Came here for restaurant week (my favorite week of the year in AA), and definitely wasn't disappointed! The seafood is fresh and well cooked, and I loved the asian twist/flavors of our food. The broth that the mussels came in was delicious as well. Service was great as well. I would be happy come back without the restaurant week deal if I wasn't on a college budget. I've tried quite a few of the Main Street restaurants, and this is top on my list as one of my favorites. read more

Bummed by the menu changes at Real Seafood. What I've always loved is the ability to pick my protein, veggie and starch. I ordered salmon and asked if I could have it blackened with spinach on the side instead of couscous. It came blackened, but still with the lemon/butter sauce and couscous and they charged extra for the spinach. I'll give them time to adjust to the new menu, but if they don't go back to a flexible menu I might not go back either. Fingers crossed. read more

I was not expecting much really. Given the inconsistent ratings of this place I really was hesitant to come here for my birthday to be frank. They lured me in though with lobster dinners for under 20 dollars and a percentage off the entire check. As I came with three others it was 25% off the total check, it could have been as much as 50% if I had just come with James. I came with my money is no object parents though and as they paid my meal was free anywho. My father was still pleased with the discount and puzzled yet oddly proud I actually care about these things even when I'm not paying. What can I say, I am a genetic anomoly. We came early to avoid the crowds and because my husband's sleep schedule from work kind of requires it even on his off days. We were glad we had to do this though as they do start to get pretty crowded towards prime dining hours even during the week apparently. Our waiter, Ryan was a delight. Great recommendations, perfect pacing, helpful with questions and on top of drink and bread refills. He really added to what was a truly lovely experience. I also think he deconstructs a lobster like a champ, yes I can do my own but when Ryan did it the Lobster looked photo shoot worthy. We started with some calamari. I actually wanted mussels but my husband is not a fan. Calamari is loved by all of us. I thought it was tender, perfectly lightly coated and good, the sauce was merely ok though. They need to zip it up a bit in my opinion. It is a shame to pair top notch calamari with blandness, it made the dish a bit forgettable. Luckily though we also received a bread basket full of piping hot deliciousness which made us happier. My father and I indeed ordered the lobstahs. They were huge, fresh and perfectly steamed. We both asked for redskins to go with, deliciously soft and a huge portion. I kept the coleslaw starter and it was ice cold, creamy and had good snap to it. My father cannot do any green so they brought him some stewed tomatoes instead which were so tasty with the onion. James went with the Jambalaya. Studded with delicious spicy chorizo, crawfish and swordfish chunks, it was zippy and tomato-y. I loved the sauce and the veggies added a lot to it. He is anti coleslaw so he upgraded to a house salad with gruyere and tomato. I loved that they tossed it before bringing it out but did not overdress it. It was worth the upgrade fee. My mother had the best dish of the night. The paella here does not skimp on the saffron. The baby peas, asparagus tips, peppers and onion all make the rice incredibly flavorful too. The shrimp was just a tad overdone but the clams, mussels and lobster were happiness. Added chorizo and chicken were great too. Luckily she is a sharer because we all fell in love. Added bonus to the already cheap as chips elegance was that I received a free dessert. The tray was full of temptation but I knew I would kick myself if I did not get creme brulee. It was a solid win. My husband's chocolate mousse was also fantastic with its brandy punch and dense richness. Happy birthday indeed. read more

We are longtime Ann Arbor residents and Real Seafood has always been one of our favorites. We went on a Monday and overall we were a little disappointed. It took a full 15 minutes to get our drinks. Our waiter said that the delay was due to their happy hour being packed. Shouldn't priority be given to dining room customers who pay full price for their food? They were obviously understaffed. The food was adequate but my shrimp scampi was lukewarm at best. I expected more for the $150 we paid for a party of three. read more

But they really do have fresh seafood (from Foleys) which I missed very much, so I gave it another shot, and I am very glad that I did. My last visit was on my anniversary on a Saturday night. We were seated at a very intimate corner table in the front of the restaurant. Service: Our server's was Ben C. I highly recommend that you ask for him when you go- he was very nice, personable, and honest with his recommendations. When I was torn on which bottle of wine to order, he brought out tasters so that I can make an informed decision. He recommended great dishes, was able to tell me how each dish is prepared. He was there when you needed him, but wasn't lingering around to make you feel uncomfortable. The best servie I had in a very long time. Drinks: It's amazing how difficult it is to get the perfect dirty martini with just enough "dirty" when I go out. Real Seafood makes the perfect dirty martini... with blue cheese-stuffed olives. My boyfriend ordered a makers mark manhattan, which he is picky about but enjoyed very much. We had a bottle of pinot noir from oregon. It complimented our meal perfectly. Food: We started out with some cockenoe oysters and calamari. Both were excellent- oysters were very flavorful and fresh. Calamari was lightly dusted and just fried enough to be crispy but not overwhelmingly greasy. Lobster bisque followed the appetizer- it was a big salty but very flavorful with lumps of lobster meat. Main dishes we ordered were the blue plate special which consisted of baked oysters, crabmeat-stuffed flounder, crab cake, grilled shrimp and scallops on a skewer with a side dish. All were cooked perfectly and was good re-heated hours later. I ordered the paella- and this is the only reason why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. The flavor of the dish was on-point. My only complaint is that the dish was a bit overcooked- half of the lobster, mussels, and shrimp were a little tough and the chorizo was tough to chew as well. Dessert: coffee with kaluah- delicious and just sweet enough to compliment our dessert. Creme brulee was light with just a thin layer of crispness to break with your spoon. Misc: There is street parking as well as a paid parking structure behind the restaurant. Weekend nights are very busy, so I recommend making a reservation. They utilize opentable.com. I also have their cookbook and have made their scallops at home. it's too die for! Their cookbook is definitely worth $35. read more

Real Seafood has a birthday deal. I like to take my mom there on her birthday. The surroundings are fancy enough to make it a special occasion. The food is good, too. And "normal" enough, even for Mom! The menu arrives on a tablet, which I had to show my mom how to use. At least they make it relatively easy to order gluten free in this restaurant. I liked my gluten free whitefish very much, and I had decided to order a glass of wine, even though it was only lunchtime. I asked for "something with a passion fruit taste" because those are my favorite. I'm not very knowledgeable at picking out wine, but I know the flavors that I like! When I find one I like, I'm sure to remember it. The Whitehaven Savignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand really fit the bill! Lots of citrus notes, and even a bit of passion fruit in the finish. Score! Our waiters were very accommodating, even when my sister-in-law and her friend stopped by our table unexpectedly, just to visit for a couple of minutes. The waiters tried to convince them to stay a while, but they had other plans, and just wanted to say hi to my mom for a little while on her big day. Hugs and kisses all around, and then they were on their way. My mom's dessert was complimentary. I abstained, because I didn't see any GF desserts on the menu. For me, a piece of nicely ripe fresh fruit or a low-sugar fruit compote would be sufficient. Mom was starting to get antsy. She wanted to get back to her office, so she asked that they bring her dessert in a to-go box. They brought it out with a candle, and had her blow it out. Ok the food here is really good, but I'm just not sure it's worth the price that you pay for it. The portions are the good size you definitely won't be hungry after you finish. One thing I thought was very good however was the bread. It's nice and toasty on the outside and very soft on the inside. I have eaten at Real Seafood Company three times, and have never been impressed with the quality of the food. On my last trip, I tried broiled fish that was especially bland. The bread was delicious, but it was all downhill from there, at least as far as the food was concerned. Servers, on the other hand, are always above average and are so helpful that they will steer you away from dishes that they think might disappoint you. The decor is the most attractive thing about the restaurant. It's great when they roll up the glass doors at the front of the restaurant in the summer, and you can get a table with a breeze and a view. The shame of it is that looking in from the outside you expect a really special dining experience, and the food is a let-down. The decor and service might make for a meal that you remember, but the broiled fish wasn't worth $37 per person. read more

Things are going downhill at the MSV restaurants IMO. Not only have they eliminated the birthday deal, the happy hours are also unimpressive. Prices are up, which I would expect with inflation. Drinks about 25% increase and happy hour food offerings from 20%-150%!up. The bigger problem though is the food Quality. Fish tacos, always a favorite are skimpy and flavorless. Imagine a raw flour tortilla filled with coleslaw and corn then topped with 3 tiny units (size of a quarter) of scrap fish coated with a zigzag formation of green mayonnaise. Is this supposed to bring to mind cilantro or avacado? Nope. Just greasy. And the happy hour oyster selection which use to run at $1 each, are now $2.50 each and not even presented on ice. We were so disappointed that we decided not to purchase our annual gift cards from MSV. read more

A bit pricey, but I have fond memories of eating dinner with my dad here a little over five years ago. He's a very, very picky eater (and will mostly only eat seafood), and he enjoyed the salmon. Super dissapointing experience. Being that I am gluten and dairy free i am always weary about eating out but nice restaurants i usually feel quite safe. Everything was going well until the main dish. Although service was slow we had great drinks and appetizers that i thoroughly enjoyed. I had the mediterranean salmon and the server assured me she would check with the chef everything was gluten and dairy free and i switched out the fregola with rice. My salmon then came dry with zero vegetables not even oil or any seasoning. Just dry salmon white rice and a lemon wedge. Super frustrating for all people who know the struggle of allergies. Mostly frustrating because they say on their menu they can accommodate allergies and my server made it sound like no big deal. Overall I could have made what I ordered at home MUCH BETTER. Sautéed in garlic and olive oil. The food was awesome and my service was great. I wish the bar area was a little bit bigger though. Nice atmosphere on a slow Sunday, early afternoon. We ordered jambalaya with the rice pilaf on the side, and the stuffed salmon with steamed green beans. Service was nicely timed, Ryan was the perfect amount of attentive. The food was delicious! They make some of the best jambalaya I've ever had! I have had my share, and not found many places that make it as good as mine; this place is the first! We ordered the rice on the side, and the fact that they don't mix the rice into the stew and cook it all into a gelatinous mass is obviously, the best! Rice should compliment a good jambalaya, and this was that! Wonderful flavors and we added just enough rice to make a hearty meal to our liking. The stuffed salmon was also perfectly prepared. As I cut into it, I thought maybe they could have gone a little heavier on the stuffing...but I was wrong! It was just the right amount and blended exactly as it should. It didn't have very much rice at all and had great flavor, but the seafood and chicken were a little dry. Ate here last night and overall I think the whole experience was just ok. The complimentary bread rolls they give you are quite delicious. Definitely worth asking for more of! My food was a bit underwhelming, it was tasty but nothing special. I ordered the cioppino (fish stew) which was nice but the broth was a tad over salted. The mussels were also overcooked, and rather disappointingly the king crab was not included in the stew as advertised on the menu (and as seen in pictures of the cioppino by other yelpers). We also ordered the Georgia cod, Shanghai style. The fish was cooked nicely but was not seasoned well, which wasn't helped by the fact that the sauce was a bit bland too. I would recommend this place to others if they were really hell bent on eating seafood just because of the variety and because I've eaten here before and had a much better experience in regards to the food. I have enjoyed every visit I have ever had at this place, and I feel bad for those who did not. My then girlfriend (now wife) and I used to go here for our anniversaries and other special occasions. We always enjoyed the fine selection of fish and other seafood. One day we happened to be there on a day they had all you can eat mussels. Sweet lord, I never knew I (or my wife) could eat that much. Came here for dinner with my family and everything was fine. There wasn't anything particularly standout about Real Seafood Company, aside from maybe the complimentary bread rolls from Zingerman's, but I can see why people come here: lots of seating, ample seafood options, plenty of food for people who might be a little less adventurous with their eating, and very family-friendly. It kind of reminded me of a classier, less overly-indulgent version of Red Lobster (not to badmouth Red Lobster, one of my favorite chains of all time that is admittedly very casual and I always over-indulge). The portions are pretty big so come hungry. The clam chowder is okay, nothing standout though, and potentially disappointing if you are from New England are used to really good clam chowder, but I would keep drinking it. The highlight of the meal was definitely the Jambalaya, which featured lots of seafood, great flavors, and an abundant amount leftover for me to doggy bag, score! Also, the menu is on iPads, which was pretty cool, and featured pictures, which is always helpful. While Real Seafood Company wasn't my favorite restaurant, particularly in a town like Ann Arbor where there is tons of quality dining for cheaper prices, it does have its benefits. read more

Miso glazed Chilean Sea Bass was to die for. It had a nice wasabi glaze in a chutney type sauce. The sautéed fresh spinach had a hint of garlic and olive oil. The jasmine rice were a nice complement. I recommend getting the house salad instead of the coleslaw. read more

The lighting and decor aren't that classy, they are going more Bubba Gump here with plenty of ships, fish, and sea faring flare. Help was plentiful and with clean garb. I hadn't even made it to the entree yet, but the complimentary bread and the small side of coleslaw they give you while you wait had me salivating in anticipation of how good the food would be. The bread was piping hot, soft and savory. The coleslaw had a good bit of mayonnaise in it but it wasn't overwhelming as I thought it'd be - it actually had great flavor. I ordered the Jambalaya after the waiter's recommendation. He said it would "change my life." I laughed sarcastically at the remark. But when it came, all that sarcasm went out the window. It was pretty freakin amazing. Life changing? No. But a very elegant, taste-filled interpretation of a down home favorite. All of the ingredients were fresh and had a good, but not over-powering amount of spice. After all of the bread and coleslaw I ate, I got full half way through my dish... but since I was only visiting and couldn't take it to go I couldn't bring myself to stop. I'm just going to assume that our waiter was new and still getting the hang of things. It took about 30 minutes before we got our bread. We had to ask for it while ordering our food. But he was a sweet boy and we were all in a great mood so it didn't bother us too much that we didn't have bread to eat right away. He also had no idea about what wine to recommend so he took a few minutes to track someone else down and ask them what to recommend. You would assume as a server you would know what wines to recommend right? But not if they're new.... So we're giving him a break (: He was still a great server. The bread was so soft and warm. I'm not sure what kind of bread it was but it was amazing with or without butter. I was starving so, this piece of bread was heaven sent for me d: We started with oysters, clams, and crab cake. Both were phenomenal. Crab cake was moist and packed with just the right amount of flavor. Oysters were delicious. I opted to eat them without the tomato sauce it came with. I put salt, pepper, lemon, cocktail sauce, and a little bit of horseradish. Soooooo tasty. I didn't eat the clams but according to my dining party they were cooked to perfection and the sauce was on point. It was a garlic butter sauce and the clam juice added the right amount of saltiness to the whole thing. It comes out in a pot so at first they are very hot, be careful! We orders the salmon, scallops, paella, and lobster bolognese. My friend thoroughly enjoyed his perfectly cooked salmon. He said it was nice and light tasting. He's a bit of a healthy eater so this was perfect for him. My friend who ordered the scallops had ordered this before and claims that you just can't go wrong with their scallops. The paella was what the birthday boy ordered. It came In a huge dish. I had a taste of it and it was very salty.... Too salty. I've had paella before and so has the birthday boy (who has had them in Spain) we've never had paella that was so unnecessarily salty. Lastly I ordered the lobster bolognese. I had such high expectations for this dish. The Italian bacon did not taste like bacon at all. It really threw off the tomato sauce so I decided to not eat any more of the Italian bacon. The lobster had a crumbly texture and it was way over cooked with no flavor. The sauce was decent. I only ate about 1/3 of my dish. I didn't touch any more lobster or Italian bacon. I would not recommend this dish... It's is unreasonably over priced for something that's cooked so poorly and lacking in taste cohesion. We ended our dinner with creme brûlée. This was delicious... But can you really mess up a creme brûlée? All in all I would only come here on a birthday occasion for the 25% off. I do not think that it is worth the price. I left out one thing from my previous review that was both innovative and a surprise - the menus are on Android tablets. When ordering you can see a picture of the item and options (such as if you wanted a steak there is a handy tool alongside your choice explaining what your degree of wellness would look like: rare, medium rare, done, etc.). I've not seen this in any restaurant previously and now my thinking is why not? Tablets are becoming cheaper by the day (especially Androids), saves paper and changing menu items (or descriptions, prices, etc) is as easy as sending out an update to all the tablets. Just another reason why I will eat here again next time I'm in Ann Arbor! read more

Food was not good. One of the people in my party ordered medium rare steak and it came not medium rare. It was completely cooked. The fettuccini alfredo that I ordered was disgusting. The scallops tasted like rubber. The bloody mary tasted like pure tomato juice. My waitress was very rude. The $22 Shrimp was very cold. For $200 for a meal, this was disgusting. I have been here a couple of times for birthday and graduation dinners. It's not the most creative seafood place but it's fine. This is boring but necessary seafood. Everything is pretty much baked or boiled and add salt but that's just what some people like to eat. Overall, the dishes taste predictable. There is nothing wrong with it but there is also nothing amazing about it. Pan Seared Diver Scallops with sweet potato puree and apple cider reduction This appetizer is the one exception to everything I just said. I actually think this is the best thing ever at Real Seafood. The sweet potato and apple cider (I am a fan of both) go so well with the scallops. The scallops come in a trio but someone jumped the gun before I got to take a photo. Creamy New England Clam Chowder Chowda is a stable at seafood restaurants. This is standard but delicious nonetheless. Maryland Style Lump Crab Cake with mustard sauce and greens tossed with fruit and nuts The crab pieces were big and chunky. The salad was a nice addition and balanced the crab cake well. Yes, an impatient bite was taken out of this too before I managed to get a photo. Half Clams/Half Mussels in white wine and garlic butter The sauce wasn't anything spectacular and I would not recommend getting this over the other appetizers. Lobsterfest Special (Seasonal) They usually run this $20 lobster special in the fall and it is pretty legit; it comes wiht a 1 1/4 lb lobster and a small side. The server brings the lobster out whole first and de-shells it next to the table. If I come back, it will only be to get this special and the scallops. Blue Plate Special with crab cake, baked oysters, baked stuffed flounder, grilled shrimp and scallop skewer If you can't decide or want variety (and are okay with not having lobster), this is a good entree to get. This is a great mix of samplings from the appetizer and entree sections. I especially like the the oysters, which are the Oysters Florentine with spinach, bacon, and parmesan from the appetizer section. read more

Came here during restaurant week but didn't order off of the restaurant week menu because it was my birthday. They do a good birthday deal: 25% off the entire bill and since it was my twin sisters birthday we got 50% off which made the whole experience more bearable. The filet mignon was amazing, delicious. The alaskan crab legs were nothing special, I've had better many times. The cheesecake dessert was yummy and was served with a birthday candle which was a cute little touch. My biggest complaint was the HORRIBLE SERVICE. I won't name our waitress but this was Monday night and she was training a new girl. Her trainee did an OK job especially for her first night. The server who was training her, however, was RUDE. Rude and neglectful. We watched her pay much better attention to her other two tables the entire night and, for whatever reason, we were obviously lowest priority. My assumption was maybe because we had discounts and she assumed we were going to tip on the half off price, which normally we would never do. We know how the service industry works. 3 out of 4 of us at the table are servers. However, we were appalled by the lack of service and the rude attitude we were getting. If I went back and was seated in her section again, I would probably ask for another server. We left a note letting her know how unpleased we were. I went to Real Seafood to take advantage of their birthday deal (50%!) with the little lady. I was excited to try it because I'm a huge seafood fan. I ordered a seafood medley of sorts - grilled halibut, scallops, shrimp and such. I don't remember what she got. The verdict: It all tasted like it had been frozen and thawed several times, like one month from fresh. Not only did it taste bad; it tasted wrong, if that makes sense. I've had bad seafood before but nothing like this. The same company that owns Real Seafood also owns Gratzi, and I have to say that the experience is similar. I suppose this could be forgivable if the prices were more reasonable, but the prices were high even with the birthday deal. I can't imagine why any right-minded person would voluntarily eat here on any regular day. The service was great and the ambiance was lovely. Very date-like. It would be a good place to impress a lady if the food didn't leave her unimpressed. read more

I enjoyed my lunch here very much. They have excellent service, and excellent food. There's also a number of gluten free options, and they understand not to cross contaminate, which means I can eat here safely. I love seafood and had the shrimp, which was delicious. Parking is the only challenge, but we were fortunate to find street parking only a few feet from the door. There's also a parking structure around the corner. read more

I went here for Restaurant week with a friend and it was my birthday;1/2 off the $28 per person price. Meal came with appetizers, main courses and deserts. Everything was absolutely delicious. We also got oysters when we started the meal. While it wasn't the main menu, the food was made fresh; being from the east coast I'm picky about sea food, and Real Seafood company is one of the best places I recommend to get something delicious. The ambiance is very nice. The waiter was super. The food was ...meh. In particular, I ordered the Simply Seafood which included a lobster tail. The meat was cut up and put back into a grilled tail. There was perhaps 1/3 of the lobster of the original tail. What happened to the other 2/3's? read more
