He showed me every major valve in the house, gas lines, where I could pulls things through (lighting, wiring, gas lines, etc). He also gave me plenty of ideas for my time-frozen 1970's new house. He even let me climb ladders with him to see attic space and wiring. Mark was thorough, his report was clear, and he verbally outlined what needed to be handled immediately, what could wait, and in what order things should be done to prevent contractors from having to backtrack over previously completely work. Our search for an honest company led us to West Coast, and we hoped the reviews were true. The good news is, West Coast is as honest as it gets. Askia came out and looked around the attic while I watched from the ladder. First, he showed me that the supposed mildew was some sort of harmless sandy clay-ish material. And the supposed black mold was just "lumber mold", an industry term for "stain fungi"--the common dark streaks in lumber that originate at the sawmill or in the forest, don't weaken the lumber, and are not indications of moisture. Who knew? Well, Askia knew. And he actually spent time convincing me that we didn't need their services. So do I recommend them to you? You betcha! An honest company is a joy to find.

I was satisfied with the remediation work and the additional follow through. The restoration portion of the work was led by another person and that scope of work and estimate wasn't as smooth. It was the same company but different people running the job like it was a separate company. I ended up hiring another contractor that I had worked with me before.

I recently used Joe's services twice for two different homes I was considering for purchase. Joe and his assistant were thorough, professional, detail-oriented, friendly and communicative. Joe has considerable knowledge of Southern California's different home types and home conditions, especially in San Diego's market of extensive unpermited additions and remodels. Be sure to interact with Joe before, during, and after the inspection. He is more than willing to focus on any concerns you may have about the house in advance, explain things he's found, and to answer questions you may have. Of course, you also get a detailed and extensive report, including photos and measurements they have taken, recommendations on fixing issues, lists of recommended contractors/ services providers, etc. But do take advantage of his personal knowledge by being present for the inspection, and interacting with him. Both times, he was *early* for the appointment times, and spent a good several hours inspecting the homes. He even walked the roofs and inspected the crawlspaces, which some home inspectors are too timid to do. His pricing was reasonable and in line with other qualified and thorough home inspection services in the San Diego market. read more

Joe DeMars of HouseMaster San Diego Home Inspections has been my go to guy for home inspections. I've been recommending him to all my clients since 2004. He is certainly not the least expensive home inspector in San Diego, however out of all the home inspections I've been involved in... you don't want the cheapest home inspection when you're making the biggest purchase of life. Spend the money with someone you can trust to tell you the facts about the home or condo you are purchasing so you can make an intelligent decision BEFORE you sign the escrow documents. I have always been able to count on Joe to tell is like it is. He's right on time, always does what he says he's going to do and even gives inspection reports right on the spot (Love That.) What it comes down to... I trust Joe. I trust him to give my clients the necessary facts about the home they are considering. He comes highly recommended. Joe inspected our condo a little less than a year ago. He was professional, patient, thorough, has excellent communication skills, and seems genuinely concerned for his clients' well being. It was an excellent experience and I can't recommend him highly enough. Additionally- a few weeks ago we had a "scare" put into our heads by a neighbor, who passed along concerns about some safety issues with our home. We called Joe (on a weekend....and received a prompt phone call!) and delineated our concerns. He reviewed our file and actually remembered our place, which I was impressed with. Bottom line, he reassured us that based on his inspection he was confident that there was no danger and that we should be comfortable that the home was safe. Joe Demars of Housemaster is the way to go for home inspections. I am a real estate investor, and I need to use the best for home inspections. I have tried other inspectors, but I go back to Joe for 2 main reasons. 1.) The quality of inspection 2.) Reliability. When I get a home inspection done, I need to find out as much as possible that is wrong with the house. If I am going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a house, I need to know what I am getting into. Hiring inspectors that are new, or are not thourough, is a risk I cannot afford to take. Also, deadlines/contingencies come quickly in real estate transactions. Things ALWAYS come up, especially when dealing with 2 realtors. The last thing I need is for my home inspector to flake or not show up. Joe has done over 15 inspections for me, and has yet to stand me up. I will keep using him. read more

We hired Joe DeMars for a Bay Park home inspection on September 18, 2010 after a glowing recommendation from our realtor. Joe was on the premises and already inspecting the electrical breaker box when I arrived for our scheduled meeting time of 8:00 am. For the next several hours, Joe diligently, meticulously, and quite competently went through the entire home from the foundation to the rooftop, all while being fired question after question from my realtor, my wife and myself about what he saw, and what he didn't see. I really appreciated Joe's demeanor and willingness to talk through, in detail, what he was seeing and potential remedies to problem areas of this 37 year old home. I've used Joe with House Masters since the mid 1900's and I fine that he's a very professional inspector. He points out to our buyers the weak areas of the home. He makes suggestions on how a problem should be fixed and what type of a licensed contractor should be used. He also talks about items that could be improved in the near future. He missed several MAJOR items on the home inspection (shows he did a half assed job, at best) -Claimed there is no exhaust tor dryer (there is, all he had to do was run the dryer and it would have been obvious) -Claimed that the upstairs loft areas were 100% (he never mentioned major holes in ventilation ducts in the lofts, or debris, or major repairs to walls in thr loft areas (again, had he checked them, would have been VERY obvious) -didn't notice a bit of thr foundation exterior to a sliding glass door was deteriorating (again, very obvious) Just a couple major items he never mentioned- straight up didn't look. and then DEMANDS cash on sight for inspection. They charged more than they quoted which I didn't complain about because it was stained pretty bad. When my husband went to check and see how they did he noticed that two of the closet doors were messed up and would not close anymore. He has to repair them now. All of the baseboards are beat up from the machine hitting the wall so hard. I have tried calling the number twice a week and have left messages each time since then and no return call.
