[[HIGHLIGHT]]Rangeen calls itself Indian-Californian, which in a tired little strip mall can sound like the kind of identity crisis best avoided.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'd driven past it plenty of times on the way to the dog groomer and never once felt compelled to stop. Friday night changed that. We were hungry, but not sit-down-for-two-hours hungry. We wanted something better than fast food, but not some overproduced evening of cocktails and self-importance. We wanted food worth getting out of the car for. Rangeen hit that mark beautifully. Getting my wife on board took some work. She's not a curry person. But a few online photos of fresh, vibrant salads were enough to win her over. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside, the place still showed traces of whatever came before it, a blank quick-serve menu screen hanging awkwardly over the counter, like a relic from another life.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But this was table service, and a perfectly comfortable one at that. There were maybe eight or nine tables, and one lone server holding down the front of house. Casual, older, thin, moving with purpose. She greeted us warmly, dropped menus, answered the phone, checked back often, kept the table tidy, and somehow managed to make the whole room feel cared for without a hint of drama. I went for the spicy mango chicken. My wife chose a healthy-looking salad with grilled sweet potatoes, nuts, and all the things I generally avoid unless someone smarter than me orders them first. We added naan, because not ordering naan would have been foolish. The food took a few minutes longer than the impatient part of your brain might expect. But then it arrived, and suddenly none of that mattered. My dish was excellent: nicely seasoned bite-sized pieces of chicken, rice, a fresh side salad, and a spicy sauce that pulled the whole thing together with real intention. And the plating, that was the surprise. This wasn't tossed on a plate like an afterthought from the spot next to the grocery store. It looked like someone actually gave a damn. And that, really, is what stays with you. Not just that the food was good, but that care had gone into it. The ingredients may not have been expensive, I say that as someone who owns restaurants and knows roughly what things cost, but value isn't about raw food cost. It's about what arrives at the table, how it's presented, and whether anybody in the building seems to care if you enjoy it. At $19, this was a steal. For about the price of a drive-thru burger meal, I got something thoughtful, well executed, and satisfying enough to remind me why local places like this matter. And to the party of four next to us who only left a five-dollar tip: do better. read more

It's an interesting dish to try out. - Curry (Lamb). The lamb was tender and well-braised while the tomato-based sauce was rich, tangy, and perfectly balanced with warm spices and a mild heat. Comforting, flavorful, and definitely something I'd order again. - Curry (Saag Paneer). Mild and earthy, this features soft cubes of paneer in a smooth, velvety spinach sauce. This place is right by Ralph's and was empty at lunch. I got a $15 lunch special. It comes with Chana (chickpeas), rice, one entree, raita and naan. I picked chicken tikka masala. I enjoyed the chicken tikka but that was about it. The Chana was so bland. Chicken tikka was really good but I wish it came in a big portion. The service was great. read more

Rangoon Kitchen calls itself an "Indi Cali Kitchen" - if you're expecting authentic Indian food, prepare to be disappointed. The flavors here are very restrained and there's no spicy heat either. We got a couple of lunch combos - saag paneer and paneer tikka masala ($14.99). (After seeing the photos of the chicken tikka masala, which looked liked small bits of grilled chicken dumped on top of the sauce, paneer seemed like the better choice.) The masala sauce was on the sweet side. The combos came with chana masala, rice, raita and garlic naan. The garlic naan was my fave part of the meal. I'm guessing there's not much competition for Indian food in South OC, which is why this place has such high ratings. Plenty of parking in the lot. read more

One of the best places I ate Indian food at in socal. Ambiance is minimalist ambiance and peaceful. The food served was perfectly timed. No delays. There were three of us dining here and we ordered masala chai to begin with, saag paneer, 3 whole wheat roti and hara bhara kabaab. The quantities are generous, and curries come with rice on the side. I think hara bhara kabaab was more than I needed, but we still managed to finish it, because it was that tasty. Rangeen Kitchen is quickly becoming one of my happy places in South OC. It is bright, cozy, and colorful, and you can feel the Indi Cali thing as soon as you sit down. It feels casual enough to bring kids, but the flavors are absolutely grown up. We started with the Pani Puri and the Gobhi Manchurian. The Pani Puri is everything you want in that first bite, crisp semolina puris that you fill and dunk so you get the hit of potatoes, spiced water, and sweet tamarind in one shot. The Gobhi Manchurian is addictive, fried cauliflower tossed in a sweet, tangy, spicy sauce with just enough ginger and chili that you keep reaching back "just for one more piece." The kids were thrilled with the Chicken Tender Meal - kids, which comes with chicken tenders and fries and actually feels like real food instead of an afterthought on the menu. For mains, we shared the Plate: Paneer Tikka and the Plate: Chicken Mango Habanero Chicken Tikka. Both arrive beautifully plated with herb salad, rice, and tikka sauce, which makes it really easy to share. The Paneer Tikka is grilled paneer and bell peppers, nicely charred, with lime pickled onions on top that cut through the richness in the best way. The Chicken Mango Habanero Chicken Tikka is the star, juicy grilled chicken smothered in a sweet and spicy mango habanero sauce with bell peppers. It has a slow, pleasant heat and never tips into "too sweet," especially when you drag a piece through the tikka sauce and the rice. Drinks and dessert were such a fun part of the meal. We tried two of the the Masala Chai, and a Mango Lassi. The Masala Chai comes hot and fragrant, with warm spices that feel like a hug in a cup, and the Mango Lassi is creamy and not overly sweet, a great reset between bites of spice. We finished with Gulab Jamun, soft, warm, and soaked in syrup with that hint of cardamom and rose that lets you know someone cared about the details. Service is where Rangeen really shines. Jaime gave us genuinely some of the best service I have had in the area. He was super attentive and kind, checked on us often without hovering, walked us through the menu, and took care of us like it was his own restaurant. By the end of the meal we felt like family, not just another table to turn. Between the thoughtful food, kid friendly options, and the way Jaime and the team take care of you, Rangeen Kitchen is absolutely going into our regular rotation. read more

This is an "Indi-Cali" restaurant vs. a traditional Indian one. I had not known that and had warned my fellow diners about how hot/spicy Indian food can be. I cautioned them to make sure they didn't order something that was too spicy. It turned out that my warning was not needed. Everything was gently spiced and extremely tasty. Each dish had a refreshing blend of sauces, spices and intricate flavors. Service was on the slow side, but that was because each dish was freshly prepared, and not pre-cooked. The chicken in my dish was fully cooked and, at the same time, moist and tender. Portions were substantial and prices were reasonable. I look forward to my next visit. read more

I ordered what I thought was the butter chicken according to the waiter, but it's not the butter chicken we all have come to love. They were slices of grilled chicken on top of a thick spicy sauce, it wasn't creamy and the chicken weren't cubes of chicken breast like I was told. Pleasantly surprised by my experience at Rangeen. I didn't have high expectations because I haven't had really good Indian food in South OC, however Rangeen was an exception. Service was very friendly. We got garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, chicken saag, and a flatbread. Everything was delicious. Let restaurant week commence!! We started off with lunch at Rangeen. Here are my thoughts on each item: Appetizer Gobi Manchurian - Crispy, flavorful, balanced. Make sure you eat thr bell peppers in every bite, it makes a difference. Chana masala - I found this to be bland but a bit of mint chutney balanced it out for me. You may want to order this medium spice level. Paneer masala - you can tell the shahi turka is freshly made, I can taste the nut base. The paneer was added on top. I think thry fry it with garam masala. Don't be fooled by the rice it looked heavy but was light! Jaime served me throughout my dining experience he's got a good attitude and is helpful. Samosa: got a double order, these were just OK if I'm honest. Some pockets didn't have any filling and I don't love it when the flavor is too sweet heavy (cardamom? not sure). 3/5 Chicken tikka masala: Chicken was a little over cooked, which is the usual from Indian restaurants when it's delivered for this dish, the actual chicken was above average ( less over cooked than usual ). Sauce is also very good, hard to go wrong. However, the quantity of chicken is quite low so have to give 4/5 Cheese naan: quite inauthentic, but I must admit, veryyyy tasty. 5/5 Gobhi: this was delightful, had a Manchurian flavor profile, and I scarfed down immediately. Best of the dishes we ordered. 5/5 Pav Bhaji: The bread came in piping hot - the vegetable mash also really solid in terms of flavor. The portion is a little small but it's an appetizer and since I will definitely order again I must give it 5/5 Yellow dal: this was good, not great, definitely needed salt. And overall flavor profile was bland, although it is the healthier food so I get why that happens. 3/5 Saag and Lamb Meatball: Ate only the saag and it was flavorless. I added my own seasonings to try to spruce it up to make it no just a filling/nonpoisonous dinner option. I admit I did order as mildly spiced in an effort to get a child to eat it. Will try the saag again but if ordered as mild have to say it was 2/5. With my additions it got up to 3/5. Pana Cotta: Definitely should have ordered gulab jamun ... this was not very tasty. Not sure if it was trying to be a healthy type dessert but it was very very light and I didn't really get those subtle flavors of rose, etc. 2/5. What I loved about this restaurant was the menu designations! G - Gluten Free, D - Dairy Free, N - Nut Free, V - Vegan. It's hard when I have a group at my house and everyone has their special dietary restriction so it's hard to do family style ordering at most restaurants but this menu made it easy. All said and done I think part of the "Just Ok" designation is in my ordering - will give this restaurant another chance but they certainly are not as spicy as other places so level UP on your spiciness level when you order folks! Suggestions I have for the restaurant: 1) Really appreciate the pictures on the menu when I'm trying to get other people to order - would love if every item had a photo! 2) I like raita but not beets - if there were a plain raita option I would order it for sure. read more

Small cozy place with a lovely, colorful decor. Excellent customer service and didn't have to wait too long for food. We got free papadum, wonderfully light and crispy with good taste. The dip that came with it was a great complement. The Beets & Figs salad has goat cheese, oranges, mint,  and roasted chipotle pumpkin seeds. Beautiful to the eye and tasted so yummy! The lamb meatballs were a great addition to this salad! The Matcha Shikanji was not our favorite. Too sour and not enough matcha. Liked the Marigold- passion fruit more. LOVE their Tikka Masala! This time I chose to get it with the lamb meatballs and medium heat! Just the right amount of spice and oh so flavorful!! Perfect over rice! It's such a great place to sit and talk. Carmen and I was sitting there so long after we finished dinner that we ended up ordering dessert. So glad we did. The dessert platter is a must. Everything on it is not too sweet but has all the goodness and flavors. The mango mousse filled golgappa dipped in chocolate has a nice crunch with that liquid gold! The Kulfi was a delight! Loved the bits of pistachio in it! The Saffron & rose pana cotta was beautiful! The refreshing saffron rose pana cotta was firm and creamy.
