This is my favorite Japanese restaurant. I have enjoyed my dish every time I have been here. My favorite is the teriyaki chicken. The sauce on it is amazing and you get a very big amount of moist chicken with this meal. The fried rice dishes are tasty but don't feel like a very extravagant meal. You can have fried rice anywhere so I recommend trying something different. I don't like sushi so I can't comment about that. The desserts are very different and interesting but good. They are worth a try at least once. Tempura green tea ice cream is one dessert I enjoyed. The service has been pretty good each time I have been there. This is a good place to go to for fresh and authentic Japanese food. They have been releasing many groupon and livingsocial deals also. It can be a little expensive without a deal/coupon so that is the only downside but you are paying for the quality of the food which is really good. They also offer a happy hour during the week. The atmosphere is calm and pleasant. The location is on 50th & France making it a nice upscale area. There a parking garage very close so that makes parking simple and also free! read more

Best sushi I've had so far. Did not even notice Raku before this groupon deal. Went to Raku with a friend on last Sat night. The place was very busy, we had to wait at the bar for a while before we were seated down. Our waiter was very attentitive, we just went along with whatever he recommended. It turned out to be a great meal. We loved the fresh oyster, the Aji and the triplet salmon roll. Everything was so fresh n tasty. We really love this place. read more

Ramen noodle bowl lacks flavor and imagination, worst Japanese restaurant I've been to. This restaurant caters to people with no pallets.

Barely any crab in California roll, salmon was just ok in the philly roll.. Good prices for lunch but not that exciting.

Not a bad Japanese restaurant for the price . The ambiance is not particularly Japanese but pleasantly upscale and the sound level actually allows talking. I'm not a sushi fan but the tempura was good. My husband had a crab and avocado salad that he liked but I thought it was bland. I recently had a terrible experience with Raku's refusal to honor their groupon as stated. Don't be caught like I was! The groupon already has LOTS of limitations - it can't be used for lunch, or on holidays, you can only use one per table, and one per person, can't be used for split checks, not for happy hour, not for take out, not with on line reservations, not combined with other offers, promotion or specials, and can't be used for the "Raku sushi entrée." So I was really careful to make a reservation by phone for a group of 8, where I would be paying for all entrees and using one groupon coupon for one non-sushi meal. So I thought I had it covered. But NO! They wouldn't honor it because one of the 8 diners ordered a Raku sushi entrée. Does it say that you can't use the coupon on a non-sushi meal if some other person at the table orders sushi? No. But they wouldn't let me use it. I think this is an effort to draw people in with a coupon that they are not planning to honor. I recommend avoiding the groupon and never dining at such a place. read more

This is our family's favorite take out Japanese restaurant, we usually order through BiteSquad. The fish is always very fresh and they have some creative, delicious rolls. We love their rice less roll called Megu Sashimi Roll, it's the best! Manhattan role is also pretty good, as well as, their salmon teriyaki and thinly sliced beef teriyaki. Speaking of Manhattan, we absolutely have a few favorite places in Chicago and the East/West coast, but the Raku comes close to some and it's right here in Minneapolis. Give them a try! We prefer Raku over Wakami in St. Louis Park, although it's also a good sushi restaurant. read more

I ordered sesame shrimp. It is battered and deep fried over veggies with a sauce and sesame seeds. It was good until I got a mouthful of crunchy, inedible shrimp tails! A customer can't know that there are tails on the shrimp, and it is a terrible experience to crunch on them. For a deep fried dish they should remove the tails. They re- did the diah and the shrimp were then fine, but the veggies were cold. All in all, not worth the price. read more

I would not say Raku has the best sushi I've had so far, but it definitely is in the top notch. Of course everyone's taste varies, raku is on my top list. I love fish, so sushi and sashimi is my first choice in Raku. To my surprise, Raku has oh toro and kanpachi, so I ordered those two sashimi style. They are very fresh and tasty, very good quality fish. Our waitress was very sweet. She recommend us the lost tuna, which according to her description is the number one seller in Raku. I tried it and loved it. It was mixed greens wrapped with seared pepper tuna, the sauce is kind of like a citrus sauce, very refreshing. My partner is not a sushi eater, so she ordered a udon noodle soup. It was a huge bowl of noodle soup, different from what I had in other Japanese restaurants. I would say it's not very Japanese style according to my knowledge of Japanese Udon bowls. However, it tasted good and my partner obviously liked it. The last thing that is impressive is the sake flights. We were told that if we order two sake flights, we will get a super flight with a cup of bonus. It IS the best way to sample so many different kinds of sakes (we had 7 kinds!), our sweet waitress was kind enough to tell us the difference for all those sakes. read more

We arrived for our 6:30 reservation last night to this fairly small restaurant. Water arrived promptly. By 6:50pm we had only garnered a rushed "I'll be there in a sec" glance from our waitress. At 6:52pm, we left the restaurant, reasoning if it took over 22 minutes for a drink order to be taken, what kind of wait would be in store to get food?! Luckily, Bario was able to seat us without a reservation and we had our first drink and appetizer all within 20 minutes. read more

The only way to sum up the experience I had at Raku is too relate my first sushi experience as a child. When I was 9yrs old my father had taken me to a sushi bar in California and upon entering the bar I was amazed at how much it reminded me of a movie stage set. We were greeted with so much graciousness. T he host and chefs seemed like they knew my father for years and we were family. At Raku the decor was so modern like New York yet brought me back to my days traveling through the Orient. The presentation of the fish was exquisite and the server while a bit of a language barrier was so passionite and concerned for our happiness. Again I felt like this was a brand new experience even though I have dined at every sushi bar in Minnesota. I have read all of the reviews for Raku and I must admit that at BEST the bad reviews were just plain snobby. I personally introduced myself to all the chefs and they were very PROUD of how FRESH the fish was. If Raku served old fish that smelled does one not think that Urbanspoon would be lined with bad reviews. This is not the case. I have spoken to employees of "fish guys' and Coastal and they all agreed that Rakus fish is nothing short of fantastic. Credit card machines going down. It happens at EVERY restaurant. Language barriers. The servers at Raku are kind, sweet and do know the food they are serving. They may not have worked at a typical "American" restaurant before especially the dynamic that is Edina so cut them some slack. They are well dressed, attractive and sincere. Maybe the diners at Raku that are having issues with the service should understand that great Sushi and excelled entree's from the kitchen take time and are not to be rushed. This bar is only 4 months old. Every bar needs tweaking. The owners that I have spoken to are so very nice and are making great strides to improve what needs to be improved. Last but not least, I overheard one new customer state he has eaten all over Japan and China and everywhere in-between and Rakus sushi was extremely good. The food was only so-so. Tasted about the same as packaged sushi from a grocery store. The 'seafood soup' was mostly mushrooms and celery. There were pieces of broken crab shell hidden in there and I cracked my tooth on one. Some of the sashimi was chewy, as if the fish was old or was a poor slice. The rice didn't stick together at all so chopsticks were useless. The ginger was not fresh, seemed to be from a jar. The service was horrible. We were seated and then waited for at least half an hour before being asked if we wanted beverages. It was at least another half an hour before we got them. The waitress spilled my soup in my lap and didn't offer any towels or napkins to clean up my pants or the table. I had to take linens from another table to clean up the mess. The food was very slow arriving. We were a party of seven and were not asked if we wanted to pay separately so we had to wait for them to split the bill. Waitstaff seemed confused about which menus should be brought. I had to ask specifically if there was a happy hour and then whether I could please have the correct menu. Other reviewers have mentioned service issues,and unfortunately I must agree, because after telling me they would check back to see if I wanted to order any additional happy hour items before it ended, they did not do so. There were only two or three other customers in the restaurant, so I don't know why they never got back to me. I also must agree with other reviewers about chipped or stained plates, and my shoyu bowl had something dark and sticky on it. Rather off-putting to sit down to. Tempura was nice, but sushi was average and the tiny shumai were overly wet and served in a puddle of water. Alas, I will not return unless I hear new and reassuring reports.
