A++++ mexican breakfast. Old town hero. Do not hesitate! Like going back in time 50 years.

Recently went to Ranch House Cafe and was extremely disappointed that the owner and waitress were not wearing masks to protect customers. We ordered pancakes and a breakfast burrito. The burrito was overloaded with so much onions it was disgusting. The pancakes were fluffy and good. We sat outside to eat but the tables need to be covered with tablecloths as they are very old and need to be refinish. Very disappointed at the lack of care for their customers as I witnessed that neither the owner nor the waitress wore face masks when serving the public or taking orders. Not going to eat at this place again as much as I want to support local businesses safety is priority and this restaurant doesn't take safety seriously :-/ read more

From the menu, I was hoping for some decent Tex-Mexish breakfast. Nah. The Chorizo in the chorizo scramble special was tasteless, missing that vibrant vinegar/chile taste of a good chorizo con huevos. They also put cheese on it and didn't offer salsa - CRIMINAL! They also had biscuits and gravy and chicken-fried steak on the menu that reminded me of home. (Texas). The egg sandwich was kinda blah, as was the omelette. I have to say that they make some mighty fine hash browns though. Pretty much the best I've tasted. I will try them again, but fear they have been lost in Gringolandia. : ) Loved the murals. A group of us went for breakfast and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. I had the Huevos Rancheros which were good. Prices were reasonable. The restaurant could use some updating. The interior and the furnishings look like they have been unchanged for years. Service was efficient even for our larger group. The person who claimed this food was the best was exactly wrong. I ordered biscuits and gravy with sausage and eggs and OJ. One would easily assume that this would be the one dish a restaurant named 'Ranch House' could hardly get wrong. Call me corrected. The OJ was obviously from concentrate, easy to look past, what proved impossible to ignore was the fact that the biscuits themselves were store bought. I mean the ones that you 'pop' out of the can. For this horrendous opportunity I was allowed to pay a whopping $22 and change. Unless you were fed this food through a bottle at birth and know no better, heed my warning, STAY AWAY!!! read more

My wife and I went to breakfast the other day and it was great. I went with the usual corned beef hash and as usual, had to being home the leftovers! Poached eggs were nice n runny. My wife had the biscuits n gravy with sausage and they're delicious. I can't believe she let our pooch eat the last bite of sausage. I was eyeballing it. Outside tables are covered. The condiment bottles were really clean. No residual catsup on the lid or the like. Waitress was wearing masks as required and she was attentive. This old cafe is thread bare & worn, but obviously a favorite hangout for local seniors. Breakfast was fine. The service was friendly, although our waitperson had too much of a very strong perfume on that detracted from enjoying the aroma of our food. read more

My husband and I decided to give it a try and have breakfast here for the first time, after years of seeing the exterior of this old ranch style building. We were pleasantly surprised about the interior and the seating layout. Very comfortable and felt homey. Our server Consuelo was very cheerful and ready to please with a beautiful smile. Also went here for our group's post run breakfast . After eight hilly miles on the water company's hilly trails above Moraga Creek. Good for large groups. We had about 14 runners. Hungry and thirsty and sweating. We were put in separate room just off the entrance. After a little wait we were given water and order our meals. Fried eggs sandwich with bacon. Biscuits with gravy. Unscrambled eggs and dry toast. All meals were quite good, accompanied with condiments including Costco sized bottle of Tabasco and Safeway syrup for the large pancake stack. Coffee coffee coffee in nice ceramic mugs. Staff was friendly and efficient. Will give it 3 and a half stars as well. read more

My meal here was interesting. Honestly 3 stars for entertainment value. Everyone eating here except my self was a regular. CNN is on in the background. Definitely the breakfast spot for old retired guys. I ordered a side salad with ranch and a spinach, mushroom and cheese omelette with sourdough toast. When my meal came I got : Side salad with ranch. It had tomatoes, red onions and Sliced PICKLES. I got a chuckle out of it. Never had pickles on a salad before. It was kinda tasty to be honest. My omelette came out next. I ordered spinach, mushroom and Swiss with sourdough toast. I got: bacon, cheddar, tomato and onion omelette with English muffin. I'm not a picky person I actually love bacon. I wasn't in the mood for it but it came and smelled good so I ate it. I found it amusing. Totally bizarre breakfast order just cracked me up. I ate my weird omelette and English muffin and giggled to myself. It made my breakfast quite enjoyable. My first experience here 10+ years ago wasn't the greatest and I honestly can't remember why now. But about 2 years ago I came here for breakfast with my fiancé and it was very good. New interior and some other changes have reinvigorated The Ranch, a traditional American food diner located near Safeway in Moraga, CA. It is housed in a traditional California ranch house. There appear to be demonstration scale buildings out behind the restaurant. The food has improved. Tonight, my wife had chicken fajitas, and I had the hangar steak. What motivated me to write this review was the new attention to detail and the excellent preparation of some side items. For example, the beans with the fajitas were outstanding. I could have had just them - excellent seasoning and delicate preparation. Purano beans. Nice touches with the meals. Happy diners. I recommend it. read more

This place defines character. Old fashioned diner; good service. Old fashioned good/not great/not trying to be great, highly caloric food. The crab on Friday is real and excellent (the crab benedict is particularly decadent.) Ramshackle weathered building. It's hard to believe this is in self conscious Moraga; it's a gem. It is an oasis of un-pretentiousness in Lamorinda (the anti-Orinda/Lafayette/Walnut Creek chi-chi atmosphere.) I hope it doesn't get remodeled, or try to upscale it's menu. 've only been for breakfast, but this old school cafe does it right! Yes, Moraga is a small sleepy town - and I wouldn't come to Moraga just for Ranch House Cafe. But if you find yourself in the area, want brunch, and don't want to deal with the pretentious-ness you may find in Walnut Creek or Lafayette, head over here. The eggs benedict were great - lots and lots of hollandaise sauce. I find many places skimp on the hollandaise, and here your eggs and muffin are swimming in it! Also, you get two eggs and a big brick of hashed browns for the same price of one egg at Chow (in Lafayette). My fiance loooooves the omelets, filled to the brim with lots of meat. Yum. Mind you, it is very homey, and many of the residents of Moraga are either elderly or have small children. You won't find the St. Mary's crowd hanging out here. But I live across the street - so I don't mind =) read more

Went here after a night of shisha and Svedka and Lemonade and the Corn Beef Hash and Eggs were okay. It was hearty, but not great. I wanted to really like this place but the hostess was just horrible. She acted like everything was an annoyance. The gentleman was accommodating, nice and welcoming. The server was quick and efficient, but we did not see much of her. The hostess was the one who interacted with us the most. Dropped menus on the table, did not say a word to us. We asked for refills and got eye rolling. (Just an aside here, IT IS YOUR JOB DONT ROLL YOUR EYES WHE I AM ASKING YOU TO DO THE JOB YOU ARE BEING PAID TO DO) She also dropped off the meals and got the food wrong, so we got to switch the plates around. She picked up our glasses with her fingers IN the glasses. (Highly unsanitary). Food was good but the service knocked the whole thing down. There are really better places. The actual place is old inside but that is fine if the food and service were great, but the place is just OK. Service slow, coffee poor, and food just average. I just had bacon/eggs/hash-browns. Hash-browns seem the frozen ones. Kids did not like pancakes seemed to have an after taste. Syrup not warmed up. Wonderfully positioned as a local greasy spoon in the hey day of feathered hair and Camaros, one look at the hostess and you immediately think "hey, don't I recognize you from behind the counter of the bowling alley, from when I was 12?! You haven't changed a bit! Feathered hair is the new black!" when entering. So, what's not to like? Everything after that first paragraph, that's what. Tough tough tough, dry, dry, dry meats, food overcooked, yet amazingly COLD when the kitchen can't be more than 50 feet away. There's not much for food in Moraga but given that it was my lunch hour and I was pretty hungry, I decided to give this place a shot. BIG MISTAKE. I went for their non breakfast offerings and tried their fish and chips. All I can say is I had their food yesterday 06/03 and right now, 06/04, I am throwing up non stop and have a horrible case of the runs. Food poisoning for sure. I will NEVER return. Love this place so far. Its really casual -- very small town feeling. I love diners like this where it feels like a town comes together. We just moved here and are going there almost every weekend for brunch. Casual enough that we can bring the kids-- 6 and 1 and if they act up, I don't feel weird. The atmosphere was interesting. I was hopeful when I walked in. I was seated right away and on Sunday that's not always possible in a lot of places. Once seated I observed a bus boy that should have been the owner. He worked very hard. He went above and beyond to be helpful and did not rest for a second cleaning, serving, interacting positively with the customers. I can't say the same for the owner who took our order. I thought based on his service I did something that caused him to ignore us. Still I was hopeful this was going to be a wonderful experience. The waiter/owner brought coffee right away but we had to wait about 15 minutes to place the order. We finally ordered. House special. Once I ordered I asked for basted eggs. I was told they take too long. So in the interest of doing what the restaurant wanted, rather than what I wanted, I switched to eggs over easy. The meal arrived quickly. The wait was not worth the food. IHOP uses higher quality ingredients. The pancakes tasted as if they were made from a cheap restaurant supply mix using water instead of milk. The sausages were definitely from a package, cheap. The eggs were ok. The whole meal was very basic the plate did not even have a garnish. Well then I had to ask for something else. Heavens to Betsy I wanted a check. I asked the guy 3 times. I made hand motions too. You know the international sign for check. One hand up and open with the other hand pointing to the bottom, like total it up please. I even asked the hardworking bus boy and he said he would get the big guy. Well 20 minutes passed. If basted eggs take too long, getting the check took an eternity. This COULD have been a great Sunday meal experience, it was soiled by poor service and poor quality food. $33.00 for two coffees and 2 very basic breakfasts that were no better the bus terminal food. By the way my girlfriend used the restroom. She said it was filthy. There are plenty of other spots to choose from. Go to those instead. read more

This is a great little casual place for breakfast and lunch! My husband I come here often and the food is always consistently good and generously portioned. I love the crab omelette with avocado and the crispy hash browns and my husband loves the farmers omelette and the Mexican scramble. On nice days we sit outside at the picnic tables. Well, this is literally the only option in Moraga to grab breakfast, other than at Nation's, but the sinkhole construction dings that idea. So, I have resigned myself to being a regular (twice a week) as I have too many morning meetings and everyone knows it is hell to get out of here during the school year. I am forever ordering their corn beef hash and eggs for a meal, and it is quite good, but really bad for you if you have bad HDL. Coffee is not one of their speciality, just for information purposes, as it is as institutional as it comes. Service is quick, perhaps a bit too quick at time, as one feels someone rushed, despite the lack of any real crowds other than when school is out for whatever reasons they let us kids out of schools these days. There are a couple of coffee alternatives, but they are not places where you can discuss business easily. I will continue to hold my meetings there, but hope that there is some competition in Moraga that can provide the residents with an eatery alternatives. No easy task in this town, that's for sure. read more

I've been here a few times in the past half year--once with the family on weekends and sometimes by myself on a quiet weekday. All I expect from little local diners is good, home-cooked style food--nothing fancy, nothing innovative. But consistently, the food here falls short of that by miles; I'd say it borderlines bad. On my last visit, the omelet was dry and ugly brown (not sure how eggs can come out brown without being burnt but they figured it out); the linguisa (like crumbled cardboard) had no flavor and a strange texture. The fruit side was five pieces of sliced orange--granted, the oranges were sliced very well and while technically correct, this hardly is my expectation of "fruit". The service is marginal. I'm always greeted quickly and when there are empty tables, seated just as quickly but they treat people like a grumpy aunt might treat unwelcome nephews and nieces--a bit snarky at the world (not the customers), and often yelling weird social commentaries at the numerous TV... nothing socially offensive though--just miscellaneous ramblings... just like a grumpy aunt might. Prices are reasonable for good food which means this place is waaaay overpriced. If I was a chicken and I laid an egg... I'd be pretty sad to have these people ruin it. There are many wonderful breakfast choices in the neighboring Orinda & Lafayette area so I'm not coming back to the Ranch House. read more
