish this off we got half peking duck. De-boned duck (except for the leg and wing) with nice and crispy skin. Served with bao (wrap), scallion, and I think bean paste (as opposed to hoisin... but I am not sure). Really really enjoyed that. Clams with black bean sauce was enjoyable too, but probably the only dish served warm and not hot... probably had to do with timing and serving of various dishes. No problem though since I thought they tasted great. Many other classic cantonese food on the menu, and some with a modern twist (for example, the hudson valley foie gras soup dumpling which we did not try... maybe another time). There is a bar, and specialty drink menu, wine, etc. We stuck with standard house tea which was fine. It's a nice place for chinese food and I can see us coming back here - often Off street parking is available. On Lark St that is a really good thing. Place is quiet with relaxing background music... but this is around 5pm. Not sure what the place will be like later at night. Might be a place to hang out and have a cocktail or two. read more
