We love the atmosphere, the service, the portion size and the price. My parents, sister and I always share our food. So we love their combo special and get the same thing all the time. Parents share the shoyu ramen paired with fish katsu and shrimp fried rice while my sister and I get tonkatsu. The combo special is only $12.95. We brought my nephew and his girlfriend who ordered a full bowl the first time. But they quickly learned it was best to order the combo and share then order a second snack sized ramen bowl and sides. Good portion sizes, great prices, and good service. My favorite broth is the Tan Tan Ramen. It has char siu, fish cake, green onions, bamboo shoots and green onions. The broth is cooked for over 12 hours with pork bones, chicken bones and sesame. Location: It's located in the Kapolei Village center near Foodland. It's in between Dominos and L & L. Parking: I honestly dread coming to this parking lot. The parking stalls are so close together. Try to come when it first opens or during happy hour 2:30 pm- 5:00 pm. You get free gyoza with entree purchase, plus parking should be better. Other Stuff: Ramen Bones was originally Daiichi Ramen and they practically offer the same taste and portions just a different name. You can see the old sign posted on top of the doorway. Lately, it's been about where to find the most Inexpensive and delicious simple recipes done right! This is one of our favorite places to go for ramen because quite simply - good portions, reasonable prices, kid friendly, fast service, and the food is great! We came here after 2pm...and guess what? They had a gyoza special. We ordered 4 ramen bowls and 3 of them included the gyoza for free. I ordered the combo with kaarage. The kids ate it up except for one. He didn't like the bean sprouts. I was visiting the Kapolei area recently and decided to visit a Restaurant called Ramen Bones Within the Foodland parking lot. The time was around 6;15pm and the place inside was visibly empty for dinner time. I think that there was 2 other tables with couples. I looked over the extensive menu of many selections and decided to order a local favorite ramen called Chicken Katsu curry ramen. I also decided to order a dish of 4 pieces of gyoza. For drinks they had refrigerated canned Pepsi products, & juice but I really wanted a Coke to no available. The ramen came out after a short wait. The gyoza followed a short time later. My review of the ramen. The curry broth was perfect & not salty, that was a plus. The chicken Katsu in the broth was Crispy, moist and a decent portion. Also in the broth was wakame (seaweed). Which was not tender At all. They would have been better off leaving this out or providing another vegetable like Choi Sum for example. Where the most frustrating part was the ramen noodles. They always stayed clumped together even as I tried to pull them apart with my chopsticks. I wanted to eat a smaller portion of noodles and not always shove a big clump of them In my mouth. I am curious if other diners have this problem when Eating the ramen. I eat ramen often so this was really noticeable. My take on why the noodles are Always clumped together is that They boil them or cook to fast. I was really disappointed and wanted this to be a great curry ramen. There was nothing special About the Gyoza they were okay. Also the curry broth had no visible Pieces of carrots or onion etc like other ramen shops. If you are familiar with Daiichi Ramen, then you know what to expect from Ramen Bones. In fact, they still have the Daiichi decals in their kitchen windows and above the entrance. Is the ramen spectacular here? For me personally, it's nothing special. A stand out ramen has good noodles with a flavorful broth and my ramen broth left a little to be desired. Just your average ramen place. This place was okay nothing stood out for me regarding service or flavors. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen. The pork was dry and broth was okay. Oxtail ramen: The noodles were the perfect texture. the aroma of the soup drew me in immediately. A good mix of meat and fat on the oxtail bone. I think certain thing like the noodles will be cooked differently and will taste better. The noodles to go didn't cook through when we poured the hot broth in the dry ingredients. The oxtail, I was not a fan. It taste as if it was boiled, just the oxtail and water nothing else. No salt or seasoning. So adding the broth it did not enhance the meal at all. I don't usually feel the need to say negative things on Yelp because it's lead me to the right places (for food specifically) so, so, so many times. This time I felt like I needed to be honest about my experience because maybe it will help someone else. I don't get the 4-star average rating, people saying this is authentic, that it's the best on the island. I am just confused. Did we go on an off day? Was the main cook sick? Did it change ownership? We went during dinner. It was not late. It was about 3/4 full of people. Not overwhelmingly busy. Seemed like the folks working were on it. And yet... I did NOT like the ramen here at all. We ordered spicy tonkatsu ramen and mapo tofu ramen. I have had many good ramen bowls, both these styles and more and love noodles. I'm not usually that picky about noodles either. I like high end places as well as fast food and also the freeze dried packaged kind. But... This ramen experience was well below my expectations. The noodles in both bowls were soggy. The tonkatsu broth was bad. It tasted like chemicals. I couldn't put my finger on why... The mapo tofu ramen looked horrible when it arrived. I just saw a bowl of goo. I moved the noodles around with a spoon and thought to myself, "maybe it's just a different style... It'll be good!" and took a taste. It was not tasty. Noodles were overcooked. Too much starch was left in the water so it became a thick gooey mess. The flavor wasn't good either. I don't usually leave food. But, as I told the folks working there, I didn't like it. If I have leftovers I always bring them home as I don't like wasting food, but I just couldn't manage to eat this. I had around 5 bites and left the rest. We had mochiko chicken side which was fine. Nothing special. Homemade is better but that's to be expected. The two stars are because the beef curry rice side order was good. It had carrots and potatoes. It was well done. Rice was perfect. Spice was good. It reminded me of home. The overall place is just a typical shop in a strip mall. Kinda dingy. Tables are only wiped down. I found food on my chair when I sat down. More Chinese style ramen. The broth is good for sure but has more Chinese flavor to it vs Japanese I would def come here for the Tan Tan Ramen because that IS essentially a ramen dish with Chinese origin. Originally it was invented in Sichuan Province around 1841 and then spread in Chengdu. It is well known that it was named "Tantanmen" literally meaning "noodles being carried" because it was sold by being carried in a shouldering pole. The noodles here are more egg based noodles. The best ramen on island are all in town, Honolulu. I'd say Ramen Bones/Daiichi Ramen is actually pretty good for ramen in Kapolei and other suburban parts of the island. This spot is definitely much better than Ramen-Ya, Nagoya, or IchiBen which all serve bland, watered-down broths. Ramen Bones' broth (at least, the black garlic broth) is flavorful with chewy thin ramen noodles that I enjoy. Unlike the three other ramen spots mentioned, Ramen Bones offers both black garlic and tantan broths. These four restaurants seem to cater to local tastes with the "combo" offerings of a mini ramen bowl with fried rice and gyoza or a meat entree. I was surprisingly pleased with the Daiichi Ramen in Aiea, and I'm pleased with this location as well. Plus, it's conveniently located next to Foodland and neighborhoods! read more
