My family has been going to Ray's since before I was born. Their shakes and fries are still the best around, but that is about all that is good about this place. I find it laughable that other reviewers have described Ray's "fast and friendly service"! 90% of my experiences involve seriously poor customer service and they often act as though the customer is an inconvenience.I have seen multiple instances when employees are talking to each other or to their friends while customers stand and wait. Today I walked out after waiting ten minutes before even one of the customers in front of me was able to place their order while two employees walked around seemingly aimlessly wandered around. As I said, the shakes and fries are great and I would highly recommend the olive burger if you do visit them. They have a very particular style of thin diner burger that can be great, but most of the time they are cold. It is sad, but this is a perfect example of a place that survives on nostalgia rather than quality and performance. I go out of my way to support local businesses, but it is getting harder to justify spending money here when any chain restaurant can offer better customer service and food quality. read more

Just came from Rays and I hate to say I was very disappointed . The service was painfully slow. The burger was so small I actually thought they forgot to put it in the bun. It was also very dry. The reason I gave 2 stars was because the fries were decent. I will not be returning anytime soon. read more

This place is a must when you're in town just because it's classic, drive in style food and it's cheap. The burgers are so-so, I've had just as good at Wendy's. But the fries are probably the best I've ever had. They're amazing. And the milkshakes are soooo good, really thick and creamy. Would go here just for a shake or fry. read more

No bad, but certainly not great. The beef was good, however the bun and condiments were very unimpressive. The fries weren't the golden crispy notes of goodness you expect. A girl in my group got a very stale bun. Would have brought it back but when you pick it up to go to eat somewhere else the hassle isn't worth it. Went there over 4th of July family vacation. The oldest person there, "the manager" was very rude to us when she screwed up the order. We heard they had good milkshakes but we left with a bad taste in our mouth. There are sooo many nice places in Grand Haven, don't waste your time on this dive !! read more

The WORST customer service I have ever witnessed in my whole life. An elderly woman came in 3 times to get her burger right, and the lady behind the counter threw a fit. She was incredibly snappy and rude to the woman. Then I stepped up in line and her poor attitude and unwillingness to help transferred onto me and my girlfriend. POOR customer service. Prices got a lot higher and quality has gone down hill and a $1.90 for your French fries that come in one size very small is a complete rip off not the same Ray's of the 80's when you got a great deal for the money and the food was great total letdown read more

Ray's is a Grand Haven original. I remember going there as a child. Their shakes are excellent. I hate to say it but the food quality has slipped over the last few years. When I was a kid Ray's had the best french fries in town--now the fries are soggy. The burgers are dry and the drink portions are not very generous by today's standard. I still go to Ray's, but it is more for the memory than the food itself. read more

After reading the positive reviews on Yelp, my family and I decided to give Ray's a shot. Prior to receiving our food, we were somewhat excited, as the reviews were quite high. We were expecting juicy and thick burgers, but what we discovered in the sacks that they gave us, were quite the contrary. It was nostalgic alright; it brought back memories of middle school cafeteria food. The burgers themselves were pale, thin, and tasteless. The fries were somewhat decent, but had obviously originated in a factory miles away. Honestly, I would never go back, and I do not understand why it was rated the number 1 burger joint in Grand Haven. I would instead suggest going down the street to Burger King. read more

Yes Ray's looks like a place that triple D would visit. It has the look and feel of pure Americana. However, Guy Fieri would be disappointed with the bla burgers and the fries bought from the local restaurant supply chain. What you will get from Ray's is a cheap burger that is not from a chain. Ray's is an All-American drive in that has what America does best-- burgers. Along with the awrad-winning shakes and fries are their devourable sandwiches. My personal favorite is the classic burger layered with onions, pickles, cheese, mayonase, ketchup, mustard, crammed between to crispy buns all around one delious patty. It isn't amazing in regards to the food. The only thing that makes it really stand out (in my mind) are the shakes - you can create your own flavor and that is just so great. I'm not normally a shake fan but my chocolate coconut shake was delicious! The burger and fries were average. It was inexpensive and really fast. I have been eating at Ray's since 1962, when we moved to Grand Haven and my father started playing golf with Ray. The only fast food in town, and good food. Over the years when it changed hands, things started to change. Especially noticeable the buns and fries. The other thing I've noticed is the service. No one smiles or greets you with a hello, what can I get you. It's " What do you want ". Tonight when we went with my daughter and her two daughters, we all gave our orders. My husband and I got our chicken strip dinners fast, before my daughters order came four other customers got theirs, some were chicken strips also. I asked where our other order was, and was told we just put the chicken down. Now if it was an oversight, and there was an apology I could have taken it a little better. A SMILE, A THANK YOU, and maybe they would get some or better tips. This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. It's sad. I miss the old Ray's. BS read more
