It was my first time here so I asked the owner what would he considered to be his signature dish. When I ask this question almost every time they point out their most expensive dish. He did not disappoint me as he suggested the most expensive item on his menu but he was right as the skirt steak was the tenderest I have had. I was able to cut it with a fork and done to perfection. A big plus is they have three sauces mild, spicy and spicier they were all very good but if you can't take heat you better stick with the mild. I'm from California - we were here visiting family. We visited the day before the major snow storm. They were near our hotel and we were craving good Mexican food. Raises did not disappoint. We were greeted by a man with friendly smiling eyes. I'm guessing he was the owner. He gave us all a serving of soup, on the house! It was a vegetable cheese soup. We didn't finish it because we wanted to save room for our main meal. But he was so thoughtful to give us soup especially since it was so cold. I ordered one of the specialty soups. I can not recall the name. I believe it was the Caldo Tlalpeno. It was phenomenal. Not to salty, warm, wholesome and comforted my spirit. Chicken and a lot of vegetables made for a filling and delicious meal. My husband ordered the chilaquiles. Fantastic. We love our chilaquiles. The kids ordered steak fajitas (steak was very flavorful) and chicken fajitas. As our son just likes chicken, we requested only chicken in his fajitas. They gave him extra chicken at no cost. Wow. It was juicy, tender and perfectly cooked. This restaurant was exactly what we needed. Home cooking, friendly service, and very reasonable prices. It warms my heart to know there are still family run businesses that are open and serving communities, like Raizes. We travel to the area often and will always visit. However, in a city filled with authentic Mexican cuisine out the wazoo, my greasy potatoes and chips left something to be desired. I was also bummed that both the carrot juice and guacamole (both on the menu) were not available during our visit. The restaurant comfortably seats around 30-40 diners, offers fresh juice and a variety of Mexican classics like chiliquales, tacos and huevos rancheros. The decor was fun and colorful. I wasn't in the creative mood, so I settled for the guac & chips. Don't judge me. They were really good though! Our waiter brought everyone a complimentary salad, mine came with a house vinaigrette. The salad was pretty basic, but it was free, so it was basically good. At the end of our meal, our waiter brought a complimentary slice of Tres Leché cake for everyone. Even though I couldn't eat it, I thought that was awesome. Minutes later, the waiter came back with a plate of freshly sliced strawberries and told me "we don't discriminate against anyone here". I was sold. Soliz, we have a problem. For all of my Dulles-ites and Sugar Landians who are devout followers of Soliz Casa de Tacos, get ready to be upgraded. Raizes raises the stakes by offering incredible home-cooked items like chilaquiles, migas, and breakfast tacos stuffed so fat you might mistakenly call them gorditas. Raizes is family-owned and operated. This is made obvious by the gentleman running the register, while a young girl comes up to take your drink order, and a lovely woman walks around checking on tables. I admire families who work together; even more so, I respect families who can work together harmoniously and produce a quality product. Their fresh squeezed juices and coffee drinks are perfect for breakfast, and will have you shouting, "Buenos dias!" The man behind the register was quick to suggest the Chilaquiles with Arrachera (marinated skirt steak), so of course I obliged. My boyfriend ordered a chorizo, egg, potato taco, and a bacon, egg, potato taco. I also felt compelled to order a chorizo and bean taco after getting some serious order-envy (i.e. to envy someone else's order at a restaurant). The tacos were filled to the brim, and I appreciate that the chorizo isn't pre-mixed into the eggs like other places. I haven't been able to order a chorizo and bean taco since visiting Laredo in 2010. Their homemade red and green sauces are as delicious as they are cute in their little squirt bottles. The chilaquiles with arrachera... dios mio. I did not want to share, but did out of pure obligation to my spouse. The meat was so soft and tender that it cut like butter with the touch of my spoon. The tortillas were doused in a delicious, tangy green sauce. And what dish isn't made better with a drizzle of crema? The chilaquiles are so wonderful and homey that I wanted to give a big hug to the mama who put it together. The only thing I didn't like was the smoothie, made in an expensive blender using cheap mix. I was surprised that the smoothies are made with pre-made mix when they have fresh juice on hand... but this ain't no Smoothie King. I should have known better than to order a smoothie at a Mexican restaurant. Maybe I love Raizes because of their comforting Mexican home-cooking... Or maybe I was slighted one too many times by the popular kids in high school, and I never got invited to skip class for Soliz tacos...Well, I'm grown now, and grown taste buds deserve real Mexican food, which I am happy to say can be found at Raizes. read more

After church we were looking for a place to eat lunch so I did a quick search on the area and this place popped up with almost 90 reviews averaging 4.5 stars so we decided to check it out! Right off of Dulles Avenue, this family owned restaurant dishes up some pretty authentic Mexican food! Busy when we walked in, they had this young man playing classical guitar and singing his heart out! And he was pretty dang good! At one point he was playing Mediterranean Sundance by Paco DeLucia! Not an easy piece by any means, I was impressed with his energy and skill! He also covered Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours!" Now to the food.... Not bad.... Now the rice could have been better but the green chicken enchiladas I ordered were pretty good! Also in a previous review, a "cute salsa bottle" was mentioned and we got to try it and it was! Their salsa is made fresh on site; the "red" packs a little kick to it! Pretty decent! My wife's only complaint on her order was that they did not remove the shrimp tails before putting them in the tacos but otherwise she said the taste was ok! We got to meet Miguel one of the owners and he was very personable and shared a bit of his history with us and mentioned that his place has been open about 2 years! He was very nice and took our order initially and checked on us from time to time to make sure all was ok! Fantastic little mom and pop place. I knew I had made the right decision when I saw four policemen sitting inside having breakfast. They know ALL the good places on their beat. And I tried something I never had before - Chilaquiles with Arrechera - soft corn tortillas with cheese, green sauce and onions served with fried eggs, beans and very flavorful flank steak. This is my first visit. I had some extra time before work this morning and figured it would be a good time to stop by. It was after 830 a so school traffic was gone. The restaurant was nicely decorated. No offense smells, the tables were very neat, everything was clean. The cashier took my order and asked me to be seated since I was dining in. I should have gotten the cashier/waiters name. He seemed truly happy that I was there. He brought out my tacos and the salsas. I would have liked beans on my tacos. I will know to ask next time. They are open for breakfast and lunch, the food is very reasonably priced. The waiter brought me my check and told me if ever I was in a hurry to call in my order. Even if it was just 1 taco, he said I could call and he would have it ready. He's so sweet. I was stuffed after the chorizo taco, but I bought the bacon one too. I keep my commitments. :-) I'm looking forward to trying the rest of the menu. My bill was 4.80 I went to the counter to pay but the cashier was doing something.
