I got a fusion roll, which had scallop and spicy tuna on it ($16.99 or $17.99)! The rolls were huge though, hard to eat it one bite. The asparagus tasted really unripe or raw to the point that it was bitter. The service felt very attentive. They often came by to refill water. I also don't know why; they asked us at 10:15pm if we wanted to order more food but they say they closed the kitchen at 10pm. So I don't know if they were being goofy or wanted to bait us lol There were a few fruit flies flying around which is odd and not a good sanitary sign. "A pleasant and delicious Thai Food expérience" We walked into Rain for dinner on a busy shopping evening. The restaurant is nestled in the Publix grocery plaza on Cheshire Bridge Road; with plenty of parking stalls around it. We were greeted by what appeared to be the owner/manager upon entry and were sat by the gazebo at the left end of the dining room whereby large padded leather booths overlook the plaza through its floor to ceiling glass windows and wooden shutters. The decor is modern browns and woods with Asian undertones in the form of drill bits on the leather chairs or the rust metal barrels amongst other Knick knacks around the dining room. The ambiance is very cozy casual and we dined on a soundtrack of Diana Krall and Sade style playlist on the speakers. Our meal started with a super light and refreshing. bowl of the lemongrass soup that consisted of Shrimp, kaffir leaves, lime, tomatoes, mushrooms, scallions, cilantro and chili paste ($7.95); wow! Next came the appetizer-sized Rain Salad, that was served in a lovely square ceramic bowl; and was filled with Lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and drizzled with homemade ginger dressing ($4.95); what a nice follow up! Another appetizer; the Panong Gyoza platter ($7.95) came with 5 nicely steamed dumplings that were filled with chicken and vegetables with a side of panang curry sauce - it is definitely a must add to your dining experience if you like gyoza or dumplings in general! Delicious! For the main course, the mildly spicy Basil Seafood bowl strutted down our table immediately after the gyoza. It consisted of Scallops, calamari. shrimps with a nice basil sauce ($24.95). The seafood was lightly pan fried then steamed and came out fork tender while the basil soy sauce base that added the right amount of tanginess to the mix. We chose a plain fried rice side ($4.95) which turned out to be a generous portion of rice with green peas, carrots and eggs; yum! Yum! Yum! We finished our dinner with a mango sticky rice dessert ($7.95) - the sticky rice was nice and warm while the cold, freshly sliced ripened mango slices were a perfect accompaniment to the condensed milk base sauce. Altogether; Rain is a pleasant and delicious Thai food experience on Cheshire Bridge Road; the all-Thai staff was extremely attentive and service was prompt and unhurried. I've eaten here a few times, and it's been OK each time. Mainly come here because it is a friend's go-to sushi place. The sushi is average, not bad but nothing special, although the prices are good so that is in their favor. I've also had a couple of their Thai dishes, like their Panang Curry and Basil chicken, and find them to be fairly typical Thai dishes, although a bit too salty and not as spicy as I would like even when I order it hot. We were disappointed in the service at Rain. First, they served shrimp with my massaman curry when both my fiancee and I clearly told the server that I'm allergic to shrimp. They also forgot one piece of sushi and the wasabi in my Sushi & Massaman combo. Then, when we were close to finishing our meals, I noticed they gave special Thai menus to Thai customers at adjacent tables. When I asked about the special menu, a server told me they don't give those menus to "Chinese and Americans because they don't like it." What? I asked to see the menu and it had some interesting and unique dishes. I told the server I would've ordered off the special menu had I known about it. She apologized. Instead, we got "stuck" with the restaurant's standard Thai and sushi fare. Generally, I've never been too impressed with Thai and sushi restaurants. The food is typically average and run-of-the-mill; I'd include Rain in that category. Had I tried the special Thai menu, my opinion of this place could be completely different. FYI, the special Thai menu ("Rain Saturday") is served during Saturday lunch only, so take advantage of it if you can. The menu is written in both Thai and English. Most dishes cost only about $8-9 each. After seeing the menu, I remembered one of my Thai friends telling me about it; I'd just forgotten. I have a Thai last name and I understand Thai, but they still didn't give me a Thai menu (to be "fair," I don't look Thai and when I go to Thailand, most Thai people see me as Chinese). Regardless, who cares if a customer is Thai? Just give everyone both menus and let them decide what they want to order. The standard menu is sizable with a large selection of both Thai cuisine and sushi. The lunch menu, where all items are under $10 each, is honored seven days a week. At dinnertime, expect to spend anywhere from about $12-25 per Thai entree. As for sushi, in line with most other "Thai and sushi" restaurants, colorful, Americanized rolls packed with all sorts of ingredients are the specialty ($10-13 each for most rolls) with a basic selection of nigiri and sashimi. Here's what we had: * Sushi & Massaman ($11.95) - 4 pieces of California roll, 4 pieces of sushi, and massaman curry with chicken and shrimp * Sushi & Pad Thai ($11.95) - 4 pieces of California roll, 3 pieces of sushi, and pad Thai with chicken and shrimp * Thai tea ($2.49) * Special Thai iced dessert ($5.00) made with coconut milk, jackfruit, sweet red water chestnuts, and tapioca jellies The Sushi & Massaman and Sushi & Pad Thai combos came from the lunch menu. They're served in bento boxes. As mentioned above, they served me shrimp in my massaman curry when I told them I was allergic. The server confirmed he understood yet the massaman curry still came with shrimp. The pieces of "sushi" above refer to nigiri. The Sushi & Massaman is supposed to come with 4 pieces, but mine only came with 3. The pieces were salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. The same 3 types were served with the Sushi & Pad Thai combo too. Wasabi came with the Sushi & Pad Thai combo, but not in the Sushi & Massaman combo. Both came with pickled ginger. Finally, the Sushi & Pad Thai combo came with a salad while the Sushi & Massaman combo came with white rice. After the issues were sorted out, I thought the bento boxes tasted fine. My fiancee liked them both. The only thing we didn't like was the salad that came with the Sushi & Pad Thai. It contained cucumber, carrots, orange, and imitation crab with some sort of light dressing. The combination tasted weird/strange. It wasn't very good. We took a few bites and left it. The quality of the California rolls and nigiri was satisfactory; not bad, not great. The best-tasting item was the pad Thai followed by the massaman curry, though the portion size of the curry was skimpy and the pieces of chicken were a bit tough and dry. One thing I liked about the curry was there was fresh, ripe, sliced avocado on top. I thought that was a nice and generous touch. The other items fared better. We got coconut chicken soup with our lunches and the soup was delicious. The Thai tea was tasty too (recommended). The special Thai iced dessert was the best thing we had. It was really good and is hard to find elsewhere in Atlanta (Thai Pad and Coco Sweets in Duluth used to sell this stuff, but they closed). I liken it to a dessert "soup" with crushed ice and yummy soft toppings. It's sweet, but not too sweet. Customer service was lacking. Our first server gave zero Fs. When can I go back?! I'm ready now to go, AGAIN. My sister-in-law is Thai and has told me about this place for years! She goes with the rest of her Thai friends, so I knew this would be a good place. TIP: If you go on Saturday, ask for the special Saturday menu for a few special goodies. We stayed safe since it was our first time here: Ping Moo appetizer: Yum! I was in Atlanta for a conference with my colleagues and we needed some Southeast Asian flavors instead of bland food provided by the hotel. Now, full transparency that the restaurant is own by my colleague's friend's sister in law. However, there's no bias here because she's not my friend . But I can tell you for sure that if you're looking for specifically SE Asian food here, they can be trusted because it is owned by SE Asians. I didn't try the sushi here. However, we ordered a TON of food. We got Thai iced coffee (AMAZING), crab ragoons, papaya salad, beef skewers for apps. Our entrees were ginger flounder (owner's rec), beef pad khee mao, chicken basil fried rice, beef pad see ew. Finally, we got a dessert courtesy of the owner because we came by recommendation, fried ice cream. Y'all, I felt like I was indulging in goodness from all the food. I LOVED the flounder, it's seriously so flavorful and fresh. The beef skewers and papaya salad were also so good with rice. The noodles and fried rice were also extremely flavorful. It was basically an explosion of spices and flavors. I highly recommend all of the above! Although if you don't like sweet and salty, then I wouldn't get the pad khee mao. I think the two noodles were pretty similar tbh. We liked this place so much we came back the second day for lunch again. We got the ginger flounder because it's amazing, pepper steak, and a special fried fish with curry sauce and three flavors sauce. Highly recommend all three dishes! I love coming here but this visit didn't meet the expectations of my other visits. We were greeted pretty quickly and sat at one of the high tables. Fast forwarding, the service lacked. We had to wave down the server a few times as she didn't come to our table. Another lady even stopped by and asked if we needed anything as she was leaving her tables, twice. Came here with my family while they were in town for the weekend. Good service! Everybody works as a team there, so many servers assisted with our table's orders and drinks. The food came out in a decent amount of time, even though they were a bit busy. The restaurant itself is small and quaint, but very cute. It's a great little spot to grab some sushi or Thai food. Very cute little business that seems to be family owned. I grabbed a Thai tea and the basil chicken and they were both perfect! The chicken was at that good level of spicy where it makes your nose run but your mouth doesn't feel like it's on fire. My friend ordered the fried cheesecake for dessert and it was delicious! It had that yummy tempura coating and it made the cheesecake nice and melty inside. They also have a large selection of sushi rolls if you're looking for a new sushi place. The coconut flavor was just right and the beef salad was delicious. If your going to get the Thai spicy make sure you spoon the salad onto the plain iceberg lettuce to temper the heat.
