Been going to Ray's for decades -- all the way back to high school days. Have eaten everything on the short menu, and enjoy all of them. With no indoor seating (only a couple of outdoor picnic tables), Ray's is as much a drive-in as takeout joint. I've spent many an hour sitting in my car in the parking lot, devouring burger and fries while listening to sports talk radio. 4 stars instead of 5 because Ray's does not serve high quality food. Thin, lower grade patties compare with White Castle for both flimsyness but also addictiveness. Likewise the fries. But if you were to try to compare to Five Guys, which serve highest quality burgers and fries made to order without mass produced meat and hand-cut fries, you'll be on the wrong track. Ray's does not come close to that level of quality, grade and flavor of meat, freshness of potatoes. But Ray's must be judged on its own merits, being in an entirely different category than Five Guys or Bagger Dave's -- those are "craft" burger boutiques while Ray's is fast food. So because they are in a category with McD's and BK, Ray's stands head and shoulders above the global fast food chains for both taste and quality. From that perspective Ray's is a four-star, and factoring in the incredibly low prices I would be tempted to push it to 4 1/2. I find the burgers to be delicious despite the meat, I don't like the heavily breaded perch but the more lightly battered cod is very good, the chicken is fine, and of course the fries are beyond addictive. One negative: no matter what flavor I try, the shakes all taste like vanilla to me. Take the time to visit this throwback icon drive-in, serving better food than chains and a far greater value to top it off. read more

It's a shame about Ray's. For it may have nostaglic value for my beautiful wife, but for me, well, it's the local version of any fast food burger joint. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not anything special if you didn't grow up with the memory of childhood visits. The burgers are more akin to sliders (both in size and thickness of the patty). The fries, though hot and very salty, weren't anything more than standard food service crinkle cuts. The shake we ordered (chocolate, one of many flavors), was good, but so thick that I thought I was going to pop a blood vessel trying to drink it. Perhaps it works better when it is 95 degrees out? Service was friendly and despite having the appearance of a place that would be cash only, they're not. The "drive-in" part of their name bugs me -- if they mean you can drive into the parking lot, get out of your car, and walk inside, then it is correct. So don't get your hopes up. read more

This is one of my favorite places in west Michigan to grab a burger and fries. Going here reminds me of the great place we would go to on summer days when we were younger and restaurants were a much cooler to eat at .This is a fun place. Check it out for a great time read more

American Graffiti in Grand Haven. Ray's serves burgers like mcDonalds used to. No sit-down, unless you have a nice day and you can choose to sit outside at a picnic table. Rays serves great burgers and their fries are among the most addicting fries I've ever had- crispy, rather than limp/soggy. I've also had the fried fish and shrimp, which I enjoy. Ray's shakes are awesome as well. I know a guy who always stops at Ray's as he drives up to northern Michigan. read more

Great burgers, french fries are the best, and super thick milkshakes. If you are going to complain about the thick real milk & ice cream shakes, go down the road to McD's for a runny fake shake. They ARE thick here, suck your brains out! Outstanding perch dinner, perch sandwich, and shrimp dinner. And you will always get more fries than ordered. Fast friendly service that is always appreciated. I eat here 2 times a week or more. If you see a line out the door at any restaurant, stop there and try the food (this is that place). Lifelong Grand Haven resident and have frequented Ray's for 30 years. Went here last week for old times sake and I was really disappointed. I understand times change but good lord the new burger buns are really truly awful. They are so dry that they take away from the rest of the burger. Also the condiment ratio was a joke. Had to put more ketchup on when I got home because the sponge bun absorbed it all. The fries were hot and perfect and exactly what I anticipated. The root beer shake was good. I think the cups are getting smaller for the price, however. Makes me hesitant to go back and revisit the once phenomenal shrimp dinner. read more

I've been coming here for years and somehow managed to not review it until now. Great family owned place with a fantastic sign, friendly service, and really inexpensive eats. That being said... The burgers seem to have changed at Ray's and not for the better. Formerly a great 1930's style burger, they seem to have changed the patties over to a pre-fab McDonald's style burger resulting in a HUGE drop in quality. Boo. My heart broke when I contemplated my sad little burger yesterday, recalling their former beefy and delicious glory. If you go, I strongly suggest getting a double as the patties are so minuscule now that even tiny-eater me was unsatisfied. Unbelievably disappointing. Fries and shakes are still great and the staff is as friendly as ever. Two burgers, fries and beverages ran us under $10, so very affordable as well. 3 stars for the food, 4 stars for being a landmark in Grand Haven and surviving when other family owned joints have gone under. read more

Shakes are great and they have really good double-cheese burgers and fries, but those of you that are looking for "big juicy thick burgers" (and then posting negative reviews) are in the wrong place and just don't get it. These are classic "drive-in" burgers - thin cheesy burgers on classic buns. You can order and eat 2-3 of these burgers. It's reminiscent of a classic place in Chicago called Bill's on north Western Ave. I love this place and stop by whenever I'm in Grand Haven. read more

Ive always loved the food here, but their process with having Park and Order spots, and they bring the food out to you is quite wonderful so you never have to get out of your vehicle. Everyone is masked and gloved when handling your food. Definitely worth the drive out of my way to go there for a great burger and fries. read more

Absolutely the best burger joint in town, with amazing, totally addictive fries. You can't go wrong with this place. The lines are typically long, but it's worth the wait and I'm not going to knock off any stars for that. The long lines just represent how popular this place is, and they work pretty hard at whipping through the orders as fast as possible. Little known fact: you can request bacon on your burger...and it makes it even more awesome! My only complaint (if you could call it that) is that they used to do mini-burgers without the buns for our furry family members (our doggies), but this is no longer available and I wish they would bring it back. read more

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!! what a place! all they serve is burgers, a fish sandwich, a chicken sandwich, a few fish dinners, and a chicken strip meal. with a lomited menu, it gives them the time to focus on their staples.... Just what you should expect. Decent burgers, fries and shakes. Prices are reasonable. Add a little extra value for the nostalgia and friendly service and this is a pretty good burger joint. About 15 years ago, this place was not bad at all. Actually unique from the chain fast food burger joints. But new ownership saw prices go up and quality come down. Not worth the visit. I've been eating at rays for 30 years. It's been a tradition in my family since I can remember and my parents have been eating there for longer. Last night we went in and not only had to wait almost half an hour for our food, but it was terrible. Burgers were over cooked and the buns were stale. Seemed like there wasn't much management going on behind the counter as the employees were just messing around on a busy Saturday night. Please bring back the service and delicious food!! read more

What can I say! This place has been here as long as I have been on this planet. It is located near where I grew up so I used to go a lot. While the food is not amazing it is not some crazy creation from some far off county. No nonsense approach to a burger joint. The menu consist of Burgers/Fries/Shakes. There are also a few different fish choices (but after all these years I still have not had them) as well as some chicken items. Many different flavors of shake are available. (Root Beer!) ... Secret menu item may include the "Chicken Double Cheese Burger" ... I loved it! Fries come in 1 size, so make sure to order a couple. read more

Visited with family, including two children We were very much looking forward to visiting, but were very disappointed. Pros - decent variation from the normal "ho-hum" menus, nostalgic/historic, decent pricing Cons - if there was a "worst customer service" award what we observed would put them in the running....counter server eye-rolling at different customers when they ordered and asked for help, no greetings whatsoever, not a single smile...in fact they acted almost annoyed by customer presence which is most strange, customers felt they were somehow an inconvenience....everyone (many families) around the picnic tables outside were talking about how rude and intense the counter staff were....some making jokes, food was okay but not worth the poor service As an aside, the place is no longer a drive-in and they need to change their name so people new to the area are aware. Would we go back? Not if we saw the same counter staff. There are to many good restaurants that value their customers. Disappointed. read more

I grew up here and Rays has always been a staple of the town. The burgers are really basic and kind of shoddy but I've always found them to be tasty. Quality seems to have decreased somewhat over the years, and there's a rude older woman with long hair who sucks. She's short with customers and coworkers, blatantly yelling at other employees when it started to get busy. I still go though bc I like the burgers and fries, just hope that lady isn't working. read more

Quick, cheap, and delicious perch. Yup, Ray's definitely fits the summertime beach trip bill. The perch is pretty fresh and crunchy fried with cornmeal breading. Dinners come with coleslaw and fries, or double fries. Perch sandwiches have ample tartar sauce, which could use more relish. Milkshakes are cheap, and if you get the large, HUGE. Stopped here because they claim to have the best burgers in town. I've had better in the school cafeteria. So plain, no flavor despite ordering the "deluxe". The customer service was ridiculous as well. The teenagers behind the counter clearly did not want to be there and could care less about their customers. The milkshake was basically soft serve in a styrofoam cup and while mine was the vanilla and did not require any additional flavoring, it was not even stirred up prior to being served. Whenever I'm in Grand Haven, I try to stop by Ray's. I can't say that Ray's is the BEST burger I've ever eaten, but for a fast lunch break at a low price, you can't beat it. When I went to bed tonight, I actually closed my eyes and could not get the vision of the cheeseburger, fries and chocolate shake from my mind. It brought me back to high school and the thrill of walking over on those special occasions for lunch sitting at the picnic tables - the smell of the French fry and dipping it in the shake - its not what one usually does as ketchup does go better most of the time - however at Rays it was the whole experience especially at that age - and those fries! --- I almost compare the experience of going to phaffs drug store while attending Ferry School and sitting at the soda fountain counter in sixth grade. --- the TV show "Happy Days" had nothing on us when growing up in our great town! read more

Amazing burgers & fries! The patties are kinda thin so if you wanna be able to get a good bite atleast get a double burger but they also offer a triple burger & other menu items that are good. It's small, so when they get busy they get crowded really really fast but the staff stays super organized & friendly every time! read more

I think I remember eating here as a kid, but I'm not really sure if this is the place. We were in Grand Haven and wanted something quick but different from everyday fast food to stop for supper. We stopped at Ray's. Even though they are known for burgers and I ordered fish. I guess I should have ordered a burger. The fish wasn't horrible but it could have been better. The fries were pretty good and you get a lot of them. The size of the sodas were kind of off. A large would be a small or medium at most other restaurants. The older guy behind the counter (Maybe the owner?) kept staring at us and giving us strange looks like we weren't supposed to be there. If made us really uncomfortable. I know it's a favorite with the locals, and I wouldn't mind trying a burger and shake sometime, but we didn't feel very welcome so I'm not sure that I will be back. read more
