Rays is the place to be. The bar tenders are always friendly and on top if it. As for the food, the hot hams are excellent, i recommend ordering cheese on the top and bottom to make sure you hold all the meat in. Im not sure why these city yuppies are complaining about having their sandwiches served on a wax paper with "no plates". Thats like complaining about people speeding at the indie 500. I went here because of the reviews. This place is nothing fancy by any means. It's a rustic looking bar / restaurant but has that family feel. I had the roast beef and the ham sandwich. Both had a pile of meat, slice of cheese and a regular hamburger bun and were delicious. I think I like the roast beef better. Go light on the horseradish mustard. There are no plates here so be prepared to eat off of waxed paper. Overall, a good experience. I would go back for the sandwich and cold beer. read more

This place is a personal life changer, a big leap in a man's life, the moment when you discover something so great you immediately start to feel bad on what you've been missing out on all of these years. BEST BLOODY MARY'S EVER!! I used to hate, I mean seriously can't even smell bloody mary's but everyone, I mean the majority of the locals in the bar at 11pm were drinking bloodies. I had to try it. Let me tell you, I went from zero to hero, tired to excited, and suddenly Eau Claire was a great place to be! Their bloodies are very spicy, without an overwhelming taste of tomato juice in each sip and the pickles and olives made me a very, very happy man. Can you please use a paper plate?? The food wasn't good and I felt as if I was just served slop on a bun. They even served me the "sandwich" on a piece of wax paper! Great little bar and easy to miss but don't. Their food menu only has a few items. They have the best hot roast beef and ham sandwiches and they serve it on a bunch of napkins. We couldn't resist stopping by Ray's Place for the sandwiches, and they did not disappoint. The decadent ham and cheese sandwich was melt in your mouth amazing. Followed another reviewers tip of adding the falling pieces of ham to the bean soup, which was savory and comforting. Husband had the beef sandwich with cheddar and had similar rave reviews. Beer on tap was served in frosted glasses. Decor was clean, laid back, and perfect. Staff was friendly and polite. Can't wait to come back next time we are in Eau Claire!! read more

It is definitely the mustard that keeps me coming back. I like that they sell you a jar of it too as it is worth keeping at home for roast beefs. Good prices and the sandwiches come out on a paper napkin keeping the water conservation high so we have more water to make beer. A weekly standard for my wife and I. Sometimes for lunch but mostly for Wednesday night Trivia. Rays is everything a Wisconsin townie bar should be. Rich history, cold beer, simple yet signature food choices. If Spanish stew is on the menu, then try it with a hot beef. Or, a hot ham with Bean soup. Add a dollop of their mustard (sparingly at first) to both, then eat the sandwich over the soup so the overflowing proteins become an additional ingredient in your bowl. Five Stars Fo-Sho!!! Holy RAY's! There are two sandwiches on menu - yup 2! Ham or beef, with cheese, with onion? Have both! They seriously come out on a tiny piece of paper and a napkin! How smart!!! The ham was exceptional and so was the beef! Had Spanish stew that was delish! And Pea Soup was delish as well! Horseradish mustard was ridiculous! Beers great! And a beautifully simply Bloody Mary! Based on the reviews, we were expecting a great meal at Rays. I am from Wisconsin and have been in many dive bars so the atmosphere was exactly what I expected to find. The food was ok, certainly not 5 star by any standards. The roast beef tasted like it was from a can. My husbands pea soup was really watered down. The Spanish stew was good and had a nice kick but isn't worth a return visit from us. The service was friendly and quick. Was excited to try their hot beef sandwich.. This experience kinda ruined it for me though. A friend and I went to order a sandwich, and we literally waited 20+ minutes. While other people who came in after us got served food right away. The server came out with four sandwiches and we only ordered one each?? They were both pretty cold with a thick slice of onion and they weren't even served on a plate! they came out on a tiny napkin and right when you pick the sandwich up everything falls out. They don't even have any plates there which is super weird, but fortunately they did have a fork we could use. But since the sandwich was so sloppy, the paper napkin started deteriorating in the sandwich. So I couldn't even finish the sandwich, and we had to pay double for nothing.
