This "sniffs in" at up to 3.5 stars... It is not the sexiest around this area, but it is reliable. They have water drainage issues, so they tend to be greener than others at this price point. The con is you have to watch your step at times and watch where you drive/park your golf cart. The restaurant has been upgraded in recent years and the food smells good. The course looked pretty good and green with the recent rains. We played with a very nice couple from LA which made for a good afternoon. Some seal pups behind us were hitting into us, but they adjusted once spoken to by someone in our group. "Safety first" kids...there was nowhere to go as the group in front of us was not breaking any land speed records. I think the ambassador eventually got on them, so it picked up. They preach hard on their cart literature and their scorecards about being a "pace setter". It is one of the cons of golfing in the "tech age" where impatient motherferitis is at an all-time high. Almost nobody has any patience anymore and most people are time thieves. Nobody has an attention span. Nobody reads and nobody listens. It is a little excessive with their ready play obsession but at least their marshall's/ambassador's do not climb your back unless you are truly a snail and slowing everyone down. The FAIRWAYS and ROUGHS are in pretty good shape right now. The GREENS are in very good shape right now, but the pin placement should be deemed illegal in 49 states. It is always horrible here. These greens are nearly all tough to begin with because they are fast as hell and then they place the pin where you would have to "die it in" or "riverboat gamble" and try to power it in. I am an above average putter, and I find it very hard to adjust here. There is no getting used it. It's like you have to be borderline perfect or else. It is sadistic. For some reason the front tees are now the WHITE tees. Odd since white almost always middle tees. There are lots of wildlife on the course. Saw a few squirrels, egret, wigeon ducks, mallards, Canadian geese, Egyptian geese and their babies, ruddy ducks, coots and a pelican diving for fish. This is a review for the management, not the course. Specifically, GM, Ahmad, who personally took the time to help me with a Player's Club account issue today. I bumped into him in the parking lot as I was heading into the shop, explained my issue, and he immediately said follow me, we can take care of this right now. And then he did. Regarding the course, I have played it many times and while conditions don't match other public courses like Costa Mesa, it's a fun layout and a good time if you can get a good deal on a tee time. Certainly not deserving of a sub 3-star average rating in my book. read more

When we arrived, we stood waiting to be seated for several minutes while staff walked by without acknowledging us. After about five minutes, we ended up seating ourselves. Then a staff member approached us and rather rudely told us not to sit inside, even though we weren't planning to sit inside in the first place. The service only got worse from there. We waited an unusually long time before anyone came to take our order. I ordered tea, but it didn't arrive until I had already finished my meal. To make matters worse, it was cold after server took her sweet time. The food quality was disappointing as well. The beans were extremely dry and tasted like they had been reheated in a microwave. The food was cold as well. Between the poor service, long wait times, cold drinks, and subpar food, this was one of the worst dining experiences we've had. read more

I started playing golf a year ago and I have to say that Rancho San Joaquin is one of the more reasonable choices for golf in the area. I'll caveat this by saying that Orange County is known to have very overpriced golf and this is no exception. However, I think that the course conditions are decent enough to play golf, the distances are long enough for some challenges, and the food at the restaurant are actually pretty good! I gave it three stars because I still think it's overpriced for what you get, and there is goose poop eeeeverywhere. The dishes I've tried at the restaurant are pretty delicious though! Don't sleep on the tuna melt, fries or the salad wraps! Service is really nice too so don't forget to chat with the servers there! What I love about eating there is that even if you don't golf you can watch your friends tee off on hole 10! read more

I've been playing golf for about 4 years now and I can honestly say that there has been a lot of great work that has been done to RSJ and my most recent round a few weeks ago really showed how great it has become. It can be slow at times and it may be a tad expensive for what we get as a golf course but overall it's a great course with nice people and a great clubhouse area with some good food. They also have a great range deal considering it is in Irvine. read more

Our group is been playing this course for years. There has been a tremendous Improvement in the last couple of years from t-boxes, fairways, sand traps to the greens. We have seen the management's hard work to keep the course in a great condition which makes our tournament more pleasant. The staff at pro shop (Justin), starters, and restaurant are very friendly and treat the players like family. Highly recommend this course. The food is amazing too. Facility is very clean. read more

Pretty sure they changed ownership a year or so ago. The conditions are so much better now, though still not worth $100 a round. This has been my go-to for twilight. On summer weekends you can usually get through 11 or 12 holes if you Tee off at 6 ish. Still lots of goose shit though. Careful don't make them fly onto your face when you swing lol. read more

I used to love coming to this place but now it's just so packed and so expensive it is not even worth it anymore. The range membership used to be $40 a month but now it's ridiculous. Green fees were actually decent back then but now it's crazy. Not worth it for how they barely take care of it as well. read more

The greens are still very undulating for a regular golfer, however the fairways are much more playable than the past. The staff are all very friendly. I've been playing here on & off for years. Over the last couple of years, the course has made significant improvements to the course; improved the greens, repaired bare spots in the fairways & improved overall playing conditions. They have also improved the clubhouse & patio for outside (covered) dining. Additionally, they have a good menu & the food is outstanding. Lastly, all of the staff are friendly & courteous, particularly the morning the starters, Justin & Ken along with Bobby in the bar. I've been playing this course, off and on, for over 30 years. Several years ago, when it was under former ownership, I left a far less than flattering review. However, the new ownership has made tremendous improvements. They've added drainage, repaired bare areas throughout, and totally renovated the restaurant, bar, and patio. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Two of those are Justin in the pro shop and Bobby in the bar. They are great ambassadors. There are still some improvements to be made, such as opening all the fairways to carts, and maybe redoing a couple of the greens that have sunk over the years (10, 9, and 16), because these are only missing a clown's mouth or a windmill. All in all, for the price, this is a fair deal. If the price were to increase much, that would not be the case. read more

Rancho San Joaquin is where I learned how to play golf and has always had my heart. I would play here once a week, but stopped due to rounds taking long time and not the best maintenance for the money and stopped playing there for a few years. But I recently have started playing there again every week and have loved it the changes to some of the holes that caused a lot of the back up which immensely picked up pace of play . As well as changing one of the greens on the back that cause tricky 3 puts if you don't leave the ball where you need to on the approach. In terms of conditions it has been improved as well, I was very surprised. the staff is super friendly read more

I have played this course regularly and have watched the improvement there over the last couple of years. The new ownership coupled with the new management has been awesome. The course itself is much improved and gets better every time I play there. The staff is always friendly and informed starting with Justin in the Pro Shop and Ahmed the GM. The restaurant has become a favorite of my wife and I. We eat there a couple of times a week and have recommended it to our friends that don't golf. The food is excellent and the service of the staff is great. This is not your usual fare at a golf course. We love it! read more

Very organized check in. Pace of play was excellent. Coarse was in the best shape and getting better all the time.

I had an enjoyable experience at their driving range. The evening I went, was very busy, but I was still able to find a place. Even with the heavy rains for four days prior, they were still open, as the driving range is not real grass. The balls were decent, and the price was fair. The readings on the sign were accurate compared to my rangefinder, and everybody there seemed pretty nice. A few of the spots had Ball tracer technology, but I wasn't able to try that. Paid $20 for a large bucket. Google says this plays opens at 10am, but in actuality, the machines dont open until 10am. What happens before 10am is pure darwinism. You have to get here to reserve your mat or else youll see a see of mats occupied by reserved bags and you'll automatically wait until the person you're waiting for finishes. Theres no formal process to reserve. You will see people place their bags next to a mat. You may see them disappear and/or be taking practice swings until the machine opens at 10am. So the only thing you can do at that point is stand behind someone until they finish and hope that person doesnt get a second bucket. If they do, thats hoarding. You can say something at that point, but they may not understand you and its pointless. You'll just have to wait, and wait, and wait. If this place wants to milk it, they should charge extra for the people who get sloppy seconds or for the people who get here early. On a positive note, there is no waiting for taking chip shots or putting practice. And this place used to be dusty and full of dirt but since then, they added grass and new mats. So it could be worse. Waiting while dust gets blown in your face. But seriously, save your time and just go somewhere else unless you really like waiting or listening to cheesy 80's music while you do so. They need to build a double decker. This place can afford it. I'd pay more if this place could accomodate everyone. But until its 2035, that wont happen until they do. read more

TERRIBLE. They made us pay once online and then again in person, totaling 200 dollars. When we went, the greens were in even worse condition than somone who just got hit by a semi truck. they dumped hundreds of pounds of sand on to them after aerating them. we cannot even get our money back or a free 9, considering we only paid 9 in the first place. any other golf course in Irvine is better no questions asked read more

This is a nice golf course in the area. Some of the holes get a little backed up but it's not too bad and we got through in about 4.5 hours. I heard some rumors that the golf course was purchased by a Korean actor which would explain the kimbap available at the turn and the kimchi fried rice on the menu. We had lunch at the restaurant afterwards and the cheeseburger, onion rings, Philly cheese steak were all decent. I knocked off one star because maybe I'm just sensitive but there was an odd smelly odor on the greens. Maybe it's a chemical. It kind of smelled like a mix of vinegar and rotten egg...yuck. on the practice putting green, my golf balls had a bluish liquid on them so maybe that was it. I haven't experienced this anywhere else so I found it a little off-putting. Some of the holes had a lot of geese and ducks so that was kind of nice although you end up with a lot of geese droppings too... read more

It's a Saturday you're looking to play 18 with some buddies. This place is not it. $99 for what? 3 hours and 25 minutes for 9 holes. I hit multiple balls in the fairway and never rewarded. I was either hitting off of dirt or a mud grass lie. New owners did nothing. If you ACTUALLY like golf and know how to play never go here. This is the covid golfer heaven and real golfer hell. The golf course has been improved by the new owners over the past couple of years. All new sand in the bunkers, nice greens, and the fairways are much improved. The pace of play is pretty good now. The driving range has been upgraded to synthetic turf so it keeps the range balls in better condition and the range doesn't need to shut down if it rains. New LED lights on the range make it easier to see the ball flight at night. And now there are 20 Trackman stalls that are fun to track the ball (especially at night) and you can also simulate a round at Pebble Beach etc. The driving range has a Players Club deal that is only $80/mo for a large basket every day, and some other perks like discounts on green fees, and reduced fees for Trackman and the short game practice area. The restaurants at the golf course and driving range have both been completely remodeled with all new food & drink choices. Give the Kimbap a try when you finish the front 9. read more
