Negative stars!! Not busy. Waited 10 minutes to be seated. Waited 10 minutes for a server which we had to get up and ask for someone. No drinks, didn't ask if we wanted. Dude spoke so soft had to tell him to speak up!! Food took about 15 minutes which was fine. In that 15 minutes server never came back to our table. We asked another server for refills of water & to speak to the manager. Now this is where it gets interesting. We watched the server tell the manager that we wanted to speak to him. He flat out ignored our request up to the point where we just paid the check & were getting ready to leave. Manager guy says "you wanna speak to me". WTF did you just say???? We lol and said nope 3x. Why? How about introduce yourself accordingly, maybe ask how our food was maybe ask how the service was.... call me crazy but WTF happen to this dudes professionalism. Never coming back to this over priced shitty service restaurant again!!! Much better places in town that would appreciate your business. read more

Best sushi in Modesto! I can always ask the server for recommendations depending on if I'm in the mood for a cooked roll or a raw non-sauced "traditional" style roll. The garlic edamame is amazing, slightly spicy and plentiful. They offer a great variety of alcohol- my fav being a nice old fashioned on the rocks. If I'm feeling a little spicier, the fresh jalapeño lemondrop (sugared rim of course) is tangy and hits the spot! Big props for having a huge selection of Gallo wines and vodka! It can get a busy on the weekends, don't be surprised if the reservations fill up! The hostess nicely explained to me that they only take 3 reservations per every half hour, to ensure that they don't overbook. Totally understandable and I can appreciate them having plenty of tables for my walk in. Plus the sushi, drinks and service are worth waiting for so I don't mind! The menu states that they will not split a check for parties of more than 4. We asked our server at the very beginning (before ordering) if she would split our checks and she happily obliged and even thanked us for informing her! (Side note: I always thought it was common knowledge to tell your server when you are first sat that you'd like split checks) There's a huge free parking garage around the corner that has a 2 hour limit for lunch time and no Limit for dinner time. We usually park there. It is well lit and safely right across from the police station. Dante's inferno roll is my ultimate fav! Sesame tuna and fresh raw salmon with tempura jalapeños, nice and saucy, slightly spicy and crunchy!!! I'm also loving the snow crab rainbow roll lately. Real crab, an assortment of raw fish/eel and lightly sauced- it's a great variety and fresh tasting. The yellowtail razor and escolar razor are cut perfectly thin, with a sprinkling of fresh jalapeño, a little ponzu sauce and a nice mound of diacon (Japanese style radish). For lunch I like the spicy neggi hamma (yellow tail) hand roll or the spicy tuna hand roll. They look like a cute sushi burrito. The seaweed is rolled into a cone with everything including the rice, fish and sauces inside. Conveniently picked up and eaten. I can always ask the servers for their recommendations. The servers are knowledgeable and have introduced me to a few of my most favorite things! They do not offer dessert, so I usually opt for a glass of red wine. Always generously poured. The Justin cab is my go to, it's not too dry but also not overly sweet. Somewhere right in the middle. I come here often and I'm always looking forward to my next visit. By far the best place in Modesto high quality fresh fish it's worth the wait and never disappoints. Owner is always there making sure every customer is happy. Even if you don't like sushi they have many other menu items that are just as good as their fish. read more

We tried to make reservations for my son's 18th birthday but we're told they don't take reservations for Friday and Saturday nights. We showed up at 515 and were told it would be a 60 minute wait. We've been here at least 50 times and it was worth the wait. We were a party of 8 so we expected a wait. We watched the hostess sit two parties of 8 that arrived after us. After 90 minutes of watching people get seated before us I asked the hostess for the 3rd time what was going on. When I asked what happened she said they had reservations. I asked to talk to the owner who tried to tell me there was a miscommunication. There was no miscommunication. The hostess decided to seat friends of the wait staff. We celebrate milestones here previously but never again! It's who you know! If you want to make it a private restaurant, do it do the rest of us commoners won't try to go! read more

We were going to get some Thai food but the wait was long to be seated and by the time we would get our food we would probably be super hungry. We walked around and found this gem! I loved everything about it. It was packed! Because of lunch time. The hostess and waitress were really nice and provided great service. Even though everyone was in suit and tie and I was dressed casually they treated us nicely. The options for food were pretty good! I decided to get the lunch rice plate and it came with a side salad. And I ordered a Philadelphia roll because I'm a fan of cream cheese. I was told I could add cream cheese to my choice of sushi but I didn't want to over complicate things. It was delicious! I like it raw. Unadulterated. Rough. Abrasive. And a bit fishy. I'm talking about the abundance of sushi and other gems from the sea, what did you think I was talking about? First off I can already see this place turning into a gold mine being just a few short blocks away from the Gallo Center. My friend brought to my attention that they took over the space of a failed restaurant called Bacchus and reinvented it while also recycling some elements which I found to be interesting. It has an industrial feel while also incorporating warm colors like caramel, chocolate and while we're at it, hazelnut. A veritable chic sundae if you will. From the moment I walked in and was seated, I was very pleased. Add in a great waitress, not-so overwhelming menu, superb atmosphere including great music and of course great company. The food was the shining star though as it should be with fresh ingredients, stellar presentation (my plate was a painter's pallet) and flavor beyond what I've experienced at other sushi restaurants in town. I ordered two rolls, the Philly and Spider. Both were incredible in their own right. The Philly consisted of salmon, rice and cream cheese lightly battered and fried. Everything in that roll played very well not to mention the teriyaki ginger drizzle (that was a little harder to identify but great nonetheless). On the flipside, the Spider was equally blue ribbon quality with soft shell crab being the star. Honestly I wasn't a soft shell crab fan wholeheartedly until a few years ago and this version further expanded my love as it was not overdone or overbearing. I feel like I've rambled enough of my ode to Raw so I'll just leave it at this...I'm coming back whether they like it or not with more recruits. read more

If you go to Raw sushi bistro expecting a traditional sushi experience, you might be disappointed. BUT It is REALLY GOOD!! This is more of a Fusion project and it should be appreciated as such.. A fun and very trendy ,hip place to go with friends or even a date night. Kinda reminds me of Santa Row, It can get VERY packed and busy so I suggest making reservations, or getting in early enough before a dinner rush to get a table. But the bar (not a full sushi bar) is okay to sit at. Music plays loudly and groups can be just as loud, but like I said it's a trendy spot in Downtown Modesto. Apparently they even have a DJ playing music on some Friday nights. And with this restaurant having a full service bar, and speciality cocktails I can see this place being a chill spot for yummy sushi, drinks and converstations with friends. I honestly wouldn't recommend bringing your kids here on weekend evening for dinner, but maybe during lunch on the weekdays? FRESH and Delicious Sushi rolls and from all other yelpers reviews had to try the Dante Inferno and was not at all disappointed! We started with appetizers of Edamame with garlic and cheese (yummy) Fried Shumai (Japanese style fried shrimp pot stickers) Ahi poke margarita ( good but portion size was so small) For our main meal: Dante Inferno roll: This did not disappoint at all an was absolutely DELICIOUS! Just the right amount of spice and flavor and the tempura jalapeños looked and tasted so good so it Very much complimented the gorgeous plating of the roll and helped add that extra spice. *A MUST TO HAVE HERE* Snow Crab Roll: a California roll with of course snow crab, it was good, Nigiri: Hamachi (yellow tail) -yummy! Sake ( smoked salmon) -good Spicy tempura scallop -HEAVEN Uni (sea urchin) -yummy Hotate (scallop) super yummy FRESH, fresh, and AWESOME! Nothing more to say than that. I was very pleased with my overall experience here! I came in for lunch to satisfy my craving for some good quality rolls. I started off with the edamame, which was free with a yelp check-in. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of edamame they gave me, and they were warm too! I thought it was weird that their specialty rolls didnt have prices listed?! Maybe this was to prevent people steering away from ordering their special rolls bc of their price? Idk. But I just ordered the lomi lomi roll and the cruchy rainbow roll. Lomi lomi roll was very clean and simple, which I enjoyed. The crunchy rainbow roll was good, but it definitely had more sauce drizzled on top compared to the lomi lomi roll. If youre into more sauce/flavor on your rolls, I highly suggest the crunchy rainbow roll! Overall, I thought the ambiance was great, thr service was great, and the food was on point . Had been suggested this place to eat and so I decided to try it out! Entering the restaurant we were appropriately greeted and were directed to our table despite them about to close in 20 minutes. Service was hospitable. My daughter dropped her chopsticks and our server came back promptly with a fresh set of chopsticks. I never felt rushed to hurry and leave either. The food was excellent, definitely sushi grade fish. I always pick the chirashi to check how fresh the food is. I would have liked to have seen Saba shioyaki on the menu, but it IS called RAW, so what could a person expect. I tried the salted salmon and it was moist, not too overdone like most places, but cooked throughout. The amount of salad dressing was a little too much for my taste, so if you like your salad light on dressing request it on the side. So far I can say the food is incredibly good for Modesto. I will need to make a return visit for a variety of food. Portions are as expected, so that's a good thing. I did not try the Gyoza since it was reserved for my kids. The wine list is pretty decent as well. My glass was pretty good. The aesthetics were quite pretty and sophisticated, seating was extremely comfortable as well, however the prices were fair and the dress attire can go as casual as a pair of shorts and a t-shirt or as high end as a prom dress. Either attire would be acceptable if that makes any sense! I did not check out the bathrooms so I may have to come back and amend this entry and rating. We shall see! ;-) read more

April 8, 2017 visit. Went on a Friday night. 8pm. Was packed. Sat at the bar while waiting for a table that would take 20 mins. (They forgot about us) We decided to just order our food at the bar. First my guy had a Heineken while I had two drinks. A Mango drink and another which I forgot. We ordered the ranch garlic edamame. Omg this was SO good! Then I ordered a beef teriyaki plate. I was encouraged to try sushi so I ordered the BTS roll. (No caviar. Chili oil) He: Dantes Inferno I am allergic to shellfish and I told the guy. No prob. To my surprise, the first time I eat sushi and it was so delish!!! I ate two filling pieces and nibbled on the beef teriyaki plate which was just as delicious. All in all the food was fantastic and I will go back again. It was well priced for two with 2 cocktails and beers (95 incl tip) but worth it all. Ambience was good. About 9:00 pm they turned up the music and it took on a kinda club vibe. Good music. Top shelf liquors also. read more

Started off with the spicy tuna ceviche. it was amazing. at first it had a strong lemon flavor, but after smashing through the top layer it was some good grub. I had the dantes inferno roll. it had tempura shrimp and avocado topped with salmon tuna and a little roe. it was garnished with tempura jalapeños. The roll was awesome. I came this evening on October 20, 2018 to celebrate my daughters bday with a good dinner. I called ahead of time to reserve a table and Raw accommodated. The problem was that we waited at our table for a really long time and no one came to our table not even to ask if we wanted water. It wasn't even busy, I could see if it was. All the hostess told us was she was sorry only because I told her. No one acknowledged us if I would not had said anything. A lot of the rolls have sauce, which is a bit annoying, but they are delicious and well made. The service at the bar and in the restaurant has been top notch and friendly every time I visited. This is the best sushi place in Modesto hands down! Everything from food, service, and ambiance. Alex and tommy always make sure I'm being taken care of. They have a great selection of food! Although the name is RAW not everything is served raw lol. One of my favorite cooked items is the beef wrapped asparagus. Delish! Udon here is waaay better than those I've had at sushi garden and mikis. On the raw side, the Tuna tatare is on point, the yellowtail is my fav, and the Dantes appetizer on a wonton chip thing that chef Phu and Bill whip up is a MUST-TRY!!!!! I've tried at least 6 rolls and they're all pretty and yummy! One thing I must point out, is that I noticed these chefs use less "rice" compared to the ratio of fish/crab/cucumber/filling so I can actually taste what's in it. Overall, I love this place! It's not the same anywhere else. Plus, there's pretty waitresses and bartenders. On the weekends it gets really busy so I recommend reservations for larger groups. read more

As a former Stockton resident I was familiar with their food, style and presentation so when I heard that they were opening a new location in Modesto I knew I had to make the drive to taste their amazing sushi once again! We have been coming here for years and the sushi is always outstanding, but today we had a horrible experience that I've never dealt with at any other restaurant before. We were degraded and embarrassed in front of a packed dining room including colleagues from my sister's work. We were approached by the manager and accused of not paying our bill and dining and dashing the last time we were there. We were extremely confused because we most definitely paid. We questioned them and asked for the footage they had and it wasn't even us. She was extremely rude about the situation and embarrassed us without even knowing for sure that it was us. They were right! What a fun lunch. Tried my first Saki Bomb! Saki on top of chopsticks over a Japanese beer. Pound the table, Saki drops into the beer and you guzzle down. The beef teriyaki was delicious! Served with flaky rice and a small green salad which was a great and light substitute for a green veggie. Light enough for a classy lunch. The atmosphere was great and more towards the fancier end! Everyone was mostly dressed in business casual but my boyfriend and I came in kinda bummy-ish clothes but no one seemed to care. The waiters and the host were VERY nice, especially the waiter (she was very attentive!) Prices are really good for 10 pieces of sushi. Regular Rolls were around $9-$13 and the special rolls are around $14-$15. Taste was pretty good, maybe around a 3.75 / 5 stars Best roll we got was the Dante's Inferno Roll and although the description makes it seem spicy, it really isn't! (My boyfriend isn't fond of spicy and he thought it was totally fine!) Only reason why it's a 4/5 is because the sushi compared to how the place looked, was just "pretty good" and not outstanding. Best sushi in Modesto hands down! Brush up on your chopstick skills and come to this place for sushi, leave the kids at home, and call ahead for a reservation if you can. I highly recommend the Dante's Inferno, the Dragon Roll and Spider Roll. The location of raw is where the old Bacchus business was. There is a small, outdoor smoking patio with casual seating and low height coffee tables. Inside, the decor is very similar to what it was, simple, classy, and small with minimal Asian flair. We have typically gone on a Saturday, for date night, and it's busy. This last time we went with 3 adults and 2 children, we were told we should have made reservations but still got seated after waiting in the outdoor patio for about 15 minutes. I was a little disappointed this last time. We were warned at the time we were sat that orders were taking about 40 minutes to come out. So we quickly ordered food for our kids and the adults. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER... we got our food, which was pretty ridiculous. Not sure what the problem was. The music was pretty loud and had an upbeat fun playlist so our kids were dancing in their seats for the majority of the time while we waited for our food. Thank goodness for that and iPhone apps to keep them entertained that long. We did go with our children ages 2.5 and 4, who are pretty well behaved, but this place is definitely not kid-friendly. We weren't offered any type of high chair or booster. Thank goodness we were sat in a booth so we could keep our kids from "spilling out!" We ordered a teriyaki chicken dinner and had them split it into 2, the portion was more than enough for them. (Served with dark meat.) I definitely will not be bringing my kids back, they love sushi, we just can't keep kids entertained that long! Hopefully the order wait-time was an isolated incident in which the kitchen was behind. I've got a few serious seafood allergies, so generally avoid sushi places, but it was date night, so I braved it. the atmosphere is great at Raw - seems like a nice place right when you walk in. the hostess (who was also our server) was friendly and helpful. we got a seat and water immediately. we chose an unfiltered sake- and asked our server for that recommendation. she referred to the bartender and the choice was perfect. the menu is comprehensive, and we started with the beef carpaccio. it's spicy and delicious. next was the tuna sashimi and the shark bite roll. the sashimi was extremely fresh and very tasty. it was plated beautifully as well. the description of the shark bite till in the menu says tuna, tempura shrimp, etc. when it arrived, it was also decorated with caviar. because of my allergies, I would have asked them to hold that had it been listed on the menu, but it isn't, so nervously I inquired about the roe. our friendly server didn't hesitate to ask the sushi artist to immediately make another, without the roe. the remake was swift, again, plated beautifully and delicious.
