I deducted two points because someone who appeared to be the supervisor or manager was loudly belittling three Hispanic employees right in the front and repeating himself over and over as if they were stupid. We stopped in after a movie tonight and thoroughly enjoyed a NYC-style calzone. My husband and I split one, but it was so delicious, I wished I had it all to myself! It came stuffed with sausage, pepperoni, ricotta and mozzarella. A delicious, warm marinara sauce was served on the side. They cut it in half for us and it was absolutely bursting - no air pockets here. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I complained the Diet coke tasted funny and they didn't really take it seriously. Another employee sampled it and said it was fine, "and that he could taste so much aspartame he could feel the tumor growing in his side." I ended up just throwing out my drink and refilling it with something else, so not a huge deal overall. I would recommend this place and hope I'll be back before we leave Durham. read more

Slices are too big; biggest I've seen in the Triangle. I guess size is a bigger competitive factor than taste. Randy's Pizza also has the thinnest slices I've ever seen. I mean amazingly thin, like they've achieved some kind of culinary/engineering miracle! And crisp too! The slices stay crisp because of the judicious application of sauce and cheese. The crust has no problem supporting the sauce and cheese, so no soggy crust or general sloppiness. The problem with Randy's pizza is the lack of flavor, like eating pizza when you have a bad cold. You know it's pizza, but the flavors are really subdued. Another drawback to Randy's super thin slices is that they don't hold heat for very long. My second slice was barely lukewarm by the time I finished my first. Expect to wait at Randy's. Not just the crowd but the general inefficiency of the staff and poor interior design make for much confusion. Despite my complaints, I found Randy's on par with other Triangle pizzerias. read more

I love Randy's! It is always good and fresh. I haven't tried enough other pizza places to *officially* crown it the best, but it is the best I have had in the area so far. The crust is really good. Thin, New York style. Sauce is always good, and there is always plenty of cheese. Delivery guys are always timely. I way prefer Randy's over Papa Johns. While Papa Johns has the convenience of ordering online, Randy's just tastes more... handmade and fresh. Also, I like that the pizzas are big "New York style" - this is a lot more convenient than Papa John's pizza sizes. read more

This is a small generic place in the Harris Teeter strip mall/plaza. There are several tables with chairs, with a narrow aisle between them and the counter, where you put in your order and grab your fountain sodas. They put my pie in the oven after I ordered it, which was a plus. I The place is warm and smells great. Lots of greasy food sizzling on their flat top. I only tried the cheese and pepperoni slices (same price for a slice with cheese and a slice with cheese + 1 topping). I agree, this is definitely thin New York style pizza. The proportion of cheese (there was a nice tight layer of cheese laid down), sauce, grease and salt was just right for me. The crust was al dente. Good stuff, definitely a guilty pleasure given how big the slices are! I did take out, and even though I rushed home with the slices, they had cooled down a lot, since they're so thin. 30 seconds in the microwave revived them. So I wouldn't take your slices to go unless you have some way to reheat them right before you eat. I'm pretty impressed that a place like this exists around here! If you're hunting for that New York pizza experience, I think this place does it justice. read more

My favorite pizza in the area. I love Randy's, it's big, floppy slices of New York style pizza with just enough sauce to notice and great toppings. If you like thick, bready pizza, don't come here, they only serve the good stuff. Two locations in south Durham, another at RTP, and another at Northgate. As a true pizza lover (college student), Randy's very much holds up to whatever standards you could seek to apply to it. It's good, I mean. That is, I mean to say, the quality is good. Are we clear? I wouldn't recommend Randy's as the kind of place to deliberately go... It's just not that joint. Don't get a whole pizza from here, either. It's better used as the kind of place that you pop into when you're in the area and are a bit peckish. Get one slice, maybe two, then be on your way before the grease in the air starts to colonize your skin. I'm giving Randy's five stars on account of the stark difference between them and some of the other pizza shops around here - i.e. the ones on Franklin Street. Firstly, the taste of the pizza is top notch, simply because these guys make the pizza when you order it. Think about that, every other place has them already in the display case and just reheats them. Secondly, the value is really good. The $5.99 combo gives you two ginormous slices with one topping each, and a drink. You'll never not be full after that. So, my cheese pizza came an hour after I ordered it due to confusion with my complicated address, and it was stiiiill delicious. But I am partial to room temperature pizza. Regardless, solid sauce that isn't too sour, floppy chewy/crispy crust that wasn't soggy, and good amount of cheese (slightly less salty than Amante's). 14" had 10 smallish slices (i.e., not those gigunda mammoth big slices you'd probably get if ordering by the slice) and with tax was $13.81. First time I went here a co-worker treated me to their #1 lunch special; 2(two) one topping slices and a drink for 5.99. Slices are gynormous and I couldn't finish the second slice. I dig the thin crust a lot and it's got the perfect amount of greasiness. A good rule of thumb for a pizza joint or bakery is that if it smells good when you walk it, then it's probably a good place. This is a small, generic-looking eatery directly next to the Harris Teeter on Marthin Luther King Pkwy. The pizza is generic too. Generic pizza, however, is a relative term. I'm originally from Chicago and we are privy to the finest pizzerias in the world. For Durham standards, Randy's Pizza is fresh and satisfactory. Their slices are large and usually dripping with grease. I also saw how they make their Garlic Knots; they heat up bread and pour garlic butter on it. I would have given this place of one (or 0 if possible), but the employees inside actually attempted to recover the relationship. I called in to order two calzones and the person on the telephone, which I was told later was the delivery driver, was incredibly short and rude and when I asked a couple of times for the price he finally got frustrated and hung up on me. Thankfully for this business I still continued to come and get the calzones, because the other employees inside overheard the conversation and were very apologetic for the person who was on the phone. I don't like Randy's pizza quite as much as I used to. I ordered for take-out recently. Their pizza seemed to lack sauce and thus flavor. As mentioned in other reviews, their pizza is so thin, it's not hot anymore by the time you get it home. I think eating in and getting pizza by the slice is the best way to go. For a chain a good traditional pizza with REAL mushrooms. Nice thin crust. Asked for it crispy and they did a good job. We also had the wings, which were small but tasty. Randy's is one of the few local pizza joints we have in Durham , and I think their New York style pizza is delicious. They have three locations in town, and I most often go to the one on MLK Blvd , where they have a modest number of seats both inside and out. In addition to the great pizza they have stromboli (my favorite), calzones, wings, and hot and cold subs. I haven't tried the subs or wings, but the stromboli is pretty good. I would definitely choose Randy's over one of the big chains, and with the frequent coupons we get in the mail, it's a good deal too. read more

The pizza is very much the classic New York thin crust style pizza. This a 'folder's' pizza. The standard pepperoni pizza has the reddish oil that takes a pile of napkins to soak up just like you would expect in this style. The salads are ok, nothing special but always fresh. I used to like this place for delivery or quick takeout. Unfortunately during my last visit when I ordered garlic knots the kid that was taking orders was a total jerk when I asked about their specials (which included free garlic knots with a large specialty pizza). First and foremost, they shouldn't advertise a special if they don't want to honor it, but since I wanted the garlic knots regardless, I mentioned that if honoring the special was an issue I'd be happy to pay for the garlic knots. After I paid for and picked up my to-go order, I brought it to a friend's house where we opened the order to discover that whatever punk prepared my order had given us a container full of burned meat leftover from their grill rather than the garlic knots I ordered. Additionally, the pizza was poorly prepared with all the toppings just tossed into the middle rather than spread evenly throughout. At the end of the day, I'm way more worried about getting the food I want than the price I pay, so if you're not willing to sell me items from your menu then I don't see why I should waste my time supporting your business. And more importantly, I don't spend money to be blatantly disrespected by employees working at a pizza joint. I'm not asking for special treatment, but if I'm going to spend money in a restaurant I do expect the employees to show basic human decency and respect for the people who spend money at the establishment. read more

Even though I've been in Durham for 15 years, I had never been to Randy's until recently. We weren't overly impressed with most of the pizza here. Besides the NY white and the classic Greek, all the pizzas we have had from here have been watery/greasy messes on top of sopping wet crust. But the two pizzas we liked were good enough for us to go back a few times. That is, until I noticed that they are charging 8% sales tax. Openly! (Sales tax in Durham County, NC at the time of writing is 7.75%.) When I questioned the staff about it, they respond with "that's our sales tax rate." Yes, it's just a few extra cents ($0.07 on my usual order), but it's the principle of the matter. Either they're reporting that and paying extra sales tax to the state, which would be annoying but not unethical, or they're keep that extra as profit in the guise of "sales tax". I have reported them to the NC Department of Revenue. If/when it gets corrected, I'll consider returning, but until then... read more

This is my favorite pizza place in the area. I have been coming to this location since they opened almost 20 years ago and I'm yet to be disappointed. Really every Randy's location I've been to is very consistent, and I should mention I worked at another location for a summer years ago and they absolutely take their tradecraft very seriously. They make their pizza dough and sauce from scratch daily, and they are both amazing! The crust is crispy, chewy, and light; and the sauce has a rich bold tomato flavor always with a noticeable oregano finish. They have the best cheese pizza I've had anywhere outside of NYC. Their specialty pizzas are just as good as their traditional ones, but the BBQ Chicken is the standout for me. Never seen this anywhere else, but they use a mustard based BBQ sauce with a great sweet vinegary flavor and it's just mixes perfectly with the chicken and mozzarella. I've also had their Hawaiian, Meat Lovers, Vegetarian, Margherita, and White Spinach, and liked them all. If your a fan of any of these pizzas you will love them from here. My favorite from that bunch is the white spinach and tomato. I should mention they have a lasagna pizza, which is another one I haven't seen elsewhere, that has meatballs on the pizza (which is the best if you have never had it), but it has too much ricotta on it for my taste, still a great pizza though. All the other pizza place fair is good here, sub's, garlic knots, chicken wings, calzones, stromboli, etc; but the pizza is amazing. read more

Randy's storefront is rather nondescript, located in a shopping center next to a Harris Teeter. It smells delicious right when you walk in. This is easily the best NY-style thin-crust pizza in Durham. The two slice deal is more than enough food for the average person since the slices are HUGE. I think they must come from 20" pies. The chicken parmesan sandwich is a must-try too. Do yourself a favor and get it to go because there's absolutely no ambiance to speak of. read more

I've tried Randy's pizza three times. The first time I ordered was a Sunday afternoon and was told it would take 45 minutes to an hour. That's fine I guess (even though I live only 2 miles away). The thing that really bothered me was that the price that I was charged was much more than it was listed on the menu online. When I confronted the person on the phone they just said "Oh, we haven't updated it" I was like "Okay...? " waiting for an apology or something.. but nope. It seems like poor business practices to raise the prices and not inform the customers that are keeping you in business. The second time I ordered I was told the wait would be 45 minutes to an hour again. After an hour and a half of waiting I finally called and they told me that it was on it's way. Again I was like "Okayy...?" and the person on the phone said nothing. So I just had to specifically ask if they were going to make right on misleading me again. They took $7 off my order and I received my cold pizza shortly after. The third time I ordered my pizza was hot and delicious and at my door step in a half an hour. Overall the pizza is pretty good so I will give them one more chance. I used to live in the NY/NJ area and often find it hard to get good NY style pizza anywhere else. Randy's is doing something right. If the owners are reading this I would suggest being honest about the prices on the menus, get rid of the delivery fees, and hire more delivery drivers so that the pizza doesn't show up cold. read more
